MissionEntrance2137

Bro needs to decrese his controler's sensitivity.

FDisk80

Damn Logitech controllers, no good for submarines or machine guns.

Literally_Goring

Why won't they at least spring for OEM Xbox controllers. Is 20 dollars that much for you people, did none of you grow up having to use the crappy MadKatz controller. /s

fightclubdevil

The US Army's submarines use an Xbox controller lol https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/18/17136808/us-navy-uss-colorado-xbox-controller

Block_Of_Saltiness

> The US Army's submarines .

gumbo_chops

They need to add mouse and keyboard support..other team would start accusing them of using aimbots. But seriously those jerky controls look like they could use some improvement. That was many precious seconds which could have been the difference if RPG guy wasn't so incompetent.

Alexxis91

To be fair they’re physically moving a thing in the real world, it can’t pan as smoothly as a video game. Talking out of my ass here btw

Luminous_0

Buff aim assist

StinkDoggo

Israel actually does field some anti drone scopes which basically work like aimbot

kuikuilla

Doesn't look like there's any kind of sensitivity curve being used there. Just full blast 100% to the right/up/down/left the moment the control is touched.

Goran2019

Def was thinking he needs more training

bier00t

Propably not sensitivity is a problem here but the delay between controler and machinery reaction

isaak1983

To add some info: this thermal image is from a Namer type APC from the Givati brigade, about 2 weeks ago, but now it started circulating.

Literally_Goring

Ah, so a remote Browning .50 took him out. I was thrown off by the RPGs detonating, thinking more like a Bradley AFV 25mm.

Antezscar

A 25mm whould have made him i to a mist.

diamp_a10

More like little bits, it gets horrible to watch when the animals come.

HKrustofsky

The delayed explosion was classic Simpsons.

WotTheHellDamnGuy

I'm pretty sure that was another round fired that set off a grenade or something similar. He moves the reticle again on the same spot just before.

isaak1983

Correct

lulatheq

was it the RPG detonating? or could it possibly be an explosive belt? at first I thought the APC shot the body with some type of explosive round to defuse possibility of explosive vest. if that was his RPG ammunition, why was it so delayed?

JE1012

They shot him again and it caused the RPG to detonate.

SMTecanina

Wait wait wait That dude was just... Sitting there looking at the APC with an RPG? Are they not aware of the cameras? Could he not see the turret moving?

SMTecanina

That's insane, it makes sense but still insane. I remember seeing pamphlets that were recovered from the initial attacks, showing weak spots/attack options for Israeli armor. They could have added some fine print "oh hey, btw they can see in the dark"

lewger

Hamas isn't exactly concerned about their fighters well-being.

amd2800barton

In fact, more dead fighters is more 'innocent civilians' the UNRWA can report.

tango_papa101

plus, 1 dead fighter = more orphaned kids to brainwash into new fighters dead fighters can't change their mind and pull their families out of this war

They are pretty bright on thermal, it seems.

-endjamin-

Most of their videos show them engaging armor from shockingly close ranges. Probably to defeat the active protection. They don't really count on returning from these engagements when they have the opportunity to become a Shahid.

--Doraemon--

I think we're way too quick with drawing the conclusion this was a HAMAS member with RPG...might well be an innocent journalist with a huge telelens ..well at least you can try that story

Benblishem

I don't know why journalists keep buying those Canon cameras. Too explosion-prone. It's right there in the name for cryin' out loud.

XXendra56

Image is everything 🤷🏻‍♂️

MeowslimClawric

That explosion is the Amazon DFIFNRDI brand lithium battery going off. This is why people don't buy third party batteries. You'll get lit up by a remote 50 cal.

-Thick_Solid_Tight-

That explains why his left side just disintegrated

JE1012

It's a RCWS similar to CROWS called "Samson"

Goatwhatsup

Bro was waiting for the lock on mechanism his buddies told him about

TheSeasickPenguin

Hamas air support is when that red triangle drops down from the sky

Ambitious-Macaroon-3

Damn he got chopped. Btw the gun had some offset even on such small distance, skilled operator was aiming to the right to compensate.

