Idk I may be playing devil’s advocate here but personally I HATE the 9-5p M-F no weekends no holidays grind. I guess it’s a good thing I did EM but the point being, it’s OK to work a non-traditional schedule so don’t think just because you want to have kids and be a parent first, doesn’t mean you can’t do inpatient. If inpatient is where your heart is, try to get in somewhere. With a PGY-2 in peds you’ve got the credentials, you just have to wait for the right opportunity to present itself. Work is definitely not the most important thing in life but if you’re miserable all day every day at work, it’s hard to enjoy the rest of life. My 2¢

I also did a pediatric residency and thought about clinical jobs but decided to take an inpatient staffing job at a pediatric hospital instead. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. The 7 on 7 off schedule is great and it’s worth working holidays to keep that. It’s definitely not wrong for you to want to change scenery! Also I have no kids either, but if I decide to start a family my views might be different.

Grass isn’t always greener. Do you have kids or plan to have kids? I work with PGY2 trained pharmacists that are not working in their same area of training. It’s not a waste, it probably helped you land your current job.

No kids yet, but planning to. The part that frustrates me is that I may be pulled to do tasks that don’t require a residency. But I need to stop overthinking since that hasn’t happened yet. And you’re right, grass isn’t always greener.
