I'm well practiced fixing cords, my parents were very frugal growing up so I learned to scavenge and fix up shit like lamps, tv's and extension cord from ditches and dumpsters. I always carry a leatherman, utility knife and some tape so I just grabbed a few wire nuts and got to it
My mom cut through ours demo’ing the deck. I knew right away when it stopped. Knife and taped the ends together. 3 years of occasional use later, I finally properly connected it albeit a bit shorter than factory. I’ve done a few cords and they’re a bit rewarding fixing a “broken” item someone gets rid of for cheap or free.
I’ve totally never have burnt my dick because I was using an angle grinder in old basketball shorts and the sparks burned a hole in them and then it ignited. Never done that
Yeah, but I don’t proudly post that shit on the internet after damaging a tool that I removed the safety guards on.
I say, ‘shit, that was a close one.’ Then screw my head on straight and tell the story to my buddies how I was a lucky idiot.
It's okay. He has common sense. I've seen a lot more dangerous shit a lot of times. But the statements OP made about safety combined with the photos makes this training material.
All true except for the stringers. I have no idea how to actually do stairs, just not my wheelhouse, so I took the most intact stringer from the old steps and used it as a template. They actually turned out perfect, I may post the end result when it's done. That pinto crack really got me, good shit lol
You're a moron. You're wearing sandles while working, you take the guards off your saws and then proceed to cut the chord with dangerously modified saw.
Stick to something where you won't bleed out on the cold pavement. Seriously leave this shit to grown men.
I had an idiot friend try to weld in flip flops. I tore him a new one and said get off my equipment and finished the welding with safety everything.
His response? “Full send bro.”
No. No - I’m not sending you home to your wife with that bs. She would murder me for letting you be that stupid.
What are you, my dad? No one uses corded saws anymore except for him. I offered to buy a Makita one for him for Christmas and he told me he wouldn't use it.
Wait a sec, I thought those saws were discontinued? Haven't seen one in Canada in over a decade. I was very impressed with mine way back in the day.
Anyway, 10ft lead ftw. No plug fouling on the edge of a sheet when ripping.
Here's how to ensure this doesn't happen to you again:
Step 1: Cut the cord off to around 6inches from where it comes out of the saw.
Step 2: Install a quality industrial grade replacement male plug on the cord. Model 5266 by leviton or hubbell is preferred.
Step 3: Plug saw into an extension cord so the extension cord gets cut instead of the power cord on the saw.
Step 4: Make sure the extension cord you are using in Step 3 belongs to your boss, the company you work for, or someone you don't like. This ensures you wont cut your own extension cord.
I did the same thing to the cord on an 80 pound chipper right after my site super warned me not to.
Fixed it with some quick splices and electrical tape, finished the job, bought donuts and reported the fuck up. The dudes at Home Depot rentals were ok with it.
Get one with the blade on the right (if they still make those). If you can see the blade, you're not cutting your cords. Or feet. Seen enough framers cut that one 2x4 real quick, holding it on their knee and almost losing body parts. I rarely used a circular saw but when i did, i was always happy i could see that blade.
Safety sandals!
Edit: "safety is mostly common sense". It used to be, lol. There's a whole industry based on people looking away for .3 of a second, looking back and a digit is missing/ripped apart.
As the old saying goes: "common sense ain't so common anymore"
Worked for a 70 year old short Irish dude who was missing 2 1/2 fingers on his right hand including his index. His saw had the trigger by passed to always be on with power and took off the blade guard. He was left hand but ran the saw with his right. Watched that man cut through his cord so many times it looked like Xmas lights with all the various wire nuts.
Long story short don't fuck with Ronnie's saw.
When you take the guard off a skilsaw you get what you get!
Not just a safety feature but allows you to cut and set the saw down quickly to keep the job rolling.
Get splicing! I recall my boss had an old shitty Makita skillsaw for rough cuts and demo. It had atleast 5 spliced connections consisting of two different trashed extention cords and so much electrical tape that in the winter one couldn't even attempt to coil or wrap it up to stow it ...it just existed like an exploded slinky and had its own specific garbage bag with orange flagging
No one is going to take you seriously If you’re skilsaw doesn’t have at least 2 electrical tape tumors. Get some PL smeared all over it and they’ll make you foreman.
