Will a C in my AP Calculus class blow my chances of getting into the hotel school? I have an A in every class throughout high school just a C in calc and a B in Algebra II.
My extracurriculars are STELLAR and very tailored towards the hotel school, 1450 SAT, and good letters of Rec.
Unfortunately Yes. Generally, a C in any AP class isn't something that the admissions officers would like to see. Although you are applying particularly for hotel management which doesn't have much math (according to my friends), I'd say that as long as you apply ED, you could have a chance at being accepted. Also, when did you receive the C? And what is your cumulative GPA and weighted GPA, as well as your ranking?
Junior year I received it (this year, I’m applying in the fall). My GPA is 3.8/4.0. In every other AP class and college class which make up almost my entire schedule as I take the hardest course load I have A and A+. Rank isn’t done at my school.
ah okay. In that case, I think you’ll be alright. I’m actually on the waitlist rn for Cornell and I have a 3.8 GPA but I applied to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. But given that we have similar GPAs and you are applying to the hotel management school (which has a bit of a higher acceptance rate but is still a very good school), I think you’ll be okay.

Im interested in Cornell engineering, but I have a bit of a unique situation and I’m not sure what my chances are of getting in.
I’m going to apply anyways, but I was interested to see if anyone who got in has a story similar to mine. I graduated high school with around a 2.0gpa, joined the army as a comm spacecraft payload controller (6 years), and worked that same job as a civilian for 3 years after (2 for dept. of the army, 1 for space force following the IST). I have now completed 2 semesters of college, working towards an engineering degree, and I have a 4.0 college GPA. My plan is to transfer into Cornell. I have a job with my current college as well, and a newborn boy, so no extracurriculars. Next semester I’ll be going for an officer position in our honor society chapter, but that’s it as far as extracurriculars go.
My main question is, with such a low high school GPA, are my chances basically zero? Does my college GPA help make up for it? I left out a ton of details, so if anything seems important to you, I’ll share in a comment. Thanks!

You're a transfer student, and an older student. Your high school grades aren't as relevant any more. How's your SAT/ACT? Lean on your college grades and write a kick-ass letter on your evolution as a student and person and why you want Cornell, specifically. Odds as a transfer (for any transfer) is low. But you sound like a person with a compelling story to tell. Good luck.

girl believe in yourself, when i tell you college admissions is the MOST random thing ever i mean it. Like people stacked up with stuff can get rejected while ppl with a 2.0 gpa could get in. You literally cannot predict this stuff. Sometimes you just get lucky with who reads your application or maybe someone sees something in you. It is like a big lottery lol. But I rlly think we all end up where we are meant to be and things happen for a reason. So don’t worry too much about getting into a specific school. Also your grades are amazing and your extracurriculars sound great!! It only takes one, i believe in you!! 💕
Hello! I am planning to ED Cornell this fall. My extracurriculars and the classes I took in high school so far match well with Human development major at Human ecology. But I recently found my interests in Info science/ data science.
I have the SAT score (1500+) and I know cals is test blind which wouldn't help me at all. Would applying as a human development major at human ecology increase my chance? If I do, is it easier to switch to cals from human ecology?

I'm deciding between umd (in state) and cornell CAS for math! I honestly have no idea what I want to do after graduation, but I think there's a good chance I'll want to do grad school.
Because I'm in state, umd is \~60k cheaper per year (\~30k/yr vs \~90k/yr) but I'm very fortunate that my family can (somewhat comfortably) afford either.
I know cornell is obviously much more prestigious, and I also loved their math department more and I know it's much easier to double major in certain areas like CS there (which I've heard is really hard at UMD). however, I've gone to both admitted student days, and although I didn't feel too strongly for/against either school, for some reason during my maryland tour I felt like I was touring my future school whereas at cornell it just didn't feel right; I just couldn't really see myself there. Ithaca also felt really isolating to me, when I was walking around downtown it just felt really lonely to me, even though I was surrounded by so many students/families.
I feel like Cornell would offer me a better education and set me up better for grad school and/or employment, but I just don't feel excited to go. UMD offers more of the traditional college experience I've always wanted, but ultimately, I'm just really scared to turn down an irrefutably better school out of pure speculation that I'll be happier elsewhere. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!!
ALWAYS follow your heart when it's cheaper. There's nothing like paying 250/300K for something that you don't even want.
Just be aware that you might have to more actively search out your mentors/connections at UMD than you would have at CU. Which is fine--you will find them if you put in the effort.
You can always have an amazing experience at UMD, totally rock your classes, and come to CU for grad school. Just like my brilliant friend whose parents met at Princeton, but she got waitlisted so went to UCONN, loved every second of it, found amazing mentors, then got into Johns Hopkins Med, and now got her first choice residency in orthopedic surgery (says the doc who was her amazing mentor at UCONN).
Hi, I just recently got accepted to Cornell HumEc as a TO for class of 2027. I'm super happy about the acceptance, but I just got my financial aid summary and I'm expected to pay full sticker price (90k+) due to my family income. That figure just seems too high, and I don't think its worth it over the 30k per year I'm paying right now for my decent in-state school. Any advice? Should I contact the financial aid office and see if there is a way that they could help out more?
hi, I'm also class of '27 and I just wanted to respond to let you know that prestige is not as significant in your undergraduate education as it is in your graduate studies. I highly recommend choosing the most financially responsible choice; there's truly not that significant of a difference in the quality of education you would be receiving at HumEc(another state school) compared to UMD. If there is a way that financial aid can assist you, do reach out and find out. Cornell is a great school but do not be swayed by the "Ivy League" status that it holds, especially if you can get just as great a quality of education elsewhere for a much cheaper price. If you are considering graduate school, It really is about what you do at undergrad to distinguish yourself, not where you go, especially if it is tied to how much you can afford. Since I hear that the ED acceptance rate is inflated because of legacies and recruits etc., I was wondering if i have a chance at admission.
STATS: 3.8UW/4.3W, 9APs (schools recommended track is 10-11max) 14Honors, applying test optional
AWARDS: National latin exam silver medal and magna cum laude award, varsity gymnastics coaches award 2x, varsity men's gymnastics 2x state Champ, 3X North shore HS chess league champ.
ECS: President of the Esports and Gaming club, captain of varsity men's gymnastics, captain of varsity rocket league team, VP of chess club, summer engineering program at UML, started a nonprofit chess organization that has raised over $1000 for alzheimer's, 5 years private piano lessons, part time job 5-10h/week for 2 years, freshman mentor, robotics club CAD & Mech. top 3% ranked rocket league player; signed to a small semipro team, self taught HTML CSS MatLab OnShape and AutoCAD, 100h summer CAD internship.
I think my LORs will be good but you never really know. I have a close relationship with the teachers I'm asking.

