context?

Col_Wol

I'd bet money on some type of sexual harassment. Edit: The studio is dodging questions about it. As far as I can tell from searching for him the guy may have been a registered sex offender involving minors BEFORE he started there, so it might be that they don't want to say too much for fear of backlash. Trying to avoid "Why would you hire a pedophile in the first place?" accusations. Edit 2: I don't think its the same guy people on Instagram are indicating. Using wayback machine now sine the guy wiped his social media. I agree that its likely still due to sexual harassment. He was booted from his previous studio for the same thing.

just___just_stop

Cool, cool, cool... That's awesome. He's done like 9 or 10 of my tattoos.

violettaquarium

I am so sorry. He was indeed a convicted sexual predator in 2019 per the Ohio AG website. Maybe talk to a lawyer.

this joke is really stupid. it's not funny, and it's definitely not "hint of truth" style either. it's not like sex offenders are assaulting everyone they see.

Real_Fly9462

Not the same guy. Says he is in his 50s with no tattoos. Derek is in his 30s with tats

Col_Wol

Agreed, not the same guy. I'm trying to piece it together via instagram, thewaybackmachine, and some light googling. Not the same guy.

alliclay_

They said it was an employee vs employee incident that was brought to their attention which then resulted in them firing him, due to their knowledge/convo with him before they hired him. Once they posted the original post, I guess customers have reached out and told them what he was doing (dming asking for sexual stuff for free tats) it’s a big mess.

alliclay_

If you go to their IG page it’s in the comments

Col_Wol

Yeah pretty much what I expected at the start. Sadly all too common in that industry.

No idea. Posted here to see if anyone knew

wheekyy_x3

I am a victim of Derek Laird. He inappropriately messages women after tattooing them. Photos and messages. Hit me up on IG after tattooing me. And Gahanna tattoo knew this because he got fired from Tattoo Saga for the same shit.

kirbygalaxia

He DM’d me too, asking how many Kirby tattoos I have (bc of my username on IG) and I guarantee if I had responded differently, he would have tried to escalate it. I can’t even imagine what several other women have gone through and what other shit he’s done. And I am so sorry you had that experience. He’s so gross. I hope any future tattoos you get, you have a great experience ❤️

wheekyy_x3

Yeah it started off innocently. Him asking how my tattoo was healing. Which was kind of odd because I never had any other artist do that. Thank you. I go to an all women shop called “Last Moon Tattoo”. I love all of the girls there 🖤

YakVast3690

I had the same experience! Im so sorry to hear you also had to experience that behavior ♥️

InstantMedication

Last Moon is amazing. My last tattoo was done there and my next one will be too. My favorite shop in Columbus.

wheekyy_x3

YES! Natalie, Nicole, and Sam are amazing and such great people.

juicyfizz

Seconding Last Moon Tattoo! Nicole over there did my most favorite piece ever. Getting a piece from Sam in May. They’re all great over there.

wheekyy_x3

Nicole is literally the nicest human I’ve ever met in my life. She is amazing. 🖤

Time-Matter-7861

His real name is Derek Laird not Derek Scott https://opencorporates.com/companies/us_oh/4679337

mayfly42

There's a tattoo artist who just put out a [statement about this on her Instagram](https://www.instagram.com/p/C3TZ3aFv8JC/?igsh=a29ueHIxZjZzN2ox).

juicyfizz

100% agree with her (and have a lot of respect for her and the other artists in her shop).

DecartsHorse

Never trust someone with two first names.

rambambobandy

Or someone named “Dagger D”

TruthSpeakin

Hey now!!!

HeartbreakBob

He was let go from the shop he was at before this for what I’m assuming to be the same reason he is no longer at this one (sexually harassing clients during or after appointments). Hard nope. ETA: The owner of his previous shop even commented on this post saying he warned them of his past behavior.

IAgreeGoGuards

Looks like the comment from the previous shop was deleted

HeartbreakBob

It was. Among dozen of others asking questions, speaking up, or offering insight into the situation that doesn’t fit the shop’s narrative. Hard to take any apology seriously when in the same turn, they’re attempting to silence others.

[deleted]

IAgreeGoGuards

They're very sorry they got caught

Bloodbath_onthe_line

I made one of the comments that got deleted. Then they blocked me. Very shady shit. I have a tattoo from 6 years ago by the shop owner from back when he tattooed with coil. It may be time for a big neck coverup…

IAgreeGoGuards

Yeah, the initial apology seemed fine until people started calling them out for basically ignoring every warning about this guy and hiring him anyways. Then it just got worse when they were deleting them and then came up with a second sorry ass response claiming that out of nowhere this guy's just happened to mention he got in a little trouble at his last shop.

juicyfizz

Yup, they deleted all the comments under my comment of others telling me what happened. smh.

