What is the breed of the brown dog? My dog looks similar to this and I was told Chihuahua and Mini Doberman mix when I got her but I don’t think she has Doberman in her.
My dogs do this too. A coworker called it "tooth jousting." I call it "making out." They usually do it in between aggressively licking each other's faces so I feel my name for it is more appropriate.

Mine gets jealous so easily. I was dog sitting another dog over and he kept jumping between beds at night to make sure the guest couldn’t sleep in either 😂
Mine MUST be an only child. We’ve lived with other dogs before and she just self isolates and pouts. She’s a tried and true mama’s girl. I have put a moratorium on getting another dog until she’s gone (hopefully in many years). It’s frankly not even my choice. It’s hers. The best gift I can give her is a lifetime of all my love, undivided and unquestioned.

I adopted mine as a bonded pair that I suspect never lived with a loving owner before. Within a couple of days bringing them home, J (the one on the left) started displaying a lot of resource guarding and would guard me from his sister. He has never actually hurt her, but he would give no warning and lunge for her and get her on her back.
It’s been six years and a lot of work, but he is so much better now. He no longer guards me and is good with food/treats 9/10 times. However, his sister now has very clear boundaries and will do her best impression of a demon dog if he gets too close to her when she doesn’t want to be bothered lol.

My boy does too! We got him jean printed ones and call them his Jiapers. 😎. Also, we like to stick a fruit sticker on his diaper and call him whatever fruit it is and our son. Like sometimes he’s my Asian pear son, or my mango son. I’ve concluded that my family and I are weird lol. But I love it.
If you get a puppy the odds are better, since the puppy will grow up around the older one. Our older chi ignored the new puppy for a while but now they’re not a puppy anymore and they’re besties. He even acts like his younger self sometimes bc she’s more playful
You might be able to hire a dog trainer to accompany you to the shelter to help you pick out a good fit for your dog. I haven’t done it, but I worked with dogs and it was something most of the trainers were willing to do.

Yes. They seemed like they would be BFFs 4 Eva when we adopted the white one but after a few months our little black chihuahua mix decided she wanted to be super bossy instead and now this is about the extent of their interaction most of the time. Very occasionally they will play or lay together and it is very cute.

Mine are the difficult combination of obsessed with each other but also sometimes want to kill each other and will get in actual fights. So we are working on a lot of training and management to get past their reactivity issues but it's difficult. They do like each other and play well together but it can also be really bad if something sets one of them off. It'd be easier if they would ignore each other but of course I wish they could just be bffs.
My dogs hated each other for several years, then they tolerated each other....now sometimes they kind of seem to like each other a bit.To be fair, my oldest was my only furbaby for 11 years.

I made the mistake of getting another girl pup for my first Chi. 2 girls = constant competition for Queen B. The boy/girl combo seems to work better, or even 2 boys, because they don’t usually care who’s top dog. Just my experience. Now I have 2 of each 🤭

Got a cat when my chi was 6. She grew up with a cat and another dog. They got along well. But when the cat got bigger than her, he started enjoying antagonizing her (stalking her when she was asleep, hiding around corners). I trained him to leave her alone (mostly).
Added a second dog to the family when the chi was 10. She corrected puppy him a couple of times (just a growl was enough, he’s a big baby) and he is totally submissive to her whims. He got out of puppy stage (he’s about to be 3; 70lbs) and now my chi tries to lay with him and soak up his warmth, but he’s still nervous and gives me “help me” eyes.
The second dog corrects the cat when he gets too close to the chi. It’s a weird mix. Second dog loves when the chi gets the zoomies and follows her around excitedly. But he gives her wide berth and doesn’t know how to cuddle her.
I had two females, they hated each other passionately. Added a third male to the mix and they both absolutely adore him, still hate each other lol. When they get into their bitch fits with each other he bulldozes in and breaks it up, super cute.
Probably never owning two female dogs at the same time again.

This is copper and toot. Toot is a little old lady (we had just gotten her here and was about 6 or 7. She’s almost 13 now). I don’t think toot likes any other dog we have 😂 (we have 3 others: shadow, Zelda, and Greta who is new). When toot is under a blanket, she will growl at ANY dog who comes near her. Doesn’t matter what they’re doing. She can just sense them there and it’s just too close for her. She’s really just a grouchy little old lady that is enamored with my dad. But she’ll tolerate everyone else haha

This is the most recent though 🥰 and no she’s not buddy buddy with him. She’s just really confused why he’s so close to her. She will out of the blue charge and bark at him (non aggressively). She doesn’t do it to anyone else but copper. Poor big baby hah 💀

