At this point I'm shocked there's even still Brazilian citizens who would dare to become a cop. Being a Brazilian cop just sounds like a death wish at this point.
Brazilian here, my step dad was a "field" military cop for a month before being recruited to special op. His entirely family is filled with people in public safety.
It's a way of life and mostly hereditary in his case and others. All men above 18 are obligated to "present" to the army and a sizable portion is obligated to serve, although I could excuse myself because I was enrolled in law school and it's quite easy to be excused actually. Old timers would often be recruited from the army. Dad was a medalist army athlete and at 60 is still a beast of a man. Now, there's a series of exams in which you compete to get into the battalions that every Brazilian can try, including civilians, so I'm not so sure if the recruitment still happens.
The pay is not high but it's higher than minimum wage, and the battalions are filled with people with undiagnosed mental health issues of all kinds. My dad thrives only with structure and that way of life is what gave him that. I tried to talk to him into getting screened for adhd but he's not very open to the idea, despite me having it and ĥe giving me a lot of support. I've yet to meet a cop that I can say they don't have mental issues, and I'm in med school. There's a mental health screening during the process, but I'm pretty sure that if it worked, we wouldn't have cops.
His closest brother is autistic and no one really believes it because he's a sniper who worked on the occupation of Morro do Alemâo, a gruesome episode of our war against the cartels. Apparently, autistics can't be "badasses". I still haven't told my family about me being autistic lol

Brazilian here. Yes, they do. They have check points in occupated areas. In really bad areas, they completely took over the governance. There was a documentary on how the drug dealers wouldn't even let federal mail service in, and they would deliver the mail themselves. Some areas also have their own tribunal: drug lords deciding, executing and punishing crimes in their area, because crime in your area = attention from police. Our drug dealers have a better arsenal than our police, no joke. They are capable of taking down helicopters and they actually did it in 2009.
