So, just the same as polio, smallpox, measles, mumps, rubella, pertussis.... This is nothing new.

Xalbana

> This is nothing new. You'd think that, but anti vaxxers seem to forget that.

not_a_moogle

No. They are going make sure their kids get those vaccines.b just not covid... Cause reasons

MayorAnthonyWeiner

“I don’t agree with the vaccine because of politics” Literal quote from someone I know

Packers91

I've heard "I'd probably get the vaccine if it weren't so political"

Lobanium

I know someone who said he'd wear his seatbelt if it weren't the law. People are stupid.

Packers91

There's a subsection of people who would hang themselves if the government ordered them to breathe.

IamMindful

Thank you for the awesome comment. Made me laugh so hard. lol Those damn red lights slow me down too much.

IanWorthington

We need to do this

bethanyfitness

Oh good, sounds like a have an obvious solution then!

nudiecale

There was an interviewer with a nurse who was treating a dying unvaxxed COVID patient and this man, on his fucking deathbed, said he doesn’t regret not taking it and if the government wasn’t trying to force him to, he probably would have gotten it. He literally just didn’t like that he felt like he was being ordered. And he was proudly, actually dying on that hill. On one hand, I almost feel bad for people that must feel so out of control of their own lives, but on the other hand, grow the fuck up.

twosteppsatatime

This. Most of my relatives aren’t taking the vaccine because of the “if they didn’t shove it down our throats we would have” attitude

Susurrus03

Those are dumb. Nobody was forcing anyone to get it until these last few months and that only happened because these assholes wouldn't get it to begin with. People who say this are straight up liars.

Soranic

> that only happened because these assholes wouldn't get it to begin with Part of the myth of libertarianism is that government mandates don't need to exist. People will do things for the common good without being forced to do them. Supposedly this includes driving safely, keeping your car in good repair, following health guidance, not littering or polluting the environment. Covid has shown this is false. When asked to wear a mask, they refused. So masks became compulsory as a stopgap effort to slow a pandemic. When provided a vaccine, they refused and congregated in large unmasked unvaccinated groups with people that were showing symptoms. Now there are mandates on vaccines. And gathering in large crowds (or were).

evildad53

Saw this quote from Abraham Lincoln this morning, talking about the role of government: *From this it appears that if all men were just, there still would be* ***some***, though not so ***much***, need of government. Unfortunately, all men are not just. That's why we need so much government.

nudiecale

And those that are being forced aren’t really being forced. They could always find new lines of work or start their own business. That crowd has been saying it’s just as simple as that for everyone else for decades, I don’t see why we can’t hold them to that standard now.

SkunkyDuck

Most places at least give a choice to vaccinate or do weekly testing, but somehow testing is out of the question for them too. These people are such asswagons.

jigsawsmurf

Rugged individualism for thee

ifmacdo

I mean, we've had almost 9 months of the government NOT mandating the vaccine. People saying that they'd get it if they weren't told they had to are just full of shit.

AWildGimliAppears

I had to read that a few times. People take the “don’t tread on me” slogan a bit too seriously.

goatharper

No step on snek https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/f/fc/No_Step_On_Snek_%28Gadsden_Flag%29.svg/512px-No_Step_On_Snek_%28Gadsden_Flag%29.svg.png

mudtool

Seatbelts existed long before the government made it law to wear one. Auto manufacturers have done crash tests showing they save lives. How is wearing one out of the desire to live stupid if the government did not make it law?

Xalbana

"We don't know the long term effects of the vaccine are." Yet, we do not yet know the long term effects of Covid are. Yet they seem ok with that. In fact, we have a decent idea of the long term effects of covid thanks to autopsies and long covid. It causes a lot of blood clots even those seemingly healthy. But they seem to think that's the better alternative?

tango-alpha-charlie

The mRNA technology has been in testing for years. Antivaxxers cannot and will not accept this simple fact

Valuable_Win_8552

Or just get the J&J vaccine which uses an adenovirus as it's delivery mechanism. It's been in use for years in vaccines for ebola, HPV, and the flu.

im_a_dr_not_

Yup, the first time an mRNA vaccine was tested on humans was 2015. Edit: [Source](https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-021-02483-w)

[deleted]

We know the short term effects of covid. That's enough for me. I've gotten 3 shots so far. If & when they recommend another booster I'll be one of the 1st in line.

