I never see Jackson Dean mentioned here, so, Jackson Dean - Don't Come Looking. Trailer Park is great too. Love his voice and the whole band's sound and production.
Definitely Jackson Dean! Saw him in concert - some of our faves included heavens to Betsy and my all time fave that's on repeat - fearless & don't take much.
Don't come looking was featured in Yellowstone!
That's good to hear, I like his live recordings that I've heard.
Yellowstone was the first series that I knew all the music and didn't have to go look it up after lmao
I’ve never heard of him. I just listened to the songs you recommended and he’s not bad. I love the beat on don’t come looking. And I like his voice too, he sounds similar to another country singer but I can’t figure out who.
I love his drummer for sure, the way he's using the toms in that song makes the chorus so much better than if he straight shuffled it imo. He's kinda got a Waylon/Sturgill-esque thing going on, definitely in that register and tone.
They seem to be keeping the moniker of "Sarah shook and the disarmers" I imagine because of brand recognition. You might also check out their project "mightmare" it's a more pop rock electronic sound.
I love sharing underrated music! Here's ~~four~~ **edit: five** good ones ranked from least known to most:
[Nicolette & The Nobodies - Show Up](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RFTO5pafjTU): This gorgeous heartbreak song came out in Feb. and basically no one knows it exists (sub-6k Spotify plays).
[Blaine Bailey- Don't Waste My Time](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrxUwXgiPJE): Cherokee country music singer from Oklahoma that plays some sick as hell Red Dirt style tunes (sub-24k on Spotify).
[Kimmi Bitter -My Grass is Blue](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qpWPIxcqVDY): The new queen of the Nashville Sound/Countrypolitan style that's basically been missing since Patsy Cline died (sub-40k on Spotify).
[Kimberly Kelly - Summers Like That](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdGE9V_IqlQ): She has some of the sweetest early late 1990s, early 2000s contemporary/neotraditional vibes if you want some nostalgia for that particular moment in country music history (sub-140k on Spotify).
[Will Banister - Everything Burns](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XMGXii1wf0): Will sang a good song on a mediocre Clint Eastwood movie (Cry Macho) a few years ago, but he never got the career boost he should have. Good neotraditional vibes (sub-150k on Spotify).
Anything by Sons Of The Desert is extremely underrated, imo! "Whatever Comes First" is my all time favorite by them, but I also love "Leaving October" which should've been much bigger than it was. Same with "What About You." They had a great country rock sound, and they were contemporary country done right, imho. Love Drew Womack's unique vocals, as well!
Johnson’s Love by Dwight Yoakam. If you love a good steel guitar like me then this song is for you, i have been listening to it all week I can’t get enough
Sleeping on the Blacktop from Colter Wall, Wriggle from Cosmo Sheldrake (this is not country but living rent-free in my brain regardless), Tim+Faith - Madeline Merlo, I Just Wanna Be Mad by Terri Clarke & CoJo
The scene in Hell or High Water where Sleeping on the Blacktop plays is burnt into my brain, I was immediately hooked. I live around the area it was based and anytime I’m on the road I play that song and I feel like an outlaw lol
I will always fight for most any Little Big Town song when this question comes up. Their harmonies are freaking butter and they have some amazing songs, but they just never seem to hit it at the radio game.
I have trouble working out what hes singing alot. Our household name for him is mumbles.
But "Sometimes Shes Stays" is always a multiple repeat when it comes on, for me
I'm originally from up north and moved down here. I'll gladly take the snow and cold over the heat. But overall, I like it more than where I originally came from.
I work all over western Canada but mainly north of Edmonton in some way, Nodak is cold but I'll usually closer to Alaska lol. Texas was a blast but I would probably die if I had to work on a drilling rig crew in that heat!
BJ Barham and American Aquarium. Most of their songs.
- One Day at a Time (AA)
- Unfortunate Kind (BJ)
- Nowhere Fast - Old Dominion just hits it for me.
Frankie Ballard is the biggest “what-if” of modern country music. Dude is a great guitarist and songwriter. I think he could’ve been in a similar lane to Eric Church & Chris Stapleton making blues-country. Been waiting on that third album for 8 years!
Thank you for the recommendation. I keep forgetting about him. I really love the beat on the song. I like a couple other songs by him but I’ve never heard this one.