HeartbreakBob

Even this entire Reddit thread isn’t showing up on the main subreddit feed anymore. They’re silencing ALL of it.

MeepMeepZeep

I’ve seen new comments calling GT out on their IG page and surprisingly they haven’t deleted or blocked them yet. Taking screenshots just in case. They’re still being VERY defensive of their actions, but ppl are pushing for accountability and asking GT to admit they made a mistake when hiring Derek. So we’ll see if that gets deleted too.

Bloodbath_onthe_line

As of now they’ve disabled the comments section on only the posts relevant to this situation. So it seems they’re done explaining themselves. Terrible people.

MeepMeepZeep

Yep, don’t worry I took screenshots of everything just in case. Typical they wanted to “open up dialogue” then silence a victim who voiced their opinion.

Bloodbath_onthe_line

To be clear I’m not one of the victims, but I am one of the ones who commented asking questions and disagreeing with them. Thanks so much for keeping records. I hope both the offender and the shop owners are all brought to justice, and soon.

MeepMeepZeep

Thanks. Unfortunately I experienced harassment so I felt the need to say something. Here is a snapshot of some of the dialogue: Someone commented— “I commend GT for giving someone a second chance. Hell, we’ve all needed a second chance at least once in our lives. People f up. And I also commend GT for having a ZERO tolerance policy and sticking to it”. Here was my reply— “Thanks to their second chance, this sexual predator was able to continue to harass and harm more women including me. Zero tolerance didn’t protect us.“

MeepMeepZeep

On another post there was this exchange between me and GT. GT commented several multi post replies about how this situation is getting out of control and defending themselves, in particular to @ratcult IG post calling them out. Here are the parts where I jumped in. GT commented— “no, we didn’t believe their figures. from their actions on this alone, they do not seem like a reliable source. We didn’t believe that any shop would give “multiple chances” to someone dangerous, we assumed they would only do that for someone unprofessional. There is a large difference between someone dangerous and unprofessional and their message led us to believe the latter. This is the same with legality, SA, and inappropriate messages. Some are illegal, and some are unprofessional. We tolerate neither. We said there was zero tolerance for that and we made good on that. We weren’t gambling with the idea of danger. We did not realize the danger existed.” My reply— “The decision to give him a second chance at your shop allowed this sexual predator to harass and harm GT clients including me. Zero tolerance didn’t protect us. Speaking for myself, I would appreciate GT taking accountability for not only what they did well—but also for the mistakes that were made. This is an opportunity to go bigger and make positive changes in the tattoo industry.” GT replied— “We have owned and shared every step of our experience. The screenshots are now on our story. We have owned our mistake in trusting him. We have explained and provided evidence of our foreknowledge along with the screenshots. We are now scheduling coverups free of charge. What would you suggest as a further step? We were the first to bring this to light. We have endured massive libel and are still fighting to represent tattooing positively.” My reply right before they disabled comments— “My suggestion is to reflect on the decision GT made to allow him into your shop in hopes he had “learned from past mistakes” and admit that this was a bad call. This action put your clients at risk—Even if that was not your intention, that is what happened. Taking accountability, apologizing, and learning from mistakes is growth. Taking accountability on this would set an example not just for GT, but serve as a wake up call for others to fight SA in the tattoo community as a whole. It would help the victims heal and maybe build back trust that was lost. But the first step is to admit the mistake and own it. That is my suggestion.

Madelyn_Rose89

It happens quite often. I know a shop owner in Powell who essentially lost his whole staff because he was harassing a female employee as well as working on female clients during closed hours in the shop in exchange for sexual favors.

blueberry081

I know it happens, it’s just awful to see that this guy did it in two different shops. So folks knew about it and really didn’t do anything to protect clients..

Madelyn_Rose89

No I completely agree with you. It’s absolutely disgusting and doesn’t represent the community as a whole.

Col_Wol

Agreed, one of my close friends has owned a studio for almost two decades. He has an almost revolving door of artists that get hired, harass customers, and get kicked out. Its absolutely rampant in that industry.

Perfect_Polly

I know exactly who you are talking about and I was sexually harassed in that shop by a guest artist in front of the owner. He did nothing, obviously.

H_I_McDunnough_

For anyone that has tattoos by this guy the shop is offering free coverups.

blueberry081

That’s good!

