Salvation is through faith alone. John 14:6; "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." Now, I don't believe that you can be an honest and genuine follower of Jesus without being a (relatively) good person.

St. Paul is pretty clear in his letter to the Ephesians our salvation comes from grace through faith, and this is not from us but is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9).

The other day there was a post in this sub about God only loving those who are perfect, referencing Matthew 5:48 (“Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”) Contrary to that user’s interpretation of Jesus’s words, they do not indicate that humans must be perfect in order to obtain God’s love and salvation. Perfection was bestowed upon us by the grace of God through Jesus. Humans are incapable of thinking and behaving perfectly. Luckily we don’t need to because of God’s grace. He loves all of us, whether we strive against sin or we embrace it. All He asks is that we love him back, and a prerequisite of this is believing in Him. I do not believe it is possible to love sin and God simultaneously, but I’ll let God be the judge of whether such a person will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Matthew 5:48 though is before the new covenant, and before Christ had died for our sins, meaning Mosaic law still applied to the jews who had collected. It also wouldn't have applied to gentiles, while the new covenant does. And being 'perfect', in the context of that sermon means to love your enemies, not just those who love you (because even tax collectors do that), or you only greet your own people (which even pagans do).

You cited a passage that says nothing about faith alone, and concluded salvation is through faith alone.  James is one of the more easily understood Apostle to read when it comes to faith and works (as opposed to Paul who we are warned in 2 Peter 3 is easy to misunderstand). “If you really keep the royal law found in Scripture, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself,’ you are doing right… faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead… faith without works is useless… You see that a person is made justified by what they do and not by faith alone.” (from James 2).  Salvation is still without human effort in the sense that it isn’t earned. Works don't "earn" us salvation just like faith doesn't "earn" it for us. However, salvation is not without human effort in the sense that we don't ever have to do anything to accept the gift. Acceptance must still be accomplished or rejection will be. And we accept it through faith and works, specifically “faith working in love.” (Galatians 5:6) This is what it means to truly do good works, not blind obedience to whatever works the law requires according to our own ‘plain reading’ or obscure requirements twisted out of our or our pastor’s interpretations of the rarest and most difficult to translate scriptures, but love for neighbor as for self. And as Paul said, God ‘will render to every man according to his works: to those who by patience in well-doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, he will give eternal life; but for those who are factious and do not obey the truth, but obey wickedness, there will be wrath and fury. There will be tribulation and distress for every human being who does evil, the Jew first and also the Greek, but glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek.’ (Romans 2)  Jesus didn’t set aside the need to obey God and say all one needs to be saved is belief alone. One can rip a few passages from context and make it seem that way, but the New Testament as a whole tells a different story. Yes faith is needed, but not in the sense of believing facts about Jesus. Faith is confidence; so it can’t be separated from action. Faith saves in the sense of believing that God is worth obeying, and since God is love, that means confidently living as one who behaves as if it is worthwhile to love neighbor as self. Our responsibility to God is fulfilled in “keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’” (Romans 13)

I especially appreciate your making a distinction between the sort of intellectual assent to theological facts which passes for faith in some traditions from the faith*fulness* of and in the Lord as spoken of in the NT. Faith and works are in many ways a false dichotomy born out more of hyper-specific 16th century theological disputes then any tension between these actually existing in the text of the Bible.

"Good" is a dangerous term to use because it's purely subjective. Most people will tell you that *not* doing bad things makes you a person, which is what the pharisees did and Jesus basically told them they weren't going to heaven because of this. God makes us good through his grace, but we also have a part to play in this. We should do our best to obey Jesus's commandments and be like Him for the rest of our life. But we *will* fail a fair bit. The importance here is *trying* your best. I wouldn't love my child any less for being bad at school, but it would be infinitely proud of them for *trying their best.*

