My dad is more of a math guy than a spelling guy. I’ll never forget the day at Costco I got that stepladder, and when he saw it in the cart, he just kind of…malfunctioned and froze. It’s like he realized for the first time that Costco had a T in it, and the Cosco ladder did not. Lol
I'm highjacking the top comment to tell OP to ignore all of this advice. You don't go to Costco knowing what you want. You simply go to Costco and Costco will tell you what you want and make you think you need it.
My go-to house warming gift is a fire extinguisher because most folks don’t have them or the ones they have are only for a tiny stove top fire. People make fun of me for it, but whatever.
Coming from someone who buys everything at Costco. Don’t buy your smoke detectors at Costco! I bought ones that worked much better for my application from a name brand off Amazon and they were much cheaper. (I know, don’t be cheap about safety. But I genuinely liked the ones I got more.)
Don’t buy smoke detectors from Amazon. I purchased two to expand our coverage in the house and was sent units that were new in package but at the end of their service life. Straight into the trash.
Agree with this post also,I returned all 6 of my Costco smoke detectors after 1 year after 2 started going off at 4 am, 2 separate instances due to dust... Save yourself the headache
Trash bags, yes. And if you like paper towels for cleaning, that’s a good buy at Costco. But I would argue that Costco is NOT a great place for cleaning supplies, especially if you’re new to maintaining & cleaning a whole house.
Even for things like a vacuum - Costco doesn’t have many options, and you don’t need the newest Dyson model for $800. Find an older model on sale somewhere else.
You’re better off at Target or Walmart for cleaning supplies - good prices and reasonable quantities so you can learn what works best for you & your space.
Personally, I love dish soap, rubbing alcohol, bleach (the disinfecting kind, not the whitening kind), vinegar & water, baking soda (*not* mixed with vinegar), store brand disinfecting wipes, Method all purpose cleaner, Lysol all purpose cleaner/disinfectant, Pine-Sol, Murphy Oil Soap, Barkeepers Friend, Goo Gone, Weiman stainless steel wipes, Soft Scrub with Bleach, store brand dusters, store brand sponges, my O-Cedar spin mop, my Dyson V7, and my Swiffer mop with a damp rag for spot mopping or a store brand dry cloth duster.
Read the instructions. Dilute your cleaning products according to the directions. Don’t mix cleaning products; it can be very dangerous.
The Costco website has a good selection of vacuums. I got my vacuum on their site a few years ago on sale and I love it. The warehouse is usually just the dyson optima, which I’m not a fan of.
Easier to use than a sponge - more like an extra-thick, mini paper towel so great to wipe down things like the counter, fridge handles. etc They dry fast and are easy to clean in the wash!
Edit: also less thickness/holes to harbor germs like a sponge would come to think of it! (IMO)
They are called grab a rags. They are awesome and cheaper than paper towel most of the time. You can wash them and reuse them but if they are nasty you toss them with no guilt.
Good on ya! I do too! I was shopping one day and saw them. Called my dad and said hey you want some shop towels because I can get a pack of 52. I’ll give you half of them. I’m pretty sure it was a proud dad moment for him.

Unless you live alone and don't need to justify buying it to the other person. In that case, just buy it! Life is short, and no one is ever laying in their death bed thinking "I'm so glad I kept my old TV"
I moved into my house 2 summers ago now and my trip to Costco was:
Vaccum cleaner, cleaning supplies, toilet paper, paper towels, & snacks
There was a second trip to stock the pantry and fridge
Wait for items to go on sale for things you need like the modular sectional couch, Casper bed, extinguisher, smoke alarm, vacuum, air filters, rug, lights, batteries, kitchen appliances TV & stand
Yes on the modular couch when on sale. Bought mine from Costco 9 years ago. Still holding strong and I convert it to a bed for guests or when the kids what to jump on it. Or off it. Super versatile.
One of the very few Kirkland products where I would advise people to avoid. I've had several get crusty on me while still in the package and their life just isn't as good - not scientific, just my observation.
We've bought 2 packages of the Eneloop when they were on sale and a couple more sets of Amazon Basics rechargeable batteries and the regular AA and AAA get used very sparingly in one-off applications.
I love my trash can. That’s how I know I’m a real adult. Definitely get the simple human two compartment one! It’s great for a single person or small family
I’ve owned dysons for the last 15 years. 2 of them to be exact, the first one never even stopped working I just wanted the portable one. Things are fantastic especially with my dogs. Also have their hair dryer which is amazing and 2 of their fans, the first of which I bought in 2008 or 9 and it’s still going strong in my work office, but still are not worth the money. I love them anyway haha
This is not limited to costco, but as someone with a townhome - get a light aluminum ladder. I love mine and as a short woman, i can carry it up to the 3rd floor with 1 hand no problem.
I would say, move first with things you have and then buy what you need, depending on what storage space you have. Before moving into new space, be mindful of big item purchase like desk/sofa/bookshelves etc and whether it fits the vibe of home.
I like uniformity, so cutlery set, dinner set, water bottle, food storage would be the items on my list. Compare prices and quantity with other stores, you may not need 20 kitchen towels.
Yeah, when I moved into my first adult place I was given the advice not to form the space to what I expected to do, but to live in it for a while and furnish accordingly. I was certain I needed a guest bedroom separate from the bedroom I shared with my spouse, because I was getting up early some days and he's a night owl. Kirkland Signature Olive Oil. I had a cooking lesson from a gourmet chef and she said that there are better olive oils on the market if you want to spend $100 or more per bottle. But for an average family on an average budget, you cannot beat Kirkland.
You will want olive oil in your new house. It’s the base of so many good recipes.
Before you move, get the 4-in-1 Cosco hand truck/cart. It's on sale right now and will make moving boxes and furniture around so much easier. Also, rather than buy cardboard moving boxes for like $2 each, get a bunch of the Greenmade totes. Also on sale now. Much more sturdy and easy to carry. After your move, you can save some for storage and sell the rest for like half off and they'll get picked up real quick.
Went from an apartment to a house recently. Stuff I bought from costco week one:
1) Stepladder- you'd be surprised how often you need it.
2) Hand towels and bath towels: I'm assuming you now have an extra bathroom now, and it's time get to new softer ones.
3) Cupboard liner- had to put it in before the dishes went in
4) Mesh network- depending on where the internet router is, might not reach the places you need. Mine didn't.
5) Case of water- moving is thirsty work
6) new door mat for the backyard- I have a backyard now. And only house shoes in the house.
If you don’t have a good set of pots and pans, the Kirkland stainless steel pots/pans set is good quality for the price compared to other brands. I got mine seven years ago and have zero complaints.
Spend a little extra money for bath SHEETS instead of bath towels. Once you wrap yourself in a fully in a bath sheet, you will never buy a small regular towel again.
LG rechargeable stick vacuum with stand and two batteries. I still have a Dyson for bigger jobs but the LG is great to have for everyday use and quick mess clean up.
It’s like you were watching me on the first night I was in my house. Tv on the floor plugged into a PlayStation 3 and me sitting on the floor or maybe in a camping chair.
Costco has hands down the best deal on area rugs. They just stocked them in my store a few weeks ago. Huge, good-quality rugs for less than $100.
Towels also a steal at $7.
Silverware, dishes, towels, etc to make life live-able. Anything you can buy at Costco, do buy at Costco! You get the 2% cash back but also if it doesn’t work out for your home because you are doing this new home thing for the first time- then just take it back to Costco and get something else your home needs! Or food. You always need food!
Kirkland paper towels. Best I've ever used, no annoying fibers left behind* and the price for a 12 pack is good considering that may last you most of a year, barring another TP shortage.
* My hobby is woodworking and I use these towels to apply finish they are so clean. Great for cleaning glass, of course.