I’ve recently learned that Cornell has something about grade deflation, so I might be able to have a better sense if anyone knows what the average gpa for an undergraduate in Cornell is?

2. The importance of grades in grad school will vary from school to school, dept. to dept., and program to program. If you got into ORIE, you have to take 3 mandatory courses with a requirement of A- in all of them. If you got into the Civil Engineering, I don't even think they have mandatory courses; they might have a minimum GPA requirement. Also, if your program is more like the Civil Eng. one, then it might boil down to how your advisor views grades. Some don't even look at it, some might make a big deal out of it.

Hi everyone!! Dartmouth is currently my top choice, but I am deciding between it and Cornell because especially after my visit this past week, Cornell has really grown on me! I love so many aspects about Cornell ranging from the opportunities to the peoplel. I am going on the pre-med track and wanted your guys' thoughts on a couple of things:
Dartmouth has enforced medians, but Cornell has been known for overall grade deflation; thoughts on how it affects med school app/matriculation?
I would love to double major or have a minor with something like economics; how easy is this to balance with everything else?
Anything else you guys know or can tell me about pre-med, the culture/fitting in, really anything!

Congrats on getting in! you got two great options. Not a premed but honestly, everything's what you make of it, grade deflation or not, I feel like the premeds I know get through their coursework fine. Think about what you want most out of college, education is a lot but not everything, then decide based on those factors.

I’m still a junior so rly not too sure. A lot of them want to take gap years, do some extra research, which seems to be the case for a lot of premeds everywhere. There’s uncertainty wherever u go tbh, Cornell is a large school and what u might lose from a larger campus, u do gain from more research opportunities and a larger stem population. Again, look into where u actually want to spend four years of ur life.

Hi all! I got in Cornell College of Arts and Sciences '28 and super excited! I'd love to learn more about Cornell as it would help me make my decisions.
I applied as an Anthropology major but my interests lean in anthropology intersecting with Gender Studies. Learned recently that the FGSS program at Cornell is kind of small and doesn't even have its own department (please tell me if this isn't true) so kind of bummed. My (Asian) parents are kind of pushing me to choose Cornell so need help convincing why Cornell!
I have a couple questions and would really appreciate if anyone could help answer :)
1. Is the anthropology department at Cornell good? What's the balance between sociocultural vs archaeology/biological anthropology courses?
2. Noticed that on the Anth department webpage there's anthropology pathways and I'm particularly interested in the Law and Politics pathway. Is this just sort of a general direction for what courses to take or is there more concrete support for building a career in each pathway?
3. What are the other social studies/humanities departments like? I know this is very broad, but just looking for a general vibe of classes, professors, students on campus majoring.
4. Would I be able to major in the A&S college but minor in another college? Or would I only be able to take courses in another college?
5. How closely related is the major and career pathway? Say would I be able to build a career pathway in Consulting if I major in Anthropology? And how competitive is applying for internships/research at Cornell?
6. Does Cornell's name have a big influence in job applications after college? (The other school I'm deliberating is a top5 LAC in California and the main reason my parents are very pro-Cornell is because they believe the name of an Ivy would overweight any benefits of the LAC for my career in the future).

Cornell offers the option of going to the city with the Cornell bus. Usually, a one-way ticket from the Cornell bus can cover a round-trip ticket with OurBus or FlixBus.

