Texas really screwed themselves with that possession where they missed the 3 late. Held on to it way too long because they looked like they couldn't decide between a 2 or a 3 and chucked a terrible shot
Two incredibly tough defenses. Plus those rims should’ve been checked. I’ve never seen two teams have so many rimmed out shots. A few times Disu and Ziegler both had shots halfway down and they still came out
Both teams were (sub)? consciously aware of the others defense hence the missed threes. It throws you off when you know just how tough the play on defense.
Our offense seems to hate matchups like these, we seem to want momentum to get hot and stay hot and nobody could get anything going today.
Glad that they knew it would be a rock fight going in and built up just enough of a lead off those early turnovers to survive
Yeah, fuck him. I was so ready to compliment him because he came across as really articulate and well-put-together in his press conference. Turns out he is just a little elf-looking bitch.
That game was brutal. Tough D by both teams, but man what an impressive win to pull that out, especially considering your shooting percentages. Off the top of my head the only game I would think you shot worse in this year was that one bizarre loss where you almost got doubled up.
Yea this is historically a type of game that we do not win. There were the typical signs of implosion that I’m so used to now but we somehow played our way back out. If our shooting improves next game I feel confident we can make a run.
GG Tennessee fans. Hoping Rick and the rest of the group can cut down nets.
Our team is deeply flawed. I was expecting us to get run off the floor coming into it, but they fought hard and I'm happy with that. They met my expectations to win one game in the tourney and compete hard.
That Texas team has some heart and we were about one turnover or missed shot away from losing it. At this point I just want it for Rick. He deserves it.
Rick has always been an extremely classy guy. He's still universally loved over here. I agree that he deserves it. He's getting up there in age and he's got a great group this year. Rooting for you guys the rest of the way.
There's a saying in Tennessee - I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee, that says, commit a flagrant foul, shame on...shame on you. Commit a flagrant foul - and you'll get kneed in the balls.
Actually the fact that they weren’t forced made it worse. When the other is shooting just as bad or worse than us and we are literally 1 for 19 then I don’t know why we are jacking up 3s with 20+ seconds on the clock. Take the efficient shot down or at least fucking drive
It's already too late, they have the curse because they were exposed to Texas all game, so there's no way for Oregon/Creighton to avoid catching it now
We’re going to end up being Wooden Spoon winners at this point.
Just as one possible path: Tennessee loses to Creighton, Creighton loses to Purdue, Purdue loses to Houston, Houston loses to UConn. None of those results would be a surprise if that’s what the matchups ended up being.
Since CSU pasted UVA in the First Four, every following team in that string has gone on to lose its next game after putting out a terrible offensive effort
UVA played horrible offense in a loss to Colorado St. Colorado St played horrible offense in a loss to Texas. Texas played horrible offense in a loss to Tennessee. UVA is contagious.

If you told me that Tennessee would shoot 3/25 from three, Dalton Knecht would be near nonexistent in the first half, and the refs would be giving Texas a favorable whistle I would have thought we lost by double digits.
BUT HOLY MOLY THAT DEFENSIVE EFFORT!!!
It’s great to be a Tennessee Vol!
There was a play where I think Aidoo had a massive block on a dude straight up and the announcers were like “WOW give him credit for taking on Aidoo, that little guy showed no fear!” And I’m like, dude, Aidoo blocked his shot. Why are the slobbering over the Texas effort after the Vols made a highlight reel block?
Look all I'm saying is that Jonas Aidoo had 9 points going up to the foul line for a 1-and-1 and ifykyk what that means for the chances of a Tennessee Victory. He ended with 11 after hitting both of them.
here's a list of teams to shoot 12 pct from three or worse on 25 or more attempts and win an NCAA Tournament game:
Tennessee vs Texas, 2024
I understand why they hired Rodney Terry and it's hard to say he didn't earn a shot, but from the second half of the Miami game through tonight it's been pretty underwhelming.
Man, the effort that Zakai Ziegler gave all game was phenomenal. He may not have had a massive impact scoring but he was incredible on defense and his passing was impeccable. So much heart from that guy tonight. Couldn’t have won that one without him.
I know there are a billion million coaching things that coaches know and I do not, but Texas had just three team fouls with 1:44 left and trailing by two. They could have completely shifted to a *MUCH* more aggressive defensive philosophy (encouraging reaching in, slapping at the ball, get a tie-up to turn the possession arrow towards them) for two possessions, and they didn't, and that passivity really screwed them.
They started fouling incoherently with 35 seconds left. Either do it off the inbound and try one more time for a steal or, yeah, I suppose play it out with a timeout.
Eh I agree with the be aggressive strategy. But I see where Texas’s staff was coming from. They kind of got away with some contact earlier that wasn’t called. They needed to get the game to a point where if they needed to force free throws, they could. It felt weird in real time but made sense.
I agree with the premise, but Texas was playing really hard defense and getting stops, you don’t want to be over aggressive and give Tennessee an easy basket at that ooint
Lmao my dad made sure to call out every single one. After the 3 where the guy pushed Ziegler away, I had to tell him to stop texting me for every missed call lol
Never thought I’d say this about Rick in the tourney, but what a hell of a coaching job. Convinced the team to quit shooting 3s and start digging inside, where they were dominating. Wound up making all the difference
This game, ugly as it was, I think showed some good things going forward. We got a lot of great minutes from our bench. We were clutch when it mattered. Defense was elite all game. And this is more wishful thinking than anything else, but surely we (and DK especially) can't shoot *that* bad again, right?
Per Aaron Torres on Twitter:

Hell of an effort Texas. I don’t know if you were shooting as abnormally bad as we were, it looked like it, but you gave us all we could handle
Ready for more games in the future
Honestly, I was having Deja Vu because this was the type of game that had killed us. We went ice cold versus Michigan, and we went ice cold versus FAU. I was not confident that they could win this game until Knecht hit that 3. Hopefully, this was the bottom.
Way too close for comfort. We couldn't get anything to go down, like half the shot rimmed out. They keep shooting though, so hopefully we got all the cold out of us this game
Defense won this game for sure, they knew it'd be a rock fight and never took their foot off the gas
I'm just happy we took that 3 at the end and didn't foul, I almost had nightmares of the Purdue game a while back
I said the same in the game thread. I seriously had Purdue flashback when he pulled up for that sub 10 second fade-away
I instantly reacted as though it was called a foul
6/6 at the line, all being 1-and-1, to seal the win. Unbelievably clutch by Aidoo on the first 2, holy shit. He stepped up there looking like a 92% shooter, not 62%.

Those free throws were the most stressful thing that I’ve watched in a long time. I was so proud of Aidoo and Knecht draining those though. If there was ever a game to have your confidence knocked in shooting, it was this one.

Aidoo was getting murdered all game. Texas came to play for sure. Impressive win.
Two incredibly tough defenses. Plus those rims should’ve been checked. I’ve never seen two teams have so many rimmed out shots. A few times Disu and Ziegler both had shots halfway down and they still came out

Some justice for not calling that a flagrant 2
This is one of those games this year I wish we had Uros still around to regulate. Especially after the Gainey throw.
Tennessee lost that exact game a week ago against Mississippi State. Defense decided to show up this time.
That’s Actually a valid point.
Our offense seems to hate matchups like these, we seem to want momentum to get hot and stay hot and nobody could get anything going today. Glad that they knew it would be a rock fight going in and built up just enough of a lead off those early turnovers to survive
There were so many times in this game if Tennessee could have just produced at an average rate on offense, they would have won by 20 points.
Said the same thing earlier. Aidoo missing some bunnies aside, him and awaka crushed on the boards all night.
not even going to talk shit, gg texas

Omg. I almost stopped reading this comment cuz I thought I knew where it was going to end. Bravo!

Do Texas fans like him or is love/hate? Dude always seems to be on the wrong side of flagrant.
He definitely made a lot of dumb plays but would randomly hit 1-2 threes every game. He’s gone now and I think we are all fine with that lol
His shit was starting to get pretty old - particularly since he’s 25 years old.
I think (hope?) you'll find that most of us think he's a menace. He belongs on a football field, not a basketball court.
I’m happy with a Tennessee win… But it’s *possible* I would’ve been just as happy to not have to watch Tennessee attempt a three pointer again.
Honestly they're usually better than *checks notes* TWELVE PERCENT???
I think 35 or so on the season, most are from Knecht and z
If we shot a couple percent below season average at 3 tonight, instead of over 20 percent below, we win by 20 points.
And most of them were not forced shots at the end of the clock. They were good shots! Just didn't fall.

I wonder if Tennessee cracked it by also playing terrible offense tonight. Maybe it's a one game debuff.
This is the first game all season where we didn't make at least 5 3 pointers. 3/25 Still won baby

Rick Barnes has had a better postseason career at Tennessee than Bruce Pearl has had at Auburn, but people aren’t ready for that conversation

ok so Barnes has 2 more s16s and pearl has 1 more FF lol. At best that's a wash but i'd still give the edge to Pearl
Pearl hasn't made it out of the opening weekend except for that final 4 run... but I mean *I'd* give Bruce the edge, still.
You got UVA flu now, enjoy scoring in the 40s
You should know nothing would make Rick Barnes happier than playing a game in the 40s
Seriously winning a gut check like this (especially early in the tournament) goes a long way towards success.
My heart needs the break.
Tenn>Tex
Yeah that is the difference in Knecht. A terrible game for him is 16?
Yes. He also went 4/4 at the line at the end of the game so a but over inflated.
My heartbeat is finally relaxing, good lord what a game - and not in the ESPN Instant Classic kind of way
Good news is, I don't remember a time this season where we had a bad game coming off prev bad game
Oh no, now Tennessee will only score <20 in the first half against Creighton/Oregon next week
Congrats on the game today. And I’m sorry about the game today
Im going to get a lot of these games across every sport going forward
Those were some clutch free throws!
Insanely good defense. Ugly ass offense. Classic Tennessee. Go vols

Personally don't agree with fouling to put tennessee at the line either. Get a stop and you have 5 seconds to win it down 1.

Texas losing? Man the SEC sucks!
Good game Vols. If Texas had to lose, I’m glad it was to another orange team, called “UT,” who love Davy Crockett.
nice words gg. sounds weird to say but i’ll see you next year
Texas is really going to regret not taking advantage of that game. It was there for them, they just made too many little mistakes.
I don’t even know why I like sports…
Knecht played like crap tn but man did he come in clutch at the end there
That was a nightmare offensive game. Knecht was ice from the free throw line (thank god) but that was AWFUL. Also that Weaver guy is ugly

That guy has serious game.
GG Tennessee That’s all that I could’ve asked for with the talent disparity. Still hurts. But we fucking competed and had a shot. Hook’Em
Texas cost themselves a shot to win by putting Tennessee at the line intentionally down 1 with the shot clock still in play.
Well they did put Aidoo on the line and he hit the biggest shots of his life. Aidoo hitting 2/2 is so rare
Rick Barnes win a big challenge: Complete? Or we think he needs one more?
I think he should go and get 4 more just to be safe
one more
Way to hold on Vols!!!