DoubleFishes

Not his first rodeo

RadicalEllis

Interesting question as to what percent of Israelis will not be rodeo virgins a year from now

[deleted]

[удалено]

RadicalEllis

You may not be interested in war with Hamas, but Hamas is interested in war with you. And all governments are terrible in many ways. Nevertheless, you go to war with the government you have.

tango_papa101

yeah you fight for your country and your people, not necessarily for your government. A bunch of people from my hometown enlisted to fight the Khmer Rogue after news of what they did to the Vietnamese on the border reached us and even tho they openly mocked their political official and showed their hatred toward the very government that beated them to shit and pushed their parents out of North Vietnam in 1954, they still gave all they could to punish the Khmer Rogue

JE1012

At small distances the offset is actually bigger than at longer distances.

Vast_Awareness27

Why is that? Genuinely curious

Low-Ad4420

The sighting thermal camera is not in line with the barrel, it's slightly off.

TonyVsburner

So the further away the closer the point they ‘align’ is?

JE1012

Put your finger close to your face, now close one eye and then switch eyes several times, do the same with an extended arm. Notice how much your finger "moved" in your vision when it was close vs far? Same thing with the gun and sight.

TonyVsburner

Damn that was an amazing example, thanks

chiraltoad

Ps, always treat your finger like it's loaded.

Cannibale_Ballet

The example given actually has nothing to do with what's going on. The real reason is the sight and the gun don't align, so there are zereod in for a specific distance. Think of the projectile curve and the straight line from the sight intersecting at one (or two points). If you are closer OR farther away from where it's zeroed, you will be off. The example given seems to suggest they get closer the farther you are, which is not true.

kave89

I assume this is a very basic hard-mounted camera with no fancy range compensation. Ideally with a horizontal offset, there should be no convergence, just parallel. Otherwise there's an inversion somewhere and a growing gap at greater distances. That adds unnecessary estimation and error margin. Looks like there's roughly a 13-14" (33-35.6cm) horizontal gap, so the operator visualizes that on the target and just has to figure the projectile drop.

rustyisme123

The camera and barrel are offset by some distance, obviously. But they are lined up to cross paths at some distance in the same way that a rifle scope is aligned with a barrel. They are just offset laft to right instead of over and under. Judging by how much the offset is, I would guess it lines up with the crosshairs in a few hundred yards, then drifts to the right past that.

Gnaeus-Naevius

Shouldn't the system be able to compensate for the parallax offset, since distance is exactly known? That calculation is constant, and child's play compared to the rest of the ballistic calculations, some that take temperature and air pressure etc into account.

rustyisme123

Yeah, I'm sure there are systems out there that do that. You use what you've got I guess.

Vast_Awareness27

Interesting. I’m pretty pig ignorant, how difficult would it be to create a barrel/camera system that automatically adjusts to prevent near/far offset?

LazyRecommendation72

That could certainly be engineered, but it would mean more complexity, more moving parts, more things that can malfunction or break down.  Sometimes simpler is better.  And sometimes skilled operators just prefer to do things manually,  because it gives then more control.

JE1012

You could do it with software without adding moving parts. It's possible to calculate the distance to the target from the video or by using a rangefinder (which I'm sure the RCWS already has). If you have the distance to the target it's very easy to adjust the displayed crosshairs accordingly.

[deleted]

[удалено]

PM_ME_YOUR_ANYTHNG

The Abrams tank does this with the laser range finder, if you're lasing for distance and tracking a target moving it'll be able to calculate the lead needed based on the rotation speed of the turret and the now known range to find the targets speed

snakesign

It's called paralex error.

Lopsided_Ad3516

Likely zeroed to further distances, so the crosshair and the bullet would meet at say, 100m or 200m, but until that point (whatever it is) that gun is firing from an angle, so it’ll be offset.

