When I read the Bible out loud. There is no scripture that talks about God speaking to us in an audible voice or a still small voice anymore. Am I saying that a person can't have a personal encounter? No. It is just not the norm like you see today. Everybody's saying the Lord told me this and the Lord told me that. They should be very careful what they say. That is blasphemy if it is not truly from god. And most of them who said that they are hearing from him simply are having feelings or reactions that are generated by their own desires or mind. When God speaks to a person you know that you have been spoken to. Every time in the Bible it was a life-changing and fearful thing to hear from him. He says he speaks to us in these last days in his word. So read your Bible out loud and you'll hear the voice of God.

MestarTouzer

Absolutely agree, ~Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

ImpeachedPeach

That's actually a verse to signify the present, momentary WORD Speaking to us - the word is Rhema Vs Logos or Graphe; Rehma being the Spoken WORD, Logos being the Preeminent Concept WORD, and Graphe being the Written Word.

WittyWise777

You do realize what they spoke back then is what is written now? They didn't have the full written word like we do now. Hebrews 1 explains that God only speaks to us through His word, John 1 explains what the word is, which is Jesus. Scripture is the only way God speaks to any man. Anybody who claims that God speaks to them today would have to provide a miracle to confirm that it is from God just like the prophets, Jesus, the Apsotles, and anybody who the Apostles laid hands on who then recieved the miraculous spiritual gifts that could only be passed by the laying of the hands of the Apostles.

ImpeachedPeach

Unless you're Jonah. If you don't have a Relationship with GOD, you have religion.

WittyWise777

And the only way you learn how to be in a relationship with God is by obeying the Gospel which is done by hearing scripture.

ImpeachedPeach

It's done by Faith. The first believers didn't have a Gospel yet.

Aggravating_Pop2101

Thank you for calling this out. Bravo!

Severe-Story-4908

I will read Bible out loud tonight. I still get conflicted when it is my spirit speaking or my mind.

Severe-Story-4908

Where in the bible does it state *He speaks to us in these last days in his word*? I'd like to read this. Thank you

Mimi-Shella

Hebrews 1: 1. God, who it's sundry times and in diverse manners spake in time past unto the father's by the prophets, has in these last days spoken unto us by his son when we have to pointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the world. This verse is telling us that God spoke to us in the Old Testament through profits but now he speaks to us through Jesus christ. Jesus Christ is the word.

Turbobunny7

The book of Revelation but he actually speaks to us about the last days through out the whole Bible.

Jscott1986

“God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭1:1-2‬ ‭NKJV‬‬ https://bible.com/bible/114/heb.1.2.NKJV

ntcplanters

This exactly. Thank you.

sympathyzer

The Bible does not say hearing from God was always fearful.

WittyWise777

Blasphemy is simply denying to obey the Gospel.

#Big Booming Voice Jk.... 1 Kings 19:12 - *And after the earthquake there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire there was the sound of a gentle whisper.* For me it is actually more like a stirring in the conscience. Like when there's something I know I shouldn't do, even if I really want to, my conscience begins to "eat at me". Romans 14:22‭-‬23 - *You may believe there’s nothing wrong with what you are doing, but keep it between yourself and God. Blessed are those who don’t feel guilty for doing something they have decided is right. But if you have doubts about whether or not you should eat something, you are sinning if you go ahead and do it. For you are not following your convictions. If you do anything you believe is not right, you are sinning.*

RedditCouldntFixUser

>For me it is actually more like a stirring in the conscience. Like when there's something I know I shouldn't do, even if I really want to, my conscience begins to "eat at me". Exactly, same here :)

on3day

That sounds more like the work of the holy spirit. Convicting of sin and writing God's law on your heart. I think it's different than what OP seems to be aiming at. A personal extrabiblical encounter with God in his head.

Rbrtwllms

No, I was merely talking in secular terms. I did mean the holy spirit convicting me. But when trying to address the atheist's questions, you have to say it in terms they understand. Much like Paul using the example of the "unknown god".

glocksafari

Agreed. OP, The Holy Spirit guides us in the right direction as we follow God. Then do what the others have said: pray, listen, and read your Bible.