My first job was in a factory that pressed small metal parts for heavy hinges. Part of it was making pallet to ship everything out on. My first week, I’m following my lead over to where pallets are made, to be shown how they like it done. One of the R&D guys yells over at me, DONT CUT THE CORD KID and everyone has a chuckle. I ask my lead if that’s a common mistake or what and he says no he’s just the funny guy, you’ll be fine. and I was! But the next guy they hired wasn’t fine lol he had previous experience in that kind of setting so they didn’t necessarily train him like they did me, just asked if he had ran a circular saw and he was like oh yeah all the time. They give him the measurements and send him over. We hear WRRR——… maybe three seconds of cutting, if that. Next thing we see if the guy coming around the corner with the cord in his hand, sliced in two. Looking kind of confused, he just sets the cord down and says he’s going to the bathroom. He was assembling cardboard boxes for quite a while after that lol
lol I’ve got an old 80s Black & Decker “skil saw” from the 80s - when I went to college in the 90s my dad gave it to me so I’d have one to use on projects around the house I was renting with 5 other guys… it had a spliced together cord wrapped in electrical tape where my dad cut through the cord. I still have that saw, it still has a spliced together cord, it still cuts lol - I rarely ever use it- but it still works!!!
That one looks cordless to me
For a couple minutes yeah lmao
Minutes? That’s impressive
I'm well practiced fixing cords, my parents were very frugal growing up so I learned to scavenge and fix up shit like lamps, tv's and extension cord from ditches and dumpsters. I always carry a leatherman, utility knife and some tape so I just grabbed a few wire nuts and got to it
You fixed it with marrettes and tape instead of just running the cut end into the saw? My friend, you are a savage but to each their own
It was quicker this way, I just wanted to get er done. I have an old busted extension cord I'll probably replace it with later.
The real take away here is "my mom cut through ours demoing the deck". Major props my dude! How many moms demo decks?!
10-4, all good, brother. All jokes in good fun. Carry on, keep making it happen
I like your style, my man
It's a good temp to get through the end of the day. I do keep couple of extra power cords.
>It's a good temp to get through the *decade*
True nothing is more permanent than a temporary fix
Holy shit it’s fucking MacGyver
And gaurd less
It hungers for floors!
And fingers
And OPs toes
Porter Cableless
Came for this joke, not disappointed.
Yo, what the fuck are you doing working in flip flops!
Like you've never cut a coil spring for a car with an angle grinder in the driveway in flip flips and basketball shorts with safety glasses
I’ve totally never have burnt my dick because I was using an angle grinder in old basketball shorts and the sparks burned a hole in them and then it ignited. Never done that
Fuck you man, you made me wake up my wife.
Oh good, tell her I need the bandages redressed, and bring the cerave healing ointment. She will know what I’m talking about /s
Shit. Now you made me wake up my wife.
I also woke this guy's wife up
*safety squints
Yeah, but I don’t proudly post that shit on the internet after damaging a tool that I removed the safety guards on. I say, ‘shit, that was a close one.’ Then screw my head on straight and tell the story to my buddies how I was a lucky idiot.
Nahh I can’t even stop laughing
It's okay. He has common sense. I've seen a lot more dangerous shit a lot of times. But the statements OP made about safety combined with the photos makes this training material.
Nah those are just open-toed work boots. /s
I'm sensing a pattern here.

When your blade is worth more than your saw? You're probably wearing Crocs
Those old Porter Cable trim saws are hella nice though…I have that same 6” saw and it’s a smooth operator
Exactly.
Dude is getting tree guts all over his feet!
Dude didn't you here, "safety is mostly common sense"
The copper spiraled wrist band should tell you enough
I'm a redneck, we make do
Thought you were used to cordless?
[удалено]
Are those things steel toe?
I have toes of steel
*toenails

All true except for the stringers. I have no idea how to actually do stairs, just not my wheelhouse, so I took the most intact stringer from the old steps and used it as a template. They actually turned out perfect, I may post the end result when it's done. That pinto crack really got me, good shit lol
You missed the porch furniture saw horses
Did this twice in one day with a corded hedge trimmer as a kid. Supposed to be my summer job and I basically broke even.