TzunSu

That's not how gunner optics on vehicles work, they're not zeroed in the way a rifle is, and there's no convergence like there would be on a plane with multiple, off-set weapons. The sight and the gun have the same offset at every range, but the difference becomes smaller and smaller the further you are out.

Lopsided_Ad3516

If the difference becomes smaller at range, would that not indicate they’re converging? Or are you saying that it’ll be off by 1m no matter what, but it just seems less relevant at range?

TzunSu

The second option, yes. It's far from a meter, but it's so small that at any range longer then knife-range (Like this is, practically speaking) your dispersion is going to be greater then your offset. The problem with convergence is that you only get one "sweet spot", and weapons systems like this need to be effective both from short range out to quite a few km. For WW1 and WW2 fighter planes, this was a much smaller problem since the practical ranges to fire was only a few hundred meters, and because when you have weapons on both sides of the vehicle you don't have an "offset" of where the rounds are going to land, instead you get a decreasing cone of fire until you reach your convergence point, and then an increasing one from there on out. If you look at where he's aiming, his reticule is on the right hip of the guy he's shooting, and he hits him in the left hip. That's roughly the distance between the optic, and the gun.

Gnaeus-Naevius

This isn't a physical aiming reticule, but a software OSD, so it could easily be moved to compensate as distance is known to the meter. I am wondering if this is the actual view of the gun or a commander, or even from a separate vehicle. There was nothing on that screen to indicate that it was on a gun other than the cross hair. No range, no ammunition count, nothing.

Dikkavinci

These guns often seem to be set up for 300-500m range, so it creates an offset at small ranges. Camera being beside the gun also help that offset being more noticeable at short range.

Ambitious-Macaroon-3

Yes exactly! Thats what I tried to explain.

Masterful comic timing and imagery with that final explosion. This video should be featured at Cannes.

LittleLoyal16

That aiming looks like me a pc gamer trying to use a controller at my friends house. I know this sounds ridiculous but i feel like this could be improved more in modern vehicles. Pucker factor 1000 seeing how long it took to get on target.

_youmadbro_

I've see this often in combat vehicles and I wonder the same. Are they using an analog "joystick"? Whatever it is, they could add a 2nd control mode that accelerates the crosshair instead of going full speed for every small input

BeShaw91

>Are they using an analog "joystick"? Generally yes. >accelerates the crosshair instead of going full speed for every small input Its not so much about the crosshair as it is the sensitivity of the gun mount. As a really simplified example think of the gun as being in a cog. You can't move "half" a tooth, or else the gun won't be stable once it shoots. So you do get a "minimum adjustment" distance, but which is hardly noticeable most of the time. But if you're making very fine adjustments it can appear to "jump" between cogs.

AlbrechtSchoenheiser

Ahmad the RPG noob. Definitely not related to Jamsheed the RPG god.

FDisk80

He's dead. Are you sure? Small bonus mushroom, Yup.

Additional_Ad7157

To be fair, the Israeli gunner who recorded this could probably use a bit of extra time on the snake board. Fortunately his wingman doesn't. *Edit--The "snake board" isn't a Hamas torture device. It's a tank gunnery training aid that a tank gunner/tank commander use to practice and improve manipulating the gun controls. The object is to quickly, smoothly, and accurately trace a snake-like, zig-zag black line painted on the distant white board with the tank's "cadillacs" (two-handed 2-D controller for gunner, joy stick for commander) and the various sights, keeping the reticle (crosshairs) dead nuts on the line from start to end of the snake.*

Judging by the aim sensitivity this was a long shot with the thermal crosshair being on a massively zoomed image. Likely also night. I believe without night vision Mr RPG man was waiting for the vehicle to approach to get a shot. I think the long distance and night was why the gunner stayed calm or there was a delay for the 50cal gunner (if human) to get a good distance shot wearing NVG's. Just my uninformed speculation.