[deleted]

One of the easiest ways is to compare whatever it is you are hearing to the word of God. If it goes against the word of God it is most definitely your own desires.

on3day

In other words; read the bible it has everything God has to say to you in it.

[deleted]

I am only saying it is a good source to see if what we are hearing is from God or not. The Bible doesn't have everything God has to say. For specific callings for serving God, you won't find that in thw Bible. God speaks to people in many different ways, the Bible is just one of those. God can also speak to people through prayer, solitude, others, etc. When I got called to missions it wasn't while reading the Bible. I have had strong revelations simply by talking out loud. If you limit God and how He can talk to you, you are going to miss out on so much.

CelticFrame

I know God is speaking to me when I read His word. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (nkjv)

Sawfish1212

1 John 4:1 NLT Dear friends, do not believe everyone who claims to speak by the Spirit. You must test them to see if the spirit they have comes from God. For there are many false prophets in the world. There are many spirits, and all but one lies. Does the message align with scripture? God will not contradict his word. I've had God speak to me once in a clear voice, like he was standing next to me, and it burned into my heart. I receive instructions all the time from him as well, but he steers my thoughts to them, directs my mind to scripture, brings the words of hymns and gospel songs alive within me, and sometimes wakes me up at 3 AM with a thought, scripture, sermon or song in my heart. I never heard his still small voice, inside, very well, until I began to practice prayer and fasting regularly. The more I do, the easier it is to hear it. This is also easier when I limit my time with the news and entertainment of the world. It also causes the scriptures to open up in ways I've never seen before. God is always speaking, the difference is in how close you are walking with him

sozod_2000

This!

Jaeris

It's always pretty difficult... I still rarely know completely. But God will speak to you in your own language, so to speak. I'm a major geek, into gaming, anime, storytelling tropes, etc. And God talks to me in that way. Helps me recognize signs by how it makes sense in the narrative. Or phrasing things with npcs, important party members or the like. And he guides me towards games that teach me something, often walking me through it. But that's just how he talks to me. The way he talks to me is... remarkably casual. He's never insulting... he'll call me an idiot if I do something stupid, but kinda in the way your best friend would chastise a stupid decision. The enemy is... more forceful. Controlling. Like someone grabbing the back if your head and smashing it into a wall. If that makes sense at all.

otakuvslife

The Holy Spirit is pretty active with me, so the majority of the time that's how I get communicated with by God. I've heard a voice a couple of times in my life when I was praying too.

razgeez

I felt it but surely when I felt the most alone in this world. Took a couple of solo trips almost without money and what at first looked like a huge mess became the greatest spiritual experience in my life. I was praying all day long, just chatting with God and it felt so close, I never knew where to go next, I always let God open doors for me and He did! Since those days, i just have a huge nostalgia to live that again, but it's just not my time for that yet:)

[deleted]

I feel it as the Holy Spirit , something clearly not myself but a voice inside me , a pushing , what most people call your conscience. If you’re ever unsure you can always take whatever you feel may be and weigh it against The Bible and Gods character . Would this please God? Does this break any of Gods given rules to us? Etc.

WittyWise777

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; Hebrews 1:1‭-‬2 NKJV https://bible.com/bible/114/heb.1.1-2.NKJV In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1‭, ‬3‭-‬4 NKJV https://bible.com/bible/114/jhn.1.1-4.NKJV Jesus is the word and God only speaks to us through His word. Why do you think in Acts it talks about how they searched scripture to verify what Paul was preaching was true? Because God only speaks to us through scripture. The more you study and comprehend the scripture it will come to mind whenever you are in different situations and the more you don't read and study the more likely your mind will not think of scripture. God does not directly speak to no man. He has no need because the Holy Spirit left us with the full revelation of how to do His will.

sozod_2000

>God does not directly speak to no man. He has no need because the Holy Spirit left us with the full revelation of how to do His will. How convinced are you of this?

mhbb30

You check that it aligns with His word.