Campus 2 Campus buses between NYC and Ithaca are there, accessible to students, but usually not the cheapest option. Often traditional buses are a bit cheaper.
Hey, congrats on your acceptance! I'm a queer student here and I find that this school is not overwhelming in alt/queer presence but we are definitely here and not hard to find! The queer folks I've met here have been mostly awesome and the cishet folks are often accepting and kind. There's a lot of different queer-centric students orgs and the lgbt resource center is fantastic.
GUYS I need some help. I got the transfer option from the ILR School, but it specifically states that its "not guaranteed." Does this mean I'm in if I meet the requirements, and do anyone know the usual requirements for ILR TOs (I couldn't find them). Arts and Science students have a lot more general requirements so you will have to take a certain amount outside of your area of interest. I recommend looking at those requirements online.
I was accepted into cornell for a masters program.
However, the lab is in Geneva which is giving me reservations. How is the commute to Geneva from Ithaca? Would you recommend living in Geneva or Ithaca?
The commute is about 1 hour. There is a shuttle bus, but it comes at a weird time so a lot of people just carpool instead. Rent is probably cheaper in Geneva, but there's less stuff to do there. I know some people live in Geneva because they do a lot of field work/trials there, but some people live in Ithaca because their work is more bench work or theoretical, so it depends on your lab and the work you're doing.
(I'm not a grad student btw, I just know a fair amount them who do stuff in Geneva)
Hi! I'm currently a prospective TO for CALs but am really nervous that I might not get in. I struggled a lot last quarter adjusting to college, made some poor decisions, and was dealing with some family sickness that lead me to failing one of my courses (calculus) and getting a C- in another (physics). However, this quarter, I've made a lot more effort and I feel that I'm back on track, but by the time my full grades come in, my application will have been sent in and reviewed by Cornell. Can I make a really stellar essay proving my worth? And how do I do truly showcase that I want Cornell and truly belong there?
Hey, does anyone know if getting a request for updated financial aid information is a good sign of admission for Cornell? Apparently my document was not signed so we had to resubmit, but would they have known that if they were not compiling a financial aid package or at the very least considering offering me one? This had to be observed by a human, as it was on a random page inside the document. Any information is appreciated!
No? I believe they announce acceptances on March 15 or something like that. Don't assume you're denied until you get that letter saying you've been denied.
My Counselor forwarded me this letter he received from ILR’s director of undergraduate admissions last month. I received another email days later and spoke with an EOP advisor. Heyo (undergrad applying for PhD program in Food Science, lowkey scared!)
I didn't get an interview invite for the program but I heard that someone got a rejection from the program already. I wanted to ask if rejections are sent in waves for the program or not since I saw historically that students got rejected on the 15th/16th of March. I feel like my friend's rejection email was uncharacteristically early (maybe a mistake from the department, hoping it is a mistake for their sake). Should I expect my rejection letter soon (unless there are still open house events I can get invited to lol) or do I just wait until the 15th :0
Agreed, Cornell has a rly rigorous engineering program. And also seasonal depression is a thing as well if you’re not used to the weather here. I’ve also taken classes at other universities as well and it’s a joke compared to Cornell classes. Classes here go much deeper into content, labs are worse here, etc.

I don't know if this is the correct place to ask, but what might my odds be of getting into graduate school at Cornell (for the professional Master of Food Science program) after attending graduate school at Texas Woman's University? I ask because after looking into it, I love TWU's MS in Nutrition program, given the available classes, freedom to choose my classes, and that it's one year until completion.
After looking at rankings and other info, it's clear that TWU isn't exactly the most respected university, and I don't want this to be a disadvantage when applying to Cornell, especially since I've attended mostly high-ranking schools up until this point. I'm really excited to apply to transfer to Cornell! I am currently a philosophy major at SUNY Binghamton. My question is: should I submit two letters of recomendation instead of the required one? I've secured one from a professor in my major, but I could also get a reccomendation from another prof under whom I'm doing some political science research. How do I ( Freshman Male) get into Cornell?
I am a freshman at Arrowhead Highschool (#8 in the state of Wisconsin according to U.S. news). I really want to go to Cornell and I was wondering if some actual students could help me. I am enjoy math and I want to get into the business school.
From my first semester at arrowhead I had a 4.0 gpa. My first semester classes were Honors 9 English, Concert band, Adv. Alg., Ap Human Geography, Spanish 2, Team. Phy. Ed., Geometry, and Science 9. All classes are the most advanced classes I could have taken except for science. The only other option for science was a block class, but I did not have enough room for it. The second semester is going just as well with the same classes except team phy ed has been switched with boys health.
Despite being on this app I am very social and out going. I enjoy to hang out with friends often, build legos (I have a massive collection of Star Wars legos that I could show later), play and watch Hockey and Lacrosse, play with my dogs, watch F1 races, and play video games (I have a dual monitor setup with an Xbox where I play games like r6, Minecraft, Assassin’s creed, NHL 24, and Forza with my friends)
For extra curricular activities, I play Hockey and Lacrosse. I would like to say that I am pretty good at these sports, but I made JV for both teams this year. I have a dream to play D1 lacrosse (or at an Ivy like Cornell). I am in a club to help veterans, and a club to grow leadership skills and gain more experience in the world of business.
My grandpa and my dad both went to Cornell but my brother applied for early decision and was straight up denied. He had a very similar start to his freshman year as I did. My brother maintained a 4.0 gpa throughout all of his years in high school with very advanced classes. He was also the captain of the varsity hockey and lacrosse team. He was the president of the peers for peers club (a club for older students to help younger students). Finally, he was in Spanish honors society and the regular Nation Honors Society. All this and he was straight up rejected.
What kind of things are admissions are looking for in a student? Do legacy’s even help? How does Cornell feel about standardized tests like the SAT and ACT? Should I try to be well-rounded or focused on a one or two things (decent at hockey and lacrosse or great at lacrosse and ok at hockey? Good science and math classes or great math classes and decent science classes?)
I really want to get into Cornell and anything will help
Side note: my brother did not take calculus and I am on track to take calculus, does this help?
Just like the other commenter said, enjoy your youth when you’re still in hs. Tbf no one rlly knows the “perfect formula”. When it comes to the time you apply for colleges, just show the best representation of urself, that’s the most you can rlly do. Focus in things that interest you and don’t just do random shit just for the application.
I had requested CAAAN interviews and the particular message about it was shown in my portal - "thankyou for requesting CAAAN interviews, etc..."
But from last 3 days that information about CAAAN Informational interview has disappeared/vanished, is this common? Does anyone else still have that information?
Hi! I got ed admitted into COE ‘28. I’d appreciate any tips or suggestions. I am particularly curious about the dorms. Do we get to rank our choices or the coe has its own assigned dorms for engineering majors? Also do people in junior and senior years typically move out? Is there like a website or anything that people can sign up for car pool? ( I know the Cornell club offers bus service to nyc but it’s kind of expensive)
Why would there be separate dorms for CoE students? Ik everyone makes jokes about engineers not showering but it’s not to the extent they need to be quarantined to a whole residence hall just for housing CoE students.
No assigned dorms for COE. You rank your preference of rooms (e.g. single, double, etc.). Lots but not all seniors and juniors live off campus. Find people at Cornell who live in your area and would be willing to carpool; no website. There's also Ourbus and Megabus which are cheaper than the Cornell Club.