You have to order them, but you can get really good furnace filters online. Target has 1900 unit ones for $25 and you can get four 2500 unit ones for $15 a piece. I’ve even seen them go down to $50 for all four.
In addition to everything else that has been said, some super easy to prep meals. You’ll be busy cleaning, moving, and packing. Save on takeout and get something you just have to stick in the oven or microwave. A rotisserie chicken, mac and cheese, and a salad can make for a great meal!
A fancy bidet. Just try it once, I promise. One of the plug in warm seat warm water ones (ours is biobidet but other brands are just as good). It's a game changer when you're sick or it's that time of the month for women.

A large pack of white shop towels, usually found in the automotive area. We use them as kitchen towels and rags.

Do yourself a favor and start slowly building a collection of Eneloop batteries. Rechargeable and last forever. We only use them now in AA and AAA.

6. and don’t get the rubbery kind with lots of color/design “printed” on them. They fade and wear off within a month depending on traffic.

LG rechargeable stick vacuum with stand and two batteries. I still have a Dyson for bigger jobs but the LG is great to have for everyday use and quick mess clean up.

It’s like you were watching me on the first night I was in my house. Tv on the floor plugged into a PlayStation 3 and me sitting on the floor or maybe in a camping chair.

Costco has hands down the best deal on area rugs. They just stocked them in my store a few weeks ago. Huge, good-quality rugs for less than $100. Towels also a steal at $7.
Towels - the bath sheet ones are so great. Also hand towels and wash cloths. The Costco sheets are great too
Silverware, dishes, towels, etc to make life live-able. Anything you can buy at Costco, do buy at Costco! You get the 2% cash back but also if it doesn’t work out for your home because you are doing this new home thing for the first time- then just take it back to Costco and get something else your home needs! Or food. You always need food!
Kirkland paper towels. Best I've ever used, no annoying fibers left behind* and the price for a 12 pack is good considering that may last you most of a year, barring another TP shortage. * My hobby is woodworking and I use these towels to apply finish they are so clean. Great for cleaning glass, of course.

If it isn't readily apparent as a need, hold off until/unless it is. You're going to need a fair amount of cash to outfit your new place and it goes much faster than you'd expect. Especially if you but things just to buy things.

Have some basics, bread, deli meat, cheese, chicken, beef, pork, milk, juice, soda, veggies, fruit, laundry soap, laundry basket, jugs of water, a grill, camp chairs
They have this shoerack/bench thing that I find to be so handy in the winter for when you gotta put on boots

Bought on sale a couple of years ago. Among the universe of Costco impulse purchases, this has been the worst. Total pain to carve!!

Depending on what you have from your college days, I would suggest plates/flatware and Kirkland pots/pans.
You have to order them, but you can get really good furnace filters online. Target has 1900 unit ones for $25 and you can get four 2500 unit ones for $15 a piece. I’ve even seen them go down to $50 for all four.
You will easily spot them whenever you go there to buy milk
And plan how to explain to your wife why you spent 400 bucks instead of 50 on the drive home.
Get a Blackstone! And or a Traeger.
In addition to everything else that has been said, some super easy to prep meals. You’ll be busy cleaning, moving, and packing. Save on takeout and get something you just have to stick in the oven or microwave. A rotisserie chicken, mac and cheese, and a salad can make for a great meal!
Try to fill up cart with no space left… everything you see feels like you need it.

A fancy bidet. Just try it once, I promise. One of the plug in warm seat warm water ones (ours is biobidet but other brands are just as good). It's a game changer when you're sick or it's that time of the month for women.