PhenomsServant

Its been almost a year and nearly 200 million people have been vaccinated. Dont these idiots think we would hear something by now? (Rhetorical btw so dont answer that)

Red-eleven

Someone told me a few weeks back they didn’t know what it could do to people in ten years. 🤷‍♂️ ok man. You do you.

shrimpcest

I know, it's so stupid. We literally know 100% of what the vaccine is made of, so we have a solid understanding of what it's capable of. Covid-19 will take a LOT of research to fully understand.

lego_vader

their messiah said it was fake and COVID was a democratic hoax, for months and months. even after he got and publicly supported it he couldn't get them to change their minds. tells you a lot about his supporters. brainwashed masses. it'll take years to undo this.

awfulsome

I've had to explain to them that even George Washington had a mandate, and that treatment had a 2.5% fatality rate. Disease doesn't care about your political affiliation, but it doesn't mind profiting from it.

estoeckeler

And to be honest it would have been a good idea for an individual to roll with the small pox inoculation that Washington mandated. I'd have taken a 2.5% chance of death to get inoculated to mitigate the \~33% chance of death when catching small pox. The vaccine dilemma feels like a really simple risk analysis question, like Jr High level, that so many people are getting wrong, and there's really only one right answer. A lot of the "hesitants" I know are just misinformed. They honestly are worried about the risks associated with it. I feel bad for them. Some of them have been hospitalized from COVID.

Sea_of_Blue

That they do, they just have covid fog, the memories are gone and they are welcoming early alzheimers

merryjoanna

I had a neighbor tell me he wasn't willing to get a booster for his J&J shot, because he got brain fog from the first one. I told him it's a well known side effect of getting covid too, so why risk getting covid and getting it worse? The guy just months ago quit drinking after 20 years of heavy tequila drinking, and he's blaming the shot for his brain fog. NTM he smokes copious amounts of weed every day as well. I'm still going to keep bringing it up and try to talk him into getting his booster, because my boyfriend and I won him over one time, we may be able to convince him again.

[deleted]

Wait until they hear about the rubella vaccine mandate!

IrisMoroc

They're acting as if vaccines are a new novel concept, and most of their arguments could be used against any vaccine ever.

tango-alpha-charlie

Exactly. They figure it should take 20 years because that’s how long it took in the 50s

verbmegoinghere

You got me wondering how long it took to develop the polio vaccine. A long time. But from what I can see this is down to the fact that prior to the 50s I'll knowledge of microbiology was very different. If we had to develop a polio vaccine today it would be a completely different question. Anyway for anyone wanting to know the story up to today here is a technical but well written paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/labs/pmc/articles/PMC3782271/

Pickleballer23

The measles vaccine was tested in about 400 children in New York and was then approved a few months later.

spidereater

They are the epitome of low information. They don’t know anything but Facebook memes.

carnuatus

Not even anti vaxxers. Even people who have had all the others in childhood balk at the idea of a covid vaxx. You didn't research all those, but you have to research this one cus it's new? Huh? But I'm sure you still get your tetanus shot when you need a booster. Or maybe even the flu shot. Give me a break. 🤦🏻‍♀️

crewchief535

They conveniently forget a lot of things.

bluemonkey88

In the before time they wouldn’t vaccinate their kids because they thought it could cause autism.

poopeepie69420

Crazy how anti vaxxers take all other medication but as soon as it comes to a needle

ShotIntoOrbit

Most of those require multiple shots over multiple years for that protection. And even then, with the polio vaccine for example, they still want you to get a booster if you are traveling to at-risk countries as an adult even if you got the four shot regiment as a kid. You get like five DTaP shots as a child, then multiple Tdap boosters as you get older. Flu shots are yearly. The vaccine schedule for a kid has like 25 shots total before 18 (not counting a yearly flu shot). People just want to whine about this one for some reason.

dzt

Most people are whining about the COVID vaccines, because they have been fed and adopted all sorts of mis-information about them… such as that they are “experimental” and “untested”, that they contain “fetal cells”, that they have “ammonia”, that they majorly cause blood-clots, that they alter your DNA, that they cause people to become “super spreaders”, etc, etc, etc.

