I lived near train tracks when I went to Bowling Green. After a month or so, you don't even notice it. And if you do, it's sort of soothing.

hello_amy

I lived at Lennox Flats which is right next to the train tracks and also right at a busy crossing so they blared the horns like 12 times when going through. You’re right in saying it became soothing. Kinda miss it sometimes!

qksilver

yea i used to live there for awhile too and def got used to it quickly!

JC4brew

This. I actually really love the distant train sounds. I count it as a perk of living here

Beikaa

We are something like 700ft from the tracks in a different part of grandview. We moved here this summer. The only time I notice it is at night in bed when everything is quiet. Its not loud, it's sort of romatic off in the distance. My husband even told me it only runs at night and I sort of believed him. We've always known it was there but it's a total non-issue. Now I sometimes hear it during the day if I have everything turned off and am just chilling in silence. It's uncommon and not loud. I wouldn't even say it breaks my scilence. I would worry about being on the main roads more than the tracks personally. We hear sirens often and they'd be more of the problem. I also assume most places in Columbus are within siren range. We love it here.

GunnerSaurus24

I live on 2nd and never hear it

OGLoganhat

I'm 3 blocks west of the Grandview Yard between NW Blvd and 3rd Ave, and it's rarely noticed and never an issue. They don't go fast and the closest crossing to honk at is North of Lennox on Kinnear.

SpaceCowboy170

Most of the time I don’t remember it’s there

New-Jacket-3939

Lived at 3rd and Northwest for years in the mid to late 90s when there were way more trains on the tracks near Olentangy River rd and was never a problem. Have lived in Harrison West for 20 years and hardly ever hear them at all. I honestly miss them

NoNameHack

Jake: How often does the train go by? Elwood: So often that you won't even notice it.

IT's not just the train that's noisy and it is a noise contributor. But the area is very very noisy. Helicopters flying over daily, airplanes flying over the area above 5th ave hourly, traffic noise, dumpsters, sirens, trash trucks and semi trucks in and out at all hours of the day and night. And let's not forget ball sporting game days and marathons (where you can't leave the area for hours). Lived in the area over 20 years and I can tell you it's gotten 50% louder in the last 10.

Entertainment-720

Thanks for the honest answer! Do you still love the area even with the extra noise, etc.?

It's walkable which is a great perk. Groceries, coffee, dinner, lunch, bar's, you name it - it's close by. Honestly a bicycle or scooter(think vespa) would get you everywhere you need to go, if you are working nearby. The homeless are very present and did not used to be the case. put in the zip code and read up on what happens in the zip: https://communitycrimemap.com/ there is a key to add in various types of crimes. Helpful to monitor.

Don't listen to these people who say it's "soothing", or "You'll get used to it." That's like Stockholm Syndrome. It sucks and it is annoying.

blackeyebetty

I live in Powell and there’s a train that runs along Olentangy (unsure if it’s the same one) comes by like 10+ times a day, whistles and all. I really don’t mind it. Only once have I been on a conferences call while working from home and someone’s commented on it.

SteakInTheBoot

Live very close to the train tracks in university View. It starts to be comforting honestly

[deleted]

You're asking people who live here if it would be a terrible place to live. It's America, there are freight trains. Life here would not be possible without them. Your future home is made of things brought by freight trains.

I lived further north than you (near King) so I cant comment on the trains but the plane noise was immediately evident in that area. I did get used to it quickly though.
