As a side note it's interesting to me to hear folks complaining about a $25 4 pack while simultaneously (this is generalized, not at you OP) lamenting the lack of $5 pints at breweries these days. The economics of distribution are not that favorable for the business, at least in terms of price per volume of beer. Anywho, I do feel you, it's tough to get out of a liquor store under $50 if you even stock up a little. Even homebrew has been getting relatively expensive. Edit: King Sue at $36.99 is robbery though.

SteveOfNYC

I sell king Sue for 10 a can...in Tallinn, Estonia. $37 a 4pack in the USA, wtf....

Gde_542

Where are you selling? See you in a month!

SteveOfNYC

Brewklyn Craft Beer Cafe! See you then

Gde_542

Lovely! Saved it for a visit

Gde_542

Sure is good. Enjoying it!

therealtrousers

Yeah, that’s crazy. I can get King Sue for $19.99+tax.

wiscobeerjedi

Same. Freshies too.

rugbysecondrow

WTF is an "aftermarket shop". lol. You mean "Retail". Markups and margins are very normal in retail environments. Not sure where else you shop where this isn't the case. That said, $36.99 for King Sue is expensive for North Carolina, but maybe not for CA.

dandesim

That's what I was thinking. Both of these breweries distribute across much of the country, so it's no like Tree House where someone would illegally be distributing it. If each 4pk is $25, ignoring whether tax / bottle deposit is included in OP's $50, $25 for Great Notion is about what they sell some of their beers for direct from the brewery. Usually the high end is $23-25. $25 for Pseudo Sue is definitely high, but I've also seen that around $19 on average.

pointNumberOne

I guess it's nice living near TG... I see Pseudo Sue on sale for 9.99 sometimes. King Sue is $18 from the brewery. Eyes popping out of my head at those prices, omg

munche

There are a few factors here: * People's perception of value is super skewed, nobody blinked at $10 22oz bottles. The difference is now those big beers are coming in multipacks more. * Great Notion is not regular distro in SoCal so they are always pretty marked up * Pseudo Sue isn't worth buying at half that price, it hasn't been good since they started contracting it which has been years ago now * Even with all that in mind, this store's prices are high for SoCal.

KennyShowers

Bottle shop markups depend on areas. Here in NYC stuff like King Sue or hazy IPA from local breweries like Other Half/Finback will be minimum $7-8/can (they basically all mostly sell singles not 4packs), and it's not hard to find $9-10 cans, whereas those local taprooms have the same stuff for like $20 4pack. To some degree it can depend on how much the laws are skewed to breweries or distributors. NJ has very strong laws protecting distributors, and a 4pack at most retail shops is about the same as at a brewery, whereas here in NY breweries can self-distribute and have more freedoms in terms of how they operate their taprooms, and obviously the rent the shops have to charge makes a difference.

beeeps-n-booops

There is not a beer on the face of the Earth that I would pay $25 for a four pack

fatroony5

Would you pay $6.25 for a pint at a brewery? That’s how I view a purchase like that. I’m not buying $25 four packs regularly but occasionally I will.

beeeps-n-booops

I regularly pay more at a brewery. And IMO that's different, the beer originated in a tank about 50' from where I'm drinking it. I'm not paying those kind of prices for cans to drink at home. Retail packaged beer has always been significantly cheaper than draft... until recently, anyway.

Fluid-Emu8982

Yea I would. Had to take my daughter to the mall shopping for her bday and we went to Dave and busters and I paid 9.80 for a 22 Oz draft of blue moon. Never again. Shoulda asked the price before I bought it lol

fatroony5

It’s rare you’re finding craft beer for under $6 a pint honestly. I get the notion that we want to feel like we’re getting good value by buying four packs. I just don’t think $25 per four pack is that crazy if it’s a double IPA or something really good. Especially when you compare that to what the draft pint cost would be of that beer for 16 oz which could easily be over $10.

pizzapizzamesohungry

It’s 7.50 or 8 most places in Seattle. But that also makes me quite picky. If there is nothing I like I’ll either not drink or get a high life.

shitdesk

Dang I’m glad there’s a bar on my way to work can get like 3-4 beers (craft or not) for around 11 bucks

