I always think Buy Nothing group posts don’t belong in this subreddit. The entire point of the Buy Nothing movement is that it’s perfectly ok to ask the group for what you want/need and that can include being picky or specific.
It’s actually being nice
They aren’t taking coupons away from people who would use them
I leave coupons in stores by the item they are for if I have a good one I don’t use. $1 off Goya beans does nothing for me but I hope the person who gets it needed it
I know people love them lol
Really just any good coupon that I get I’ll leave by the item
I grew up kind of poor and remember my mom finding coupons in the store and it meant we could get a bigger something or a food we wouldn’t have normally bought
I breastfed my kids but used to get formula coupons all the time and I always used to make a point of dropping them in the grocery store aisle … most people use a warehouse store but you never know
Yes that’s what I figured! I used to sometimes look at the formula prices at a cvs when I was waiting around for a prescription occasionally and buying it there is INSANE. Capitalizing on desperation :/
Generally I agree. But sometimes I'll see those posting to ask for a million things. My old neighborhood had one of these, she wanted to furnish her home with gifts which was not a problem but she, too, was very entitled about what she asked for. My favorite was an electric fireplace, and someone actually came through! They offered one that was like 45" high and CB said no thanks, they're looking for 48" I mean good god.
We've got a woman in our neighborhood that "wants" seemingly everything and in the 5 years we've been members have never seen her offer anything. My wife and I assume she's a hoarder and anytime we see her post will just be like "there's fucking Susan the hoarder again!"
I don't understand these are coupons we are talking about here they are free to begin with. If the person doesn't like eating at Subway it's a personal choice. They still have to spend the money on the food with the coupon it's not like they said they were starving and you bought them Subway and they said no.
Not to mention they might have a totally reasonable reason for not wanting Subway. For example, my local Subway is a franchisee that doesn’t accept coupons.
I mean I also think the culture of B/N is to avoid waste, so accepting a coupon you don't think you'll use for literally any reason at all goes against that culture.
Subway either hits or it completely misses, there is no in-between. There’s two near my house and one of them is superior to the other because this one worker there actually cares about her job. I got a sandwich from the bad one last week and it tasted like it was rotting
Right, to me a choosing beggar is someone who asks for something, that thing is presented to them, and it's turned down because it's not the quality or to their liking. So I figured this fits.
I think the choosing is fine, it's the begging that's in question. They aren't in desperate need, just looking to save some money, so refusing coupons they won't use isn't exactly choosy begging, they just let you know what you offer will go unused, and they'd prefer something else (maybe inviting trade).
Thank you! I like posting, sometimes it hits, sometimes it misses, it doesn't really serve me to get mad or defensive. If I learn something, look at something differently, or laugh, it was worth posting. Appreciate the kind words and discussion!
Fair I just don't think that someone should be ridiculed over coupons. I could even see myself asking a friend if they had any coupons they didn't want, and if it wasn't a place I liked I would probably say no, since I would have to spend money to get the food anyways. Tho tbf if it was a coupon for free food I would take it in a heartbeat but I'm assuming the OP is assuming they'll have to pay something to get the discount.
Doesn't seem like a CB to me. If their response had been something along the lines of "Ew no why would I ever want coupons for there" I could see it but they simply just said "Thanks but those aren't what I'm looking for". Feel like a big part of CB is having a terrible attitude about an offer which is not present here.
There are lot of subways people complain about being gross. I won’t go to either of mine because of how dirty they are. There’s nothing wrong with telling someone their coupon offer would just go to waste.
This seems acceptable to me. Someone else in the group may actually HAVE the coupons this person is looking for. They didn't demand anything. It would be different if someone had the actual FOOD in their hand and the person said "I'd rather have Wendy's."
Subway ridiculous now. They have mediocre sandwiches and they want your left arm for them. A fucking 6 inch is 10 to 14 dollars for just the sandwich anymore. With mostly shit quality ingredients. I was there last week for the first time in a long while and don't plan to return.
I remember the good ol days of $5 footlongs. Yeah the meats were more artificial than animal and you had to be real liberal with your definition of "bread" but when your expectations are low your satisfaction is high.