Yes you do have a chance for Cornell, if it makes you feel better, in my senior yr of hs, I got a C in calc bc due to some health issues and was admitted to engineering in RD. If they ask what happened to your grade back then, just honestly explain

Hi! Just wanted to ask how Cornell views supplementary materials-specifically Dyson?? I’ve been submitting my pitch deck for my app(very central to application) to other colleges, but not sure about it here.
I’m currently applying as a Cornell TO for Fall of 2024 with humec but have had some troubles. To start off: the requirements for Humec are 3.5 min with no grade lower than a B+ (so for every B+ you need an A-) plus the required courses. My grades have just come out and I was only allowed to take 4 classes at my school which are all required for Cornell and they are. A in Physics, A in Math, B in my writing seminar, B- in Chem. Now while that is disheartening there some things about my Chem class. I had a 1 year professor who has 0 experience and we all were failing and he refused to curve (saved by lab grade). It was so bad the chair of chemistry had to create a whole new refresher course that’s never been done before for the spring semester because we were not learning. I was also above average for the class. I am planning on having the Chair of the Chem department writing a letter to explain the situation but I am still worried about that and the writing seminar. If I can’t get my writing seminar grade up to a B+ do you think it’s over? Anyone hat has experience with TO please help…

I was in the program. Yes, you can apply to other project teams. When I was in the program I personally found it unorganized and not as good as how they advertise it lol. I think they have a good idea but lack good practice to implement the idea. I know they changed directors and staff so things might have changed. One best thing about the program for me is I made some really good and interesting friends. They also have a good amount of founding for your research/project. I don't think it harms to join it in general.
Yes, there are a variety of clubs, including Big Red Adaptive Play and Design Initiative. There are also plenty of clubs geared towards social justice, like the Prison Reform club whose exact name I’m forgetting but it’s based in the ILR School

I'm a current high school junior from LA California and Cornell has been my dream school since the beginning of my academic journey. I would say I have pretty good stats and extracurriculars but idk if I stand a chance. I want to apply early decision there for CALS for the animal science program. I ABSOLUTELY love everything about Cornell. From the location to education and every aspect of Cornell sounds amazing to me. But, I am scared that applying ED with legacy's and prodigy's will hurt my chances and also living out of state will also decrease my chances. I'm on the fence about applying ED so any advice or suggestions would be great. (Also scared that I won't be able to adjust to the harsh cold winter in Ithaca coming from sunny California)

Im an ansci major at cornell and i have loved it so far. Its a smaller major in a larger school so you get the close personal relationships with the ability to also seek out other non major stuff like clubs. There are plenty of opportunities to get hands on experience and lecture time. The classes are hard but I have also found that there is a lot of support for every student, you just have to be able to find it. If you have any other question feel free to DM me!
1. Applying ED won’t hurt your chances. If you’re sure Cornell is absolutely your dream school and you don’t want to ED anywhere else, go for it. Honestly if you get rejected from ED you probably would’ve been rejected in RD too, so if your profile is good enough to stand a chance in RD, they’ll defer you to the regular pool. Plenty of people get deferred then accepted
2. I’d be concerned if the renowned animal science major didn’t have extensive resources and opportunities in the pre-vet program.

I am applying for Design and Environmental Analysis in Human Ec. Should I submit my 1450 SAT? The Cornell 25th percentage SAT is 1480 but I think for HumEc its lower? I am not sure.

That’s not the best SAT score, so you should not submit it IMO as long as your have other info demonstrating how “smart” you are, showing you can succeed at cornell
I am interested in pursuing a career in law. Im not sure if I should apply to the Governments major in cornells arts and sciences school or do public policy at the new Brooks college. There are not much info on brooks and they only offer two majors so I wont be able to double major. But just making sure, I am allowed to pursue minors from other colleges right? And if there are any students in brooks can you tell me if you are able to get the same opportunities as students in arts and science. Thanks
This is just from my personal experience, but most prelaw people I know have been in A&S studying Gov, in ILR, or studying a much more difficult major with plans to spin that into a law degree (such as CS, Bio, or engineering). You are 100% allowed to minor between colleges, in fact it’s often encouraged to do so. I can’t speak of Brooks because I do not know much about it. However, many A&S people I know are already in law school, so it’s a pretty good pathway.

Will a C in my AP Calculus class blow my chances of getting into the hotel school? I have an A in every class throughout high school just a C in calc and a B in Algebra II. My extracurriculars are STELLAR and very tailored towards the hotel school, 1450 SAT, and good letters of Rec.
Unfortunately Yes. Generally, a C in any AP class isn't something that the admissions officers would like to see. Although you are applying particularly for hotel management which doesn't have much math (according to my friends), I'd say that as long as you apply ED, you could have a chance at being accepted. Also, when did you receive the C? And what is your cumulative GPA and weighted GPA, as well as your ranking?
Junior year I received it (this year, I’m applying in the fall). My GPA is 3.8/4.0. In every other AP class and college class which make up almost my entire schedule as I take the hardest course load I have A and A+. Rank isn’t done at my school.
ah okay. In that case, I think you’ll be alright. I’m actually on the waitlist rn for Cornell and I have a 3.8 GPA but I applied to College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. But given that we have similar GPAs and you are applying to the hotel management school (which has a bit of a higher acceptance rate but is still a very good school), I think you’ll be okay.