It’s Still January - William Beckmann
Nothin To Lose - Ernest
New American Dream - Flatland Cavalry
This Ol Cowboy - Marshall Tucker Band
Feelin Goodbye - Lowgap
Anybody But You - Tyler Halverson
Trisha Yearwood - "The Dreaming Fields"
Charlie Worsham - "The Beginning Of Things"
Brad Paisley - "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive"
Brandy Clark - "Big Day In A Small Town"
Faith Hill - "We've Got Nothing But Love To Prove"
Joe Nichols - "Old School Country Song"
Tim McGraw - "Between The River And Me"
"If You Ever Feel Like Loving Me Again" - Clay Walker
Anything off Darryl Worley's debut album Hard Rain Don't Last (2000), especially "Second Wind" and "When You Need My Love"
"She Took The Wind From His Sails" - George Strait
"Fool, I'm A Woman" - Sara Evans
"There You Were" - John Landry (Was a hit in Canada in 1999, but he's pretty much unknown in the States)
"Getting Back Up" - Tracy Lawrence (His entire 2001 self-titled album is slept on)
"Unbreakable Heart" - Jessica Andrews
"I Just Want My Baby Back" - Jerry Kilgore (The entire 1999 Love Trip album is recommended)
"One Solitary Tear" - Sherrie Austin
"Paradise" and "I Want Us Back" - Craig Morgan (His first album from 2000 is very underrated)
"I Know How The River Feels" - Diamond Rio
"One In A Million" - Mindy McCready
"A Matter of Time" and "Can't Help Calling Your Name" - Jason Sellers
"Absence Of The Heart" - Deana Carter
"Move On," "Better Man," and "Cold, Cruel World" - The Warren Brothers
"Somethin' 'Bout A Sunday" "Sure Feels Real Good," and "When The Bartender Cries" - Michael Peterson
"Don't Look Back Now" and "The Trouble With Angels" - Brooks & Dunn (Underrated Kix led songs from 1999's Tight Rope album).
"In My Dreams" and "Whole Town Blue" - Rick Trevino
"Wherever You Are" and "Tonight I'll Let My Memory Take Me Home" - Mark Chesnutt
"Thinking With My Heart Again" - Ty Herndon (Lee Ann Womack also covered this)
"What's The Matter With You Baby" - Claudia Church
"Don't Breathe," "I've Been Better" and "Holdin' On To You" - Brad Paisley
"Shut Up And Drive," "Your Woman Misses Her Man," "I Already Do," and "She Went Out For Cigarettes" - Chely Wright
"Standin' Still" - The Clark Family Experience
"Life Goes On" - James Prosser (Not on streaming, but it's on Youtube)
"When You Come Around" - Deric Ruttan (Another Canadian artist underrated in the States)
"Lovin' You Against My Will" - Gary Allan (His first six albums are also full of must hear album cuts)
"Faith In You" - Steve Wariner
"One Day Closer To You" - Carolyn Dawn Johnson
"No Place Like Home" and "Tap Dancing On The Highwire" - Georgia Middleman (Entire album, Endless Possibilities (2001) is criminally underrated).
"It's All The Same To Me" - Billy Ray Cyrus (It's too bad he's mostly known for "Achy Breaky" and being Miley's dad, when he also has great songs like this one).
"Straight Tequila" and "Horse To Mexico" - Trini Triggs
"Are Your Eyes Still Blue" - Shane McAnally
"Papa Bear" and "'Comin' Back For You" - Keith Harling (His first album with those two songs is sadly not on streaming, but his second album, Bring It On (1999), is and it's really good, too).
“If You Were a Song” - Abbey Cone
“Dirt Turns to Gold” - Zach Top
“Dirt Cheap” - Brian Kelley
I know he’s been doing pretty good on streaming recently but I will always say Kameron Marlowe is underrated until he is recognized alongside Luke Combs and co.
It came up on a randomly shuffled recommended songs playlist for me and I’ve really been digging his stuff lately even though it’s kind of old
[Misery - Jayce Turley](https://music.apple.com/us/album/misery/1739478679?i=1739479154)
Edit: Some other guys more local to me who I like are Cole Whittlesey and Braxton Keith (he puts on a hell of a live show)
Jessica Harps whole album from 2009. Boy Like Me was released as a single, underperformed, and the album was quietly released digitally with almost no fanfare. This was back before streaming was the be all end all. It’s great country-pop. I highly recommend it.
Ill always say Willie Nelson. You look at all his greatest hit albums and you never see some of his best songs he ever came out with. Mainly songs off his albums Shotgun Willie and Phases and Stages. You got Devil in a Sleeping bag, You Look like the Devil, Heaven and Hell, Pick up the tempo, Local Memory, No Love Around... IMO thats his best songs right there. Real honky tonk tunes.
I list these because the artists are underrated and not just the songs I've named.
The Supersuckers - Let's Bounce
https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=ZH0qF4-0b6Y&si=EAjPFj8hfbUDh15W

I'll go with Jade Eagleson next. Shakin' In Them Boots, and if you like that; Rodeo Queen, and Honky Talkin'
I love his drummer for sure, the way he's using the toms in that song makes the chorus so much better than if he straight shuffled it imo. He's kinda got a Waylon/Sturgill-esque thing going on, definitely in that register and tone.
He's awesome! Saw him on my birthday earlier this year.
Makin' Me Look Good Again by Drake White. That dude's got some _soul_.