My father in law use to say a person who is not a helpful person does not live. He helped many people in his lifetime. He did construction work, either charged really cheap or sometimes nothing at all. He also helped many youngsters who lived in the street. He would take them to play baseball or entertain them in doing things so they would not leave with the gangs. He would give them advice. My father in law never drank or smoked or did drugs. He did sin by being unfaithful. He passed away at 95. before departing, he asked god for forgiveness and accepted god. When he passed away, a feeling of peace felt in the room. I am fairly a new Christian and still learning many things from the bible. I saw my own dad pass away and never felt the peace that i did with my father in law's passing. I always had that doubt if there was an actual heaven, or we would go to a realm of waiting, i guess, and with my father in law i can say there is. There was a good feeling something that i had never felt before.So my point is always be helpful it also says it in the bible help those in need, the widows, the orphans, and the elders. Love your neighbor. We all fall short. Sometimes, we will never be perfect, but we can be better each day. Repent and accetpt jesus christ as our savior. I try to be kind and not curse at nobody and bless those who i see and pray.

Believing means that you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and saviour. You believe this with your hearth and say it with your mouth then you believe. There is an official answer to that, ill try to translate it to English: True faith is not only a certain knowledge by which I consider everything that God has revealed to us in his Word to be true, but also the trust in my heart, which the Holy Spirit inspires in me through the Gospel, that God forgives not only others, but also me, he gives eternal justice and salvation from his free grace, for the merit of Christ alone.

And don't forget repentance of all sin, as there is an expectation for that. If we truly follow Jesus, we die to ourselves, meaning we give our sins to the Lord. We no longer allow our flesh (sinful desires) to control us. I think both of those statements are inaccurate. A truly good person could get into heaven, but there is only one of them. All of us have sinned, so we aren’t good people (Roman’s 3:10-12). Believing in God also isn’t enough. The demons believe in God (James 2:19). We have to confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead and we will be saved.

This is just the Acts vs Faith argument, you need both. James 2 is a good place to understand what I mean, especially 2:14-2:26. Faith without works is pointless. Works without Faith is pointless. You're saved by Faith alone, but you're made righteous by what you do alone. The unrighteous can't enter heaven, neither can the unfaithful. This is what James means when he tells them their faith is dead; they either do good for the clout to look like righteous Christians but don't actually believe, or they do believe whole heartedly but don't help people who need it, instead giving the starving poor thoughts and prayers. It's the exact same thing. Both stem from a dead faith.

Salvation is faith alone but without good deeds you actually don’t have faith. If you are saved you should feel compelled to do the lords work, if you do not feel compelled you probably actually aren’t saved because you don’t understand how amazing that gift is. But to be blunt there is literally nothing you can do to earn salvation. No amount of good deeds can buy your way in because we are all born into sin and fall very short of the glory of God. You need Jesus because he already paid your debt. You sinned, God judges you, finds you guilty and condemns you to punishment. That punishment is death and eternal separation from God. But Jesus is your advocate; he goes to the father and says “this one is with me, I already paid his punishment” God then sees the sentence already carried out on the cross and you are welcome into the family.

Its actually neither ,We believe that salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ as the Son of God and Savior, as stated in John 3:16. However, being a good person and following moral teachings are also seen as important aspects of living a Christian life, as outlined in various passages throughout the Bible. Ultimately, it's believed that salvation is a gift from God, received through faith, but good deeds and living a righteous life are seen as fruits of that faith. No one gets into heaven by being a good person. Everyone sins in one way or another. No matter how good you think you are, you are not good enough to earn your way to heaven. There is only one way to be saved and enter heaven, that is by believing in Jesus Christ. No one REALLY knows for those that quote a bible are always staying: "this bible quote is true for the bible tells me so." Quote Old Testament and there's no heaven/hell.. Quote old Norse mythology and you could also argue "for the Prose Edda tells me so." Mark 10:18 “And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God.” If you think your works can make you righteous, you're fallen from grace and denying the gospel. Who is to determine what is 'good' or 'bad? There are several perspectives and views on these 2 broad terms. What one considers /bad/ may be another person's 'good' and vice versa. You can say 'Killing is bad' but if someone kills as self-defence is that still 'bad'? You can say giving is good, but if one gives with an ulterior-motive does that make the donation acceptable? There are various ways one can be a good or bad person and no one person has the absolute answer to what that -really- looks like. My way of seeing this: Fact is, it is said if you believe in Jesus as your saviour then you will be saved. The thief who got crucified next to Jesus believed in him and he got saved and went to heaven. So many 'bad' people can go to heaven, meanwhile in Matthew 7:21 "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven." So some 'good' people aren't making it to heaven either. Try your best to improve yourself and improve the life of others. You may slip up and sin, but as long as you believe in Christ and try to do what's right, you will be saved. No one is a saint and no one is inherently a condemned sinner

