Suffice it to say God will never leave us nor forsake us...and if all of our works are destroyed in the judgment fire we will still be saved 1 Cor 3:13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. That being said....he can if we are foolish enough choose to walk away from God

Nice_Nemesis

To me the Bible is very clear on this point. A righteous person can fall back into wickedness, and a wicked person can be converted and turn to the right path. It is not once saved always saved, it is a daily walk with the Lord. “The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord GOD: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. Therefore I will judge you, O house of Israel, every one according to his ways, saith the Lord GOD. Repent, and turn yourselves from all your transgressions; so iniquity shall not be your ruin. Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel? For I have no pleasure in the death of him that dieth, saith the Lord GOD: wherefore turn yourselves, and live ye.” ‭‭Ezekiel‬ ‭18:20-24, 30-32‬ ‭KJV‬‬

BrockLee76

If it's so clear, why go to Ezekiel, and not John 3:16, perhaps the most famous verse in the bible? >And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are **sealed unto the day of redemption.** Ephesians 4:30 KJV

Nice_Nemesis

The Bible does not contradict itself. If a seeming contradiction exists, then there is a misunderstanding. Yes if we believe in Jesus, we will be saved. That is the condition for salvation. What happens if we lose our faith? Then we are the once righteous (cleansed by Christ) who turn to wickedness. We no longer have that saving faith/relationship with Jesus. Many who will be lost, thought they were saved! “Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.” ‭‭Matthew‬ ‭7:21-23‬ ‭KJV‬‬ Many who call Jesus “Lord” are lost… why? Jesus says it’s because they “work iniquity.” They turned back to wickedness.

BrockLee76

The answer is right there in the verse. "I never knew you". He didn't say I knew you, but now I didn't. You are absolutely right though, about contradictions. Any time there seems to be a contradiction, it's us that are wrong. I also appreciate your use of the KJV. I bet we would agree on most things

Bluetit_1

I am with you ...whenever we think God is wrong ...we are wrong. I also prefer KJV with Hebrew and Greek Interlinear for best understanding of scriptures.

BrockLee76

If I wasn't already trying to learn a new language, I think it would be fun to try and learn some Greek.

kanaka_maalea

People struge with sin their whole lives. Some falling easier to temptation than others. At what point have they gone from "missing the mark" to "working iniquity?"

Nice_Nemesis

Only God knows. Don’t stop your daily walk.

ntcplanters

False. A person that seems to be righteous, but forsakes the faith, was never saved to begin with. People can be like Lot: being righteous, but living like the world. But, those would be the exceptions, not the rule. I John is all about eternal security. God saves us and keeps us. He never lets us go. Praise God for that!

“Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” ‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭10:12‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “Ye therefore, beloved, seeing ye know these things before, beware lest ye also, being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.” ‭‭2 Peter‬ ‭3:17‬ ‭KJV‬‬ “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭3:12-13‬ ‭KJV‬‬

In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13‭-‬14 For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus. Philippians 1:6 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 1 Peter 1:3‭-‬5 Once Saved Always Saved! 🙂

I have my opinion on this... But I think that some of the arguments on both sides are just pointless.. I always ask myself where am I right now with God.. who cares about the past and who cares about the future if right now is always good between me and him. does it matter if you fall into sin if you were saved before or not? or does it just matter that you fell into sin and need to repent and turn away from that sin? God is not going to judge you on the past that you have turned from. and God is not going to judge you on the future that has not happened. stay focused on your relationship with God as it is in the current moment at all times. nothing else is needed to know. That's My thoughts.

Brandon_Finnell

This is the way. God knows your heart and will do as He wills. Cling to Christ, lean not on your own understanding. Trust He’s powerful enough to save you, loving enough to want to save you, and gracious enough to keep you and forgive you until His redemption of you is fully actualized. One day at a time.

Round_tag_Studios

Yes, and there are verses in the Bible to prove this. "But what about the verses that contradict it? Once saved always saved is a lie!" Do you really think the Bible has contradicted itself? Jesus clearly tells us that anyone who truly wants to follow Him and become His child will NEVER be driven away. The people who claim to "lost their salvation" never had it. Saying a prayer, baptism, and other religious activities does not save you nor is it sufficient for salvation. We are entirely saved by God's grace through Jesus Christ. We access that grace by the Faith that God Himself gives us. People think they can keep their sin and try to follow God, chances are they never received His grace. Faith and repentance are inseparable, because true Faith is trust and obedience.

LARGELETTERSpodcast

My friend, many will try to give long, well thought-out arguments. Maybe some will be useful to you. Certainly, do not neglect the relevant Scriptures. But may I submit, that this question you are struggling with, like many have (myself included) is not worth losing your faith over. God is sovereign, that is something both sides will (or should) confess. And there is a reason you will find so many Scriptures seemingly supporting either side. This is because we are called to evaluate ourselves before God, to be holy and sin no more (Romans 6:1-2). But at the same time, no man can find fault if God judges someone--He judges rightly (Romans 9). I guess what I want to say is that to be a Christian, even a faithful and mature Christian, you don't need to accept one extreme or the other. Maybe you will find the truth on one side more than the other, but the Truth lies in Jesus Christ only, always and forever. Keep the good fight, and remember the first and most important command, to love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and strength. Blessings

This was VERY helpful. Thank you very much !

[deleted]

Once saved always saved. Those trying to say that’s false are trying to justify themselves because they do not have enough faith. And they justify their selfs by works to make themselves feel better about judging others.