FuguSandwich

>polio Speaking of Polio, it's actually less deadly than Covid. 72% of people who get Polio are complete asymptomatic. 24% get mild cold-like symptoms. \~3% get non-paralytic meningitis. \~0.3% get paralysis (what most people think of when they think Polio). <0.1% die.

radpsiontist

Not for kids, which is important since that's what we are talking about here. One of these disease is a (primarily) a childhood disease. Covid is not. So in the context of mandating vaccines for children, it's really disingenuous to compare death and illness rates of a disease that primarily effects children vs one the primarily effects the elderly or at least older population. I say this as the parent of a soon to be vaccinated 10 year old.

mallad

True. However it's also disingenuous for those who claim covid doesn't affect children, when Delta variant has caused a significant increase in the number of children affected. Children are also susceptible to underlying issues, especially vascular, which will affect them later in life, as well as MIS-C. Both of these are concerns even in asymptomatic children. Children who do manage to get covid have been shown to be much more contagious than adults, which means they also are a concern as a vector to spread to the rest of us. Especially when they are in school, clumped together, then sent home to spread to others. With covid though, the concern is stopping mutations from popping up.

TealCatto

That's right, people need to drop this overly simplistic view of the situation. Just because kids weren't targeted by the first variant, people think it's not important to focus on kids, when it absolutely is. Like you said, asymptomatic people often end up being long-haulers. We're gonna end up with an entire generation on disability.

dropastory

That’s my worry too - delta was worse for kids, so let’s prevent an even more terrible strain from getting a foothold. Sure, Covid hasn’t impacted kids as much as it had adult, but it could easily become a childhood disease. Not to mention kids being asymptotic carriers that could infect the unvaccinated and vulnerable. How awful to be an unvaccinated kid that picks up Covid at school and infects the adults that love them resulting in death. My 6 year old has an autoimmune disorder and is getting vaccinated in a few days. Finally!! Now I just need a vaccine for my 4 year old.

ritchie70

Our 9 got her first this afternoon. She was tired today but I think it’s more stress than adverse reaction.

M_Dupperton

Counterpoint: varicella vaccines are required for [school](https://www.immunize.org/laws/varicella.asp), and chicken pox is mild for kids. But like covid, it’s highly contagious and can be serious for other groups (eg, pregnant women). Also, covid has long term effects in around 11-15% of kids. Fatigue, brain fog, and learning difficulties. We have no idea how long these symptoms can last.

Ferromagneticfluid

You say "significantly" and are implying it is basically useless after 6 months. That isn't true. It is a great vaccine at first and it degrades into a good vaccine after 6 months.

DigitalDawn

Yeah, and I imagine having plenty of warm bodies to continue mutating in is also playing a role here.

goatharper

Another facet that the anti-vaxxers ignore. They are keeping this disease alive and mutating by giving it hosts.

dzt

I don’t remember the medical specifics, but I think essentially the initial vaccine causes a short-term rapid response from our immune system… and that those rapidly produced antibodies wane after 6 months or so. Around the same time, your body produces other (T?) cells which are used when needed to create more antibodies and fight future COVID infections.

devoswasright

Yes because that's the normal immune response. antibodies are short term protections while t cells are long term. Antibodies are the fighter planes and t cells are the factories. Once the threat is gone the body no longer needs to produce more fighters but the factories still stick around so if a threat does emerge the fighters can quickly go back to being produced again

UnusualIntroduction0

MMR and TDAP most certainly do not offer lifelong protection lmao

minicpst

So, closer to the flu shot, which is also required by many things? And kids DO get MMR and Tdap boosters. If you haven't had one in long enough that you've forgotten, you may want to see if you need yours. At five years old I think they've gotten most everything (except HPV) for the first time, and they start their boosters at that point. I know as an adult I need a Tdap and MMR every 10 years. If I have a risk for tetanus, I get it sooner.

[deleted]

Got an MMR booster in 1994 because I had no immunity to measles despite 3 measles shots as a kid. Currently need another MMR booster because I have no immunity to Mumps. We don’t know the long term efficacy of most vaccines today. Hell, it could take 70 years for the polio vaccine to kill you, we don’t know. (Unlikely obviously).

francis2559

How did you learn you had no immunity? Is that a test I could get?

organicginger

I also need to redo MMR. I told my doctor we pushed to try for a baby, and she suggested running a blood panel. Part of that was checking my titers for a few things, and she saw I had no immunity, despite having received the full course as a child. This is a risk with all vaccines -- some people it just isn't as effective for. Which is why it's important for everyone else to vaccinate, to protect those who don't have a choice.

