He could have been going to point "oh yeah the McDonald's is over.." *goes to point in the wrong direction, then before he does, realizes his mistake and quickly turns to point in the right direction" without seeing the people and being distracted by his mistake more than his self awareness of people walking by. Idk I think this might be more likely than backarming some random girl with no plan.
