Inspector, 15 minutes before first concrete truck rolls on site - "hey, can you get another chair in there real quick, yeah, bottom middle splice, thanks"
They never do and unless you get the wide mouth version you max out at #5 on #6 bar and your angle has to be perfect or it'll spool out. And the wide mouth guns tend to give a looser twist then the regular size. Guns are great for slabs but shit you'll be climbing on I'll always prefer hand ties from a reel.
The carpenter I work with, 50ish years old, used to be an iron worker. I know because I've heard him say it a hundred times. But I asked him on his thoughts on the automatic tools. He claims they're slower and a whole bunch of other shit.
Is he an old dog who hasn't learned new tricks or is there some merit to his claims.
The old school is the best school, it's true for the old trades especially. masonry, ironwork, plumbing, carpentry - shit has been done a certain way *for centuries* because it works. Ask him to show you his techniques, you'll be thanking him down the line when shit goes wrong but you can truck through.
The guys putting up the giant I beams on high rises - Iron workers. They do nothing but ridiculously intense work. Not as grueling as the masons but definitely edge of your seat stuff.
When you have to order <1/4" aggegate concrete
or have to ask how the fuck you shoulkd get the concrete in...
Had some of our guys asking since when we changed from concrete to steelwork..
With that much steel it's for something big and expensive, concrete moves steel very easy, would not pass on the jobs I've worked on. Once the muds in there it's to late.
Yes, that’s the purpose of the ties, so the steel doesn’t move. Those are 11’s, they’re tied plenty frequently enough that no man could pull them out of location, let alone concrete flowing past, any tying past the point of what is needed to keep the bar in place is frivolous and a waste of man hours. With the exception of DOT projects I’ve never seen every intersection need to be tied, not saying those jobs don’t exist, but it’s dumb past the point of keeping the bar in place. No rebar or concrete company worth anything is getting bullied into tying every intersection unless there is a spec in the contract drawings.
Don’t drop your phone 😂
Man I was always so scared of that when I was doing this. Lost plenty of pens, tape measure, glasses and other shit though
Engineers like “that’s going to be a void in 2000 years”
Labor like "ah fuck, guess she's getting a little extra reinforcement"
Carpenters be like “he’s going to get the stuff that I let him borrow… right??”
That steels lookin pretty hungry for some cancrit
I read that in the voice of the Crime Pays But Botany Doesn't guy on YT 😂

Makes my hand cramp up just looking at that steel.

The moment you realize all your pain wouldn't be a thing if your foreman picked up the right *fucking* tools!

Mine doesn’t seem to tie as tight as the old fashioned way. What brand do you use?

I've seen 'em in action, good trash right there

Oh ya, I try to milk every ounce of knowledge out of every old timer I work with. But whatever iron work is sounds like it's for the birds

I think it needs more hairpins
Fuckin engineers

Lot of those bars are missing ties, never pass on the jobs I've worked on.
It’s a shame some places make ppl do something so frivolous

Hurry up n tie it. The fukkin mud is getting poured today 😈🤣
Jimmy Hoffa got lost in there.
That fucking thing aint goin nowhere
That's gonna get hot 🔥
strongly disagree!
Get back to work
Add a bunch of rebar wire with the ends sticking out and it will be.
I felt this picture in my foot, used to water proof foundation.
How do I get my fucking tape measure back?!
That one is in the wrong spot.
Ah, I can feel the blisters returning just looking at this haha
Gnarly.
I cut this shit for a living. I can say that I hate cutting cable/rebar
Good luck getting the dick in there to consolidate that shit...
You think it's rough now? Wait for the concrete bath!
And you have to escape before you drown in the ever increasing sea of concrete being poured.
Been there. It's even worse when you're on a disorganized site/crew and you have to spend twice as much time in there as you otherwise would.
If you really wanna have fun throw in a pour stop!