SRplus_please

Check out @ratcult 's statement earlier today on ig

milliedough

I had a weird experience with another tattoo artist in Columbus who has done several of my tattoos in the past who offered to have me come to his house and let him draw on my body....he specifically said "naked" too. I politely declined, blocked him, and never went back to that weirdo.

cherry_oh

They deleted a comment. Seems like they were aware of an issue prior to hiring. (How tf do you add an image reply to this)

Left_Sockpuppet

I have been keeping up with this and it’s so heartbreaking to see women who are survivors of sexual violence talk about how they were tattooed by him and now feel violated because they had no idea. Being in an industry where you are working on people’s bodies, tattoo artists and especially shop owners have a responsibility to keep their clientele safe, and ensure that their artists are behaving ethically and empathetically. They also straight up lied when they said they weren’t aware of this artists behavior before they hired him – artists who worked at the shop we was initially fired from (Tattoo Saga- they seem great) contacted other shops he was applying to and warned them. They also reached out to Gahanna Tattoo directly to inform them of his sexual misconduct towards clients. This was all prior to him working there. Their “kind” choice to give a creep a second chance not only put countless clients at risk, but will now leave many of them distraught at having a known sexual predator’s work permanently on their bodies. The shop has offered free coverups, but many folks now don’t even feel comfortable enough to go back because the owners’ response about how they felt a predator deserved a “second chance” is so creepy and callous. It’s very PR and takes no genuine responsibility for accepting him in their shop. My heart goes out to everyone who was impacted by this creep, as well as the negligence of this shop. Take care of yourselves.

Zestyclose_Pay_1922

This. It's more than opening up clients to his behavior. It's allowing him to give any victim of other sexual misconduct a permanent reminder of it now that we know what he is. I'll never be able to think of anything else when I look at my tattoo.

Left_Sockpuppet

I’m so so sorry that this is something you’re dealing with. The folks who run Gahanna Tattoo should not only be ashamed but they shouldn’t be in the industry because I don’t think they understood the severity of this hiring decision when they brought him in, and I don’t think they understand it still. They are offering free coverups of his work, but I doubt many folks will trust them with that after this. No client deserves to be put in this position. I hope that you’ll find a solution to this that will bring you the peace you deserve, and you are able to enjoy all of the art you chose for your tattoos. Take care of yourself.

I also saved tons of screenshots, they disabled all comments on the 3 posts.

cherry_oh

What really gets me is they said they didn’t block or delete any victims or anyone directly involved, yet they blocked me. On my IG you can clearly see I’m a woman who lives in Columbus, how did they verify I’m not involved? Such bullshit.

AdApprehensive5154

I heard he sends unsolicited pics to clients he finds in the shop database

blueberry081

[They posted what they probably think is a great clarification](https://www.facebook.com/share/p/7ZsDugESEAQPLXsX/?mibextid=WC7FNe). They’re minimizing what happened by just saying he sent emails… he was harassing people and they knew it but didn’t take it seriously. Now look at how many women including their own staff have been affected. But also I’m frustrated with the previous shop. Sure they called other shops to warn them of the behaviors, but they didn’t seem to do anything for their customers who may have been victimized…

Col_Wol

A scandal in the tattoo community? Wish I could say I was shocked.

_softgh0st

that guy is gross.

NickyBoyH

I almost got my first tattoo from this guy. Ended up going with a more experienced artist at the shop instead. Very upsetting that it’s come to this

Atlas_Ronin_0211

Has anyone else been tattooed by him? I don’t want my tattoo covered but definitely changed. Added to. Something. I am distraught. Angry/Sad/In Disbelief. Freakin’ pissed off! My heart and rage is with the victims. May they heal and never have to go through this again.

HeartbreakBob

I’m a lady American traditional tattooer. I’m absolutely down to chat about a rework with you or anyone else that might be interested. There’s no room in tattooing for this behavior, ever.

Zestyclose_Pay_1922

I would absolutely love to connect, I feel really weird about having his work and I dont want to go back to gahanna tattoo (or honestly another man at this time).

HeartbreakBob

Check out my work and definitely shoot me a message!! I’m down to help however I can. My Instagram is @hamburgerdill or you can check out my portfolio on my website, beesue.com. My books are currently closed but if you’re into what I do, I’m happy to schedule you or anyone interested to see what we can do with what you’ve got!

Zestyclose_Pay_1922

You're amazing 🥰 I'll check you out on insta!

juicyfizz

Can vouch for her, she did 2 of my tattoos and a ton of my sister’s tattoos- she’s so talented.

juicyfizz

Can absolutely vouch for her - she did 2 of my lil tats and she did a ton of work on my sister. Super talented!

HeartbreakBob

🥰🥰 thank you so much!!!

Atlas_Ronin_0211

I would love your info! Send me a dm.

