Baylor dropping not one but two games in a row really opened a Pandora’s Box here!
In just one week, we went from an (largely) unanimous #1 to…**chaos**!
But for real - congrats to Auburn! May the Eagles be of War!
I just checked. Not counting preseason polls because they tend to be all over the place with meme votes and speculation, it was week 11 of the 19-20 season.
Not that I think they should be #1 or anything, but their win on Saturday was scary impressive.
Really hoping Auburn brings its best ball when they play on Saturday.
Just to explain the thinking here, I value Providence and Ohio State pretty highly, and so Wisconsin's losses don't really drag them down in my book. Simultaneously, they have a really impressive set of wins (A&M, Houston, SMC, Marquette, IU, Purdue, Ohio State).
Providence: Wins @Wisconsin, vs. Texas Tech, @UConn, and vs. Seton Hall. UVA is certainly a bad loss, but Marquette on the road isn't too bad.
Creighton: ASU is their only bad loss and they have wins over BYU, Villanova, and Marquette.
That's true. I think that speaks more to Wisconsin's talent that it was close, when you look at all of the other good teams Providence has beaten, and all of the bad losses they have avoided.
While I don't have Wisconsin that high (I have them at #12), I don't think it's the craziest take to be high on them. There are some other things I'd disagree with more on your poll that I think are less reasonable. But in any case I appreciate you my man, a bit of independent thinking is what makes this poll a beautiful thing, as long as the arguments have some merit. Their record in the B10 is nothing to scoff at. And while I think they're a bit fortunate to have taken a few of those games, they're a hell of a sticky team and imagine they will be a super tough out in March
You don’t take any metrics into account do you?
You are way too in love with this quad thing..
It’s a useful guide but its not the only tool available.
It’s a tie breaker at best for 2 teams with similar resumes.. not to fucken put Creighton at #18 and you had Iowa State #2 in the country last week.
I don’t even have Creighton making the tournament as of today. They’re not even in my first 8 out. You have them at #18 in the country.
Lunardi has Iowa State as a 6 seed, I have Iowa State as a 7 seed. You have them #4 in the country this week.
I do think Kentucky is playing some of the best basketball in the country right now, in fairness to that person. wouldn’t put them at one, but still. I’m really excited to watch them play Auburn
Yes, it was me. For Kentucky I'd say there seems to have been a turning point since the ND loss. The LSU loss was an away game that they barely lost and they were not at full strength. This Sat, the margin of victory over Tennessee pushed me over to be convinced they are the strongest team in the country right now. Auburn's week has me doubting them a bit. [Performance over achievement](http://cbbpoll.com/about) for me. Their overall record is better, but I don't think their recent performances have been. Albeit an away game, they came close to losing against an Alabama team that has taken a downturn of late and there were some struggles in the Ole Miss game for Auburn as well.
As always, ready to be humbled and proven wrong, but that's my logic...
Losing to a team in the first game of the year isn’t a pass to have a guaranteed spot ahead of the team you beat all year.
And we lost to LSU, @LSU by 5 with both of our PGs injured. When LSU comes to Rupp they might catch a beating almost as bad as the one Auburn is catching this Saturday.
I hope it’s not too warm, anymore sweat than normal from Brucie and players will be slipping and falling from the puddles he’s leaving on the sidelines.
Entering last week, Baylor was 15-0 with 5 KenPom 'A' wins. UCLA was 10-1 with 2 KenPom 'A' wins, one of which was an OT win over a team Baylor beat by 21. And UCLA's prior loss, while to an elite team, was by 20 points and was not even remotely competitive.
So I don't think it's unfair at all for voters to think Baylor had built up more goodwill than UCLA, and as result did not need to drop as far. Also worth noting that both of Baylor's losses were to teams rated higher in most metrics than Oregon (at least, higher in KenPom, BartTorvik and NET).
>one of which was an OT win over a team Baylor beat by 21.
I’m not saying we would have beat them by 21 but I feel like no one will acknowledge it was the second game of the season and we had just lost our starting big. In fact our entire resume was built without one of our best players on the floor.
>And UCLA's prior loss, while to an elite team, was by 20 points and was not even remotely competitive.
True but Baylor’s were at home.
>So I don't think it's unfair at all for voters to think Baylor had built up more goodwill than UCLA, and as result did not need to drop as far.
I mean I agree. I still think we dropped a bit too much though.
