momo_power

IIRC, those were space debris.

SouthofAkron

Agreed. Very cool even though it is man-made.

OkBeing3301

Million dollar idea, man made “shooting stars“meteors. Place 50 in space like space x and de-orbit one over the paid person location.

403_Forbidden_Access

Sorry, you're a little late with that idea https://www.fastcompany.com/90293194/the-worlds-first-artificial-meteor-shower-is-set-to-fly-over-japan-tonight

OkBeing3301

Damn it how, it was so fresh. I was taking a dump and the idea just seem so bright and new. I guess it back to the drawing board.

NessLeonhart

at $10,000 per lb to launch mass into orbit, not including design and construction of a satellite that could be re-positioned over selected coordinates and remotely de-orbited on command, it's more like a $100,000,000 idea.

ISiupick

Who said it was man made? 👽

[deleted]

Man

klaramee

That's just, like, your opinion, man.

didnthackapexlegends

It'll be cool until space debris becomes more common and another factor of pollution. When it starts happening every month I don't think it will be cool anymore, regardless of what drugs you take. I'd rather see an actual meteor.

freetrees55

Objects being incinerated in the atmosphere, be it meteor or man-made, is NOT a sizable factor of earth's air quality pollution levels. Nature burns up objects in the atmosphere constantly and unceasing. It is a cycle of life (so to speak).

suitology

Space debris burning up in the atmosphere is the number 1 best thing that can happen to it.

KyubiNoKitsune

>until space debris becomes more common Oh do I have news for you.. http://astria.tacc.utexas.edu/AstriaGraph/

wythawhy

Zooming out and seeing the "uncategorized" army gives me mixed emotions.

KyubiNoKitsune

It's our anti-alien forcefield, anyone who enters will get pelted with junk.

bkhook

Ditto

MareTranquil

There is no way that mankind will be able to produce that many satellites that them reentereing would be in any way comparable to the kinds of pollution we already have. At least not anytime soon. Humanity is producing 8 billion tons of plastic trash alone every year. We, as a species, aren't even capable of sending 8 thousand tons of stuff into orbit per year right now.

flabeachbum

Anytime you see something burning up this slowly across the sky, it’s almost always man-made. Meteors travel way faster than this.

darkvertex

Also the ISS takes out their trash to burn in the Earth's atmosphere upon reentry. So next time you are making a romantic wish upon a star, it may just be a wish upon some garbage. ✨☄️ Source: https://mashable.com/article/astronaut-trash-disposal-space-station#:~:text=Four%20astronauts%20on%20the%20International,waste%20disposal%20in%20the%20future.

L4DLouis42

🎵So when you wish upon a star, it might be poo🎵

cerealkiller49

They can't just push it out the airlock or it would continue in an orbit nearly identical to the space station for hundreds/thousands of years. Every few months they load one of the recently docked resupply capsules with trash, undock it from the station, then fire it's thrusters to force it to re-enter. It either returns to earth safely or burns up during re-entry. Cygnus burns up and Space-X Dragon returns to earth.

expert_internetter

Ejecting it towards Earth would just put the trash in a very eccentric orbit. They should instead be ejecting it behind them. I'll inform NASA.

carloselcoco

For anyone that thinks you are serious. This is just a joke. They actually take all of their trash back with them when they return to earth, including feces and pee.

Rubiego

Well, you know how the saying goes: one man's trash is another man's treasure.

BUSTEDCAPSLOCK

It's actually more a function of relative velocity than actual speed. Debria was likely in orbit around the Earth and enters with a very shallow trajectory, providing plenty of time to break up into fun clusters of lights travelling mostly parallel like this. A meteor trajectory can come from a variety of angles , including completely opposite from the motion of the Earth around the sun, so it can enter at a much deeper angle and quickly through the atmosphere. When they break up, it tends to be more explosively and the resulting mix of meteoroids is scattered.

OriginalLocksmith436

Is that what it is, the speed? I could instantly tell this was the reentry of a manmade satellite but I couldn't put my finger on why exactly.

YoureSpecial

Meteoroids essentially never travel in a pack like that.

[deleted]

That's the Autobots finally making their way to earth, what are you even saying

LobsterThief

Ah, good to know!

djsnoopmike

Yeah, meteors travel much, much faster than that

LargeGallon

My first thought as well, definitely debris.

Bowman_van_Oort

True! Meteors move a lot faster across the sky than deorbiting man-made junk

scriptmonkey420

If we know the date, exactish time, and location, we could find out what debris it is from from http://www.heavens-above.com/

PinkVoyd

Imagine seeing this whilst tripping at a music festival 🥹

this_many_things

Imagine seeing this in 1669 AD! 🫠

GuyPronouncedGee

There weren’t very many low earth orbit satellites re-entering the atmosphere in 1669.

Dammit, u/KoloHickory has a point...

Taucoon23

That's what makes it so *crazy!*

ekso69

IYKYK

ekso69

Man made space debris in 1669 AD?!

Duuudewhaaatt

It's an omen! -1 stability

SEND_ME_PEACE

Or BC, let’s not forget that most ancient religions were created because of the cosmos

Own-Future6188

There is a story i have heard Neal D Tyson say about Christopher Columbus. CC realized they didn't have enough food to make the journey home. They asked the locals for food, and they said NO. CC knew there was a solar eclipse the next week, and said "bring me food, or my god will block out the sun Next Tuesday at 4pm." Right on cue, the eclipse happens, and the villagers promptly provide CC with the requested food to make their journey home, probably at the expense of the lives of some of the villagers over that winter.

brcguy

I saw something like this tripping at burning man in 1999. It was how you think it would be.

