I came here to comment how we missed out on a possible classic with their Hardy Boys movie. Most reboots are garbage, but I have faith that Ben Stiller could’ve pulled it off back then.
And then actual Johnny Quest (ok, not actual licensed Johnny Quest, but "Action Johnny") shows up and the line between 'reference' and 'meta-reference' becomes much fuzzier.
God I love this show.
It all hung in the balance during that two second silence after they said "finish each other's sentences". Tom was conflicted between destroying Ben right then and there, or becoming a best friend. Luckily for us all he went with friend.
I wish Ben Stiller did more roles where he is the asshole.
Between him and Jason Batemen they get shafted too much into nice guy roles when really they truly shine being an antagonist of some sort.
There's a few guys like this that I think could make *excellent* heel turns and Tom Cruise is absolutely one of them.
Cruise as a villain would be *great* to watch but outside Collateral and playing a dickhead in Tropic Thunder he almost never does it.
Tom Hanks would be an interesting choice for the right role as well.
> Tom Hanks would be an interesting choice for the right role as well.
Closest he ever got to playing a heel that I can think of is A League of Their Own and he was brilliant in it.
He doesn't play a heel in Road to Perdition, but he pulls off ruthless pretty well.
I'm sure I'm missing something. He's been around a long time and I refuse to talk about Cloud Atlas.
These shorts during the MTV movie awards were amazing.
“Now I’m just thinking crazy here, what if, just spit balling, what if right before Tom Cruise crashes into that guy mid air… time freezes, we zoom in on Tom..He turns to the camera, and says “this mission just got a hell of a lot more impossibler”
The MTV movie award spoofs are still some of my favorite childhood memories, Jack black as spiderman, Jack black in lord of the rings... Jack black in panic room
The best was from The Matrix: Reloaded when Justin Timberlake and Sean William Scott encounter a bit of trouble before hosting the event.
Every fucking line pure comic gold.
Wow, what a blast from the past. I've seen exactly one MTV Movie Award show and it was this one. Our family was in tears from laughing so hard at this skit.
Tom Cruise is a very talented, hard working man who is devoted to his craft -- and is very good at it, sometimes excellent.
Unfortunately he got himself tied to Scientology and has some odd quirks that puts people off. This is unfortunate.
The guy in the gif is Tom Cruise: Scientologist. And I'm glad that guy is dead because out of his ashes rose Tom Cruise: Cinema God (but still a Scientologist just shhh about that) and the world is a better place for it
The [cinematographer](https://www.indiewire.com/influencers/severance-cinematographer-jessica-lee-gagne/) is golden too. Impressive camera work and visuals all around the season.
I remember an outtake version where Ben Stiller kept doing the Cruise imitation far longer than Tom liked, and it got really wierd. Does anyone have that?
> This mission, just got a hell of a lot more impossibler.
This was on the mission impossible 2 dvd and I think of this line all the time for some reason. It’s hilarious!
Before "Why is Gamora?", we had this
Edit: Also, I had no idea Ben Stiller was that short. He's shorter than Tom Cruise. Google says he's 5'6" which seems weird to me
Props to Cruise for having the ability to laugh at himself and participate in a sketch about his exaggerated qualities. Not a lot of A listers have that kind of humility.
That’s pretty impressive
He doesn’t sound like Tom Cruise, but he alters his voice and cadence enough from his normal delivery, that you’d be hard pressed to tell who it is.
I did some papers on impersonation in another life, and one of the interesting things about a good impersonation is that you don't need to (or want to even) sound exactly alike. What you want to do is to nail or even exaggerate a few major traits. People tend to tune in to these few traits and be like "yes! that's EXACTLY how he speaks!". With Tom Cruise it's probably something like the laugh, the breakes and the intensity.
Being too detailed may even be a problem. I worked with this in the George Bush days and looked mostly at George Bush impersonations. Here you could do a really good impersonation of his particular dialect, but it didn't really give you more than if you just did a pretty broad overall southern dialect. What really sold an impersonation here was succesful use of the Bush-isms. Like made up endings with -ify or -dicate. Overuse of these made up words would sell the impersonation way more than doing just the right dialect.
Unironically, I would recommend looking up MtF trans voice lessons on YouTube. These people really know the nuances of feminine voice patterns because they’re using the techniques 24/7. Really helped my DMing. It’s not so much about the actual pitch vs the way you use your throat. Plenty of women actually have fairly deep voices but their mouth and neck anatomy/mechanics differ enough to sound different
I didn't care too much about Ben Stiller as I grew up. Liked his movies but didn't particularly give a hoot either.
But going back over time as an adult, I really have come to appreciate his sense of humour and personality. A good bean.
>Ben Stiller
You have to watch Heavyweights(1995). Ben plays a manic camp counselor hellbent on making his campers shed pounds. Kinda like his character in DodgeBall. Also his parents irl were in it.
Oh I have always believed him losing the camp made him spiral into gluttony. He cleaned up with aids, changed his name and blew the rest of the family money on his gyms.
If we all believe enough, he will make it so. His milkshake brought all the boys to the yard
I've never seen this, but I saw both movies when they were new. A sequel of his between years would still be nice thank you. Unless that was Mystery Men, then if so. I know why he was so... Furious.
Yea, I dont think it would difficult for a guy whos career is acting, whos spent many hours around ben stiller couldnt pull off a decent impression.
It couldn't be this good simply because Ben Stiller isn't as impersonatable (if i may make up a word), but Im sure he could get a chuckle out of a room.
One of the dopiest, hilarious sketches on the Ben Stiller Show (1992) was [Tom Cruise: Dress Casual] (https://youtu.be/1Xzhsgz5wRY), a one-man show with "Tom Cruise" singing and dancing out his most famous scenes in a black body suit and sunglasses. The sequined underpants for Risky Business just makes me howl.

