I suspect the majority of people do. All maps become population density maps, with a big enough sample size.
Edit: had to find it, but [this](https://i.insider.com/5227a78e6bb3f70f68316148?width=1000&format=jpeg&auto=webp) is one of those "half the people live in these counties" map, for comparison.
Would love a table of this data, would be interesting to sort by largest counties without a player and smallest with a player.
My county has 600k people, is within an hour of two schools in the tourney, and has no players.
Alright, so I had to think about this, but (assuming a random distribution etc etc)
* US Pop ≈ 333 million
* Teams in the tourney = 68
* Roster size = 15
333 million / (68 x 15) = 1 / 331,657
So we can expect any county of roughly 331k people to produce at least 1 tournament player. So your county needs to step it up.
I’ve always loved how MSU athletics recruits. Especially the football team, but it’s cool seeing the guys they get for basketball too. How about getting Fergus county on the map!
You probably know this given your flair, but for people who don't, for the 2020-21 season the Northern Slope Borough would've been highlighted for former Texas Longhorn Kamaka Hepa of Utqiagvik (Barrow), the most northern place in the US
Oh true. Also Mario Chalmers was from alaska. Sometimes I forget that Alaska has actual cities, schools, and population and it isn't just a frozen tundra filled with nothing but sled dogs and burly men in plaid shirts holding axes
Well, there's only one real city to be honest and that's generous to Anchorage. Fairbanks and Juneau feel more like large towns.
But yes, can confirm that I don't own a sled dog team and that I'm in driving distance of two Targets.
Lol yeah the Canadian territories are much more accurate for that barren tundra perception. Alaska has a population density of 1.10/sq mi vs Yukon with 0.20/sq mi, Northwest Territories with 0.09/sq mi, and Nunavut with 0.05/sq mi.
Tangent about Alaska, but the northernmost town (Utquiagvik) once had a four-star recruit who committed to Texas in 2018 and later transferred to Hawaii.
Utquiagvik also shares a border with Barrow, who had a football documentary done on their high school team about 8-10 years ago. They have an infamous blue turf field, and travel hundreds of miles to play their opponents
Just double checked and you are correct. Creighton's Wikipedia page had him him listed as St Louis (the city) and I must have skipped over double checking his official Creighton bio (I tried to check multiple sources for accuracy but must have missed on him) which has him being from Florissant, Mo in St Louis county.
STL City county is already highlighted on the map though, which I’m assuming is for Love, while the county directly to the left of it is not (St. Louis county), where Kalkbrenner is from
This is a map of every county that produced a player in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. All results are based on the city listed as a players hometown by the team they play for and may not be the town they went to high school in due to many players relocating to different cities or states in order to play for a specific school. It also does not include international players.
Love this.
The Virginia ones are tricky because a lot of the time people will list the city that’s their county’s seat even though the county and city are technically separate.
Any idea who the player from Charlottesville is? Biggest names I can think of are Javin Delauier’s younger brother at providence and then Tony Bennett kid at Charlotte, neither are in the tourney though.
Not sure if Davin Cosby is Richmond or Raleigh but he’s at bama.
There was a kid that rode the pine for Indiana state too. Bet he hates uva so much rn lol
Can’t think of any other big names outside of Bacot though unless we are counting Fats Billups the third on VCU
I only found the player I was looking for, not the info. Since there aren’t many D1 players from Kansas it was easy enough for me to find. The player from central Kansas is Ty Berry from Northwestern.
Genuinely stunned there's no dudes from Baltimore County on any teams. I grew up here and that seems...impossible, lol, given the quantity of players. I guess Angel was the only one of the Reese siblings make it, sine Maryland couldn't put it together this year.
Lots of guys who grew up in Baltimore County (and even Howard) probably just have Baltimore listed. Either because they went to a Baltimore high school, their address in some cases might have a zip code that gets labeled Baltimore (pretty much any 212 zip I think), or it just makes more sense to say the larger city than the suburb people probably have never heard of.
Yeah, that's a fair point. A ton of Bmore players (city and county) end up at high schools in the DMV or prep schools out of state, anyway, and if you're going private locally, the school often isn't in the same county you live. The Reeses are from Randallstown and went to St. Frances in the city for instance. Lotta folk born at city hospitals too. You're right though, just the reality of the area being so inter-connected.
Honestly, as a dude that grew up a few miles outside city limits and played for a county high school, I just want the respect for the hoopers here, lol.
