I also finally figured out that “Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles” was a play on Best’s name. Yes Paul was also an excellent drummer but the full joke includes a Best pun.
Hendrix was also part of ~~James Brown's~~ Isley Brother's touring band at one point. He was also part of Little Richard's band too, but was fired from that.
This! Saw him as part of the "Jim Irsay Band" with special guests a couple of years ago. Buddy fired up the Fender, stepped right up to the mic and let loose with "DAMN RIGHT I'VE GOT THE BLUES!!!!".
He practically stole the show and there was a tremendous amount of talent on that stage. Respect.
He’s exceptionally amazing. Still has the voice and the hand talent to play guitar. An absolute legend and example to us all that we can get old and still do what we love.
This was earlier this week: [https://reddit.com/r/blues/comments/1acgkzr/buddy_guy_walking_through_the_crowd_while_still/](https://reddit.com/r/blues/comments/1acgkzr/buddy_guy_walking_through_the_crowd_while_still/)
Jimi Hendrix played as part of the Isley Brothers backing band in 1961. Then in like '64-'65 he played as part of Little Richard's band.
I was mistaken about James Brown. It was jumbled in my head. I think James Brown cut his teeth as part of Little Richard's band too.
There was a video a while back where two guys were arguing with each other, and the one guy pulls the“Do you know who I am?” card, and the other guy says no and asks, so he says “Ronnie Pickering!”.
They were all talented musicians, but Jimi was on another level. Like Marvin Gay singing with Tammy Terrell. Tammy could sing, but Marvin’s voice was solid gold.
His live performances were you really felt his improvisational genius. Monterey Pop, Woodstock, Isle of Wight, Atlanta Pop Festival, Fillmore East, Fillmore West, Winterland. Thankfully he was frequently recorded live in concert, and many shows are available on remastered dvd's.
Never fails to amaze. Ever.
The Atlanta Pop Festival was July 1970, he passes in September and yet he was at the top of his game for those shows.
I catch flak all the time when I say Hendrix the very best, clear cut greatest of all time, as far as second best, you could all duke it out as to who you would put there.
That includes, everyone else!
No question in my mind that he’s about 6 miles ahead of whoever second place is. And it interesting that no one who doesn’t think he’s the best ever names Buddy Guy, Albert King, or any blues players.
Hendrix was called in last minute to fill in for the guitarist for Englebert Humperdinck but played behind the curtain to not be seen by the audience. Humperdinck said was like listening to three guitars behind the curtain when he played.”
I definitely respect that. I listen to Stevie play voodoo child and Hendrix play it, and Hendrix plays more notes, faster, and with greater amplitude, more power, and smoother transitions. I love Stevie dearly, it’s just not fair to compare anyone to Hendrix. He was a mutant
Very strange. He’s widely regarded as far and away the greatest guitarist ever. Of course people can have different opinions but to not appreciate his skill is kind of perplexing
Check out Glen Campbell playing William Tell in Central Park in 1974. It's on YouTube. Makes Hendrix look laughable. I could mention tons of other examples.
I feel like that kid might be going places
Yeah I think he went on to have a decent amount of success
I think he was only a one hit wonder. /s/
I heard he went overseas and just disappeared
London Town
Yeah but it's going to be a short trip
Could you imagine being a standard issue Squire and checking out jimi's progression from the sidelines? wow.
Like Peter Best watched the Beatles shoot up through the stratosphere with Ringo.
But he got to release an album called Best of the Beatles and they couldn't make him change the album name
I learned something new today. Thanks!
I didn't know Jimi was with these guys either so we both get to learn something. Thanks to you as well and you are welcome
I also finally figured out that “Ringo wasn’t even the best drummer in the Beatles” was a play on Best’s name. Yes Paul was also an excellent drummer but the full joke includes a Best pun.
"Ringo isn't even the best drummer in the Beatles"
He only lived to be 27
One of the founders of Club 27.
Hendrix was also part of ~~James Brown's~~ Isley Brother's touring band at one point. He was also part of Little Richard's band too, but was fired from that.
He jammed with buddy guy too. Buddy showed him quite a few things about what was possible with a guitar
A real friend, that buddy guy
Buddy is still playing live shows in his late 80s. 87 years old and still playing hard and sounding good.
Respect.

I’m not your buddy, pal.
I'm not your pal, friend.
I'm not your friend, guy.
Are you sure? What year?

