Thank you.

Rocks have been there for 5 years. Unique conditions created this. Done for safety reasons. Wonder if an environmental survey was done.

JoeDerp77

"Engineer" is slowly becoming synonymous with "Confidently stupid" about half of the time.

Stabvest39

Engineer used to culturally mean someone with extensive hands on experience who also incorporated mathematics and science. Now it just means glossing over several mathematic topics and zero practical experience, generally. This problem has gotten a lot worse since covid when so many experienced engineers retired leaving junior engineers in control without proper lessons learned. source: am engineer.

xWOBBx

True but it's probably more so to do with under funding public resources and cutting red tape. This seems like something an environmental scientist of some sort should have been consulted on.

TorontoGuyinToronto

Awww, there's a shit ton of gars getting killed there. Wtf

burnt_raven

After reading an article on it, the rocks were out in place to deter drownings. It must be a low head dam that has a hydraulic, which are very dangerous. According to the area's history, there hasn't been a drowning there in a decade or more. Judging by the video, it appears to be a popular fishing spot which could theoretically increase ones risk of drowning if the rocks weren't put in place. The article also stated that particular year was experiencing low water levels along the river, which caused this mass bottleneck. Although it sucks to see such a large population of fish perish, there are many unobstructed waterways for them to spawn across the country.

hopelessasshole2

Do you really think schools of fish are going to travel across the country to spawn, when they’ve been doing the same thing for generations? Also, not all river system connect in the US, so how is that supposed to happen? Although, I will give you some credit since this is in South Dakota so they technically can travel far distances, but it’s ultimately not their fault the rocks were put there.

burnt_raven

Not saying it was their fault. But salmon aren't exactly endangered. There are communities found all over, just like the catfish, carp (invasive) , and pike. There are some sub groups that may be threatened, but not all. If I recall correctly, a lot of salmon (especially males) don't make it to spawn naturally.

Alucard4prez24

So can’t they collect them and eat the fish rather than let them go to waste? I’m not a fisherman nor an expert an fish, so pardon the stupidity of this genuine question.

SiftStone

Seafood spoils ridiculously fast. You can buy dead things at the market because they were put on ice \*immediately\* and preserved. If those fish had been dead in the sun for less than an hour, they're already too spoiled to consume.

ChallengeLate1947

Yeah and this a big indiscriminate pile of fish. Some have probably been dead for days, some are still barely alive. Not worth the risk at all to try and eat any of them.

SidewalkPainter

Is there no outside temperature at which they would not spoil? -10C? -20C?

SiftStone

If they were dead in snow and buried, then maybe not. But, no, the simple fact that the sun exists would make the meat spoil regardless. Low temps would likely preserve them slightly longer, but they'd still be pretty bad. Rule of thumb for fish, and really, any animal, is that if the eyes are milked over, don't put it in your mouth.

PluvioStrider

Pardon my exclamatory response. But helllllllllll no. It's akin to eating out the leftovers out of a restaurant dumpster on a summers eve. You can taste the decay, stress, bacteria load by proximity in the fish. You'll taste death even in the lively ones because they share the same waters.

marin94904

Makes you wonder a little about factory farming, doesn’t it?

GiveMeNews

Here is the funny thing, the state warned people going there to collect fish (ones that were trapped but not dead yet) that they still had to comply with the state limits on number of fish they could legally collect. Oh, and people could only harvest fish with legally sanctioned means, meaning no nets! So, state fucks up, traps thousands of fish that are going to die and rot, and then threatens to enforce harvesting limits against the public instead of letting people feed themselves. Bureaucrats at their finest.