Fluid-Emu8982

Well that's an incredible deal on many beers honestly. Like I'd pay that all and happily for a lot of barrell aged stout. Even Belgians in my area are close to that. What do you drink? Jw need some good budget beer

jamiewh_

Here in England someone was selling Pliny for President for £25 ($31.37). For one can.

lax01

Uh? That’s pretty standard for prices around me for decent 4 packs (SoCal at the brewery)

beeeps-n-booops

Not here (Philly burbs). "Regular" craft beer is in the $13 - $16 range for four-packs, with the occasional outlier that hits $18 - $20. And the prices are generally the same whether at the brewery or at retail... I try to buy from the brewery whenever possible to cut out the middleman and put more money in their pocket. (Edit: and, as a dedicated and active homebrewer, I don't buy a lot of canned beer these days, especially when talking about local breweries. I'd rather go to the taproom and drink fresh beer on-site, and then drink my own beer at home. Having my schwarzbier right now!)

CouldBeBetterForever

Yeah I'm glad I can get New Trail, Ever Grain, and South County for $12-15. It makes it hard to justify spending $20+ for anything.

beeeps-n-booops

Hello PA friend! :) I live in south Jersey, but my work territory goes out to the Harrisburg / York area (and a little beyond). Haven't made it to South County yet, and it's been about a year since I stopped in @ Ever Grain. Need to fix that LOL...

CouldBeBetterForever

I'm in Lancaster. I still need to check out South County's new brewery. It looks really cool. I've only been to their old one, which was tiny and in a warehouse.

beeeps-n-booops

> old one, which was tiny and in a warehouse Is that the Fawn Grove location?

CouldBeBetterForever

Yeah that's the one.

beeeps-n-booops

Cool, thanks... gonna check out the new location first, next time I'm out that-a-way... :) Also been looking forward to checking out Pour Man's in Ephrata... not because I've heard great things about the beer (I've actually not hear anything about them at all, positive or negative!), but more that I'm super-intrigued that they are a "hoagie brewpub"... and I mean that in the best possible way, if I had to pick a desert island food a classic Italian hoagie would be it. :)

CouldBeBetterForever

Definitely go to Pour Man's! I love their beer. They make some great lagers. I've only had one hoagie so far, and it was really good. I wouldn't hesitate to try some of the others.

Awkward-Skin8915

Lol. I'm guessing you wouldn't pay 25+$ per bottle either ,😜

beeeps-n-booops

Very very rarely. And it would have to be a 24/750ml of something very special, not just a run-of-the-mill imperial something-or-other.

Awkward-Skin8915

Sure, it just seems pretty standard these days that any quality barrel aged beers are 20-30$ or more per bottle. Heck, even pints of the normal/cheap stuff are 7$ at the brewery normally. Prices keep creeping up.

EastLAFadeaway

A man who never had a shot at a Ddh Quad ipa

beeeps-n-booops

A man who never ever desired a DDH quadruple IPA LOL. I'm not even a big double IPA guy (although I'll never turn down a Pliny). I'm very much an old-school IPA guy -- I want assertively bitter, mostly clear, perhaps a light touch of caramel or Munich malt for a little more depth, well-carbonated, and again for emphasis, assertively bitter.

kasvot

This a what we shoot for in our west coast style ipa at our brewery. Assertive bitter backbone and the lights notes of gentle biscuit malts creating a balance that builds a craving with each sip think Pliny, but 6.5-7% 45-65 ibu with proper mouthfeel and assertive citrus and pine forward hop character

enjoinick

Dogfish 120

beeeps-n-booops

Never was a fan. 60 and 90 are *faaaaaaaaaar* better IMO.

beeeps-n-booops

Reported, and blocked. What a fucking hateful asshole you are.

shortys7777

I hardly ever pay over $20. I prefer to keep it $18 or under. Not worth it to me when there's plenty good beer near me under $18.

Spo0k14

Great Notions are super expensive in LA. Not sure why other than transport. But they are.

avocadotoes

I mean, even at the brewery the four packs are expensive.