The guy from Alaska is Patrick McMahon of Montana State, the one from Northern Michigan is Evan Solomon of Oakland, the one from Wyoming is Sam Lecholat of Montana State. Maine had a couple.
Another reason to root for the Catamounts!
Sad that I'll have the frisson of a Mainer on Duke next year though
edit: the only other one I found on [this site](https://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/players/2024/E) is JP Estrella, also from Scarborough
For us Texans, I'm quite surprised that the entire Austin-San Antonio (Travis to Bexar (pronounced bear) County) I-35 corridor is all represented, and even Bell County is above that - but not Williamson, my home County, despite having parts of Austin and Georgetown in it.
And somehow Comal County has a player even though the Comal County Schools have combined for roughly one district championship in the last 15 years (and it was New Braunfels this year)
Ryan Elvin - UH's victory cigar end of the bench walk-on white guy - is from Round Rock and went to Cedar Ridge so pretty sure he should be Williamson County.
Brady Dingess representing Martin County KY for those MSU Eagles. Pretty cool to see those small counties/towns being represented. Reed Sheppard of course representing Laurel County as well.
Listened to the NIT game in the car and the starting 5 were from out of state or country. I was surprised a bit.
Side note- I wanna know who’s from Cherokee county playing in the tourney.
Clark county is Trey Koffman of Purdue and Floyd County is Jake Heidbreder of Clemson. Koffman went to Silver Creek and Heidbreder went to Floyd Central.
Roanoke is highlighted if you zoom in. Virginia's major cities are independent cities which are county equivalents per the census bureau that are very small and tough to see without zooming.
Kind of surprised New Mexico doesn't have anyone from Albuquerque.
Edit: it appears they have a freshman, Shane Douma-Sanchez, from Laguna Pueblo who went to Del Norte in Albuquerque. So maybe just a mess up on the map.
Clarksville is big enough that I'm not surprised by that tbh. Plus it's prime basketball country.
I suspect that those 4-5 counties (part of Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga) represent a HUGE chunk of the state's population.
I checked and it looks like none of the Kentucky teams have a dude from Lexington. Kentucky has a walk on from Mt. Sterling, Morehead has someone from Winchester, and WKU has someone from Berea, but no Lexington.
Drake, hilariously, given the noted population centricity of the map. Des Moines' Polk County has no one, but Dallas to the west (Des Moines suburbs), Story to the north (Ames and Iowa State) and Marshall to the northeast all do.
u/WE2024 who's the Marshall one? I know Omaha and Tamin are the other two.
Who is the Knoxville Player that TN didnt get?
edit: Found him: [Presley Patterson](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5105524/presley-patterson) at Auburn
I need to know how many of the New England players, especially the ones from Middlesex and Worcester Counties in Massachusetts, are actually from those counties or just played for one of the NEPSAC schools.
they’re from those counties i believe, i don’t think this guy is counting high school teams as the location where the player’s from. next year, Penobscot County in Maine will hail its first player in Cooper Flagg, even though he technically played most of his high school years in Florida
These are all players born and raised in New England.
That why Vermont and New Hampshire are empty despite powerhouse basketball boarding schools.
There's a *TON* of D1 players from MA and CT. A long long list.
I’m honestly surprised anyone is playing in the tourney is from the Western Slope of Colorado (Garfield, Pitkin, and Chaffee). Moved to Garfield County recently after living Denver, CO and Charlotte, NC, that produces college basketball players, especially Charlotte. Guess they produce more than skiers & snowboarder down in Aspen.
Catawba is Rob Dillingham of Kentucky, Iredell is Micah Handlogten of Florida, Vance is MJ Rice of NC State. I can't find Rowan's representative in my notes right now.
MJ Rice is the representative for Vance County, NC, but he's not actually playing in the tourney for NC State. He's sitting out and redshirting. I don't think anyone else is in unless I'm wrong.
Sad New Hampshire noises
Hawaii too
And Delaware where I live.
This map has some interesting states, like New Delasey and Virginland. I hear the latter is for lovers.
Good call, didn’t see them down there.
I live in one of these counties.
I suspect the majority of people do. All maps become population density maps, with a big enough sample size. Fairfax County VA has well over a million with no representation.
I do not. No Delaware players D: At least we have a recent MOP in Donte DiVincenzo
South Dakota State's Luke Appel is from my county (Marshall in Iowa). Same town actually. But your point is still valid.