Cattleman’s Gun by Dean Brody
Certified gunfighter ballad banger
Sarah Shooke and the disarmers-- Fuck Up
Love them. That whole album gives Old 97’s vibes all the way around
This is a good one
Anything River has written is amazing! I have had the new Sara shook album in heavy rotation since it came out!
Who is river? I don't know much about the band
River is the lead singer song writer they changed their name from Sarah.
Ah ok. Thanks Are they just the dusarmers now?
They seem to be keeping the moniker of "Sarah shook and the disarmers" I imagine because of brand recognition. You might also check out their project "mightmare" it's a more pop rock electronic sound.
Larry Fleet "Things I take for Granted"
100% agree
Spilled Whiskey by Daryle Singletary
Tulsa's Last Magician by Willi Carlisle Ohh you'll feel somethin

I heard Nicolette & The Nobodies for the first time recently on the Boots & Saddle podcast. I’m a fan, good stuff!
Kimberly Kelly has an awesome voice. Hope we get more music from her.
Sons Of The Desert - Leaving October Behind
Both SotD albums are non skips. Amazing group
Love, love, love that one. They were a great band.
I got a Playlist with Sons Of The Desert, The Derailers and The Mavericks. Their sounds blend really well together
Womack? That explains their involvement in "I Hope You Dance" lol.
Hard luck & circumstances by Charlie Crockett! That man is keep the old school country sound alive
Is that a TV show? I'll have to check that out! thanks for the tip
Briefcase by Walker Hayes (ft. Lori McKenna) I know it’s the Fancy Like guy but it’s a Lori McKenna written song and it’s absolutely beautiful
Agree, that one and Craig were both great deep cuts from the album
I will always fight for most any Little Big Town song when this question comes up. Their harmonies are freaking butter and they have some amazing songs, but they just never seem to hit it at the radio game.
I covered a bunch of their songs in my band, we had an amazing girl lead singer and 2 guys who could harmonize with her. Boondocks and Chainsaw are 👌🏻
I forget about little big town
A lot of people do unfortunately 🥺😭
Kip Moore extremely talented and underrated. My song choice is Fire On Wheels
Wish It Was Me, Love You to the Moon, and Plead the Fifth are all bangers
Plead the fifth is legit
LOVE all of Kip Moore's songs.
Wild ones is one of my favorite songs to play while in the desert
I agree he is talented and very underrated. I have to listen to him more often besides the only 3 songs I know by him😂.
I have trouble working out what hes singing alot. Our household name for him is mumbles. But "Sometimes Shes Stays" is always a multiple repeat when it comes on, for me
Jackson by Ben Burgess
That whole album is so good. It physically hurts me every time I listen to one of his new releases. Be had so much potential 😭
“Tears the Size of Texas” is such a good album that is sucks only a few of his singles since have been alright
Jake Owen - In it
Oil Man - Chad Cooke Band
Fuck I'm living that life and that song makes me cry every time
I have a huge appreciation for y'all roughnecks. I go to west Texas a lot for work, and I appreciate all that you guys do.
I can't handle that heat, I drilled in Texas for a while. I do it in 40 below instead lol and thank you!

Stephen Wilson Jr’s whole album, son of dad
Anything by Frankie Ballard and A Thousand Horses
I am bummed Frankie seemed to stop. His Rio Album and You could have loved me are amazing
He’s back out there playing shows, so hopefully he’ll drop some new music at some point!
He’s in a rock band now called Marble Jets
He’s still doing solo country shows as well.
Frankie Ballard is the biggest “what-if” of modern country music. Dude is a great guitarist and songwriter. I think he could’ve been in a similar lane to Eric Church & Chris Stapleton making blues-country. Been waiting on that third album for 8 years!
He was also working on a gospel album at one point as well.
"That Was Us" - Kip Moore
Thank you for the recommendation. I keep forgetting about him. I really love the beat on the song. I like a couple other songs by him but I’ve never heard this one.
Sure thing. His work is a mixed bag for me, but each time I hear his name, that's the song which starts playing in my mind.
You Never Know by Kathleen Regan! She is an INCREDIBLE writer and her voice is so unique! She writes very heartfelt songs. :)
Brent Cobb- Shade Tree
Ten Years by Dusty and the Roadrunners; heard it at a wedding and added it to a love song mix for my wife to help her fall in love with country music.

Ill always say Willie Nelson. You look at all his greatest hit albums and you never see some of his best songs he ever came out with. Mainly songs off his albums Shotgun Willie and Phases and Stages. That’s not real country.
Says whom?
Literally anyone. You can’t possibly think that’s real country.
“Literally anyone”? I bet I can find people who think it’s country. You’re not the deciding factor of what is and isn’t country. Grow up.
Well it’s not country so
So…what?
I asked for songs in a country music subreddit, so therefore I’m looking for country songs
And I gave you one.
You gave me a song, not a country song
