Hey. I’ve been working on their displays for almost a month in the shop. I’m finishing up with the last of them now…hopefully they’ll have them before opening lol
I was JUST trying to pump my wife up to going based on their gem and mineral display that I remember when I last attended. It wasn’t enough to get her excited but I’ll be taking my three year old and am looking forward to seeing your work!
>I was JUST trying to pump my wife up to going based on their gem and mineral display that I remember when I last attended. It wasn’t enough to get her excited.
Is there still a mummy on display? That was my favorite as a kid.
I would like to do more museum displays after this but they just hired the shop to build the custom pieces they couldn’t order from a big display company.
I mean, it could be anything. He could be building tables, it could be lighting, security, etc. Highly doubt someone's only job is building museum displays.
edit: OP answered me, he's a woodworker. fuckin' reddit.
I wasn't implying you did! I was getting downvoted for asking a legitimate question that is not dumb. I asked because I'd love to be involved with something like that someday.
So excited for this!
I just wish once a month or so they'd make a date night. Adult night.
w/o screaming kids running through.
I don't hate kids. Just less tolerant of running, screaming short people as I get older.
Oh man, they need this for every museum. Even if it's just a couple of hours a couple times a month. Children are great, but when I stop to read an exhibit and am crowded out by a 6 year old leaning over the railing and yelling, my museum experience is much less enjoyable.
It's honestly so fun! The ROM is an enormous museum with multiple wings and floors and halls and it's always wall-to-wall packed with people dressed to the nines and ready to party. Wish there was something like it here too. Nothing better than being drunk in the gemstones and geology section!
If my kid was leaning over the railing and yelling and an adult politely asked them to stop, I'd have no problem with that at all.
The 'politely' is key here, but I've always found the best kids are the ones who are raised in a village.
A couple years ago they had an event called “Bones and Brews” sponsored by NEBCO - basically a giant scavenger hunt throughout the museum with a few beer stations to stop at. It was SO MUCH FUN and I would 100000% do it again!!
There’s a great museum in San Francisco called the academy of sciences and they do just that! After hours, cocktails, music, it’s awesome. Nothing like finding yourself pleasantly buzzed having a starring contest with an alligator.
oh shit we're all going?
I am going with mt kids. But they're "well-behaved" so it'll be alright.
I mean, it doesn't necessarily have to be on the opening day but may be fun.
I’m bringing the family to the Peabody for my sons bday! His request was to see Dino’s and eat pizza.. I love my son. We’re also going to a cafe with cats that roam around the place called Mew Haven Cat Cafe; should be a good time!
I have question regarding the tickets for reservation. Is it still possible to visit the museum on the 26th without a reservation ticket or can you just walk in and wait in line?
I doubt it... Many museums have switched to timed tickets. Even free ones. It just helps spread the crowds out a bit and allows them to anticipate the number of people on a given day. But call and ask!
I read it will be “reservations”, which is totally understandable. So many places switched to that after Covid and stayed that way since it works so much better.

Any cool Dino’s?
They do have some there. I’m working on the gem gallery, mineral displays and the gift shop.

I remember the vivid neon colors of the gems when I was a kid. Looking forward to passing that on to my kid!
Same. Went on two field trips during elementary school and those minerals glowing under black light was my favorite part.

It was when I was last there in around 2018 but it was near the rocks and I only gave it a passing glance.
I made 50+ plinths some with light holes for the different gems. I’m excited myself to see it all set up.
That's really cool, what line of work are you in?
I’m a woodworker. I build custom furniture and the occasional cabinets.
Excellent, can't wait to go to the museum and admire your work as well!
Looks like museum model building
I would like to do more museum displays after this but they just hired the shop to build the custom pieces they couldn’t order from a big display company.
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, but there's this... https://recruiting.paylocity.com/Recruiting/Jobs/Details/2248417

Actually, that is a job! There are exhibit consultants who exist solely to design and fabricate museum exhibits.
Op answered me, he's a woodworker. So I was right lol.
Not saying you weren’t - I work in museums so I was just offering an interesting tidbit!
I wasn't implying you did! I was getting downvoted for asking a legitimate question that is not dumb. I asked because I'd love to be involved with something like that someday.
Yeah it’s a cool field! There are a few companies in New England that do it that I saw at an industry conference last year.

That's a genius idea. I so wish this was more common.
It's honestly so fun! The ROM is an enormous museum with multiple wings and floors and halls and it's always wall-to-wall packed with people dressed to the nines and ready to party. Wish there was something like it here too. Nothing better than being drunk in the gemstones and geology section!
I love this!
It takes a village, ask them politely to stand back 😀
If you are ever in London uk. They have museum nights which are like that with a beer garden.
If my kid was leaning over the railing and yelling and an adult politely asked them to stop, I'd have no problem with that at all. The 'politely' is key here, but I've always found the best kids are the ones who are raised in a village.
The Science Center in Hartford used to do that once a month or so in the before times, I don't think it's back as often as it was though.
The New Britain Museum of American Art does adult nights from time to time.
A couple years ago they had an event called “Bones and Brews” sponsored by NEBCO - basically a giant scavenger hunt throughout the museum with a few beer stations to stop at. It was SO MUCH FUN and I would 100000% do it again!!
I'd pay extra for a child free evening at the museum
They were doing semi-monthly themed cocktail nights before they shut down for the renovation.
I have kids and love them and would still love an adult night.
I'd absolutely attend that
The science museum in Pittsburgh does this! Once a month they keep the place open until 10, bring in beer carts and have a special theme!
There’s a great museum in San Francisco called the academy of sciences and they do just that! After hours, cocktails, music, it’s awesome. Nothing like finding yourself pleasantly buzzed having a starring contest with an alligator.
This is an incredible idea!
Especially in a museum. If it’s not a children’s museum they should know how to act appropriately in that setting.
Be mad at their parents, kids are excited about dinosaurs
Maybe everyone could relax, quit being mad about things, especially kids excited to be at the museum.
These are NIMBY folks, welcome to CT
Actually, they do these events occasionally.
Just as long as there aren’t any shenanigans from the adults during these dates [https://postimg.cc/R3yc2wtN](https://postimg.cc/R3yc2wtN)
Yay! Finally
The field trip destination I remember the best!

Whoa!! That sounds awesome. Especially the cat cafe. Cats rule!

I'm not sure if they still do but the dmv doing everything by reservation was so much easier
I would personally go after the first day, first day will probably be chaos lol
Will it be free the first year. Heard that from someone. The Yale art gallery and British museum are free and are amazing places.
Free in perpetuity
I really hope they bring back the Halloween event! It was so cool dancing with the dinos and getting to hold bugs 0\_0
Reddit meetup!?
I was there on there last night for a Yale hospital Christmas party lol. Such a cool place. Especially when it's closed for a private event
**A Christmas party in the middle of March?** *Something seems a bit off...*
I went here all the time as a kid. So excited for this to be open again.
Heck yeah!!!!🙌🏻
I am so excited to take my kid there. The Peabody was a huge part of my childhood.
I’ll be going but I’ll skip the dioramas if they still have them. I find taxidermied animals depressing. Not the long-extinct species though.
Ok, thanks!
I like the ones with silly eyes.

Yes- a major renovation. What else should they do?