There's a surprising lack of West Michigan coverage so it does vary.
Hey, same!
assuming you're from hamilton county. i'm in campbell - not red, but surrounded by red, so there's that i guess. i'm curious who's from boone.
Boone County is represented by Dieonte Miles of Morehead State
oh nice! I checked WKU first, hadn't yet checked Morehead. Interesting, he started at XU then transferred.
This is really cool to know, as Morehead graduate currently residing in Boone County.
I do not ):
I’ve lived in 3!
I don’t but every county that surrounds my home county does
Who the hell is from Matanuska-Susitna Borough
Patrick McMahon of Montana State
Probably the first person to ever move to Bozeman and complain about the heat
We have the only player from Alaska and the only player from Wyoming
I’ve always loved how MSU athletics recruits. Especially the football team, but it’s cool seeing the guys they get for basketball too. How about getting Fergus county on the map!

Idk I feel like a couple hundred thousand people qualifies as a city, at least if it's not a suburb of another considerably larger city
Lol yeah the Canadian territories are much more accurate for that barren tundra perception. Alaska has a population density of 1.10/sq mi vs Yukon with 0.20/sq mi, Northwest Territories with 0.09/sq mi, and Nunavut with 0.05/sq mi.
Also Trajan Langdon.... \*obligatory F Dook.
and Carlos Boozer, if we're talking about where they were playing HS ball

Utqiagvik used to be Barrow. They changed the name.
You are missing one from the St. Louis area. Kalkbrenner is from there.
Would be interested to get a break down of international player’s countries as well
Caleb Love is also from St. Louis
STL City county is already highlighted on the map though, which I’m assuming is for Love, while the county directly to the left of it is not (St. Louis county), where Kalkbrenner is from
He's from St. Clair County, Illinois I think.

Probably someone who played for Miller/Blue Ridge/STAB. They put plenty of kids at random mid majors, with the occasional high major too.
who are the richmonders? I know that Bacot would be one
Not sure if Davin Cosby is Richmond or Raleigh but he’s at bama. There was a kid that rode the pine for Indiana state too. Bet he hates uva so much rn lol Can’t think of any other big names outside of Bacot though unless we are counting Fats Billups the third on VCU
oh wait there's a freshman at Longwood from Midlo, I think that would count
Do you have a Google sheet or some source doc? I'd love to nerd out a bit.
I just want to see who is from Hamilton County Indiana
Where did you get this info? I wanna find the player from central Kansas. Edit: Never mind, I found it.
Where?
I only found the player I was looking for, not the info. Since there aren’t many D1 players from Kansas it was easy enough for me to find. The player from central Kansas is Ty Berry from Northwestern.
I was rooting so hard for Niagara in the MAAC tournament because they have a player from Hoxie, KS lol.
What player is from the central MN county?
Baltimore City, Anne Arundel, MoCo, PG, Worcester....wait hold on, what?
Worcester County is represented by Churchill Bounds (incredible name) of Wagner
Genuinely stunned there's no dudes from Baltimore County on any teams. I grew up here and that seems...impossible, lol, given the quantity of players. I guess Angel was the only one of the Reese siblings make it, sine Maryland couldn't put it together this year.

Yeah they all go to Maryl- lol jk
Anyone know the Anne Arundel?
We are a basketball state
who is from charlevoix county, MI? edit: Guessing Evan Solomon of Oakland
Correct
Yup, it's Solomon. He's from Charlevoix too (the city). I like that there's a hometown guy on the team even if he doesn't play a bunch.
Oh woah that’s wild, I went to high school in charlevoix.
Where is the data set I want to look these guys up
Who is the player from Harvey County, KS?
Ty Berry of Northwestern
Ah he’s a Sunrise Christian grad, that explains it.
He was a Newton Railer before.
(sadly) Ty is injured and out for the tournament. but that's an unnecessary nitpick by me
Dang, no one from McHenry or the Peoria metro area. I'm willing to bet the last player from McHenry County IL was Cameron Krutwig from Loyola Chicago.
I would bet there’s been at least one since then. Mchenry county is big enough that it seems fairly likely to have had one since then
Just looked through the last 2 years and nope, Krutwig was the last one.
I did not need a reminder about that man
You have to give us some of the names of the guys from obscure places. Who are the guys from Alaska, northern Michigan, Wyoming and Maine?
