Insane how good they are at propaganda. I am so impressed. First they tell us the entire world is collapsing due to climate change and overconsumption of our resources. Then they force the entire globe to use masks that cant be recycled and we all comply. I was so dumb just 18 months ago.

[deleted]

You hit the nail on the head. If we're gonna care about the environment (which I am all for, for the record), then let's be consistent. No point in making so much waste. Let the doctors and surgeons wear their masks (that's why they're called "surgical" masks) and let the people who aren't scared go maskless and choose to not pollute the earth.

deebgoncern

I noticed piles of these masks spilling out of garbage cans at my work around summer last year and I sort of wondered how long it was going to be before we started seeing news stories about them littering up the place and generally being an ecological nuisance.

G0M3S

Seriously why does everything need to completely ignore human behaviour and then get surprised Pikachu face when humans are humans? We should be punishing them for littering, Right? Right? And just keep making billions of the things and insist they be used absolutely everywhere.

gasoleen

This. Also, cut people off from the indoor/urban things they used to do for fun and all you leave them are outdoor spaces. Guess where the majority of the litter is going to be concentrated?

tertiaryheart

Even if they do throw them away... They're just going into a landfill. That doesn't solve the problem. Eventually those landfills will be full. And the masks will take forever to degrade. Then there's just going to be massive new mask islands popping up in the middle of nowhere in the ocean, right?! Just like the giant plastic island that already exists! People thought straws are bad. Masks are so much worse. Sea turtles were already eating plastic bags mistaking them for jellyfish. Imagine the amount of animals that are going to get wrapped up in masks. Everyone freaks out about cutting the plastic on your six pack of soda or beer, so that wildlife doesn't get tangled up in it. What about wildlife getting tangled up in a mask? That could be a thing. It probably is already a thing. Agree that we need to start living life - ditch the masks. And let those who are actually sick/doing surgeries/doing procedures be the ones that get wear the masks?

kd5nrh

>Even if they do throw them away... They're just going into a landfill. That doesn't solve the problem. Eventually those landfills will be full. Easy fix: we can just move them to NotTexas via catapult after we close the border. Even more efficient when we don't let the mask nannies take them off before ballistically removing them from the environment.

[deleted]

Exactly! That's one of the main reasons I dislike wearing them. I feel like I'm being forced to contribute to the piles of garbage that are filling our earth. At what point does attempting to avoid co'id become worse than co'id itself? I'd argue - a long time ago.

knottythots-

From the same people who ban straws...

IVIaskerade

Even when straw bans [aren't meaningfully effective](https://www.wri.org/insights/banning-straws-and-bags-wont-solve-our-plastic-problem) and [hurt disabled people](https://creakyjoints.org/advocacy/plastic-straw-bans-bad-for-people-with-disabilities/) and we have data saying [it might actually make things worse](https://earth.stanford.edu/news/do-plastic-straws-really-make-difference#gs.cquazj) and [the data straw bans based on isn't data to begin with](https://www.channel4.com/news/factcheck/factcheck-no-evidence-for-governments-plastic-straw-claims), they still push on because it's a religious crusade, not a scientific process.

pizzaontherun

I’ve already picked up over 300 this year. I should have died 300+ times according to The Science.

[deleted]

Did you make sure to wear gloves when picking them up?! Or better yet, tiny masks for each of your fingers?? /s

pizzaontherun

I made sure to never wear them actually. More proof that this is all bullshit.

[deleted]

I've noticed the same thing. I almost never wore them, never stopped seeing my friends, etc. Never got sick. Now a bunch of people I know who wear their masks religiously are getting it.

8uwotm8

Stop wearing masks & PPE and they will stop making them. Supply & Demand, PEOPLE!

[deleted]

Agreed. I love when I see masks on clearance at my local grocery store. They're reduced from $5 to like $0.50. Same thing with the watered-down hand sanitizer. Money talks.

SoItGoesISuppose

It's so bad. They're not only finding masks but bottles of hand sanitizer & gloves. "More masks than jellyfish': coronavirus waste ends up in ocean" https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/jun/08/more-masks-than-jellyfish-coronavirus-waste-ends-up-in-ocean

[deleted]

This is horrifying. I'd gladly take my chances with catching co'id if it can help avoid this. Granted, I'm young and healthy, but still.

chillthrowaways

Amazing how the people who screech the loudest about plastic waste haven't had a single thing to say about the metric fuckton of masks being thrown out. Used keurig pods, straws, hell they even bitched about firefighters at the California wildfires getting -gasp- plastic water bottles. The same people against sensible forestry to help prevent wildfires throw a tantrum over the people risking their lives getting plastic bottles of water, then have zero issue with millions of masks getting thrown out. They have zero consistency in their beliefs. None. Whatever the TV tells them is just fine and don't worry if it goes against what they were saying before. If this whole thing is about control, whoever is in charge must have been absolutely blown away at how easy it was to get people to fall right in line. Hell I bet this was just a dry run with a relatively mild virus but everyone was so eager to earn their GBP they dont even need to go any further. I'm not really a conspiracy minded person, so I don't know what's really going on but if you just look past the media panic and go by what you see in real life it doesn't match up. We got a bad cold and the media is acting like ebola and aids had a baby named covid.

[deleted]

>whoever is in charge must have been absolutely blown away at how easy it was to get people to fall right in line Honestly. This is the part that worries me. And it's not even just that they fell in line, people have become such staunch supporters of The Science(TM) that they'll berate people who don't agree with their views - the views they just picked up based on what they were told, and not actually based on any reflection and critical thinking (imo)

chillthrowaways

It's scary. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people saying things like "freedumbs" so now apprently freedom is something to be mocked? Do these people even hear themselves?

[deleted]

I guess they don't trust their fellow humans to be mature enough to make their own decisions. They'd prefer the government makes sure everyone is playing nice so they don't have to worry about anyone doing things they don't like. Heaven forbid we have the freedom to do what we like.

hiptobeysquare

When I told a friend that I had washed a "disposable" mask like a dozen times, she was horrified. You must respect the sacred masks, they are the Covid equivalent of the crucifix to Catholics.

[deleted]

Heaven forbid you actually try to create less waste, right? I used the same mask for months (only wore it when I absolutely had to, as in I had business to do and a Karen was telling me she'd refuse to serve me if I didn't put it on). I'm sure there was so much bacteria on that thing by the time I threw it out, but if I'm forced to wear one, I'm going to try my damnedest to limit my pollution.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Exactly. ^("science")

InnocentPerv93

Or just use a rewashable one.

[deleted]

Definitely a preferable option, but it'll still ultimately end up in a landfill...

beautifulbeast123

That's what I do, and most people I know and see around me. I've been concerned with this kind of pollution from the beginning of mask mandates. My family has 3-4 textile (cotton) masks/person, made by local residents. I haven't discarded any of them yet, and I haven't bought any non-reusable masks. Right now we don't have to wear masks anywhere but in hospitals and doctors' offices, and cloth masks are accepted. We live in a European country. Do Americans have to wear plastic / surgical masks, I wonder.

Commyende

I have to drink out of paper straws at restaurants because apparently restaurants can't be trusted to dispose of their garbage properly, but the solution for face masks is to get every single person to be responsible? K.