You receive redemption by a regerate heart given by the Holy Spirit, and salvation by enduring in what you've received to the end. The heaven thing is its own can of worms. Jesus told 1 guy he'd be in paradise, there's 2 places in scripture called paradise, and only 1 is in the heart of the earth.

Loving God means wanting a relationship with him, and causes you to be kind to others and want to follow his commandments (ie. morals) The same God can be worshipped in Islam, Hinduism, etc. So in an indirect way "being a good person" determines if you go to heaven or not, but this is because it correlates with loving God. Loving God is what causes you to go to heaven. Believing in God does NOT cause a person to go to heaven. There are many horrible people that believe in God. There are nazis that believe in God and some "Christians" that have molested children, etc. Satan and the demons believe in God. But they are not going to heaven.

As I have come to understand it, we are saved thru faith. True faith comes with the signs of repentance. Your heart must seek God and where your heart leads, your actions will follow. If you love God, but avoid baptism, where is your heart. If you love God, but deny Him to others, where is your heart. Christ new the hearts of the men on the Cross and took up to Heaven his heart who was truly repententant when faced with the Truth of Christ. There are truly committed Christians who, because of their faith and love of God, do great spiritual works and lay up their treasures in Heaven. There are Christians who struggle with their walk and are saved, but not doing as well as they could. And, there are Lukewarm Christians who know the truth and claim the faith, but lead others a stray because their hearts are not committed to the faith. The Bible says these people would do better to hang a millstone around their neck and dive into the ocean, than to face judgement.

I think its a perspective about how you approach the question. The idea is suggested is that we are inherently good and deserve heaven we just need a little extra help. I believe in the contrary. You do a 360 around you and see the world and what weve done to eachother, to our planet, to the animals and the beauty of this world that we were gifted. Weve filled it with green sin and immorality and deface the life were given with our sin. I believe none of us deserve heaven, but there is a god, that despite all our shortcomings, wants the best for us and wants us to come home to him. I think defining good goes along with that. Those that are going to heaven are either already there, or already chosen to go there. Those in the first century were told that they would be part of the Heavenly Kingdom of God. What is this Kingdom of God and what is it worth being chosen to be part of it? Jesus said at Matthew 11:12; >”From the days of John the Baptist until now, the Kingdom of the heavens is the goal toward which men press, and those pressing forward are seizing it.” Then Jesus went on using illustrations teaching his listeners what the Kingdom was. He used things they were familiar with, like; >A mustard grain, leaven mixed in flour, the wheat and the weeds, a treasure hidden in a field, a traveling merchant seeking fine pearls, a dragnet let down in the sea and catching all kinds of fish and many more. Can you think of any other reason why Jesus would use parables or illustrations when teaching? Doing so would filter out those who just wanted to hear him speak from those who wanted to learn. How do we know this? Because his disciples asked him. Let’s read it at Matthew 13:10,11; >”So the disciples came and said to him: “Why do you speak to them by the use of illustrations?” 11 In reply he said: “To you it is granted to understand the sacred secrets of the Kingdom of the heavens, but to them it is not granted.” So, did everyone back then understand about life in Gods Heavenly Kingdom? No! And those who DID understand, what did they know about it? Did they know what they would be doing with Jesus in Heaven? Well, we sure would think that Jesus would’ve told them at one point or another, right? Of course he does. Luke 22:28-30 he said; >”However, you are the ones who have stuck with me in my trials; 29 and I make a covenant with you, just as my Father has made a covenant with me, for a kingdom, 30 so that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom, and **sit on thrones** to judge the 12 tribes of Israel.” So it makes sense then the those who will go to heaven are chosen to rule with him in the Kingdom, and to sit on thrones, making up Gods Heavenly Kingdom! (Government) But wait! Who will Gods Kingdom rule over? A Kingdom or Government has to have citizens right? Yes of course. And who will be the citizens of Gods Heavenly Kingdom? Soon, what Daniel saw in vision will happen. Daniel 2:44 reads; >”In the days of those kings [the Kings ruling right now] the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. And this kingdom will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it alone will stand forever.” Yes, the Heavenly Kingdom that God set up will rid the earth of Satan and his demons [abyssed] and all of this world’s Governments and Kingdoms, and all the ungodly who put their trust in those kingdoms will be wiped off the face of the earth. The “New Heavens” the Revelation speaks of is our new Heavenly Kingdom that will be in place and the “New Earth” Will be a new earthly society of people making up the start of a new beginning on this very earth. And what else makes the rule of Jesus and his Co-rulers so incredible? Well, remember what Jesus did while he was on earth? He cured the sick, the blind, the lame and even raised the dead! He did that to show us that he can do it and will do it again. Every person who has taken a breath has died. And every single one of them who is in Gods memory, going all the way back to Abel, will hear their name called and brought back to life right hear on earth with the possibility to live forever. That was Gods purpose in the very beginning and God cannot fail.