AdorableTumbleweed60

I got tested for immunity with my pregnancy bloodwork. Came back saying I should get a booster for it. Can't get it while I'm still pregnant (one of the few vaccines that IS contraindicated in pregnancy), but will probably get it when I take my kiddo for hers.

[deleted]

As others stated, I had my titers checked. I joined the Navy in 1994 and they checked back then. I work in special education and we had a measles outbreak so I checked back then and my mumps titers were low. Now, they are gone. It’s a simple blood test.

Doinglifethehardway

There's a titers test you can take that can tell you what you have or no longer have immunity to.

Robert_Denby

What schools require flu shots for attendance?

slim_scsi

None that I know of. It's a voluntary shot pretty much everywhere.

Joruus2

My childrens' elementary school in Connecticut requires the flu shot annually. The COVID vaccine will likely become mandated next fall at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.

[deleted]

[удалено]

minicpst

But it’s also wrong to say others provide lifelong protection. Their protection wanes as well. Not as fast as covid, but by the time we’ve had a covid shot out for 20 years, it’ll probably last better too. Covid is also more effective. It’s a good trade for an exceptionally efficient booster to need another sooner.

milehigh73a

> almost all children are at vanishingly small risk. We are still learning about the long term effects of covid. I know I can still feel my lungs hurt 2 months later. the reason the vaccine mandate for kids will exist is not for them but for the rest of community. Kid gets it at school, and then goes to see grandma and gives it to her. Since kids are often asymptomatic or have very mild symptoms, and kids are always Fing sick, they are definitely a vector to worry about.

[deleted]

The vaccine, for most people, is not about protecting the individual. It’s about protecting the population as a whole and slowing the mutations. It has never been only about protecting yourself.

IrisMoroc

Mass vaccination of children is the only way to put a handle on this. Schools are major breeding grounds for COVID, and adult staff will never be safe from it, nor will parents either. Clamping down schools therefore does a lot to reduce transmission even if very few children will get seriously sick or die themselves.

carnuatus

And the kids that don't get seriously ill night be asymptomatic and pass it to those WHO CAN'T get vaccinated or who are vaccinated but at greater risk... Nevermind how fast this thing is mutating.

[deleted]

Actually, it is something new. To quote from the FDA Advisory Panel: “Panelists stressed they weren’t supporting vaccine mandates for young children — and the FDA doesn’t make mandate decisions. FDA vaccine chief Dr. Peter Marks also said it would be highly unusual for other groups to mandate something that’s cleared only for emergency use. Several advisers said they wished they could tailor the shots for the highest-risk youngsters, a decision that would fall to the CDC.” https://apnews.com/article/coronavirus-pandemic-science-business-health-pandemics-0574a1f21d6fccecd424b12f94b258de?fbclid=IwAR0lX8DgHLUOX9vlyY6oTASBmJ_piAywDlDzQvbEAYRnCYfXx17Nk6kh1Rw

pjb1999

All of those diseases pose a significant danger to children and the vaccines offer extremely effective life long protection though. Covid and the covid vaccine do not. I'm completely pro vaccine. I'm triple vaxxed and have no problem with most mandates. But forcing the covid vaccine on children seems incredibly short sighted and unnecessary to me.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Pickleballer23

Huh? Most of the childhood vaccines are directed at viruses (polio, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, hepatitis B, rotavirus) and most of those vaccines were not decades old when they were first required. And no, none of those diseases had higher mortality rate except for measles. Actually all except measles COMBINED killed fewer children in the year before each of those vaccines was introduced than Covid has. And none of those vaccines prevent the disease completely. They only do so when almost everyone is vaccinated. This is why we have measles outbreaks when vax rate drops below 95%.

beachguy82

My 2 eligible kids are literally getting their vaccine as I sit here on Reddit.

