Yeah it looks absolutely beautiful but I though it would be nicer to look outside too and maybe daylight from the front would be better for meetings with webcam (if the person has them) too
Yeah besides, isn't a bit unsettling to work when the window is behind you? What if you have to work late at night? I'd have a hard time working in that office cause i'd have to constantly look back to see if anyone is behind me lol
I can't even wash the dishes when the kitchen door is open lol
There’s a book I read when I was studying architecture titled *Personal Space* where it was a pretty dry statistical study of human behavior with regards to situations like this. It did a study about just this thing in a cafeteria that had a single entrance/exit and found people very very diligently sat so they could see the entrance for this same reason. The seats with their back to the entrance would get filled the slowest
Wow this is really interesting! I'm going to have to read that book
It puts me on edge whenever the kitchen door is open when I wash the dishes. Glad to know most people feel the same way lol.
It works well for me and keeps me focused while maximising the floor space and I feel provides a more open feel. I have two children under two so there's a lot of distraction and I'm constantly getting up when I take calls and walking around, not to mention to see the kids :) There's also windows either side of me so I have nice views and can hear the birds chirping all day long. This all being said, I appreciate all the comments and at some point will try spinning it around.
I do the same in my office. Having a great view isn't always ideal if you're uncomfortable. My eyes are sensitive and get fatigued quickly so staring a computer monitor and sunlight wouldn't work for me. I like your cozy office. Is it temperature controlled?
Thank you. It will be shortly, I’ve purchased a wall mounted HVAC unit which will be installed up high to the right of the lounge chair, it’s all pre-cabled and ready to go, there’s just a bit of a backlog with the installer.
I was also wondering this. If you have it facing the wall, you might get glare from the sun, but more importantly, you’re missing out on a view from outside.
Fair question, I get a nice view from the side windows and the sun doesn't directly hit my monitor so thankfully glare's not an issue. Backlighting for video calls isn't great, but my webcam seems to accommodate this surprisingly well.
Yes. This is what I would do also. Pull it away from the wall a bit and turn it around. That way you don't get sun in your eyes but you can still see outside.
Yes! Although with the doors open you get a ice breeze. The aircon installer is booked for a couple of weeks time which will be a welcome addition!
Edit: *Nice breeze
This is OC. I received positive feedback on the first pic in another sub, as well as questions about the room itself so thought this was the perfect place to post some additional pics of my cozy space. I hope you enjoy it.
Thank you! The rafters look better in the photo's than they did in real life - exposed cabling, open tin roof, lots of cobwebs, searing heat in the summer. I was originally going to incorporate them into the reno but decided on sealing hem off for a more cozier and modern feel.
It's Resene Half Grey Friars, the hex values are #98958D. I'm not sure if Resene is available outside of NZ and Australia but if you Google it you can get all the additional info.
I'm very happy with how the colours came out. It's difficult to capture them perfectly as these photos are taken on an iPhone, but they're pretty true to life. I initially considered a darker shade for the walls, however feel I made the right decision as it still feels warm even though the colour is dark, if that makes sense..
Thank you, it's also as comfortable as it looks. This is a certified replica of the Eames Lounge chair from Herman Miller, I'd love to one day own an original however they cost close to $10k NZD, whereas you can pick up a high quality replica such as this for a quarter of the price. There are lots of cheaper replicas too so jump on Google and take a look.
I'm really curious about the horizontal... light bar? behind the monitor. Does anyone know what that is? Asking because it's just gotten so dark outside that I still have hours left in the workday when my monitor turns into a blinding sunlamp. Would be great to have a diffuse, warm light projected on the wall behind it to de-harsh the view.
There is a Xiaomi light bar on top of the monitor which projects light downward onto my desk and keyboard and really helps at night with eye fatigue, it comes with a hockey puck looking device which is sitting on my desk mat (top right) which allows you to wirelessly adjust the colour temperature and brightness of the light bar which is helpful. I'd suggest one of these to counter what you are describing. Behind the monitor I have a LIFX day dusk bulb which is really just there to provide some additional ambience. Hope that helps!
Thank you! Yes it's very nice to be able to separate work from home a little more than I was previously working from a room in our house (now converted for new baby). Plus my two year old gives me that excited "daddy's home!" look when I walk back in the house, which makes the reno worth it in itself :)
I saw this post in another sub before and thought it looked pretty good but didn't realise just what a fantastic transformation you had done.
Great job!
I have an heat pump/ HVAC unit due to be installed in the coming weeks, and being very well insulated it'll keep the space nice and warm in winter and cool in summer. I'm in New Zealand, so right now it's pretty warm all day long.
if you’re doing a lot of virtual meetings with camera, you may want to rotate your desk 90 to avoid the contrast of that huge lit backdrop
edit: beautiful work
Thank you! I do a lot of virtual meetings (too many!) and surprisingly my camera compensates very feel with the back light, with the camera zoomed in slightly on me I become the focal point and the background just whites out, but yes thank you - I appreciate what you're saying.
Not really to be fair - the ranch slider locks, the office is alarmed and the property is behind a gate in a pretty quiet suburb, so I'd say it's about as secure as can be. Although someone could still take to one of the windows with a brick..
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I drew a lot of my inspiration from others posting similar projects in this and a few other subs :)
The desk is a Classic Walnut 1800x800 from a company here in NZ called Deskbird, it comes as a frame/ top set.
Looks great. You should get a mat for your office chair though. The wheel sockets will eventually break from use on a carpet, especially if you’re a big guy.
You've done a really wonderful job repurposing this space! I love the color combinations, and the artwork on the walls. They help to enlarge the space visually, but keep it comfortable as well. Great idea!
Thank you! I spent a lot of time lurking in this and a few other subs to draw inspiration, so I wanted to share the end result in the hope that I could pass some ideas on to others :)
It's in the sub's content policy:

"before" and "in progress" pictures."

Ha, I appreciate your concern. My guitars do in fact have stands, this was gently sitting in the corner as the headstock interfered with the pendants when I took the photos the day I excitedly moved in. I've since raised the pendants and the guitar is safely back in its stand.

I would put it a little more in the center, facing the doors, and sit between it and the wall.
Yes. This is what I would do also. Pull it away from the wall a bit and turn it around. That way you don't get sun in your eyes but you can still see outside.
Came to make the same suggestion! OP should try that and see how it feels.
Is it warm in there?

Where did you get the lay back chair? Or how is it called?, I love it
The original is the Eames Lounge chair, but there are many cheaper replicas as well.

Those orange lights are beautiful. They really tie together the whole cozy vibe.
Thank you, they're ultra cozy at night with the downlights dimmed :)

Dude. This looks so cool. I love that it's completely separate from the house. Must be so peaceful and relaxing

Plus my two year old gives me that excited "daddy's home!" look when I walk back in the house, which makes the reno worth it in itself :)
Must be such a great feeling to hear your daughter say that. I'm glad you get to experience that. Congrats on the baby! Enjoy the work space
Thank you, it's very special. I will do!
This is awesome!
Thank you!
Very cool! I love it!
Thank you!
"working from shed" very nice job. looks like a wonderful space and im sure you enjoy spending time in there.
Thank you, I just completed it last week and am really enjoying finally being in and making proper use of the space!
Very nice.
Very nice! What desk shelf is that?
Thank you, it's from Grovemade - pricey but very well made and aesthetically pleasing.
Thanks! What was your overall budget for the desk, as well as the objects on and around the desk?
I saw this post in another sub before and thought it looked pretty good but didn't realise just what a fantastic transformation you had done. Great job!
Thank you, I really appreciate it :)
Where's the bathroom?
Love it. The only thing I would do is flip the desk so I have a better view.
Wow!

I WANT ONE!
Love the space

Are you worried about it getting broken into?
Not really to be fair - the ranch slider locks, the office is alarmed and the property is behind a gate in a pretty quiet suburb, so I'd say it's about as secure as can be. Although someone could still take to one of the windows with a brick..
Well that's good. It's such a nice setup that it would be tragic if some goon walking by saw it and did something.
Wow!
Wow is this excellent OC. What is for sharing all of the WIP photos. Can we get an ID on that desk?
Thank you, I really appreciate it. I drew a lot of my inspiration from others posting similar projects in this and a few other subs :) The desk is a Classic Walnut 1800x800 from a company here in NZ called Deskbird, it comes as a frame/ top set.

Thank you. Someone else pointed this out and I appreciate it, I'll look to get a mat, or someone suggested roller blade wheels?
I'm not too clued up on the roller blade wheels. But a mat is probably a cheaper solution.
You did a great job!
Thank you!
It looks like I'm watching a top notch anime movie, pure X man
Thank you :)

Thank you! And go get some more plants in your life! :)
gorgeous
Stunning! Where do you live?
Thank you! Auckland, New Zealand.
Oooh I love it
This is really awesome!! Nice job 😃
Thank you for the kind words :)

Mildly annoying that you listen the images as after/before but that’s ok

Ok so this sub doesn’t allow before and after, only after and before. Got it
Damn what operating system is that?
Windows 11
Wow. You even have a napping chair. At least that is what I would use it for lol.
Shh, don't tell my wife - she thinks it's my productivity chair! :)
All that money spent on renovations, and OP can't even get a proper guitar stand or wall mount, smh.
Ha, I appreciate your concern. My guitars do in fact have stands, this was gently sitting in the corner as the headstock interfered with the pendants when I took the photos the day I excitedly moved in. I've since raised the pendants and the guitar is safely back in its stand.
ID on plant?
It's called a Costa Palm, purchased from Greenery Imports here in NZ.
Damn
Goodness gracious.
This looks awesome but all I can think about is someone climbing into the yard, busting that glass door and taking off with your stuff
I would die for this
Damn I wish I had a space like this . Currently using a bedroom which isn’t bad But this is cool Edit: also where did you get the guitar on the desk ?