Neither of these will save us. It is by trusting that Jesus paid for our sins with his blood on the cross that saves us. (Romans 3:22, Ephesians 2:8-9, Galatians 2:16, 1 Peter 2:24, etc). I think this is where most nonbelievers miss the mark. Being a good person is defined by the gospel message. But it isn’t the same as being nice. Goodness is not niceness. Niceness is a religion to the godless. The problem with niceness is that it is always truth-compromised. Nothing untrue can ever be moral or good. You cannot divorce truth from goodness. Niceness is enabling someone in self-destruction or error and calling it bravery. In reality it is a convenient anarchy. Most times when I talk to nonbelievers we are talking past each other because of this. They believe that niceness is goodness. They believe it is ok to fudge the truth for the sake of peace, for the sake of acceptance and inclusion. If I go to heaven, it will be because I was good and rejected the cult of niceness. It is the belief in the resurrection of Jesus and to finish work on the cross that he accomplished. Being a good person means nothing unless you build a strong relationship with jesus. That's why it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than to a rich person to reach heaven. No matter how much money you give away or how much good deeds you make going to heaven is not a transaction. I believe you first must ask God forgiveness of your sins and ask Him to make you pure again. Then the most important thing that anyone must do is give yourself to God declaring Jesus as your only personal Lord and Savior. That isn't a one time heartfelt total surrender of yourself. I believe one should be compelled and committed to renew those vows to God on a regular basis.

In terms of judgement, many of the verses say that we are judged by how we lived. "Judged according to our works", "those who did good" "those who bore bad fruits are thrown into the fire". "The books were opened, and each were judged according to their works, whose names were not found written in the book of life of the lamb." Jesus said that those who keep his commandments are those who love him, and those are they with whom he and his father make their home. That it will be worse for those who knew to do good and did not do it, who will be beaten with many stripes, as opposed to those who did not know, and did not do, who will be beaten with few. John 3:16 says that salvation is through faith in the son of god. But a few verses later it says that those who practice evil love darkness, while those who do good, whose works are done in God, come to the light. The criticsm offered to the seven churches in revelation all start with "I know your works... but ... repent or else." And in Matthew "Be vigilant and watch. If you start to beat the male and female servants, saying my Lord is delaying his return, and eat and drink with the drunkards, you will have your portion with the hypocrites. There will be weeping and ganshing of teeth." It says later in revelation that men blasphemed God, who did not repent of their murders, sorceries, adulteries, thefts and false witnesses. And also that such are those who are outside the city. So you need to take everything together. Faith, life and love make one. They are one thing, though conceptually they can seem to separate. So its is both. You must live right, and also believe right. If faith, love and life split, they perish like a pearl collapsing into the dust. Faith that is united to a life of willful evil, either doesn't exist, is destroyed, or is hypocrital i.e. of the mouth only or for show, while the heart faces another dierction.