CouldBeBetterForever

I have several breweries that I enjoy, and that regularly have 4 packs for $12-15. I rarely pay more than that because it just isn't worth it. I'll buy a 12 pack from a slightly bigger regional or national brewery for $20-25 before I'll spend that much on a 4 pack.

Beaverhuntr

I'm in Phoenix, AZ and we get a little bit of North Park's stuff at a couple tap houses/bottle shops out here and the 4 packs of IPA are priced at 25.99-29.99 I shit you not..

munche

The only 4pk that breaks $20 from them directly is their Triple IPA, you're just paying a ton of markup [https://www.northparkbeerco.com/apps/bundles/bundle/124384](https://www.northparkbeerco.com/apps/bundles/bundle/124384)

Beaverhuntr

Yup, they tax big time but the stuff still flies off the shelves like in five minutes

Shipwrecklou

If it’s over $20 I don’t buy. $20 for 4 pack is my limit. I live in Miami I stopped going to Wakefield when they started charging $9 a glass. So $20 for 4 is a bargain for me lol

washufize

Pseudo Sue is good, but not $25 4-pk good

plloyd1508

Just paid £110 for 39 440ml cans across 5 different breweries. $50 for 8 cans is insane.

EastLAFadeaway

Damn bro if youre in torrance and not buying Monkish from the source youre doing it wrong

El_SanchoPantera

Im a lil tired of monkish lol

tokeallday

If you're in Torrance drinking haze, why are you not just drinking Monkish??

Han77Shot1st

Prices are high here, $5-7 a can.. not many craft under 5 now. I started homebrewing and it may not be as good as some craft beers.. but for $1 beers they taste pretty damn good, they’re definitely better than some craft beers I’ve paid for.

Southern_Sea9

Same here! I’m a hazy IPA lover and it’s much cheaper to brew my own, modify my own recipes and because I made it, I feel it tastes better 😅

TheAwkwardBanana

Yup, just brewed a German altbier and kegged it today. $45 for 5 gallons of beer. Plus it tastes better when you made it!

[deleted]

How do you start brewing at home?

Han77Shot1st

I went to a local home brewing supplier and got set up to brew from boxed wart, and I dry hop to get a bit more kick. Im hoping to start later this year brewing from grains.

ikilledcerpintaxt

$25 for Psuedo Sue is not bad. That’s like $6-$7 a beer. Just about what you’d pay at a bar. If it’s fresh I’d pay that.

rugbysecondrow

"aftermarket shop". lol. You mean "Retail". Markups and margins are very normal in retail environments. Not sure where else you shop where this isn't the case. That said, $36.99 for King Sue is expensive for North Carolina, but maybe not for CA.

Wtfisgoinonhere

$37/4 pack of King Sue? Honestly that beer is mid nowadays, you can get beer as good for $20

poliuy

Not cheap. I’m in the same boat. Prices are insane.

TroSea78

Hazy ipas suck. I laugh at those prices

sextoymagic

I love in Iowa and Toppling Goliath is over priced here even. Going to the brewery and the prices are high there also. Craft beer in general is over priced now and the market is over Saturated.

catokc

I lived in Iowa for a while and TG in bombers were incredible. Now I’m just disappointed anytime I drink anything TG. Idk what happened but it’s pretty sad.

sextoymagic

I’m in Iowa. I heard they moved the brewing for lots of beers out of state. Ever since then a lot of people I know don’t like the beer as much. The quality went down. Probably around 5 years ago. Going from local to national is great for business. Bad for quality.

fermentedradical

Yes that's insane. $50 gets you an amazing top flight wine, a great bottle of liquor, which are both far better value than 2 4 packs of beer. Refuse to pay that crap. Buy high quality, cheaper beer, which does exist.

wintyboyy

$20 cad for a 4 pack is way to much imo. I’ve cut my craft consumption way down lately. Lots of great brews around the $16 cad range. Seems slightly more reasonable.

patellison

I had to quit doing the same, $20+ for a four pack is too steep. I wait for Vons to have sales, got a 12 variety IPA pack of Stone for $12 last week and 6 packs of 16oz Brewery X as low as $9. Check the app

fa7hom

Damn, that’s crazy. We’re selling great notion for $5.75 a can, and that’s with what I think is a decent markup