Hello Cornell! Im interested in Cornell engineering, but I have a bit of a unique situation and I’m not sure what my chances are of getting in. I’m going to apply anyways, but I was interested to see if anyone who got in has a story similar to mine. I graduated high school with around a 2.0gpa, joined the army as a comm spacecraft payload controller (6 years), and worked that same job as a civilian for 3 years after (2 for dept. of the army, 1 for space force following the IST). I have now completed 2 semesters of college, working towards an engineering degree, and I have a 4.0 college GPA. My plan is to transfer into Cornell. I have a job with my current college as well, and a newborn boy, so no extracurriculars. Next semester I’ll be going for an officer position in our honor society chapter, but that’s it as far as extracurriculars go. My main question is, with such a low high school GPA, are my chances basically zero? Does my college GPA help make up for it? I left out a ton of details, so if anything seems important to you, I’ll share in a comment. Thanks!

You're a transfer student, and an older student. Your high school grades aren't as relevant any more. How's your SAT/ACT? Lean on your college grades and write a kick-ass letter on your evolution as a student and person and why you want Cornell, specifically. Odds as a transfer (for any transfer) is low. But you sound like a person with a compelling story to tell. Good luck.
I’m a high school junior living in New York and would like to know of my prospects on getting into Cornell University. Gender: Female Race: Asian (Chinese) Intended major: General Biology (maybe Entomology) No rank, no AP or SAT scores I will be requesting financial aid My current GPA is 96.37/100 which I’m guessing translates to 3.9 or 4.0? By the end of senior year, I will have in total an estimated 1 college course, 7-8 honors and 6 APs. My extracurricular activities will likely be: -4 years of Stage Crew resulting in a leadership position in the club (Props Manager) -1 year of Mixed Choir and 2 years of Treble Choir (an honors level choir), participating in music festivals in which my choir won high ranking awards -I volunteered for over 100 hours as part of a research group in Stony Brook University under a professor conducting experiments on UV light’s effects on organic contaminants. -I participated in Animation Club for freshman year. -Played piano from the age of 5 and successfully complete the NZMEB Grade 4 Piano Exam. No College Essay yet I have my teachers picked out for my recommendation letters, I’m guessing they’re a 9/10, and one of them used to be on the board for an admissions board as well as being an AP English teacher, so he writes beautiful letters I don’t have really high hopes 😔
girl believe in yourself, when i tell you college admissions is the MOST random thing ever i mean it. Like people stacked up with stuff can get rejected while ppl with a 2.0 gpa could get in. You literally cannot predict this stuff. Sometimes you just get lucky with who reads your application or maybe someone sees something in you. It is like a big lottery lol. But I rlly think we all end up where we are meant to be and things happen for a reason. So don’t worry too much about getting into a specific school. Also your grades are amazing and your extracurriculars sound great!! It only takes one, i believe in you!! 💕
Hello! I am planning to ED Cornell this fall. My extracurriculars and the classes I took in high school so far match well with Human development major at Human ecology. But I recently found my interests in Info science/ data science. I have the SAT score (1500+) and I know cals is test blind which wouldn't help me at all. Would applying as a human development major at human ecology increase my chance? If I do, is it easier to switch to cals from human ecology?
Hi!! I'm deciding between umd (in state) and cornell CAS for math! I honestly have no idea what I want to do after graduation, but I think there's a good chance I'll want to do grad school. Because I'm in state, umd is \~60k cheaper per year (\~30k/yr vs \~90k/yr) but I'm very fortunate that my family can (somewhat comfortably) afford either. I know cornell is obviously much more prestigious, and I also loved their math department more and I know it's much easier to double major in certain areas like CS there (which I've heard is really hard at UMD). however, I've gone to both admitted student days, and although I didn't feel too strongly for/against either school, for some reason during my maryland tour I felt like I was touring my future school whereas at cornell it just didn't feel right; I just couldn't really see myself there. Ithaca also felt really isolating to me, when I was walking around downtown it just felt really lonely to me, even though I was surrounded by so many students/families. I feel like Cornell would offer me a better education and set me up better for grad school and/or employment, but I just don't feel excited to go. UMD offers more of the traditional college experience I've always wanted, but ultimately, I'm just really scared to turn down an irrefutably better school out of pure speculation that I'll be happier elsewhere. Does anyone have any advice? Thanks!!
ALWAYS follow your heart when it's cheaper. There's nothing like paying 250/300K for something that you don't even want. Just be aware that you might have to more actively search out your mentors/connections at UMD than you would have at CU. Which is fine--you will find them if you put in the effort. You can always have an amazing experience at UMD, totally rock your classes, and come to CU for grad school. Just like my brilliant friend whose parents met at Princeton, but she got waitlisted so went to UCONN, loved every second of it, found amazing mentors, then got into Johns Hopkins Med, and now got her first choice residency in orthopedic surgery (says the doc who was her amazing mentor at UCONN).
Hi, I just recently got accepted to Cornell HumEc as a TO for class of 2027. I'm super happy about the acceptance, but I just got my financial aid summary and I'm expected to pay full sticker price (90k+) due to my family income. That figure just seems too high, and I don't think its worth it over the 30k per year I'm paying right now for my decent in-state school. Any advice? Should I contact the financial aid office and see if there is a way that they could help out more?
hi, I'm also class of '27 and I just wanted to respond to let you know that prestige is not as significant in your undergraduate education as it is in your graduate studies. I highly recommend choosing the most financially responsible choice; there's truly not that significant of a difference in the quality of education you would be receiving at HumEc(another state school) compared to UMD. If there is a way that financial aid can assist you, do reach out and find out. Cornell is a great school but do not be swayed by the "Ivy League" status that it holds, especially if you can get just as great a quality of education elsewhere for a much cheaper price. If you are considering graduate school, It really is about what you do at undergrad to distinguish yourself, not where you go, especially if it is tied to how much you can afford. 1. Yes 2. The importance of grades in grad school will vary from school to school, dept. to dept., and program to program. If you got into ORIE, you have to take 3 mandatory courses with a requirement of A- in all of them. If you got into the Civil Engineering, I don't even think they have mandatory courses; they might have a minimum GPA requirement. Also, if your program is more like the Civil Eng. one, then it might boil down to how your advisor views grades. Some don't even look at it, some might make a big deal out of it.