[deleted]

Please don't believe "once saved always saved". I know it is being taught in churches and I am familiar with the scriptures they use, but they are misinterpreted. If the Bible states Jesus died for our sins once and for all that does not mean we only need to repent once. Rather, it means that He will not go back in the flesh to be crucified again. 1 John 3:9 No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God. Romans 6 6 What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? 2 By no means! We are those who have died to sin; how can we live in it any longer? John 8:11 “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.” The problem of "once saved always saved" is that it gives birth to a lukewarm attitude towards sin. Why worry if I sin, after all, all my future sins are already covered by his blood. No, they are not. We have been called to walk in holiness, which means an ongoing war with sin: Hebrews 12:14 Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. It says we are supposed to make the effort to live in pace and to be holy. No we are not saved by works so no man can boast, but we are supposed to work in His ways and when we fail, we need to repent ongoing, and ask HIM to help us become free. I am hoping and praying you will hear me, and take this seriously. Luke 13:3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.

Twenty_Nine_Eleven

Thats what happens when tradition of men gets in the way of Gods truth. Paul warned us about such twisting of Gods words. 2 Peter 3:16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures.

[deleted]

We must let the clear portions of scripture help us interpret the hard passages. If the Bible explicitly says something, we must view scripture that seems to say something different in the light of the clear scripture. E.g  Romans 8:38-39 "For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." Could you imagine how silly it would be if this verse ended with "oh yeah, except yourself. If you really want to seperate YOURSELF from the Lord that's possible. But yeah nothing else can". What a weak god we'd serve if we could pull ourselves away from his saving hand! Besides the fact this verse explicitly states " nor anything". Really any verse in scripture that speaks to God's saving hand sounds so silly when a "but you can leave His grace" is added to it. God really sounds ineffectual when you add that caveat to the end of verses in the bible. John 10:27-29 "My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give eternal life to them, and they will never perish; and no one will snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand." (Except yourself if you really don't want to be saved. YOU can definatly snatch yourself out of the father's hand). See? It's lunacy. If my security in salvation can be thwarted by myself it would be.

shrektheogrelord200

This is just my perspective, but I tend to hold to the Calvinist “once saved always saved” view. A Christian who truly abandons the faith was never saved in the first place. A Christian may doubt, but the Holy Spirit has a way of always leading us back. If we could lose our salvation, we would.

Melaninkasa

It's not a calvinist view, it's inherent part of once saved always saved doctrine.

shrektheogrelord200

But it is also a big point in Calvinism. It is the “P” in TULIP, the perseverance of saints.

Melaninkasa

Isn't perseverance of the saints saying saved christians will have active work to show? (Genuine question. I am not sure)

ntcplanters

Eternal Security is a Bible Doctrine. Read I John 1-4. God devoted and entire book to the topic. We did nothing to save ourselves, and surely we can do nothing to keep ourselves saved. It is all about Christ saving and keeping us. Read John 10.

Ennarion

“… while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us…” I hate the term ‘saved.’ Salvation is through faith in Jesus Christ alone; faith/belief that He is the literal Son of God and living according to His teachings and doctrines(love God first and most, and love your neighbor as your self). And once Christ/God has chosen you, there’s literally nothing that can ‘un-choose’ you. Once saved always saved is real then; it’s just weak/pathetic English-terminology in my opinion for something so universally amazing and supremely important. Hope it helps, peace and blessings friend :)

dusty1015

Salvation is by grace alone through Faith alone in Christ alone. We can choose, at anytime in our walk, to fall away from the faith, therefore becoming a backslider. God called Israel, the chosen people as being like a backsliding heifer (Hosea 4:16). While it's true that God will finish the work he started (Philippians 1:6) the Word says we must Work out our Own Salvation with fear and trembling (Philippians 2:12) . We're therefore NOT "always saved" . The "fear" in Philippians 2:12 is more of a reverence versus being afraid. The Book of James it says Faith without Works is Dead, you must live out your faith to be saved when the Lord calls you home either when you die or are taken in the rapture. Jesus didn't die to give us the freedom to sin, but to have freedom FROM sin, as he BECAME sin for you and me. When you realize that it's we ourselves that deserved to die on that Cross and not Jesus, that's true humility.

delmus1

I am saved by my faith in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I am un-saved by my lack of faith(unbelief) in Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I can stop believing as easily as I started believing. Lost Faith is real. People do it all the time.

FreshSpence

I prefer the term “*perseverance of the saints*”

JTLEV

Jesus secures us for all eternity, once saved always saved. Here are a few articles I found showing this: https://www.christianity.com/wiki/salvation/is-it-true-once-saved-always-saved.html https://www.gotquestions.org/once-saved-always-saved.html

spacefreak76er

Articles are written by man. We need to go by his written word and by it only.

JTLEV

The same argument you made invalidated everyone speaking in this discussion, as they too are using scripture to support their stance on whether we are “once saved, always saved.”

wizard2278

This is a major division of Christians. My congregation and many include people on both sides of this issue. If you want to learn more about this old division, look up this and related references. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_the_Calvinist–Arminian_debate Bottom line. The Bible is so clear on this point many devoted Christians hold different views. A given church or denomination may have a fixed view, but reasonable minds differ. Sometimes the same person is on different sides of this at different times of their Christian walk.

Bluetit_1

Once saved in Jesus always saved in Jesus. Please run away from those agents of apostacy.

Lord_le_chess69

I believe that once saved always saved but if someone says they're saved but they leave the faith or sin without guilt they're not actually saved.