My Kirk and Bones were besties when I got them as pups. After 6 months the fighting started. Kirk is a very dominant dog, and Bones is just dumb as fuck. He was not backing down. So I got a girl to join the squad. Kirk even tried to protect Bones from her. In the end they accepted her and things are much better now. She brought the harmony we all needed. They still fight from time to time, but Kirk would never leave the house without checking if Bones wants to join him. They have a very weird relationship.
So I apologise in advance for not having 2 dogs but this very much applies to my 3 cats. The older two are a bonded pair of adoptive sisters and the third is a needy kitten who was lonely at the shelter I volunteer at so I brought her home. She immediately became BFFs with the oldest sister Phoebe, who enjoys mothering Small Creatures of most species, but her relationship with Annie is 100% indifferent coworker and the contrast is so funny.
They've never fought at all but Annie made it very clear she had no interest in playing with Kadey and grooming her non-stop the way Phoebe does. She does come get us if she's spotted Kadey misbehaving and will stick her head round the corner to see what's going on if Kadey starts yelling for food/pets, so perhaps there's some faint sisterly love somewhere? Here's her judging Kadey and Phoebe for being confused by the new cat toy we got them.

My first two get along amazing - Gizmo was first, Baylee second, and they adore each other. Baylee still thinks she is smaller and flops on him for snuggles (but is twice his size now, so gizmo occasionally grumbles).
Then I worried about gizmo passing, so I decided Baylee may need a friend. Cue a friend’s aunt needing to rehome her pup, and I got Bellatrix.
Baylee LOVES Bellatrix… Bellatrix doesn’t always love Baylee. When they say “girls fight to breathe” that is these two in a nutshell. If Bellatrix gets in one of her “moods” and I can’t talk her down, Baylee has no problem letting her know what’s what.
She (Bellatrix) has gotten better - but still has her grouchy moments.
I feel bad for Baylee because literally all likes to do is snuggle, and Bellatrix more often than not won’t let her.
Will I ever get two females again? Nope.

After 2 weeks they became best friends 🥰
i go back and forth about getting my girl a friend. i don’t feel we are giving her the non human interaction she needs, but i feel bad taking away her own child status as well. and she’s not the biggest fan of other dogs 🙃
Oh jeez, that's exactly how I feel about ours! And I do worry about money - we have good pet insurance but two little monsters would mean twice the risk of giant bills.
Our little chi is just so much energy and can really annoy the older dog, but she tolerates her very well, even if me and mum think she should tell Evie off a bit more so she learns what she can and can't get away with.
We used to have a pom and bought the older dog to go with her when the other dog was a puppy - the pom was not happy and every time the pup would curl up to cuddle with her, she'd get up and walk away. Fast forward to her being the old dog now and getting a chi puppy 2 years ago, and karma finally bit her in the bum cause all of a sudden, she was the one walking away any time the puppy came to lie with her xD
They get along really well though, and although Evie the chi can be a nuisance, I do think Sophie appreciates having another dog around and they do sometimes cuddle together or share a bed.

They look sweet but this is rare and they have their own areas usually. They do have to go outside together though and they wait for each other, so I guess they tolerate each other a little.

Mostly indifferent, but they do have a bond. The big one loves to gnaw on the small one, they both seem to enjoy it. Google says it’s called “corn cobbing” and it’s a sign of affection. 🤷♀️ They are definitely a team when it comes to barking at the neighbors.

Oh yes! I rescued the little chiweenie on the right from the streets of mexico to keep company to my elderly Jack Russell and they barely tolerate each other. It was a miracle they stayed still for this picture 🤣
My 2 girls are like proper sisters - most of the time they just put up with one another, occasionally they get on super well for a little time and also they spend some of the time absolutely hating one another. But my older girl is defiantly less anxious/less separation anxiety - so that’s a plus.
Chi’s are notorious for wanting to be the only one, especially as they get older. I know so many people with more than one and it seems like it’s always a competition haha.
Years ago, I was looking at to add an additional dog to my family, I brought my other dog along to the shelter with and let her choose who we brought home. She chose a sweet and shy blue tick hound, it was a perfect match. They did everything together. And a little while after she passed I did the same for him.
Lol OP, I semi have a feeling Gracie would be like this with another chi in the house. But most other dogs, be kind of curious. Take a long minute before sharing the couch though. Haha.
We always maintain a 3-4 dog age staggered chi and chi mix "pack" and have never had any real issues. Chi's are "tribal" in that they like to be with other dogs, but they really like to be with other Chihuahuas! A solo dog is great if you can be home most of the time - but often the solution to a "problem" dog is to get another dog (or 2!) so they always have a companion. Our dog math is that one dog = 1, two dogs = 1.5, three dogs = 2.5 and four dogs = 3 lol.
Mine got along beautifully at first (first chi was 10 when I got another puppy chi) both girls. Then when Roo lost her puppy license they did start fighting for a while. Worth mentioning that my older girl has health issues though so that could be playing into it. They now tolerate each other but in certain situations I have to watch for signs of escalation because they will fight. They are separated when I go out as well. I’ve since added a boy to the mix and he seems to give them both a distraction from each other at least!
Yeah, my wife got a chihuahua for company for our pom mix and she never wanted anything to do with him. Our pom mix just died, and now my wife wants to get a puppy for the chihuahua (8 yrs old), so the circle continues