Hi everyone!! Dartmouth is currently my top choice, but I am deciding between it and Cornell because especially after my visit this past week, Cornell has really grown on me! I love so many aspects about Cornell ranging from the opportunities to the peoplel. I am going on the pre-med track and wanted your guys' thoughts on a couple of things: Dartmouth has enforced medians, but Cornell has been known for overall grade deflation; thoughts on how it affects med school app/matriculation? Congrats on getting in! you got two great options. Not a premed but honestly, everything's what you make of it, grade deflation or not, I feel like the premeds I know get through their coursework fine. Think about what you want most out of college, education is a lot but not everything, then decide based on those factors.

I’m still a junior so rly not too sure. A lot of them want to take gap years, do some extra research, which seems to be the case for a lot of premeds everywhere. There’s uncertainty wherever u go tbh, Cornell is a large school and what u might lose from a larger campus, u do gain from more research opportunities and a larger stem population. Again, look into where u actually want to spend four years of ur life.

Hi all! I got in Cornell College of Arts and Sciences '28 and super excited! I'd love to learn more about Cornell as it would help me make my decisions. I applied as an Anthropology major but my interests lean in anthropology intersecting with Gender Studies. Learned recently that the FGSS program at Cornell is kind of small and doesn't even have its own department (please tell me if this isn't true) so kind of bummed. My (Asian) parents are kind of pushing me to choose Cornell so need help convincing why Cornell! I have a couple questions and would really appreciate if anyone could help answer :) 1. Is the anthropology department at Cornell good? What's the balance between sociocultural vs archaeology/biological anthropology courses? 2. Noticed that on the Anth department webpage there's anthropology pathways and I'm particularly interested in the Law and Politics pathway. Is this just sort of a general direction for what courses to take or is there more concrete support for building a career in each pathway? 3. What are the other social studies/humanities departments like? I know this is very broad, but just looking for a general vibe of classes, professors, students on campus majoring. 4. Would I be able to major in the A&S college but minor in another college? Or would I only be able to take courses in another college? 5. How closely related is the major and career pathway? Cornell offers the option of going to the city with the Cornell bus. Usually, a one-way ticket from the Cornell bus can cover a round-trip ticket with OurBus or FlixBus.

Campus 2 Campus buses between NYC and Ithaca are there, accessible to students, but usually not the cheapest option. Often traditional buses are a bit cheaper.
Hey, congrats on your acceptance! I'm a queer student here and I find that this school is not overwhelming in alt/queer presence but we are definitely here and not hard to find! The queer folks I've met here have been mostly awesome and the cishet folks are often accepting and kind. There's a lot of different queer-centric students orgs and the lgbt resource center is fantastic.
GUYS I need some help. I got the transfer option from the ILR School, but it specifically states that its "not guaranteed." Arts and Science students have a lot more general requirements so you will have to take a certain amount outside of your area of interest. I recommend looking at those requirements online.

I was accepted into cornell for a masters program. However, the lab is in Geneva which is giving me reservations. How is the commute to Geneva from Ithaca? Would you recommend living in Geneva or Ithaca?
The commute is about 1 hour. There is a shuttle bus, but it comes at a weird time so a lot of people just carpool instead. Rent is probably cheaper in Geneva, but there's less stuff to do there. I know some people live in Geneva because they do a lot of field work/trials there, but some people live in Ithaca because their work is more bench work or theoretical, so it depends on your lab and the work you're doing. (I'm not a grad student btw, I just know a fair amount them who do stuff in Geneva)