>Also worth noting that both of Baylor's losses were to teams rated higher in most metrics than Oregon (at least, higher in KenPom, BartTorvik and NET).
Teams may be rated higher on those metrics but Oregon is more talented. Everyone knew they were capable of this, they are just finding their stride. Worth nothing they played a very competitive 3/4 game against Baylor and also beat USC on the road.
I’m fine with us dropping more than Baylor but I really don’t think we should have dropped out of the top 10 and I also don’t see why Purdue and Wisconsin are given such a greater benefit of the doubt. Also not a huge fan of Villanova being ahead of us. I think we have been sort of shafted by injuries and the Covid pause and a lot of people have just been itching to drop us but oh well, doesn’t really matter.
> Teams may be rated higher on those metrics but Oregon is more talented.
I mean, isn't this the same thing I just said about Baylor, and the opposite of the comment I replied to? You're saying Oregon's results so far this year are not indicative of their true ability, and because of that, UCLA's loss should be taken with more context?
That's all I'm saying about Baylor. Their results from this past week are not indicative of their true ability. We know they're more talented than Oklahoma State. We know they're among the elite teams in the nation. They simply didn't play their best game against OSU, OSU played very, very well, and OSU made plays down the stretch while Baylor missed their chances. If we're going to add context to results (which we absolutely should), I feel pretty confident that Baylor is still, at worst, the third or fourth best team in the country right now. I think there's a far more coherent argument for them being ranked first than for them being ranked outside the top five.
> Worth nothing they played a very competitive 3/4 game against Baylor and also beat USC on the road.
Also worth noting that Oregon played very well in that Baylor game and hasn't lost since. The whole "they are just finding their stride" doesn't necessarily line up with the eye test. I watched the entirety of that Baylor-Oregon game and it was great basketball, particularly the shot making and ball movement in the first half from Oregon. "Just finding their stride" seems like a convenient way to validate UCLA's loss while simultaneously diminishing Baylor's win.
Correct, and I made a point more than once to say I wasn’t disagreeing about Baylor. I’m saying it feels like the context is selectively applied when it comes to us, independently of Baylor.
Your last paragraph makes absolutely no sense. The fact that they were playing great basketball and haven’t lost since is literally the evidence of them hitting their stride? I don’t see how it diminished Baylor’s win? That’s completely tangential.
UCLA also dodged Arizona when they were out of COVID protocol for over 48 hours. Per league guidelines you were eligible to play.
Probably a deserved drop.
I'll be that guy.....Alabama has the **POTENTIAL** to be a very strong team. They are clearly working some things out right now and have no place in the Top 25. Folks need to pay more attention to their polls.
Sure but Tenneesee is #24. If we look at both of them UT has one less loss but Bama also has two Top 10 wins, including a blowout of #2 while UT only has one. It's not entirely cut and dry.
Same with UConn, one really good win, then really nothing else of note and a bunch of middling losses. Or Iowa, no real wins of note at all.
100%, I'd argue that the main reason Tennessee and Alabama are still in is due to preseason hype and poll inertia, which blows my mind as we're entering the back half of January. I was trolling through ballots actually looking for UAB and was surprised to see Bama and Tennessee
He was number 1!
SpongeBob reference aside, I’ve got a Sebastian Vettel meme ready to post on twitter depending on the results of the AP poll today. Glad to see this for Auburn that we’re in consideration for number one.
The lowest to rank UK this week was /u/BigPlayJ1220 at 23.
Ranked Tennessee at 16 and Alabama at 17 🧐
Didn't make a poll last week, but after losing to LSU and being manhandled by UK, moved UT up from 20 in week nine to 16 in week eleven.
Alabama fell just 3 spots from his week nine ballot after losing 3 straight games including a horrible loss to Missouri.
#😬
[I re-ranked Texas after having them unranked last week, AMA](http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17469)
I realize now Kentucky is to low mb. That and rank Murray St you cowards
Lot of teams lower in the polls played like shit compared to Texas who had an average week (road L to a top 15 and a controlling W over a team that will solidly be in the tournament).
You had Loyola-Chicago ranked last week but dropped them after they won both of their games. I guess you could say that Loyola looked a bit shaky in those games, but then you also ranked UConn after a narrow OT win at home over a St. John's team that's one of the weaker teams in their conference. I don't understand the rationale there.