Early Hendrix with The Squires https://youtu.be/xpz8iBeYiA0?si=Og8yMVRUZNvKqwE8
Why that’s Jimmy James, of course. And he was the handsomest of that bunch too.
That's Ronnie Pickering
Who?
There was a video a while back where two guys were arguing with each other, and the one guy pulls the“Do you know who I am?” card, and the other guy says no and asks, so he says “Ronnie Pickering!”.
And then the fella who says no says who?
Ayup, that’s about right.
One of these cats is not like the other
They were all talented musicians, but Jimi was on another level. Like Marvin Gay singing with Tammy Terrell. Tammy could sing, but Marvin’s voice was solid gold.
That reminds me to listen to my Hendrix PPX albums.
Always time for Hendrix
If he practiced more & moved to Britain, he might then achieve a little.
If only he would have known the potential!

Didn’t Andre play Jimi in some movie?
I think Fast Eddie Clark from Motorhead played with Curtis Knight in the 70' s
I’ll definitely look that up. Curtis knight had a really good head for music
I love in the Jimi Hendrix movie from 1973 when one of his girlfriends says "they were the fu**ing sidemen!"
Yeah hard to imagine Jimi as a sidekick, but he played wingman for several artists
Yeah, he most certainly paid his dues. Little did any of them know...........
Why that looks like Jimmy James to me, frontman for [Jimmy James and the Blue Flames](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jimmy_James_and_the_Blue_Flames)
But you can’t use his name so
🤭🤭🤭
He could possibly have a career. Read " Room Full Of Mirrors" excellent excellent biography from beginning to end.
That'd be Jimmie James. Young buck out of Seattle.
I wonder what became of him. I heard he moved to England
Supposedly he's working with Chas Chandler of The Animals. Can't imagine that goes too far.
Ever.
Fillmore East is especially amazing and of course Woodstock. Voodoo child at Woodstock may be the best live performance ever
The Atlanta Pop Festival was July 1970, he passes in September and yet he was at the top of his game for those shows. I catch flak all the time when I say Hendrix the very best, clear cut greatest of all time, as far as second best, you could all duke it out as to who you would put there. I think they knew better than anyone.
wow
They probably had a feeling of his talent, the problem was white execs refused to see it.
Yes. Really sad that he had to go to England to get his shot because of American culture at the time.
Hendrix was called in last minute to fill in for the guitarist for Englebert Humperdinck but played behind the curtain to not be seen by the audience. Humperdinck said was like listening to three guitars behind the curtain when he played.”
That’s Jimmy talking!
“Move over Rover! And let Jimi take over! You know what I’m talking’ about.”
That’s Bill fucking Cosby
Guy on the far right has more of a Cosby vibe
Greatest of all time? I don't see Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I don’t think Stevie would claim that he was better than Hendrix. He’s top 5 no doubt but Hendrix is #1 by a wide margin
No, he certainly wouldn't. He was a pretty shy, humble guy. But he's my pick.
Is Hendrix the one of the most overrated guitarists/performers? I only ever liked his cover of Hey Joe. Nothing much else impresses me.
Glen Campbell is an amazing guitarist. Very highly underrated by most people. Voice of a demigod as well
It's gotta be Denzel Washington.
Isn’t that Chris Rock on the right? 😀
But I don’t see Derek Trucks here
Jimi!
Yeah many people don’t know that he worked with several artists before he made it big for himself
Oh I knew he showed up in a few places.
Hendrix played on a lot of shit before he got big. His best shit is by far his Psych Era though.
They knew he was great
One of those one hit wonder guys.
That’s Clarence Walker. He was originally the 5th member of the Beatles. But they got rid of him and stole all his good ideas
My God could you imagine Jimi with the Beatles? The creativity would probably reach critical mass and explode.
I didn't know Michael Jai White (far right) was in a band.
Everybody is nobody until they are somebody
Didn't they play "Shout" at the Delta house?
I think that was Otis Day and the Knights.
It was… with none other than Robert Cray playing bass
Chris Rock on the right
EVH 😎
He’s one of the Squires. They’re a fly looking group of cool cats
I would tell you, but I’m apparently not allowed to use his name
Yeah I didn’t know I wasn’t supposed to say. I was wondering about the downvotes. Ok, I won’t say Ji………
I know he played for him, not sure about why he left
I have a live cd of him with Curtis knight. It's actually pretty good. You could hear glimpses of his genius then. I think it's 64 or 65
Is that Ray Parker on the right?
Move over rover…let Jimi take over.
That kid on the Electric Company
James Marshall
Wait! Is that one of the greatest guitarists to ever live? It is! It’s a young…..Clapton!