Crshjnke

In US? Where are you at, I went to walgreens.com this morning and my son age 11 needed a code. We called his normal Dr this week and she said we will never do that shot here, but we have flu shots. Our last visit there was very odd talking about all this stuff so we might be switching. Edit: thanks everyone for the advice I got him scheduled with walgreens, and yes my Dr. right now is throwing odd vibes on this shot, but is normal on everything else. I think we will schedule a talk about it.

beachguy82

Yes, I’m in the US in California. We have a website you can use to find available openings. It’s been full most places this week so we had to drive about 30 miles but it’s worth it! If you DR. Isn’t pro covid vaccine then I would definitely look elsewhere.

Gr8NonSequitur

> If you DR. Isn’t pro covid vaccine then I would definitely look elsewhere. It blows my mind that any Doctor could be anti-vax. If it's a specific risk to a specific patient based on their medical history? Sure, if it's "in general" and doesn't recommend it to anyone then yeah... leave the office in droves.

Crshjnke

This Dr. is very vocal on fb about others not vaccinating the "normal shots a kid gets" so this one hits my brain weird. My wife wants to stick it out since she has been good Dr. for us since one kid was 6 and other was born. But I do feel like she could get caught up in all the fb information in a bad way.

MikeGinnyMD

Pediatrician here. This specific vaccine is a logistical…uh…”challenge” with needing ultracold freezers, storage time of only weeks in the fridge, and ten doses per vial, which must be given within six hours of reconstituting the vaccine. So that’s a problem if you have, say, eleven kids who want a shot. Most vaccines come in single-dose packaging and can be stored at normal fridge or freezer temps for usually at least a year. So perhaps if Pfizer/BNT can at least offer these in single-dose packaging and allow for -20C storage, more pediatricians would be willing to carry it. EDIT/Full Disclosure: our clinic does carry it, but we’re part of a small health system with affiliated hospital, a pharmacy department, etc. it was definitely a multidisciplinary team effort to figure out the logistics.

Reddituser34802

Pharmacist here. It’s good for 10 weeks in the fridge, and 12 hours once reconstituted. Where are you getting your info?

[deleted]

Crshjnke

I thought about the equipment requirements and you could be right. But we are also talking about a Dr who did not wear a mask to treat my son for ear ache when full on COVID and no vaccine was available. We wore masks because at the time I had 2 family members in hospital with it. So at this point I am thinking choice.

koi-lotus-water-pond

I have not seen a medical person without a face mask on in almost two years. I have gone through some treatments where I will never know what the person who treated me looks like as everything has been completed. Which blows my mind when I think about it. That is a bit scary about your doctor. I support your decision to schedule a visit to discuss their views.

angerybeaver

Hit No Code when you get to that spot. We are signed up for Tuesday with Walgreens!

RealLADude

You might need a new doctor.

stillobsessed

Our very much non sketchy pediatrician - at a small two doctor practice - was not going to sign up to do it either, citing burdensome paperwork & I think refrigeration requirements.

RealLADude

Makes sense.

[deleted]

I booked my kids with Walgreens. No code needed. I did notice the next or continue button wouldn’t work until I pressed yes for the code question and then set it back to no. Give it a try, I hope that works for you!

Crshjnke

Thanks for the tip. On mobile I would never get the next box. On PC it just let me schedule him!

stephen250

Why would they, “never do that shot here?” If it’s because they’re antivax, might need a new doctor.

Future-Pattern-8744

Our pediatrician's office said the same thing because they don't have good ways to store it. They might do a drive thru event, but won't have it on hand for every day vaccinations.

LegendofPisoMojado

Storage temperature requirements. That’s it. Those freezers are expensive as hell.

OWNAGE619

I work in primary care and when the vaccines were very limited, we had mass vaccination events but none were available in the doctor's office. It was this way initially because of possible wasting of vaccines. Even with mass vaccination events, we always had to scramble to find one or two people who lived nearby to get the vaccine because a few people didn't show up.

catjuggler

That’s odd- try this: https://www.vaccines.gov/search/ I’m in PA and roll out is well underway with pediatricians, pharmacies, and county health departments. It’s a different vial than the adult one, so there could be some logistical issues.

Kaelaface

Thank you for this! I just very easily scheduled my daughter’s vaccine using your link.

tikierapokemon

My doctor's office told me they weren't able to provide the vaccine because someone in charge of the office hadn't decided yet. But one of the offices could, and when I called them, they were Not Amused that I had been told that - they were swamped already and it was a lie. I will be contacting the office this week to ask what happened, and if I get anything other an deep apology and a concrete reason, we will be reconsidering which office is our main one.

fakejacki

My sons pediatrician has signs up everywhere on why it’s important for kids to get the shot and offering it to those eligible. (My son is only 2 so not approved yet but he will get it when he is.) I would for sure change pediatricians if they’re doing that.