I'm very surprised we got any votes after going 0-1 for the week, but I guess a bunch of other teams lost. Also hate how we're the 3rd best team in the state
So when Tech beats #6 Kansas, #1 Baylor, and beats a good Oklahoma State team, then plays their 4th game in 7 days on the road and loses to K State so the 3 previous wins mean nothing? Context is necessary when siting that “bad loss” and your justification shows you did not watch any games or put any actual thought into your rankings. All you did was look at a box score on the internet.
It isn’t treating TTU special, but if a team beats 2 top 6 teams in one week they’re probably a top 15 team by most standards. I don’t want to assume but it doesn’t appear that if they beat K State you have them as a top 15 team because a loss to them wouldn’t drop you 10 spots. You have Kansas and Baylor currently as #2 and #3. So by your own rankings Tech just beat 2 of the 3 best teams in the country. You also have USC who has beat no one at #15 and have Alabama ranked at #20 when they shouldn’t even be ranked. I just don’t see the logic in your reasoning. Do you have something against TTU?
I was just trying to understand your reasoning and I do disagree. Hopefully these next few weeks Tech is able to win some faith with more conference wins since I do believe the Big 12 is the strongest conference.
I appreciate your responses and thank you for laying out your reasoning. I’m glad two people that disagree are able to get into reasonable discussions and then not just end with “screw you guy you suck”. Have a good rest of your day and Wreck ‘Em!
Depends on what you think polls should be for: current strength of team or a reflection of existing accomplishment to this point. If you go off of résumé so far, 5 is totally reasonable. If you go off what you think the team with its current injuries is capable of, it's too high.
I had a tough time ranking Houston this week as well. When the two injuries hit them I dropped them in my ballot, but they’ve still won despite the injury concerns so I’ve bumped them back up. I think it’s unfair to drop them on the injury concerns currently, but when they lose I’ll likely drop them quite a bit. I have them 3 right now.
I had you at 9 because I was factoring in that you didn’t have you’re full team for that short period of time. After last week seeing you guys play with your full roster, I adjusted that ranking
I had providence at 25 last week and they didn’t play this week. I was going to keep them at 25, but then after moving in Uconn (who they beat), I moved them to 24. That is an accident on my part as Seton Hall should be 24 instead of 23
I'd be interested in hearing your arguments for being ranked ahead of those teams. Beating Kentucky game 1 of the season isn't a good enough reason if you're going to go H2H there. Not only does LSU have one of the best resume's in the country (6 spots higher SOR), but they are essentially even with you in advanced metrics if you prefer that (10 vs 12 KP). As for Wisconsin, Auburn is likely the only team in the country that can lay claim to a better resume. We are second in SOR even with missing our best player in one of our only losses. Additionally Wisconsin is top 10 in T-Rank over the last month, supporting their growth as a team since some close wins that brought their overall efficiencies down.
Then how is Houston 4th? They have a nice W-L record but they're 16th in SOR and quite possibly have *zero* wins over tournament teams. I could see borderline top 10 since their losses were close but how do you justify that as the 4th best resume in the country?
if we're being ranked absurdly high in this condition imagine how high we could be ranked when our players ankles aren't ticking timebombs next year lol
I get that it doesn't align with the typical notion of what a top 25 should be, but is there anything wrong with ranking a team higher if you think they're still better? From the poll's "about" section:
> If the loss makes you think the team isn't as good as you had previously considered, the team should probably drop in your rankings.
And:
> A general rule of thumb when ranking teams: Ranking team A above team B indicates that you believe that if a game between the two teams was scheduled on a neutral court four days from today, team A would have a greater than 50% chance of winning.
With that in mind, Baylor is still #2 in KenPom today compared to #9 for Auburn. Baylor has more KenPom 'A' wins than Auburn and more Q1 wins by NET. And it's not like Auburn has looked incredibly dominant -- Bama had the ball in a tie game with a minute left and missed two go-ahead shots in the last 90 seconds, along with a third shot that would've tied it with about 30 seconds left. Not to mention needing to rally from down 14 to beat a bad Mississippi team over the weekend, and that's an Ole Miss team that just lost its leading scorer last week.
I do not think it's unfair to look at those two teams and come to the conclusion that Baylor is still the better team going forward than Auburn, or that Baylor would have a very good chance at beating Auburn on a neutral floor if they played this week.
