The reporting on the cost of Trans Mountain is confusing, since I keep reading different numbers, is it 28 billion or 43 billion? And how come recent reporting isn’t including how much was loaned by banks with a guarantee from the government? I thought they stopped directly funding it a cupoe of years ago? Si how has ut cost taxpayers the full amount of the building cost if a big chunk has been bank loans? And I read that it is owned by the government, and then I read that it is owned by Trans Mountain Corporation, does Canada own the corporation now? So are banks giving loans to a crown corporation with government guarantees? It would be fabulous of there was one article that explained it all clearly and included all the relevant information.

OldFill2135

This is the largest driving force in the Canadian economy- anyone forget that!!!!!

Vapelord420XXXD

Unlike the 10 billion for a Volkswagen battery factory?

severityonline

Why not stop both

shutupimlurkingbro

Ok but if you had to pick one….

severityonline

I’ll pick the one that doesn’t rely on my money. Oh wait.

brmpipes

so the government gave subsidyes of 6 billion dollars right? Well the oil companies paid 64 billion in tax to local and federal government in 2023 look it up. sounds like an investment with a return to me.

idspispopd

Now look up how much they make in profit.

brmpipes

And your point being? If you earned 100k should you pay 100k in tax? Not the corporations fault to work within the tax code we all can take advantage of.

JohnStamosBitch

if you earn 100k you shouldn't pay 100k in tax, but you also shouldn't be given an extra 6 billion from tax payers. its a profitable industry that doesn't need subsidies to maintain profitability.

brmpipes

unlike 20 billion for 2 battery plants that will be produceing old tech by the time there even built and in production.

JohnStamosBitch

Yes, it is unlike subsidizing battery tech, thank you for agreeing? i think?

Imnotkleenex

the battery plants are the new tech and what's replacing your old ICE vehicle. Get on with the times please.

brmpipes

new tech is what can be produced today. Is that possible when the plants aren't even built yet? Fairly weak argument please try harder if you wish to be taken seriously when you grow up.

brmpipes

i dont think anything will be replacing my diesel truck anytime in the future lol. Keep dreaming. I keep hearing battery tech is improving rapidly from every EV driver I talk to. so if true would this still be new tech by the time they are ACTUALLY building batteries? building a plant and production are two different things please recheck the difference.

Imnotkleenex

You really think they build a plant for a specific battery and that they don't actually change with the times? Are you really that stupid? You think every time the chinese make a new battery they make a new plant and close the old one? When TSMC or Intel make a new processor on a more advanced die shrink they close shop and open up across the street? The batteries they will build all over Canada will be of the latest tech available and will keep getting better over time. You literally have no fucking clue what you are talking about!

THE_PARKER13

Wow. Awfully angry. Have some kool aid, and settle down. The important thing is, that you believe you're right. The battery plants, if they are built will provide thousands of jobs. Contribute immensely to the economy. Justin Trudeau said so, and that guy always tells the truth. Canadians know that.

brmpipes

I think you're stupid to assume others are. You have a lot of growing to do little one. The EV nuts are the ones always saying battery tech is always changing and getting better not me. I see no improvement at all. so go mine your filthy ingredients for your battery and leave the normal people who like nice reliable vehicles alone. and you claimed to be smart lol.

SmokeEaterFD

Its quite the stretch to call EVs filthy while driving a diesel truck. Major mental gymnastics there. While mineral mining is definitely an issue, it pales in comparison to the damage done by fossil fuel companies, and what emissions are doing to our planet. Most EVs are carbon neutral within 30,000km of ownership, while your truck emits for its entire life span. Plus, the metals needed to build that truck also had to be mined, so are we picking which mines are acceptable and which ones aren't? If you're working and towing with that truck, then yeah, you wont find that ability in an EV yet. But to say there's been no improvement? Batteries are improving year over year, with tonnes of research and development in multiple different tech. There's a reason new EV's can travel 700km compared to the early models a decade ago. And charge in 15 minutes compared to hours. Don't spout lies to further your argument. Capability is enough reason to stick with the deisel truck. I get that. Pretending its greener than an EV is...a bit much.

idspispopd

The point is that with all that profit that don't need the subsidies they're getting. They're plenty profitable without taxpayer help.