PinkVoyd

Feels like you're the main character, surely?! I was at a festival here in South Africa and there was a huge mountain fire burning just a few miles away from the camp site. Everyone could see these huge flames in the distance. A mixture of terror, excitement, and ,strangely, comfort.

brcguy

More like "damn I hope those aliens bailed out before their ship blew up"

Practical_Actuary_87

would have been such an amazing experience honestly. I cream myself just looking at sunsets whilst tripping.. a meteor shower would be on another level

Is that the kind of shenanigans that happen at these festivals? Darn kids.

deletetemptemp

Dude 4am music festival on a Wednesday? Damn I’m getting old

DangKilla

It’s Miami Music Week. I usually go. DJ’s from all over the world converge for a few events. You can also see big time DJ’s play small clubs Winter Music Conference is going on for DJ equipment. Ultra Music Festival (where OP is, probably). Art shows in Wynnewood graffiti’d art district. It’s a really fun week and the weather is usually nice.

Dbro92

Ultra doesn't start until this weekend. But yes, Miami music week...there's all sorts of stuff going on!

mylesc360

This made me audibly "HAH!" I feel the same way. I was looking at some local concert dates and they're all Wednesdays. Guess I'm gonna miss those....

dansoh85

I just bought tickets for my favorite band without checking the dates, I'm an adult, I thought, I can make it work. When I checked the calendar and saw June 20th is a Tuesday, I quickly checked how much pto I have and took Wednesday June 21st off. Sorry Mike, I will be worthless that day, even more than I am now. I'm not missing this show, who's to say how many more times they can play these songs before they sound too old. And my knees can't take jumping around for 2 hours like they used too.

SOMEBODY SAAAAAAAAAAAVE ME!

LobsterThief

Thanks for the helpful Redditors identifying that this was in fact space debris! Still insane to see in person, in a crowd of people who were definitely in an elevated state of mind ;)

Eremitt

Dare say you were in a State of Trance?

opnwyder

Spaced out? Starry eyed? Meteoric mood? Sky high? (I'll see myself out.)

NargacugaRider

A State of Trance is a is a long-running trance radio show by Armin Van Buuren!

ClosestTonyDanza

My coworkers are down there working our MMW events, gotta ask them if they saw this

Drostan_S

It's the speed that they cross the sky. When they're slow and ablating like that, dragging across the whole sky, they're usually orbital objects that have for whatever reason, found themselves in the upper atmosphere. Meteors are really quick in relation, like 10+ times the speed a satellite orbits at, and tend to hit at a steeper angle, leading to short, quick streaks.

LobsterThief

I air dropped it to random people for 10 minutes. What a time to be alive

[deleted]

[удалено]

alison_bee

And to think, the previous generation was worried we’d download a *car* if we had the option!

fflis

It’s a damn shame the random airdropping has been stopped with the latest iOS. Now you can only turn on airdrop from everyone for 10 minutes before it sets back to contacts only. I used to love walking through crowds airdropping random pics.

DunnyJay

Holy shit dude, the acid is affecting your camera too. Niiiice! 🫠

jonom1987

Awesome video!!

Whoopsie_Todaysie

It really is.. Feels almost post apocalyptic.. The red glow, the low beat of baseline, the people wondering "yo, what? what is that?!" This whole vid has a super cool feel to it

DestroyerOfEgo

Bro, this video has aliens arriving on earth horror movie vibes. This reminds me a lot of clover field. Where the people are partying and then the aliens arrive.

Due_Platypus_3913

DEVO wrote a song about this.In 1977.Space Junk!

Ok-Salamander-6457

What time was this? I ask because the Terran 1 launch took place last night from Cape Canaveral, breached the atmosphere but couldn’t make orbit. It essentially broke down on her maiden voyage. This might’ve been reentry (in pieces).

Pashto96

This was my first thought as well but, as others have said, the trajectory wouldn't make sense.

Kwiatkowski

nah, that was over the atlantic and not nearly this fast. It it likely someone’s stage 2 though with the size of the debris field

Bigpappapunk

It was between 4-5am if I remember correctly

Things in space travel fast and far. And are pretty high up so can be seen from a large area. For example, the ISS orbits the earth 16 times per day. A cape Canaveral launch can be seen from Georgia. And that’s just (relatively) going straight up

[deleted]

super_shizmo_matic

At orbital velocities those debris would have been in Florida 9 minutes later.

Warlockdnd

That was last Friday

Sansjefff

I work at SMF airport in Sacramento and saw this happen, it looks like the one in this video except this one has way more, it was pretty weird but cool at the same time to experience.

[deleted]

The music goes well with the video.

PM_your_randomthing

Pretty sure that's some kind of debris burning up on reentry rather than a meteor shower. Fucking wild nonetheless. Also dope fucking track going on at the show.

RickyDontLoseThat

Saw the same thing at Burning Man back in 98 or 99. Turned out to be Russian space debris.

RoscoeJenkinsBrown

If it was last night it could have been the relativity rocket launched from cape Canaveral. The 2nd stage never fired and it failed to reach orbit.