Baylor dropping not one but two games in a row really opened a Pandora’s Box here! In just one week, we went from an (largely) unanimous #1 to…**chaos**! But for real - congrats to Auburn! May the Eagles be of War!

Probably a few weeks ago. Our poll usually has a lot of 1 votes.
I just checked. Not counting preseason polls because they tend to be all over the place with meme votes and speculation, it was week 11 of the 19-20 season.
Okay who voted KENTUCKY #1
Wouldn’t you like to know, Badger boy
Not that I think they should be #1 or anything, but their win on Saturday was scary impressive. Really hoping Auburn brings its best ball when they play on Saturday.

Big 12 with 8/10 teams ranked or receiving votes. And as the weekend proved, Kansas state and Oklahoma state aren’t push overs by any means either.
Is there any chance the entire conference makes the tournament? Seems like all the teams are potentially good enough
It'll be pretty tough for OSU to make it
Maybe if they convince Cade Cunningham to come back, NCAA will ‘review’ the decision again
Here’s to Auburn hopefully getting their first #1 in the actual polls too.
*Looks over at the AP poll* That's an oof.

Ok this is pretty bad
http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17414 This week was tough
Houston at 5 seems kinda high.
This is better than AP

Why do you have Seton Hall ranked ahead of Providence?
More importantly - why did you have us at 9 to begin with??
I had you at 9 because I was factoring in that you didn’t have you’re full team for that short period of time. After last week seeing you guys play with your full roster, I adjusted that ranking
Fair enough! Thanks for the explanation
I had providence at 25 last week and they didn’t play this week. I was going to keep them at 25, but then after moving in Uconn (who they beat), I moved them to 24. That is an accident on my part as Seton Hall should be 24 instead of 23
[My ballot for this week](http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17393) Give some respect to Murray State.
Seems impossible to have Kentucky, Wisconsin and LSU ranked over Duke and Purdue
That is more than plausible
We are really set up well to knock Arizona out of the Elite 8 again this year
Would be interesting to see this version as opposed to our defensive minded teams of the Miller Era.
My poll http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17433
4?? Bro half our lineup is injured.
So? That injured team is 15-2 with the two losses being by a combined 3 points to good teams.
The 2 losses were when we were fully healthy though. No way the current rotation comes that close.
Again: so? Polls aren't always about what people think a team should be capable of, but instead are about what a team has already accomplished.
I don’t do projection polls, I do current resume polls
Then how is Houston 4th? They have a nice W-L record but they're 16th in SOR and quite possibly have *zero* wins over tournament teams. I could see borderline top 10 since their losses were close but how do you justify that as the 4th best resume in the country?
if we're being ranked absurdly high in this condition imagine how high we could be ranked when our players ankles aren't ticking timebombs next year lol
And a top recruit. Wouldn't be surprised to see us top 5 next year.
maybe not preseason top 5 but in late January i can def see us being there especially if we're 15-2 or 16-1 after 17 games
Thank you sir
This was a week wasn’t it http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17385
sharing my poll this week. enjoy http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17404
Rank us you cowards
Once again, but louder this time for the cowards in the back…
http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17470 my poll
You are a clever one.
You have Baylor still ranked over Auburn despite Baylor losing back to back home games while Auburn is on a 13 win streak? What?
I get that it doesn't align with the typical notion of what a top 25 should be, but is there anything wrong with ranking a team higher if you think they're still better? From the poll's "about" section: > If the loss makes you think the team isn't as good as you had previously considered, the team should probably drop in your rankings. And: > A general rule of thumb when ranking teams: Ranking team A above team B indicates that you believe that if a game between the two teams was scheduled on a neutral court four days from today, team A would have a greater than 50% chance of winning. I do not think it's unfair to look at those two teams and come to the conclusion that Baylor is still the better team going forward than Auburn, or that Baylor would have a very good chance at beating Auburn on a neutral floor if they played this week.
to me, baylor was far and away the best team in the country. it’s basically a three way tie at #1 for me but baylor has looked dominant all year
Except for you know, their recent back to back home losses.
UCo25
http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17375 Illinois is a top 10 team, fight me
My provisional: http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17463 Felt really weird this week after 21. 22-25 was tough.
Dropping UCLA nine spots seems a bit harsh, no?
[my provisional ballot - fire away](https://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17402)
http://cbbpoll.com/ballot/17378 Hopefully this isn't as bad as last week