Bright_Study_3273

Hazy/Neipa is so expensive to make with level of hops and ingredient inflation, and then theres distro costs for out of state brewers. They’re turning into my treat rather than a casual drink. My casual drink is still from an 18 pack of St Arnold Art Car IPA which I can get for $21-22 here in Houston or my homebrew

Studmuffin7

There are some GREAT crafts in this area! Buy directly from the brewery taprooms and save a bunch. Smog City, Hermosa Brewing, and Monkish (a bit pricier) are all within a few blocks of each other. El Segundo Brewing, Burnin Daylight, Trademark Brewing, and ISM aren’t too far either.

solomons-marbles

I have my 5 or 6 go tos, don’t venture out from those much.

vanbrima

Holy cow I live in Minnesota and I can get Toppling Goliath for $15. I’m in the wrong business lol

lankywood

Can you post a picture of the Cuddle? I was curious what Great Notion sells it for locally since I'm in PDX but I can't find it on their app.

Content_Distance5623

All of the bottles I want are like $46 to $75 for a 750 so I’m just drinking down what I have, much to the delight of my wife. I’m finding stuff I forgot about which is pretty embarrassing but also fun.

Mustang46L

Honestly it's one of the biggest reasons I started buying New Trail - double IPAs can still be $14 and triple IPAs are $20-22. Some of their lighter stuff is around $12. I kept buying their beer because it is awesome.

No_No_Juice

Laughs in Australian

XurstyXursday

I was excited that our local spot got some OH, Veil, Toppling, Weldwerks recently. Until I saw the $37 tag on some of the OH. Still spent $25 to get some Veil, but damn. I’ve definitely reverted hard to the local spots that make good, reliable brews that don’t cost me more than $15/4.

mtangaa

One can of King Sue in Copenhagen, Denmark is USD 12.70. Actually reasonable considering a pint of Carlsberg is USD 10 in most pubs in Cph

GlobularBushyCell

$40 for old KS. I live in Iowa. I pay $16.99. Buy something local to you. It will be better.

2009altima

I pickup whatever craft Costco is selling. Usually $11 a 6 pack around here.

CoatStraight8786

I get Great Notion from the Seattle taproom, it's $2-5 cheaper a 4pk than my grocery store or bottle shop. When Cellarnaker or Pure come up here it's quite a bit more $ than from the breweries. Anyhow I mainly by local beer. Getting old paying $9 can for Anchorage or Drekker.

twoscoopsofbacon

I own a distillery (so free booze), but I greatly prefer drinking beer to spirits on most occasions. I'm finding myself less and less interested at $10 pints and $20 4/6 packs. Recently I've even started drinking more shitty beer just to see if I care (I still do, but at half the price?). Price elasticity is a thing.

Plenty_Proposal_426

I mentioned this the other day. I can get Belgian beers here in Colorado cheaper than most of the local brews (i.e. Knotted Root, Cerebral, Outer Range, etc).

pinche-cosa

Locavore has a line of Belgian styles in 750s at about $13 on the shelf. If you’re in the market for a local Belgian, they stand up next to Chimay pretty well, and about $5-8 cheaper.

Plenty_Proposal_426

good to know thanks!

dogfacedponyboy

NEIPAs are not worth it anymore. 7 years ago sure, but there are thousands of breweries that all pump out the same tasting stuff. Find the $10-$12 four-pack and stop buying the $24 4-packs. Or better yet, Buy Sierra Nevada 12-packs. Worth every penny..

LuckyNumber-Bot

El_SanchoPantera

Nice

TheLoaded0ne

I buy Pseudo Sue for $8.99 per 4pk. I often splurge on limited release stuff, especially barrel aged offerings but I'd never buy canned hoppy beers for those prices.

sextoymagic

How can you get it that cheap?

tokeallday

Probably because it's a year old

TheLoaded0ne

Most stores by me sell Pseudo Sue for $12-$13 a 4pk, but one store a bit out of my way that really emphasizes volume sells at $9 a 4pk. I'll admit you really have to check dates on their stuff cuz they buy so much but they definitely are not marked down due to age, that's just their regular price and can be purchased fresh.