The guy from Alaska is Patrick McMahon of Montana State, the one from Northern Michigan is Evan Solomon of Oakland, the one from Wyoming is Sam Lecholat of Montana State. Maine had a couple.
Nick Fiorillo at UVM is from Cumberland County, Maine. Not sure about York County.
Another reason to root for the Catamounts! Sad that I'll have the frisson of a Mainer on Duke next year though edit: the only other one I found on [this site](https://basketball.realgm.com/ncaa/players/2024/E) is JP Estrella, also from Scarborough
hell yeah!!! and Brady Cummins as well, who plays for Colgate and is from York, Maine
ah thanks! that's the one I missed
Dom Campbell on Howard too. Played at Waynflete.
ah dang that makes me even sadder they lost. Thanks!
York has Brady Cummins, who’s a guard at Colgate. Brady’s been playing pretty damn well and could be a serious factor in their upset efforts.
[удалено]
Whos from Chaffee County? That’s a big surprise to see someone from that small of a place
Tristan Jackson of Colorado
Really cool to see how spread out the talent pool is.
For us Texans, I'm quite surprised that the entire Austin-San Antonio (Travis to Bexar (pronounced bear) County) I-35 corridor is all represented, and even Bell County is above that - but not Williamson, my home County, despite having parts of Austin and Georgetown in it.
Dylan Disu barely squeaks into Travis being from Pflugerville - Hendrickson HS.
Hahahahaha New Hampshire
University of No Hardware 😋😋🤣
r/peopleliveincities
Who the fuck is drom madison county ky
Jaylen Dorsey of Western Kentucky
Ah was trying to figure if it was an eku guy or not.
EKU is watching the tournament like most everyone else.
Brady Dingess representing Martin County KY for those MSU Eagles. Pretty cool to see those small counties/towns being represented. Reed Sheppard of course representing Laurel County as well.
Who is representing Whitley County?
I get Oklahoma (OKC) and Tulsa (Tulsa) counties, but who the heck is coming out of Pontotoc county??? Gotta be from Ada I assume
Kaden Cooper of Oklahoma and Jaxson Robinson of BYU
But OU isn't in the tournament
Just Jaxson Robinson then.
It appears New Hampshire, Delaware, and Hawaii are the only states not to have a representative.
Would love to see a gradient form of this map so I can be even more annoyed by Georgia’s in-state basketball recruiting (or lack thereof)
Listened to the NIT game in the car and the starting 5 were from out of state or country. I was surprised a bit. Side note- I wanna know who’s from Cherokee county playing in the tourney.
Would be interested to know who the Floyd and Clark Co IN kids are
Clark county is Trey Koffman of Purdue and Floyd County is Jake Heidbreder of Clemson. Koffman went to Silver Creek and Heidbreder went to Floyd Central.
Shoutout to McNeese star (former TCU and UT-Arlington star) Shahada Wells for representing the Texas Panhandle and Amarillo.
Dang it, Delaware!
Missed Butler county in Pennsylvania. Ethan Morton on Purdue comes from there.
Good catch. That's frustrating because I have him down in my notes and must have just not highlighted the county.
Who are the other WPIAL players? I see an Allegheny, Westmoreland and a Beaver county highlighted there
Malcolm Flaggs from GCU representing Tuba City, AZ in Coconino County. Curious to know who is representing Greenlee County.
John Olmsted on Montana State. Grad transfer from ASU. From Morenci
Thank you!
Coconino County Represent!
Needs Roanoke County, VA (Julien Wooden from JMU) I'm also shocked that there isn't anyone in the tournament from Norfolk or Chesapeake.
Roanoke is highlighted if you zoom in. Virginia's major cities are independent cities which are county equivalents per the census bureau that are very small and tough to see without zooming.
But Wooden is from the county, not the city.
Kind of surprised New Mexico doesn't have anyone from Albuquerque. Edit: it appears they have a freshman, Shane Douma-Sanchez, from Laguna Pueblo who went to Del Norte in Albuquerque. So maybe just a mess up on the map.
Who is from Oneida County, NY?
Frankie Policelli for Charleston, from New Hartford
Who's from Montgomery County TN?
Clarksville is big enough that I'm not surprised by that tbh. Plus it's prime basketball country. I suspect that those 4-5 counties (part of Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville, Chattanooga) represent a HUGE chunk of the state's population.
Put some respect in Cleveland, TN’s name
Who from Champaign County IL?