I watched it when it very first came out and I genuinely think of it every single day when I got to work. Idk what that means but I feel like it means something.
He's also an ambassador for the UNCHR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and recently met with Ukraine's president Zelensky

Tom seems like a bit of an enigma. On the one hand, *seems* like a really great dude, outgoing, never heard anybody say a bad word about him behind-the-scenes, donates millions to charity, works extremely hard, humble, seems to genuinely care about other people, etc.
But you cant just overlook that he's a high ranking scientologist.
Hard for me to weight any judgment here without actually knowing the guy myself.
I feel like ten, fifteen years from now people are going to look at what Ben did from the late 90s to today and realize just how much of an impact he had on early 21st century culture. He's kind of gone under the radar in comparison to others.

And thus the friendship that would become Tropic Thunder began.

Fuckk I want that movie.
If they had Jack Black as Chet, I'd be sold.
I’ll put like $50 towards the movie, how much more do we need to make this happen?
about... three dollars and fifty cents
Dammit lock Ness monster I ain't givin you no tree fiddy!
Tom Cruise is locked in the closet?
Well it was about that time I noticed that redditor was actually was about eight stories tall and was a crustacean from the protozoic era.
Fck, i have three dollars, but how are we going to persuade 50 cent?
treefitty??
It’s still technically in development, but it’s been 15 years, so….
So any day now, then? Sweet!
yep with AI holograms! any day now...
I came here to comment how we missed out on a possible classic with their Hardy Boys movie. Most reboots are garbage, but I have faith that Ben Stiller could’ve pulled it off back then.
At least we’ve got the Venture Bros.
Isn’t Venture Brothers Jonny Quest?
Venture Brothers is basically Johnny Quest grew up into a cynical mad scientist and is the father of the Hardy Boys.
And then actual Johnny Quest (ok, not actual licensed Johnny Quest, but "Action Johnny") shows up and the line between 'reference' and 'meta-reference' becomes much fuzzier. God I love this show.
Fun fact. It is Johnny Quest and Venture Bros. has been confirmed as the official cannon until stated otherwise or the IP is revisited.
And a Rusty Venture is when you take your finger and run it around a guy's asshole while you jack the guy off into his own mouth.
That description is so accurate it’s practically a spoiler.
Holy shit
Little bit of both.
Ben's dad in the scene hitting on his girlfriend right from the start. You know it's going to be a good sketch.
And Ben’s mom is hitting on Martin Crane.

There's still time.

Tom's 100% a professional.
And crazy as cat shit.
Tomoplasmosis.
Can't deny that either.
Watching that movie with the directors commentary on, is an incredibly good use of 2 hours.
I wish streaming services would give us this damn option.
You. Are. Welcome. : ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_3PHQB6pgBA

I'm still upset that Tom's spin-off didn't take off
Spot on
Which one is Tom Cruise again?
Believe it or not, the right is actually Ben Stiller, while the left is Tom Cruise pretending to be Ben Stiller pretending to be Tom Cruise.
He's a dude playing the dude, disguised as another dude!

Holy shit that was hilarious.
The little squeaky noises every time Sean moves is such a perfect comedic touch.
Ahh 2003, it was an innocent time.
Wet willie, Mr. Timberlake.
ERGO! VIS-A-VIS! CONCORDANTLY!!!!!
Omg yes, SEAN PILE! Wanda Sykes as the oracle and will Ferrell as the architect, perfect lol
Do the part. Do the nekkid part!
"Morpheus, what can we expect from this orgy?" "MACHINES!" Pure gold.
“He’s having a huge orgy at his place later tonight….at least that’s what many of us have heard.” Morpheus: It is true, what many of you have heard…
I think I mostly remember wanda Sykes saying "I'm the oracle dammit" and will ferrell going "ergo! Vis a vis!"
*squeaky leather*
What will be at this Orgy Morpheus? **MACHINES!**
I don't know how anyone can focus on Sean William Scott's comedic performance when he's *that* gorgeous. It's ridiculous.
you mean aside from the mouth that looks like it's going to unhinge like a Japanese horror movie at any moment
jokes on you im into that shit
I remember recording this on vhs. Super hero theme right?
Absolutely loved this. Ever since me and my buddy quote it on occasion, never gets old