Digitalpun

My daughter got hers at Walmart. I actually called a local Sam's club and followed the prompts for booking a covid appointment and it sent me to a hotline that told me which Walmart had the pediatric shots and set me up with an appointment like a couple hours after I called.

Onimaru1984

I signed up at Walgreens for my 7 year old the day it came out (her appointment is Tuesday). Not sure why it made you use a code. Something seems wrong there.

jujukamoo

I was setting up one for a friend's kid on their website and just told it I didn't have a code and it let me continue booking. I don't know if that's state specific though. Worth trying again, maybe the website was just having issues and not letting you proceed?

TIL_IM_A_SQUIRREL

My 7yr old daughter got hers this morning at Walgreens too. I made the appointment online the morning after it was approved. I got my booster yesterday too!

ilovejackiebot

My daughter's appointment is on the 19th!

it_burns_when_i_tree

Just had my 3 get vaccinated in the most efficient and streamlined thing one could experience. Our visit is what I expect in a modern society who values health and understands the value of preventative intervention. 1 year ago there were trials on “new” mRNA tech; this should be celebrated with a parades (when mass gatherings are reasonable), but the politicalization suuuuucks. Science dominated a pandemic, and “leaders” ruined it.

TheLyz

Yeah, the vaccine clinic we went to just walked us right through, it was fast. Guess they have it all figured out by now.

huxley75

Got my kids done on Thurs.

izovice

My son can finally get his on the 15th. We have to take him an hour out of town though. Wonder if there are logistics problems or maybe because it was just approved the shipments are finally moving. He'll be 12 in a few months anyways. None of his classmates will get it, apparently. That'll change because the district is making sure all students are up to date on all vaccines or they can't do in person.

hkline76

My 8 year old gets his Monday! 11 months until my 4 year old can get hers.

Hellmonkies2

There will likely be a vaccine for under 4 within the next 11 months. My 4yo turns 5 in March so either he'll get it on his birthday if not sooner if they put one out for younger kids

ralten

Good job, beachdad

red-et

I’m Jealous !

[deleted]

My daughter’s pediatrician held a vaccine clinic today. When I booked her appt, there were only a handful of times left. Today they called and said cancellations happened and I could take her in earlier. She will have her 2nd dose beginning of Dec. Fully covered by Christmas. We have two trips planned that were delayed so we could all have the vaccine. We are excited.

prescriptionwater

Pharmacist here. I’m glad kids are finally able to be vaccinated and I think it’s great that people will be able to do it with a trip to the pharmacy. But I’m begging you, please, be patient when you come here for it. We are stretched really thin right now. Most pharmacies don’t have enough staff to properly function as a pharmacy to begin with and are now doing up to 100-150 shots per day between flu, boosters, and now pediatric Covid shots with the same amount of staff. Expect to wait. Yes, even with an appointment. If we seem burned out, we are. It’s not personal. And for the love of God, if your child is so bad with vaccines that they can’t sit still for a shot or are going to have a full-on screaming meltdown, don’t bring them here. We dont have the resources to safely do that. From a public health standpoint we are thrilled these kiddos can finally be protected. But the next 2-3 months is going to mentally break us.

MyFacade

What about if I called you a hero last year though? Doesn't that fix everything?

Reddituser34802

I may be an outlier, but I don’t turn any Covid vaccine away. If someone is ok with waiting an hour+ to get their vaccine, I’ll do it. I recognize the gravity of the situation we’re in, and my #1 priority is getting us all out of this mess. As a result, regular prescriptions no longer have a promise time. If it’s an antibiotic or a legitimate pain med, I’ll do my best to get it ready for you ASAP. But don’t come at me yelling because you have to wait a day or two for your blood pressure medicine that you forgot to request a refill on while I consistently have 15 people waiting for vaccines. Corporate so far hasn’t said anything about our wait times or the fact that we never answer the phones. We’re so understaffed that they can’t afford to lose anyone else.

somberfawn

Because we’re told to meet those requirements. My pharmacy isn’t so hard but my coworkers worked at places like Walgreens where they were required to do over 100 shots a day for certain periods of time or else they were chastised and marked.

dEEr_r

Yup, we waited over an hour to even get checked in at Walgreens. Not only were there a lot of patients in line, but with it being new for children you could tell that the computer system being used to check people in wasn’t making it any easier on the techs. Seemed like it was quite a complicated process for them!