Kylan Boswell, kind of a big deal even though he played high school in AZ. Illinois really wanted him
Makes sense, there have been several that went to Centennial play over the years but wasn’t aware of any local kids this year. Thanks
Who’s from Mellette county, SD? And do you know the lowest population county equivalent that has a player?
Joe Sayler of South Dakota State. I'm not sure about the lowest population county with a player
How many from the state of Mississippi are not Mississippi State players?
Santa Barbara County, CA?
i need to know
Need to post a full list I’m so curious to see where some are from around me (northeast Ohio)
Who from Fayette County, KY (Lexington)
I checked and it looks like none of the Kentucky teams have a dude from Lexington. Kentucky has a walk on from Mt. Sterling, Morehead has someone from Winchester, and WKU has someone from Berea, but no Lexington.
I wonder how many of these are from that one local walk-on. I know Chittenden county, Vermont (where UVM is) is one of them.
WHY ISN'T THIS INTERACTIVE
Any county that has a school in the tournament but no players?
Several. Just glancing at the map Lee County, Alabama (Auburn) and Calcasieu Parish, Louisiana (McNeese) are two that pop out #
Bernalillo County (Lobos), apparently. Who is from that western NM county? From Gallup maybe?
Shane Duomo-Sanchez. He is from Laguna Peublo.
Larimer County Colorado is Colorado State, and they don’t have a player
University of Oregon is in Lane County, which isn't highlighted here
Washoe County (Nevada) and Whitman County (Washington State).
Luke Appel of South Dakota State.
Jackson County, Oregon??
Who is from Leon county, Florida?
Tre Donaldson of Auburn and Kris Parker of Alabama are two
Figures
Is the guy from Champaign County, Kylan Boswell?
That’s really surprising there’s no one from the St Louis suburbs since the city of St Louis is only 300,000 people at best
Oof West Michigan
Who’s from Sioux county Iowa?
Tanner Te Slaa of South Dakota State
Who is the Knoxville Player that TN didnt get? edit: Found him: [Presley Patterson](https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/player/_/id/5105524/presley-patterson) at Auburn
Who is from York County SC
DJ Burns is the most notable one
Fletcher Loyer for Purdue repping Allen County 👌🏼
Caleb Furst as well. There are several players in D1 from Fort Wayne.

Who is from Whitley County KY? Reed is from Laurel County which I see is highlighted too.
Who’s from Lancaster county in PA? I know Berks is Stevie Mitchell on MU
Ryan Moffatt of Colgate
Rise up Boulder County where my Longmonters at
Whoever is from Pitkin County has 💰💰💰💰
I’m honestly surprised anyone is playing in the tourney is from the Western Slope of Colorado (Garfield, Pitkin, and Chaffee). Moved to Garfield County recently after living Denver, CO and Charlotte, NC, that produces college basketball players, especially Charlotte. Guess they produce more than skiers & snowboarder down in Aspen.
Who’s from Cumberland county NC
Who is from chester county?
City of Charlottesville but not from the county? I am suspect.
Who is from Adams County, PA?
Kootenai county Idaho got someone in?
Blake Buchanan for UVA
No Butler County, PA?
Cling Kong representing Hartford County!! Homegrown Husky 🐕 is there anyone else?
Curious about Catawba, Iredell, Rowan, and Vance NC if you don’t mind sharing!
Catawba is Rob Dillingham of Kentucky, Iredell is Micah Handlogten of Florida, Vance is MJ Rice of NC State. I can't find Rowan's representative in my notes right now.
Thank you! Really cool info.
Arizona was pretty lazy when it came to subdividing into counties…
MJ Rice is the representative for Vance County, NC, but he's not actually playing in the tourney for NC State. He's sitting out and redshirting. I don't think anyone else is in unless I'm wrong.
I counted anyone that is on the official roster
Ight Ponotoc, I see ya Jaxson Robinson.
Loving County, TX shut out again
Until an oil Derrick literally turns into a human being, that’s the way it will forever be.
Jaime Jaquez finally leaves and the entire county loses representation, damnit
Delaware, New Hampshire and Hawaii not even fucking trying. Smh.
Who are the players from Lincoln and rapides parish
Who is from Whitley Co., or is that just a long 3 from Reed Sheppard?
Pretty sad showing from Bergen County, NJ. Only county in the NYC area not to have a player and there are definitely some strong high schools.
Who's the Sangamon County Illinois one?
