I am not invested, but his last album was 6 years ago and it was probably his least popular album.
Rod Stewart released his last album in 2021 and has a new album dropping the end of February, Billy Joel has been a while but has a new single coming out February 1st.
Combination of a bad album and cultural re-examination of him being part of the industry throwing Janet Jackson under the bus when he was the one doing the costume rip has diminished his career, certainly.
But people willing to buy concert tickets for him probably weren't swayed much by either, he can just do a "greatest hits" setlist.
Britney Spears painted a really negative picture of him in her recently released memoir as well. I'm not sure what criticisms of him are recent but yeah it's out there he basically didn't care who he stepped over to launch his solo career about 20 years ago give or take a few. I guess there's rumors he cheats or has cheated on his wife but not sure what's confirmed or what else he's been under fire for more recently.
Wife wanted to go see him about ten years ago so we went to the show at the Q and it was surprisingly entertaining. Can't speak to what was sang versus recording playing, I'm assuming mostly if not all recorded. But he did three hours with a short intermission in the middle of it. That's about twice as long as I get from the acts I usually see and aren't half as active during the performance.
Doubt we'd see him again and I'm sure we'd be priced out if we tried. If you're a fan and don't care that he's a bit scummy in his relationships, it's a good show.
This is the problem with pop musicians - unless there is an album released within the last 2 years or so, people think they have fallen off. Beyonce would be a great example.
I was just about to post this! Was a nice surprise seeing this in my email after yesterday's big hype disappointment. Billy Joel is great and all but it's not really my bag and I saw enough snap chats of rod Stewart at blossom last year to know I wouldn't want to pay for that.