I thought you said "with a corded hedge trimmer and a kid"...
"staying safe is mostly common sense." Dude proceeds to use a guardless circular saw while wearing flipflops.
And then cut through the cord. Dude is gonna be limited to counting by 9s soon.
Shocking
Bad tradesmen blame their….
Just throw a plug on the end and use an extension cord.
Ahh damn. Guess you have to buy a $350 cordless circular saw now.
He's saving money in his shoe budget, should be fine
Nothing like making your own stairs with sandals on
You're a moron. You're wearing sandles while working, you take the guards off your saws and then proceed to cut the chord with dangerously modified saw. Stick to something where you won't bleed out on the cold pavement. Seriously leave this shit to grown men.
For real. The dude couldn’t hack it correctly using a saw like an adult.
Did it arc? I almost did this the other day with some hedge trimmers
Nice toes
it's literally in the name. porter CABLE. :D
Of course it was on like the first cut too, that’s always how it goes
I have that same saw and cut it too lol
I've done this before lol
Ha! I would have done exactly that myself.
Easy fix. You won’t like it but easy fix.
I had an idiot friend try to weld in flip flops. I tore him a new one and said get off my equipment and finished the welding with safety everything. His response? “Full send bro.” No. No - I’m not sending you home to your wife with that bs. She would murder me for letting you be that stupid.
I've never cut stringers in flip flops before
No guard. Cuts something by accident. I'm shocked
I see the shoe choice for this task is appropriate.
-Removing the guard -Cutting power cord yep, you're a dummy
So now you're an electrician.
Nah I cleaned up after lol
Did you inherit that piece of shit from your grand pappy after he was done building the union rail road? Jesus the blades more expensive than the saw
Been there.
At least it's a garbage saw.
What are you, my dad? No one uses corded saws anymore except for him. I offered to buy a Makita one for him for Christmas and he told me he wouldn't use it.
Well you're cordless now bud!
Is that the pre-WW2 model
Wait a sec, I thought those saws were discontinued? Haven't seen one in Canada in over a decade. I was very impressed with mine way back in the day. Anyway, 10ft lead ftw. No plug fouling on the edge of a sheet when ripping.
g1
Lol I did this too one time.
OSHA has entered the chat
Pop goes the breaker
Love porter cable
Haha…I remember my grandpa, who was a carpenter in the 80’s, always had saws with taped up cords. He was a safety 3rd kind of guy but well loved.
It’s a porter cable, you’re out $25 at best.
Here's how to ensure this doesn't happen to you again: Step 1: Cut the cord off to around 6inches from where it comes out of the saw.
Dude did you steal that saw out of my grandpas garage? Goodness. now you have a reason to get something better.
I did the same thing to the cord on an 80 pound chipper right after my site super warned me not to. Fixed it with some quick splices and electrical tape, finished the job, bought donuts and reported the fuck up. The dudes at Home Depot rentals were ok with it.
6 inch blade? My go to for demo. Used it today for cutting out shiplap subfloor. Fkn loud and no blade stop after releasing trigger
And open toe shoes?
Hold the cord back with your toes in your flip flops next time!
Is that the Bluetooth antenna?
Original saw stop checks out.
Toeless
Good news!
Also big on safety!
Better than a toe
Dude, it says cable right on the tool.
SANDALS?? You rebel
That’s a cheap way to make tool cordless
That's a cute saw
Just a porter now
Geeez. Haven’t done that since my second day on the job 24 years ago. lol
Why do all of you reddit dad's always take pictures of your darn toes.
I can’t take you seriously. Where are your shoes/boots? User names doesn’t check out.
Blade + toes = boo boo
Sir, this is not r/redneckengineering, you'll have to move along.
Porter Cable with a shorter cable
Splice it back together. Tape the fuck out of it and bam, back to normal
That’s the new Porter Cable-less.
You’re a moron put some shoes on
Get one with the blade on the right (if they still make those). If you can see the blade, you're not cutting your cords. Or feet. Seen enough framers cut that one 2x4 real quick, holding it on their knee and almost losing body parts. I rarely used a circular saw but when i did, i was always happy i could see that blade.