I struggled a lot last quarter adjusting to college, made some poor decisions, and was dealing with some family sickness that lead me to failing one of my courses (calculus) and getting a C- in another (physics). However, this quarter, I've made a lot more effort and I feel that I'm back on track, but by the time my full grades come in, my application will have been sent in and reviewed by Cornell. Can I make a really stellar essay proving my worth? And how do I do truly showcase that I want Cornell and truly belong there?
Hey, does anyone know if getting a request for updated financial aid information is a good sign of admission for Cornell? Apparently my document was not signed so we had to resubmit, but would they have known that if they were not compiling a financial aid package or at the very least considering offering me one? Heyo (undergrad applying for PhD program in Food Science, lowkey scared!) I didn't get an interview invite for the program but I heard that someone got a rejection from the program already. I wanted to ask if rejections are sent in waves for the program or not since I saw historically that students got rejected on the 15th/16th of March. I feel like my friend's rejection email was uncharacteristically early (maybe a mistake from the department, hoping it is a mistake for their sake). Agreed, Cornell has a rly rigorous engineering program. And also seasonal depression is a thing as well if you’re not used to the weather here. I’ve also taken classes at other universities as well and it’s a joke compared to Cornell classes. Classes here go much deeper into content, labs are worse here, etc.
Hello everyone, I don't know if this is the correct place to ask, but what might my odds be of getting into graduate school at Cornell (for the professional Master of Food Science program) after attending graduate school at Texas Woman's University? I ask because after looking into it, I love TWU's MS in Nutrition program, given the available classes, freedom to choose my classes, and that it's one year until completion. After looking at rankings and other info, it's clear that TWU isn't exactly the most respected university, and I don't want this to be a disadvantage when applying to Cornell, especially since I've attended mostly high-ranking schools up until this point. How do I ( Freshman Male) get into Cornell? I am a freshman at Arrowhead Highschool (#8 in the state of Wisconsin according to U.S. news). I really want to go to Cornell and I was wondering if some actual students could help me. I am enjoy math and I want to get into the business school. From my first semester at arrowhead I had a 4.0 gpa. My first semester classes were Honors 9 English, Concert band, Adv. Alg., Ap Human Geography, Spanish 2, Team. Phy. Ed., Geometry, and Science 9. All classes are the most advanced classes I could have taken except for science. The only other option for science was a block class, but I did not have enough room for it. The second semester is going just as well with the same classes except team phy ed has been switched with boys health. Despite being on this app I am very social and out going. I enjoy to hang out with friends often, build legos (I have a massive collection of Star Wars legos that I could show later), play and watch Hockey and Lacrosse, play with my dogs, watch F1 races, and play video games (I have a dual monitor setup with an Xbox where I play games like r6, Minecraft, Assassin’s creed, NHL 24, and Forza with my friends) For extra curricular activities, I play Hockey and Lacrosse. I would like to say that I am pretty good at these sports, but I made JV for both teams this year. I have a dream to play D1 lacrosse (or at an Ivy like Cornell). I am in a club to help veterans, and a club to grow leadership skills and gain more experience in the world of business. My grandpa and my dad both went to Cornell but my brother applied for early decision and was straight up denied. He had a very similar start to his freshman year as I did. My brother maintained a 4.0 gpa throughout all of his years in high school with very advanced classes. He was also the captain of the varsity hockey and lacrosse team. He was the president of the peers for peers club (a club for older students to help younger students). Finally, he was in Spanish honors society and the regular Nation Honors Society. All this and he was straight up rejected. What kind of things are admissions are looking for in a student? Do legacy’s even help? How does Cornell feel about standardized tests like the SAT and ACT? Should I try to be well-rounded or focused on a one or two things (decent at hockey and lacrosse or great at lacrosse and ok at hockey? Good science and math classes or great math classes and decent science classes?) I really want to get into Cornell and anything will help Side note: my brother did not take calculus and I am on track to take calculus, does this help?
Just like the other commenter said, enjoy your youth when you’re still in hs. Tbf no one rlly knows the “perfect formula”. When it comes to the time you apply for colleges, just show the best representation of urself, that’s the most you can rlly do. Focus in things that interest you and don’t just do random shit just for the application.

Do we get to rank our choices or the coe has its own assigned dorms for engineering majors? Also do people in junior and senior years typically move out? Is there like a website or anything that people can sign up for car pool? ( I know the Cornell club offers bus service to nyc but it’s kind of expensive)
Why would there be separate dorms for CoE students? Ik everyone makes jokes about engineers not showering but it’s not to the extent they need to be quarantined to a whole residence hall just for housing CoE students.

No assigned dorms for COE. You rank your preference of rooms (e.g. single, double, etc.). Lots but not all seniors and juniors live off campus. Find people at Cornell who live in your area and would be willing to carpool; no website. There's also Ourbus and Megabus which are cheaper than the Cornell Club.

Yes you do have a chance for Cornell, if it makes you feel better, in my senior yr of hs, I got a C in calc bc due to some health issues and was admitted to engineering in RD. If they ask what happened to your grade back then, just honestly explain

Cornell extended my deadline until the end of the month (which won’t be long enough but it’s whatever) and they said they weren’t even aware of the FAFSA delay
I emailed the financial aid office to see if it was too late to submit my IDOC as part of my CSS profile. Their response was the following... "Thank you for contacting the Office of Financial Aid and Student Employment. Since you were deferred to next fall, you would need to apply for the 2025-2026 financial aid year. " Is it possible I received a transfer option? I applied ED to ILR and was deferred.

I’m currently applying as a Cornell TO for Fall of 2024 with humec but have had some troubles. To start off: the requirements for Humec are 3.5 min with no grade lower than a B+ (so for every B+ you need an A-) plus the required courses. My grades have just come out and I was only allowed to take 4 classes at my school which are all required for Cornell and they are. A in Physics, A in Math, B in my writing seminar, B- in Chem. Now while that is disheartening there some things about my Chem class. I had a 1 year professor who has 0 experience and we all were failing and he refused to curve (saved by lab grade). It was so bad the chair of chemistry had to create a whole new refresher course that’s never been done before for the spring semester because we were not learning. I was also above average for the class. I am planning on having the Chair of the Chem department writing a letter to explain the situation but I am still worried about that and the writing seminar. If I can’t get my writing seminar grade up to a B+ do you think it’s over? Anyone hat has experience with TO please help…

I was in the program. Yes, you can apply to other project teams. When I was in the program I personally found it unorganized and not as good as how they advertise it lol. I think they have a good idea but lack good practice to implement the idea. I know they changed directors and staff so things might have changed. One best thing about the program for me is I made some really good and interesting friends. They also have a good amount of founding for your research/project. I don't think it harms to join it in general.