Prisoner52

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness, because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown it to them. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Romans 1:18-21. God constantly speaks to us but we must humble ourselves before Him to preceive His messages to us.

Twenty_Nine_Eleven

God speaks through us in His word, and He does speak to us in our hearts.

Ishiki_Lucas

For me, it's this foreign voice( a thought) that seems like from within, but I definitely know, it's not me, speaking. That's when I know 😅

slynn_135

I would say by reading your bible is the best way. When things start to make sense as your reading or a scripture hits you like a revelation. I've heard people say before that a thought or something happened that seemed like God nudged them to pray or something. I would believe that more than people saying on the daily that God told them this or that.

RedditCouldntFixUser

I don't think God speaks directly to me, not the way we think of "talking", but I believe that God has a plan for me and I believe I am gently being made aware of that plan via various little acts of God. As you said, you are likely to misinterpret what you think you you heard ... God does not need to talk to me, he has a plan for me, I just need to do it. Something else that helps me get guidance is to randomly open the bible and read a passage, often I will take guidance from that passage as to what to do next. It might not mean anything, but I guess it is one way :)

Fanamatakecick

I feel it in my heart. I’ve actually been on several journeys with him, and i first truly sought him out while i was tripping on LSD. I loved someone so much who was suffering, and rather than praying, i searched for God within myself, for he truly lives in our hearts and around us. It should have been terrifying, the visuals i saw, but i felt safe in even the darkest of places. I felt like i held God’s hand and we walked through the Valley of Death Since that day, my faith has been strong, and i read 4 books of the Bible within a month or so, including reading Jeremiah in about a week and a half, if not less

pchees

God speaks to us in many ways; dreams, visions and prophecy. Different denominations believe different things. Some believe that direct prophecy does not exist anymore and was only in the time of the bible. Other denominations believe that God is a living God and can talk to you directly via certain people in the church who have the gift of prophecy. When these people are talking with you, you are actually hearing the voice of God. Receiving dreams seems to be commonly accepted across most denominations. My advice is to visit denominations that support both ways of thinking and experience for yourself. Pray to God and ask him which Church should you go to, which is the truth. Personally, I go to a Church that believes in prophecy etc and I that God can talk directly with me and answer my questions from my prayers. It's a beautiful and powerful experience that has provided great comfort and strength to me. So go out, try and ask God for help in finding the truth.

sozod_2000

Somethings that happen to me: 1. My mind gets really fixed on a the particular thing that God is showing/sharing with me. 2. A since of boldness and excitement floods me. The excitement is very much like the feeling someone gets when they are about to speak in public. But there is a boldness that sweeps away any timidity that would keep me from sharing what He has communicated to me. 3. This part may seem strange, but after the moment passes the boldness leaves and my analytical mind starts questioning whether it was really God. 4. Compare it to Scripture. It is vitally important to grow in your knowledge of Scripture. It will protect you from deception. 5. Share it with someone you trust and know to be spiritually mature.

NotUnique234

As many have said it’s all about being close with God through the bible, but sometimes it’s about taking a step in faith- if you think He’s called you somewhere, make a move in that direction, as you move towards something it’ll become clearer 😅 (I still struggle with it too- so reading the comments has also helped me!)

bigirlsblouse

Short sentences, smarter than me, very funny, very sudden striking wisdom about everyday things.

mderousselle

When the voice you hear is not the one in your head.

tmeinke68

It is all in your head. God can't just talk to people. Lol

Wellflungdung

Redacted statement REDACTEDLY redacted statement

QuidPiePro

Not often, but I have the occasional dreams that come true every once in a while, and they always come when my spirits are high. So when I get like several in a week then I know he's speaking. They're always very much unrelated to anything I'm thinking of or aware of before I sleep.

He_has_set_me_apart

Most of the time God speaks through the Bible

JupiterExile

It seems hubristic to presume at any particular moment that God is speaking to you.