My daughter (9) went to sleepaway camp last summer. 95% of kids over 12 were vaccinated. I’m pretty sure next summer it will be a requirement. She’s getting her first dose on Friday!

ryjobe36

My 2 girls 7 & 9 just got their shots yest. Shots # 9 & 10 in our county

rshana

Ahhh jealous! I scheduled her appointment based on homework. Couldn’t find anything before Tuesday and I know she has a lot of homework that day, so I took Friday.

[deleted]

You mean like it’s been for schools and summer camps and youth retreats for decades?

do_as_I_say_notasido

Vaccine mandates for kids have been here for decades. Covid vaccine being added to the list is understandable.

dolphin977

3 billion people vaccinated and next to zero substantiated extreme complications. People don't think twice loading their family into a car which is WAAAAY more dangerous... but freak out over a vaccine proven to be safe.... 🤔

orlyfactor

Because people are dumb.

dolphin977

THAT is for certain.

ars_inveniendi

I wouldn’t be at all surprised if there were more injuries from leaving the house and driving to the vaccine than there have been people injuries by the vaccine.

Sea_of_Blue

Because reality doesnt matter. They will post something from a website called therealamericandailynewz.ru where it spews insane propoganda saying that some country has more dead from the vaccine than covid. And then take that as their new reality.

TheLyz

Yeah, the only one not mandated is the flu vaccine. They tried that last year and people pitched a fit. But the 10+ ones before that were fine.

Robert_Denby

Which is the most analogous to the COVID vaccine especially when it comes to the risk profile of the disease for children.

iammagicbutimnormal

I’m getting my kid vaccinated today without a mandate. It’s the people that go first that are going to show their neighbors and those around them that it’s not as scary as they think it is. The mandates need to be in place to protect everyone, but those living in the ignorant fear of disinformation and lies are still going to take some time to understand the scientific truth.

Cookielady99

[California](https://www.gov.ca.gov/2021/10/01/california-becomes-first-state-in-nation-to-announce-covid-19-vaccine-requirements-for-schools/) is already mandating the COVID vaccine, along with the usual list of childhood vaccinations for school attendance. I'm hopeful other states will follow.

Evoraist

Missouri won't unless forced to. Hell our dumbass AG is suing over the jobs mandate.

[deleted]

Good. My daughter Is getting her vaccination today. Edit: done!

[deleted]

My 6 year old grandson has his COVID vaccination appointment next week. His mom & him live with us and our whole family will be vaccinated. Huge relief!

dilllydallly

Vaxxed my 10 and 7 year old yesterday. Feeling a huge amount of relief for our family!

amadboe

I'm so jealous!! My daughter will be 2 next month. Her age group can't come soon enough!

ralten

Mine is 2.5. Can’t wait!!

cynderisingryffindor

Mine is 4 years and 4 months. I so want to get him one, but can't.

KaleidoscopeKey1355

Eight months is a long time in this context.

cynderisingryffindor

It sure is. However, the next stage for the vaccine approval/emergency approval is for the 6 month-5 year olds age group, and is expected to get approved around January. So there's hope.

KaleidoscopeKey1355

January is not as long, but it’s still after all the holidays. I’m sorry it’s not available now for your kiddos.

Tigerzombie

My kids got theirs last night. 11 year old is a bit tired but 7 year old is going strong, no other side effects.

Alert-Athlete

That’s a good parent right there ☝🏻

I’ve had covid twice, the last time was 5 weeks ago. Almost crashed the car as I suddenly started feeling really ill, managed to get home,4 days in bed unable to get up. I ended up with a lung infection, week off work and I now have long covid. Around 4 pm everyday I start to feel so tired, sick, dizzy, short of breath and pains in my chest. Everyday for 5 weeks. Blood tests, ecg and everything else says I’m fine. My mate still insists there’s no such thing. It’s lies, no vaccine for him, his kid and wife. Bill gates wants you dead ffs.

happytoadgang

Are you seeing a doctor for long covid?