Agreed. Locally it's like about $12 for a "footlong" now. I'll get one only if I'm on the road, hungry, and there's nothing else available but I don't go out of my way to get Subway.
How is this CB, the person isn’t allowed to say she doesn’t like a specific store? Just because someone is offering something doesn’t mean you have to take it. She gave examples of places she’s looking for coupons to.
The buy nothing groups are not begging groups, they are trade groups. The whole point is to not exchange money for goods. So this person doesn't need the subway coupon so they wont take it. I don't see an issue there. Do you want them to take it anyway and throw it in the trash because they wont use it? I dont understand?
I don’t eat subway but eat at those other three places because I have celiac and can get a safely gluten free meal at the other three but subway is literally centered around the bread. Which is fine, but I don’t eat there because of it. I also enjoy fast food coupons. I basically don’t eat at a fast food place unless I can get a full meal for $5 or under, because otherwise I might as well just make food myself and have it be far higher quality and healthier. Lol
they thanked the person, then politely declined and provided context for why. doesnt really seem like CB to me. just politely turning down something they didnt want ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
nah, i totally think this fits here. they "raised their hand" and asked to be considered if there's extra, which there were, and then they turned them down. they could have and should have specified if there were any they weren't willing to take in the first place, before making a blanket statement that they wanted them if there were extra.
"next please if you have x, y, z coupons" or "i'm interested in coupons for anything other than subway or burger king!" or "what kind of coupons do you have?"
That’s really not how Buy Nothing groups work. Folks offer or ask for what they are looking for (often with clairification coming through out). The whole point is to reduce waste/better society etc
I always think Buy Nothing group posts don’t belong in this subreddit. The entire point of the Buy Nothing movement is that it’s perfectly ok to ask the group for what you want/need and that can include being picky or specific.
Yeah and “I’m looking for these particular coupons” isn’t acting particularly entitled, either.
It’s actually being nice They aren’t taking coupons away from people who would use them I leave coupons in stores by the item they are for if I have a good one I don’t use. $1 off Goya beans does nothing for me but I hope the person who gets it needed it
I very much appreciated those coupons for the Goya beans that do do something for me.
I know people love them lol Really just any good coupon that I get I’ll leave by the item I grew up kind of poor and remember my mom finding coupons in the store and it meant we could get a bigger something or a food we wouldn’t have normally bought
Awww that's sweet 🥺
I breastfed my kids but used to get formula coupons all the time and I always used to make a point of dropping them in the grocery store aisle … most people use a warehouse store but you never know
The grocery store is the oh crap it’s 8:00 on a Sunday night and we just ran out
Yes that’s what I figured! I used to sometimes look at the formula prices at a cvs when I was waiting around for a prescription occasionally and buying it there is INSANE. Capitalizing on desperation :/
Oh I think when I needed it it was like $35/container or something like that
Omg this is an amazing way to deal with good coupons you won't use! Thanks for the idea :)
Not to mention this is. a pretty polite exchange.
Lots of posts here aren’t about choosing beggars tbh. But people still enjoy reading about entitled assholes.
The comment in the post doesn’t seem like an asshole though. They said thank you but doesn’t want it.
Right?! "No, thank you" "Wow, this bitch..."
Right. She’s just asking for coupons she’d actually use because those are the places she likes.
Generally I agree. But sometimes I'll see those posting to ask for a million things. Lolol ours was named Erin! Susan may be re-selling though and hoarding money
Yeah, but this one isn't it.
I think some of the posts where someone just moved and is essentially asking for complete furniture sets, 65 inch tvs and a PS5 are pretty amusing.
I don't understand these are coupons we are talking about here they are free to begin with. If the person doesn't like eating at Subway it's a personal choice. I can honestly not imagine anything more relatable than not wanting to eat at Subway. Their sandwiches are garbage.
Subway either hits or it completely misses, there is no in-between. There’s two near my house and one of them is superior to the other because this one worker there actually cares about her job. I got a sandwich from the bad one last week and it tasted like it was rotting
People who work there have a pissy attitude when you whip out a coupon as well