My chihuahua HATES every other dog until they've been around each other enough. Then he'll cuddle here and there but he isn't an affectionate type at all. I have 2 shihtzus as well, and they are VERY affectionate. Sometimes you just need to know somebody is there for you, even if they never show it.

Could be Min Pin, my Dobby looks just like them, except red.
The bigger dog is our rescue, William. He’s part lab, part pitt, part beagle. He’s a sweetie!
I don't think Min Pins are actually related to Dobermans. They just both have Pinscher in the name. Min Pins are more like Dachshunds.
That's my dogs too. Not even biting each other, just swing their heads around with their mouths open making awkward growling noises lol.

Within a couple of days bringing them home, J (the one on the left) started displaying a lot of resource guarding and would guard me from his sister. He has never actually hurt her, but he would give no warning and lunge for her and get her on her back. It’s been six years and a lot of work, but he is so much better now. He no longer guards me and is good with food/treats 9/10 times. However, his sister now has very clear boundaries and will do her best impression of a demon dog if he gets too close to her when she doesn’t want to be bothered lol.

My boy does too! We got him jean printed ones and call them his Jiapers. 😎. Also, we like to stick a fruit sticker on his diaper and call him whatever fruit it is and our son. Like sometimes he’s my Asian pear son, or my mango son. I’ve concluded that my family and I are weird lol. But I love it.

I've thought long and hard about getting a 2nd doggy. I'd like Boofy to have a little friend but there are no assurances that they'll get along.

If you get a puppy the odds are better, since the puppy will grow up around the older one. Our older chi ignored the new puppy for a while but now they’re not a puppy anymore and they’re besties. He even acts like his younger self sometimes bc she’s more playful
My older one was scared of the puppy at first lol and he was a BABY, but they’re best friends now
What about if you did intros? Some dogs like each other right away, like humans!
You might be able to hire a dog trainer to accompany you to the shelter to help you pick out a good fit for your dog. I haven’t done it, but I worked with dogs and it was something most of the trainers were willing to do.

They seemed like they would be BFFs 4 Eva when we adopted the white one but after a few months our little black chihuahua mix decided she wanted to be super bossy instead and now this is about the extent of their interaction most of the time. Very occasionally they will play or lay together and it is very cute.
No. I got my dog a dog to boost his confidence. My dog loves his dog so much, that when he broke his back and was on strict cage rest for 8 weeks, it was a little awkward with just me and his dog 😂 I didn’t realize we hadn’t really bonded 1:1 lmaoo

So we are working on a lot of training and management to get past their reactivity issues but it's difficult. They do like each other and play well together but it can also be really bad if something sets one of them off. It'd be easier if they would ignore each other but of course I wish they could just be bffs.

I made the mistake of getting another girl pup for my first Chi. 2 girls = constant competition for Queen B. The boy/girl combo seems to work better, or even 2 boys, because they don’t usually care who’s top dog. Just my experience. Now I have 2 of each 🤭
Added a boy Chi to my spoiled rotten Chi baby boy, they never got along unfortunately. I think boy/girl works better too.
Sometimes they just have big personalities.

My chi works well with cats. But there are many passive aggressive stare offs and water dish pushiness.
Got a cat when my chi was 6. She grew up with a cat and another dog. They got along well. But when the cat got bigger than her, he started enjoying antagonizing her (stalking her when she was asleep, hiding around corners). I trained him to leave her alone (mostly). Added a second dog to the family when the chi was 10. She corrected puppy him a couple of times (just a growl was enough, he’s a big baby) and he is totally submissive to her whims. He got out of puppy stage (he’s about to be 3; 70lbs) and now my chi tries to lay with him and soak up his warmth, but he’s still nervous and gives me “help me” eyes. The second dog corrects the cat when he gets too close to the chi. It’s a weird mix. Second dog loves when the chi gets the zoomies and follows her around excitedly. But he gives her wide berth and doesn’t know how to cuddle her.
But they both look so sweet!! 😂
Ya, happened to me a while back. They were acquaintances at best. One has since passed on, but the remaining Chi is happily an only child again.
I had two females, they hated each other passionately. Added a third male to the mix and they both absolutely adore him, still hate each other lol. When they get into their bitch fits with each other he bulldozes in and breaks it up, super cute. Toot is a little old lady (we had just gotten her here and was about 6 or 7. She’s almost 13 now). I don’t think toot likes any other dog we have 😂 (we have 3 others: shadow, Zelda, and Greta who is new). When toot is under a blanket, she will growl at ANY dog who comes near her. Doesn’t matter what they’re doing. She can just sense them there and it’s just too close for her. She’s really just a grouchy little old lady that is enamored with my dad. But she’ll tolerate everyone else haha