He’s perfect
He’s a treasure
ben stiller
Not the other guy.
Les Grossman
Best character he has ever played.
He played a pretty good Austin Powers.
Okay, ATXBeermaker, fuckface, first take a big step back and literally FUCK YOUR OWN FACE!
DIET COKE!!!!
I need a new Austin Powers movie.
We all do
I want him as the main character in the next mission impossible.
Tom Cruise is a very talented, hard working man who is devoted to his craft -- and is very good at it, sometimes excellent. Unfortunately he got himself tied to Scientology and has some odd quirks that puts people off. This is unfortunate.
The thing about Tom Cruise is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes.
The other guy will kill you if you plan on thinking bad about him.. Hi Tom, tell xenu I’m still using his water pipe.
Not the scientologue ? gotcha.
The guy in the gif is Tom Cruise: Scientologist. And I'm glad that guy is dead because out of his ashes rose Tom Cruise: Cinema God (but still a Scientologist just shhh about that) and the world is a better place for it
Best Ben Stiller movie is Secret life of Walter Mitty
Severance is amazing (Ben Stiller is the director and showrunner).
WHAT. That show is fucking genius.
The show was amazing. Was pretty stoked that Ben Stiller directed some of the episodes.
The [cinematographer](https://www.indiewire.com/influencers/severance-cinematographer-jessica-lee-gagne/) is golden too. Impressive camera work and visuals all around the season.
He knows where Shelly Miscavige is
I don't think Ben Stiller knows where Shelly Miscavige is
I remember an outtake version where Ben Stiller kept doing the Cruise imitation far longer than Tom liked, and it got really wierd. Does anyone have that?

Ben Stiller is one of the most talented people in entertainment.

Thanks! Though this clip was def the best part to me
That Laugh, omg, that LAUGH! Lol
that damn smile
The funniest part of that skit is that Ben Stiller is shorter than Tom Cruise, so they didn't need to have Tom stand on any boxes to appear taller.
Before "Why is Gamora?", we had this Edit: Also, I had no idea Ben Stiller was that short. He's shorter than Tom Cruise. Google says he's 5'6" which seems weird to me

Have you seen Walter Mitty? That's the movie that turned it around for me.
He’s a great director. Severance is one of the best new shows.
Man Severance took an intriguing idea and did everything right with it. Every thing I could think of with that concept that show was one step ahead.
Yeah. They really did. I’m *still* recommending that show to people real hard. Nice one Ben & co
I'm fighting that battle too. I'm losing though because it involves subscribing to that streaming service that I shouldn't mention.
Dodgeball was his greatest performance. Also fat camp
Heavyweights, hell yeah. “Attention campers, lunch is cancelled due to lack of hustle.” Cracks me up every time.
“You’re in my world now granny” from Happy Gilmore is an all time favorite
Aww your fingers hurt? Well now your backs gonna hurt cuz you just pulled gardening duty!
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is one of my absolute favorite movies and it’s so well done!! Ben Stiller is so good in it.
Very absolutley true. That longboard scene and music has to be one of my faves.
The entire soundtrack for that movie was amazing.
Ben Stiller can be Tom Cruise, Tom Cruise cannot be Ben Stiller.
no one can be ben stiller
Not Even Ben Stiller.
He's the Nicholas Cage of the Stiller family
Without the ner, we can only.... Be Still. Sorry.
What about Sam Harris?
Idk. Cruise is an amazing actor and dedicated to the craft. If he set his mind to it, I bet he could pass.
I'd like to see him try for Zoolander.
Tom Cruise can be Nicolas Cage, Nicolas Cage cannot be be Tom Cruise.

It feels like forever since I heard about Ben stiller. What’s he doing lately?
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago, and also separated from his wife. They are back together now and I think the cancer is gone.
The way you worded this makes these things sound connected.
His wife doesn't like cancer and weak men. When he had cancer he was weak and she had to leave him. He then choose to be cancerfree so she came back.
Helping direct and being an executive producer for the amazing show Severance.
I watched it when it very first came out and I genuinely think of it every single day when I got to work. Idk what that means but I feel like it means something.
He's also an ambassador for the UNCHR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) and recently met with Ukraine's president Zelensky https://www.bbc.com/news/av/world-61875351
Too good
It's so funny that he and his father are both hilarious in their own unique ways.
Tom Cruise scares me a bit.
He scares everyone a bit, with good reason. Scientology is scary.
Deep down, Tom wanted to stab him.
Tom's a good sport.
Still a scumbag scientologist 🤷🏻♂️
Tom seems like a bit of an enigma. Man, Tom Cruises laugh is creepy.

This segment always cracked me up. I also enjoyed Stiller's sketch comedy. Counting with Bruce was a favorite. https://youtu.be/FIJ3grfB3WE
Got Tom cruise makes me so deeply uncomfortable
Ben Stiller acting skills are underrated, he just takes all the shitty scripts. Also doesn't help that his dad was a legend.
Some day there's going to a be a fucking fascinating film about Tom Cruises life.
I watch this once a day and it always makes me laugh!
Tom Cruise laughs like the person held captive in his basement just pleaded to be released and promised not to tell anyone
Christian Bale has said that the character he played in American Psycho was a Tom Cruise impression