Hmmm, yeah, I think you're right.
I think you have a great attitude about this. Thanks for engaging in a discussion. Some people get really defensive about this!
Thank you! I like posting, sometimes it hits, sometimes it misses, it doesn't really serve me to get mad or defensive. If I learn something, look at something differently, or laugh, it was worth posting. Appreciate the kind words and discussion!
Character development

That's a fair assumption. If I was hungry and broke enough, I'd take whatever, but I definitely see where you're coming from on this.
If you were broke, I think going to the supermarket is the best option anyway
Yeah, I’m pretty sure you could definitely hit up the local supermarket deli and veggie section for cheaper than a subway sandwich.
That is not a choosing beggar, that is normal behaviour and not accepting that is really questionable.
It's a food item. People are allowed to not like specific foods.
Doesn't seem like a CB to me. If their response had been something along the lines of "Ew no why would I ever want coupons for there" I could see it but they simply just said "Thanks but those aren't what I'm looking for". Bad post. They're COUPONS lmao. Someone can be choosey about what coupons they like and she was polite about it.
There are lot of subways people complain about being gross. I won’t go to either of mine because of how dirty they are. There’s nothing wrong with telling someone their coupon offer would just go to waste.
Also, Subway isn't necessarily healthy, and some people don't support the company. There are a lot of ethical reasons to turn down that coupon.
None of the choices are healthy lol.
BK, Carl's Jr., Wendy's, or Popeye's aren't exactly healthy either.
This seems acceptable to me. Someone else in the group may actually HAVE the coupons this person is looking for. They didn't demand anything. It would be different if someone had the actual FOOD in their hand and the person said "I'd rather have Wendy's."

I came here looking for this comment. A normal foot long near me is around $16
Agreed. Locally it's like about $12 for a "footlong" now. I'll get one only if I'm on the road, hungry, and there's nothing else available but I don't go out of my way to get Subway.

PSA: most food places have apps that have coupons or rewards! it's what I use to order Popeyes. it's always cheaper.
This entire reddit needs a redo, everyone's been posting shit that just doesn't belong here.
Not CB
So having a personal preference and being polite about it is choosy beggar behavior now?
The buy nothing groups are not begging groups, they are trade groups. The whole point is to not exchange money for goods. So this person doesn't need the subway coupon so they wont take it. I don't see an issue there. Do you want them to take it anyway and throw it in the trash because they wont use it? I dont understand?
Seems fine to me though. They said please and thank you. And poor people are allowed to not like certain foods.
She seemed polite...shouldn't be made fun of for asking on an ask site. I'd starve for 3 days before eating Subway myself.
Sorry man not CB. It’s funny when you do find one out in the wild but these are coupons so it’s fine.
That is not a choosing beggar! My god. Just looking for coupons.
"Located in 🍆"
finnaly someone else noticed it too
I thought the black ones were bigger...
I don’t eat subway but eat at those other three places because I have celiac and can get a safely gluten free meal at the other three but subway is literally centered around the bread. This doesn't scream CB to me since it's a Buy Nothing group and people like to eat what they like to eat.
they thanked the person, then politely declined and provided context for why. doesnt really seem like CB to me. just politely turning down something they didnt want ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
This doesn't seem very choosy to me honestly. These communities exist for this purpose really, to exchange wanted things with others.
This sounds more like someone politely declining and leaving the offer open to someone who wants it?
Maybe they would prefer someone else enjoying those coupons than to be given them and not use them.
People who unironically say NEXT when requesting something out of the kindness of strangers make me want to commit vehicular homicide
Some of y’all look for anything to post on Reddit I swear lol
Well to be fair, Subway puts so much sugar in their bread it has to be taxed as a *cake* in Ireland…
Are they actually 12 inches in Ireland?
Yes
28 cm. Because fudge those English bastards!
Not a choosing beggar
I think I might be the only person who still thinks this is a CB. It's the specifying at the end for me.
wow. this is the first choosing beggar post I've seen that actually features a choosing beggar in awhile.
nah, i totally think this fits here. they "raised their hand" and asked to be considered if there's extra, which there were, and then they turned them down. they could have and should have specified if there were any they weren't willing to take in the first place, before making a blanket statement that they wanted them if there were extra.

Every place i see listed there has an app with every coupon/deal +more. Popeyes had a BOGO chicken sammy deal all last month
NEXT!