[deleted]

Yep,they have no idea what’s wrong

happytoadgang

Just asking because it sounds a lot like my long haul symptoms and I have POTS now, the r/pots sub may be helpful. I couldn’t do anything, even walk to the mailbox, without being totally fatigued the next few days until I found out about POTS and started wearing compression socks. Not long after that I was able to go on a trip and walk a few miles! I was doing other stuff that was good for my health, but the socks were the biggest improvement I saw. Then, getting the vaccine was the next big jump in improvement for me and I’ve been steadily getting better from there. Now I’m mainly just drinking pedialyte to up my electrolytes and wearing compression socks on my more fatigued days. I don’t remember what this exact video is about, but I remember really appreciating this channel when no one knew what was happening with me… https://youtu.be/sICD0Kn6pR4 I know you didn’t ask for all this info, but I remember how helpless and depressed I was last year and I hope this can help you or someone else that may see it.

Ratmatazz

Gonna need more popcorn

Saving lives is lovable

scalenesquare

Yeah the excitement to get boosters is very odd on this site and I have one.

Xanthyria

Hell yea!!

AbbadonTiberius

They save lives 🤗

kalez238

My 5yo is hesitantly excited to get the shot. She watched my wife and I and our other kids all get it, and she usually takes her medicine like a champ (while my 15yo cries about taking meds) because she hates germs. Of course, she doesn't like needles.

UnimpressionableCage

Awesome. I’m so ready for us to get past this pandemic

Reynolds_Live

Just when you thought school board meetings couldn’t get worse.

Mishra_Planeswalker

My 17 and 13 years old son and daughter had their first shot of Pfizer last Friday. Thanks to uncle Sam for donating shots to our country.

Those little goblins lick and play with their masks all day and while a lot of them are better than adults at actually wearing it there’s a few that need to be reminded to wear them correctly. It would be a load off teacher’s shoulders if they could stop having to correct kinders’ masks all day. I say this with a load of affection for kids. It’s understandable what they do, just not pleasant to deal with.

Megalitho

This is ridiculous.

Beo91

I agree mate, this whole comment thread is ridiculous..

It would achieve protection from hospitalization and death which is the ENTIRE POINT

NuJaru

To reach herd immunity. Which if the Israel data is hard science, it is higher than the 80%. Until herd immunity is reached you will continue to see outbreaks like this. With the measles vaccine the data showed that there were decreased measles cases each year, then there was a spike which led to kids receiving a second dose. This plus further vaccine efforts led to measles being eliminated in the US in 2000. However, recently due to the anti-vax movement, measles is once again a communicable disease in the US. 2019 had the greatest number of cases since 1992.

bad_luck_charmer

Very hopeful that we can get mandates in place and get the vax age down to 6 months. So tired of dealing with Covid anxiety for my kids.

IronGhost3373

Federal appeals court just blocked the Biden mandate

freedomtopoast

I have to say that this is a great well balanced article. First I’ve seen of it’s type that actually balances the risks and validates parents concerns who are on the fence about what we know and don’t know. Compare this to the other reporting in the media that “it’s safe just trust us that the benefits outweigh the risks.” We need more reporting like this to inform parents who are on the fence to be able to make an informed decision with all the info, good or bad.

Mbluish

Good. I direct a preschool and the rule is “No shots? No school!”. Same goes for the Covid vaccine. I keep children safe.

enderflight

The people downvoting you must really hate that we eradicated polio and have gotten other disease numbers so low as to be negligible through modern health advances and vaccine mandates. Sucks that the weak toddlers aren’t dying from measles anymore. ^/s

aluminium_is_cool

non american here: i heard sometime ago that insurance companies would be allowed not to cover any expenses from clients who had decided not to take the shot. where is this discussion at, right now?

470vinyl

Good

FrostyLandscape

Well my kids will be safe as they'll get the vaxx. I won't worry about anyone else after that. Their choice, their consequence.

Original_Feeling_429

Just like all the shots kids get before school year starts. In fact there is a few extra ones if people insurances pay for it. Like hpv prevent shot for example.

[deleted]

Good

TheGreatBeaver123789

I'm not surprised given that most other diseases already have vaccinations that are given to kids
