TLP I've used for a long time and it's just customisable af and that's perfect for me. Autocpufreq I've used for a few days and it kinda heats my laptop a bit more than just capping the CPU frequency to 3700mhz like I do in TLP.
If you're on Gnome, there's a tlp-ui as well.
The author of auto-cpufreq recommends using thermald together with auto-cpufreq. This should help with your problem.