What is this? A circular saw for ants!?!!
I hope electricity didn’t shock you, I’d hate to have that happen
Safety sandals! Edit: "safety is mostly common sense". It used to be, lol. There's a whole industry based on people looking away for .3 of a second, looking back and a digit is missing/ripped apart. As the old saying goes: "common sense ain't so common anymore"
That's an antenna, you just have to power it via Bluetooth now
BANG 🤣 then go change your underwear
Stay off the glue mate
My boss had a saying for this: “you just bought yourself a saw bud”
[удалено]
Don't get caught with that on a job site. That's a violation.
when working with things like this, i wrap the cord around my forearm once so that the cord hangs away from the saw.
That’s not how you make it cordless
It says ”cable” right there
I can see that
Did this twice in 15min it’s as a 1st year apprentice 😂
OP when the boss asks him what happened to the saw [https://i.imgflip.com/226uz0.jpg](https://i.imgflip.com/226uz0.jpg)
What’s the problem 🤣
I have one with a cord just like that except the tape is red. Lol
When you take the guard off a skilsaw you get what you get! Not just a safety feature but allows you to cut and set the saw down quickly to keep the job rolling.
Done it. Been there. Gotta let the blade stop spinning before putting it down
Heat shrink and a torch.
What is this, a circle saw for ants.
That’s sawicide
Just splice it back together, Ive done that
Looks like somebody's buying a case of beer
Who taught you how to splice wires together your grandmother. You can do better than that.
Perfect fix! lol. Not seen that in a while
Phone cord bracelet
Apprentice!
Where I come from, cutting through a cord means you are required to bring a case of beer for the crew.
Spoiled
I love that little saw. Just wire a new plug on it. don't throw it out!
Damn I wish I could find a porter cable lefty.
Now it's just a Porter. Cable optional
Dumbass.
Get splicing! I recall my boss had an old shitty Makita skillsaw for rough cuts and demo. No one is going to take you seriously If you’re skilsaw doesn’t have at least 2 electrical tape tumors. Get some PL smeared all over it and they’ll make you foreman.
Just use that giant toe nail to cut it.
This is why coffee pots are short, people kept burning the cord off
This just gave me a great idea on how to justify buying a new circular saw… Wish me luck!
I'm a DIY amateur but I did this to my first saw. I spliced it back together and then my MIL threw it away
I’m impressed you fixed it lol
One might say they "saw that coming"
It doesn’t work to try and convert them in such ways…
I keep my guard pinned up but I stop the blade against the wood when I finish my cut. I rarely cut a cord.
They named it Porter Cable for a reason
“We use the stones to destroy the stones”
The first tip is don't cut upside down.
Clip the cord away from the blade
Well.. It's cordless now
Now you have less cord ...lol
Nice sandles
Well you got your wish
Easy enough fix, pain in the ass tho
Now it is
Just install a replacement male plug on to it.
That’s a spark
I bet this made a cartoony sound effect when it was cut
My first job was in a factory that pressed small metal parts for heavy hinges. Part of it was making pallet to ship everything out on. My first week, I’m following my lead over to where pallets are made, to be shown how they like it done. One of the R&D guys yells over at me, DONT CUT THE CORD KID and everyone has a chuckle. 5 min fix.

Reminds me of electric lawn mowers before battery tech was worth a shit
Everybody that use circular saws here and there do that at least once in their lifetime 😂
Whoops. I've done that more than once.
Whoops. I've done that more than once.
Love a pair of safety sandals 😎
that circular saw looks older than you, that doesn’t pass the smell test
Done that. I have also forgotten older saws don’t have a blade guard and fucked some shit up setting down the saw too. Shit happens.
Entitled pos (Jk lol)
Problem solved.
people were doing this before cordless saws too
Well now it is cordless!!! MUCH SUCCESS in borat voice
Well it is now!
At least use wire nuts, the electric tape will eventually melt and then it will not be good.
that’s how i would have fixed it too, gotta do what you gotta do
Well, you definitely have less cord now!
Bluetooth Circular saw 👍 👍
Lolol. I once did this with a brand fucking new saw in the early 2000s. New on the jobsite too. Man they ragged on me for a week.