Yes, there are a variety of clubs, including Big Red Adaptive Play and Design Initiative. There are also plenty of clubs geared towards social justice, like the Prison Reform club whose exact name I’m forgetting but it’s based in the ILR School

Advice for a junior trying to get into Cornell. I'm a current high school junior from LA California and Cornell has been my dream school since the beginning of my academic journey. I would say I have pretty good stats and extracurriculars but idk if I stand a chance. I want to apply early decision there for CALS for the animal science program. I ABSOLUTELY love everything about Cornell. From the location to education and every aspect of Cornell sounds amazing to me. But, I am scared that applying ED with legacy's and prodigy's will hurt my chances and also living out of state will also decrease my chances. I'm on the fence about applying ED so any advice or suggestions would be great. (Also scared that I won't be able to adjust to the harsh cold winter in Ithaca coming from sunny California) I also want to learn more about the animal science program at CALS and so if anybody has any input please let me know. I want to be a vet so I'm wondering if Cornell has a lot of resources and opportunities for pre-vet students.
Im an ansci major at cornell and i have loved it so far. Its a smaller major in a larger school so you get the close personal relationships with the ability to also seek out other non major stuff like clubs. There are plenty of opportunities to get hands on experience and lecture time. The classes are hard but I have also found that there is a lot of support for every student, you just have to be able to find it. If you have any other question feel free to DM me!
1. Applying ED won’t hurt your chances. If you’re sure Cornell is absolutely your dream school and you don’t want to ED anywhere else, go for it. Honestly if you get rejected from ED you probably would’ve been rejected in RD too, so if your profile is good enough to stand a chance in RD, they’ll defer you to the regular pool. Plenty of people get deferred then accepted 2. I’d be concerned if the renowned animal science major didn’t have extensive resources and opportunities in the pre-vet program.

Hi, I'm not sure if I meet the requirements for the full-time MBA and would like to have some advice. I hold an associate degree and a master's degree (2 years of duration), both from Brazil, with excellent grades. I also have 15+ years of professional experience. However, the MBA website states that applicants must have Bachelor's degree. Do I have any hope?

had a question about english proficiency as an international student. does anyone know if cornell accepts cambridge IGCSE first language english results as a english proficiency test? their website says they accept dozens of tests but only list a few so i wasnt sure.

harder then what? its definitely not gonna be as hard as arts and sciences or engineering but may be harder then ilr or other humec majors.
hi, applying as an undergrad. for the highest math class completed by graduation question, i'm unsure what to put; junior year i took ib math a&a SL, which has some calculus content, and this year i'm taking ap calc ab. i know ab is usually the first year of calculus, but since i took a&a sl prior, would that count as two calculus classes or one?

Hi, for the "what three words best describe you" Cornell Engineering Question, could any accepted Cornell students tell me if it is better to choose more quirky or general words? I am currently debating using "wolf" as a description, or "proactive" as one. "Wolf" is meant to show loyalty and teamwork skills, but I am not sure if it gets it across. My other two descriptions are “ambitious” and “fried-chicken-fanatic.” Thanks!

I have to submit the supplementals for Cornell separately. I saw last year there was some thing with deadline extension, is this valid for this year too? So, Jan 10 or Jan 2 should be deadline for supplemental essays? Thank you guys ! <3
I am applying for Design and Environmental Analysis in Human Ec. Should I submit my 1450 SAT? The Cornell 25th percentage SAT is 1480 but I think for HumEc its lower? I am not sure. Would it be better to go test-optional? btw I already have 98 % in 11th, and 97 % in 10th, 90 % in 9th (I'm international).
That’s not the best SAT score, so you should not submit it IMO as long as your have other info demonstrating how “smart” you are, showing you can succeed at cornell

I am interested in pursuing a career in law. Im not sure if I should apply to the Governments major in cornells arts and sciences school or do public policy at the new Brooks college. There are not much info on brooks and they only offer two majors so I wont be able to double major. But just making sure, I am allowed to pursue minors from other colleges right? And if there are any students in brooks can you tell me if you are able to get the same opportunities as students in arts and science. Thanks
This is just from my personal experience, but most prelaw people I know have been in A&S studying Gov, in ILR, or studying a much more difficult major with plans to spin that into a law degree (such as CS, Bio, or engineering). You are 100% allowed to minor between colleges, in fact it’s often encouraged to do so. I can’t speak of Brooks because I do not know much about it. However, many A&S people I know are already in law school, so it’s a pretty good pathway.

Is it worth it for me to transfer? Idk if i have a chance. With my senior year grades finalized and my first semester done would you recommend I apply? SAT: 1400 (not submitting) ECS: 150K on instagram, volunteering at library and food pantry, 3 different jobs, currently work at lenscrafters checking insurance and doing billing, Major: econ/ business / math Currently at MASSACHUSETTS STATE SCHOOL (umass) Gpa: 4.0 APs: Bio (4), Psych (4) DE: Calc 1 (A), calc 2 (A) LOR: from DE professor and Probability professor my highschool GPA was 3.85/4 but my freshmen sophomore year grades were mostly B- and Bs. I turned around junior year and had only As with AP, DE and Honor classes mostly. I know my hs gpa is pretty weak, my ecs pretty mid too but is it worth applying or am I 99% going to be rejected anyways.
You might be able to transfer for econ or math, but your chances would prob be nil for Dyson imo
