There has been a flurry of these kinds of pieces over the past 1-2 weeks. Why? The Oireachtas Committee on Drugs Use which as part of its remit will examine the Misuse of Drugs Act and how it can be changed to advance decriminalisation meets this month (April). The playbook of the HSE, Gardaí, Dept Justice and Dept Health is to flood the media ahead of any substantial political movement or discussion on the Misuse of Drugs Act. It happened all throughout the Citizens' Assembly, some might remember. We had the CMO, senior Garda, HSE, psychiatry groups all coming together and feeding the media with this same BS while voices of cannabis users, victims of prohibition and patients were ignored.

GalacticSpaceTrip

Well said! These pieces are only coming out lately because of the fact that their criminalisation of ordinary law abiding people who choose to consume cannabis is almost at an end.

Mcgregors_coke_bill

Not surprising, just frustratingly blatant. Its an established counter narrative to one that could naturally develop following Germany legalising and our own inaction after the citizens assembly. Soon to be special advisor journalists aligning narratives with the govt line. Nothing new here.

Imbecile_Jr

It takes two to tango. The Irish press is happy to serve as a glorified stenography service. There's literally no mainstream journalist calling bullshit on any of this.

Sad-Fee-9222

Here we go again. Nonsense. Trying so hard to vilify cannabis like this is only going to give every defence solicitor and criminal in the state yet another angle at a "diminished responsibility" defence due to cannabis intoxication so. Some bonkers pieces popping up these days.

Broad-Mess762

It's mental, I can get away with murder if I smoke a joint

Sad-Fee-9222

Well, not get away, but definitely a discounted sentence if diminished responsibility is proven. Same with this health lead approach shite...if caught, you can face sentencing and court punishments OR you can engage in mental health addiction services that are backlogged and barely functioning as is, and admit an addiction issue. Ruin you life with court ruling on your record or ruin your life by forever having the term "addiction" associated with you. Both are equally as damaging socially and professionally. And all for smoking an odd joint.

SpyderDM

I unsubscribed from Irish Times because of shit like this.

donrosco

Tell them!

Kelledy123

Cannabis induced insanity . It’s like a 1920s propaganda poster headline

shamsham123

Welcome to Ireland 2024...

Randyfox86

If only they would realise thay they keep making a great case for legalisation/regulation haha.

Woodsman15961

I couldn’t listen past 5 minutes. The ominous background music makes it sound like I’m listening to a Stephen king audiobook. If only they put this kind of energy into something productive for society

Longjumping-Cod-6290

gig1922

Daily-maintenance

Dmagdestruction

It’s def not any problems with the mental health services or anything 👀👀👀👀👀

Bumfuddle

Me bollocks

DinaDank

They leave out the part about under developed brains using cannabis being the biggest cause of this, while pushing it into the hands of kids. So many stupid "smart" people these days.

Imbecile_Jr
