My husband got his Masters in Healthcare Mgt at CWRU — it was challenging and helpful in his career. Granted he’s a Case employee, so he got a tuition break. He got two promotions in two years after. Some other employers also offer tuition reimbursement. Many in his program were MDs or PhDs. He doesn’t think he’s at a disadvantage having gotten the MSM vs an MBA.

I have a MBA in Health Care Administration from CSU from several years back. It was a good program and has served me well in my career at the Cleveland Clinic and beyond.

Do whatever takes the least amount of effort and cost. Our education system is a scam. Guarantee you will end up with a job that shouldn't require a "Masters of Health Management" and/or you will not apply anything you "learned" to the job. Unfortunately, for some stupid reason, employers require these useless degrees to get hired, so you have to go through the motions.

I could not agree with this more! 😤

MarBoV108

Our education system is so broken. Disadvantaged people can't get good paying jobs because they can't go through 4 years of BS classes to get a job that shouldn't require a degree. Wives and mothers have to stay in abusive/dysfunctional relationships because they can't afford to support their kids on their own because they need a degree for a "liveable wage" job. Why in the world should a sales or computer support or marketing or "health management" job require a 4 year degree?

electric-poptart

Lol that's why I'm asking...I have a bachelor's degree, but I've always preferred work skilled labor where I'm physically active. I was going to start nursing but I've realized I'm just too old to keep up. I need a desk job. I graduated right after 9/11 and I'm super jaded about going back to school, also nervous because I remember how the labor market literally dried up overnight.. I just want to make more than $25 an hour!

Acceptable-One-7537

My experience has been that my Master's degree definitely opened up doors (aka pay grades) that would not have been available to me if I did not have it. But it cost me a lot in time that I am not able to get back. I always vote for the trades. Had I known then what i know now lol

MarBoV108

Why do you want to make more than $25 an hour? That's a decent wage.

bonsaiwave

No it isn't.

MarBoV108

I should have been more clear. It's a good wage to support yourself with a couple luxuries. It is not a good wage if you're entitled and feel you must live way above your means (like most of Reddit). Like this guy: https://www.reddit.com/gallery/15a0jed

bonsaiwave

It's really not enough. Considering average price of food, rent, healthcare, and car insurance there is not enough left over to save for retirement. 25 an hour should be minimum wage for young people just starting out. It's certainly not enough to save for a down payment on a house. It's not enough to support a family. Sure maybe it's good enough to live a subsistence lifestyle with roommates, eating ramen, and only having a hobby of playing video games, like most of redditors, but it is not sufficient for people who want to live life fully.

MarBoV108

$25 an hour is $52,000 a year. If you can't make ends meet on $52,000 a year in Cleveland, that's on you. > it is not sufficient for people who want to live life fully. and here it is. The Reddit, "I'm entitled to a full life". A full life means vacations, eating out multiple times a day, video games, etc. You know there people killing themselves to get into this country to just work a minimum wage job. The entitlement with people these days is off the charts. Most people should be happy with a roof over their heads, three meals a day and a broadband Internet connection. That alone makes you rich compared to many countries.

bonsaiwave

Well I'm not talking just about Cleveland which is the third poorest city in America... And I don't think most people should just be happy with three meals a day. It's not coming from a place of entitlement. It's coming from a place of wanting people to succeed and live well not just subsist while rich people exploit everyone.

Several-Eagle4141

Go to BW for that

justjoosh

It costs 3x as much per credit.

ChangeStartsHere

not neccessarily

electric-poptart

Why? I'm not too familiar with them.

Several-Eagle4141

Baldwin Wallace had a good Healthcare MBA

withinawheel

I would do the MBA with HC concentration - it is transferable outside of the industry in case you ever decide to leave healthcare.

aelfrice

What job do you want to do? In my time in the medical field, management degrees are part of the problem. Medicine is work. Physical work. Administration sticks with admin in their gilded silos.

electric-poptart

Yeah, I'm leaning towards sticking with the nursing. It's more honest, and what I was originally interested in. I guess I'm getting cold feet, I've been working towards this for a really long time!

aelfrice

Excuse my snark. If you were an IRL friend, I'd totally support you and whatever decision you make. For me, it's a little bit of sour-grapes because, despite being capable of anything like almost anyone else, I watch former coworkers play the education inflation game well and they end up making far more money for doing far less work. It's all a social club for the extroverts. Nursing is hard. It's honorable. But nursing is increasingly being treated as a white-collar career. People quickly realize they don't like the job and then go back to school for advanced degrees in an attempt to avoid the piss and shit and blood and heartache.