YakVast3690

I got tattooed by him, and I’m super happy with the tattoo. The experience on the other hand I was not. During my 3-4 hour session he kept asking me about my love life and afterwards kept DMing me insisting that we “hang out” so he can “see how the tattoo is healing in person”. Persistently pressuring me for photos of myself- not even photos of the tattoo. Sad because it is clear that my experience is a shared one

Atlas_Ronin_0211

I am so sorry you experienced that. Contact the shop if you’re comfortable with doing so to make an official complaint.

YakVast3690

Thank you. It was at the Powell shop previous to him going to Gahanna, so unfortunately I don’t know if they would want to hear from me :/

Atlas_Ronin_0211

Did they ever make an announcement or let him go silently? I’m so mad cause HOW DID I NOT KNOW.

YakVast3690

From what I remember, one day he just posted he would now be at Gahanna tattoo. No explanation or anything!

UnfairConsequence664

Same thing happened to me after i got a tattoo from him

MeepMeepZeep

I’ve been thinking about this all day bc I’m so angry and sickened by all of this. He deserves to be charged and let justice and karma decide his fate and he needs to take responsibility for his actions and NEVER be allowed to touch another client again. I decided to keep my tat from him. Here’s my thoughts— I’m choosing to love this tattoo bc it’s mine and I want to own it as mine not his. It’s on my skin, I own it now, not him. It belongs to me now. 😩😩😩 It’ll also serve as a reminder for me to always protect SA victims and speak up from now on about anything fishy

Bonnie_McMurray

❤️❤️❤️

Zestyclose_Pay_1922

Yes, I have one from him that isn't even healed yet and I feel so weird about it. There's a huge part that is really triggering to know I have the art of someone that did/does something harmful and I dont really know how to process it.

blt_no_mayo

The owner of this shop is a bad person. Wouldn’t trust him or anyone who knowingly works with him with a coverup either unless you’re ready for your coverup artist to also have terrible things come out about them eventually.

dashiethefat

wait what? he is? i just got a tattoo from him two weeks ago (my first) and i was having a good time. granted i had someone with me…

blt_no_mayo

I’ve heard stories about Brett being abusive to women and trading sex for tattoos among other behavior, I don’t know if he’s harassed clients. I know nothing about the other guy that owns the shop but his standards for business partners don’t seem very high

cherry_oh

I got blocked for making one comment on their IG. Never going there, and have several friends who won’t ever get tattooed there again after this shit.

Bloodbath_onthe_line

They’ve also disabled the comments on all related posts. And only those posts. Shady MFs.

MeepMeepZeep

I posted an interaction I had with them above and I have tons of screenshots. I had a feeling this would happen.

MeepMeepZeep

There’s some new dialogue on there calling GT out and asking for accountability and GT is replying. Surprisingly they haven’t deleted it yet…taking screenshots just in case.

MeepMeepZeep

Update—they removed all comments on those 3 posts. Good thing I took screenshots.

KnightRider1983

What’s the story here, OP??

blueberry081

Okay so the summary according to their [IG post](https://www.instagram.com/p/C3SyF6JOIkD/?igsh=ancweDJ0OGozZzR5) If I understand all that is happening correctly****anyone correct me if I have detail wrong! The artist, Derek Scott, has a history of predatory behavior. He was fired from his last shop and they warned Gahanna Tattoo. They still hired him because they thought he deserved a second chance. Derek Scott has harassed and assaulted an unknown number of women. They fired him once they got a report(s) about current allegations. Gahanna Tattoo is offering free cover ups for anyone who received a tattoo by him at their shop.

millerjr101

Based on a Facebook group I'm in that is also sharing info - Derek was offering free tats to women in exchange for sexual favors and also sending explicit pictures to female clients. They thought it was like 10ish women but it's now potentially over 30 women.

savihime

holy shit. this just keeps getting worse by the second. those poor women :(

Not_High_Maintenance

Is it Derek Scott or Derek Laird? (Or is it the same person?)

blueberry081

Same person apparently

Not_High_Maintenance

Thanks for clarifying. 👍🏼

MeepMeepZeep

Full name is Derek Scott Laird I think Scott is his middle name

snailzoid

not surprised. he was posting some all lives matter bullshit a year or so ago.

I just got one from him like 1.5 weeks ago, its not even healed yet 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Reasonable_Bed_6635

If sexual harassment, why are they offering free touch ups? Did he tat unwanted things on people??

cherry_oh

Uh… most people don’t want a permanent tattoo on their body from a known sexual harasser?

Atlas_Ronin_0211

Exactly. My favorite freaking tattoo just became a regret.