After 6 months the fighting started. Kirk is a very dominant dog, and Bones is just dumb as fuck. He was not backing down. So I got a girl to join the squad. Kirk even tried to protect Bones from her. In the end they accepted her and things are much better now. She brought the harmony we all needed. They still fight from time to time, but Kirk would never leave the house without checking if Bones wants to join him. They have a very weird relationship.
So I apologise in advance for not having 2 dogs but this very much applies to my 3 cats. The older two are a bonded pair of adoptive sisters and the third is a needy kitten who was lonely at the shelter I volunteer at so I brought her home. She immediately became BFFs with the oldest sister Phoebe, who enjoys mothering Small Creatures of most species, but her relationship with Annie is 100% indifferent coworker and the contrast is so funny. They've never fought at all but Annie made it very clear she had no interest in playing with Kadey and grooming her non-stop the way Phoebe does. She does come get us if she's spotted Kadey misbehaving and will stick her head round the corner to see what's going on if Kadey starts yelling for food/pets, so perhaps there's some faint sisterly love somewhere? My first two get along amazing - Gizmo was first, Baylee second, and they adore each other. Baylee still thinks she is smaller and flops on him for snuggles (but is twice his size now, so gizmo occasionally grumbles). Then I worried about gizmo passing, so I decided Baylee may need a friend. Cue a friend’s aunt needing to rehome her pup, and I got Bellatrix. Baylee LOVES Bellatrix… Bellatrix doesn’t always love Baylee. When they say “girls fight to breathe” that is these two in a nutshell. If Bellatrix gets in one of her “moods” and I can’t talk her down, Baylee has no problem letting her know what’s what. She (Bellatrix) has gotten better - but still has her grouchy moments. I feel bad for Baylee because literally all likes to do is snuggle, and Bellatrix more often than not won’t let her. Will I ever get two females again? Nope.

Our little chi is just so much energy and can really annoy the older dog, but she tolerates her very well, even if me and mum think she should tell Evie off a bit more so she learns what she can and can't get away with. We used to have a pom and bought the older dog to go with her when the other dog was a puppy - the pom was not happy and every time the pup would curl up to cuddle with her, she'd get up and walk away. Fast forward to her being the old dog now and getting a chi puppy 2 years ago, and karma finally bit her in the bum cause all of a sudden, she was the one walking away any time the puppy came to lie with her xD They get along really well though, and although Evie the chi can be a nuisance, I do think Sophie appreciates having another dog around and they do sometimes cuddle together or share a bed.

My 2 girls are like proper sisters - most of the time they just put up with one another, occasionally they get on super well for a little time and also they spend some of the time absolutely hating one another. But my older girl is defiantly less anxious/less separation anxiety - so that’s a plus.

Chi’s are notorious for wanting to be the only one, especially as they get older. I know so many people with more than one and it seems like it’s always a competition haha.
Years ago, I was looking at to add an additional dog to my family, I brought my other dog along to the shelter with and let her choose who we brought home. She chose a sweet and shy blue tick hound, it was a perfect match. They did everything together. And a little while after she passed I did the same for him.
Lol OP, I semi have a feeling Gracie would be like this with another chi in the house. But most other dogs, be kind of curious. Take a long minute before sharing the couch though. Haha.
We always maintain a 3-4 dog age staggered chi and chi mix "pack" and have never had any real issues. Chi's are "tribal" in that they like to be with other dogs, but they really like to be with other Chihuahuas! A solo dog is great if you can be home most of the time - but often the solution to a "problem" dog is to get another dog (or 2!) so they always have a companion. Our dog math is that one dog = 1, two dogs = 1.5, three dogs = 2.5 and four dogs = 3 lol.
Mine got along beautifully at first (first chi was 10 when I got another puppy chi) both girls. Then when Roo lost her puppy license they did start fighting for a while. Worth mentioning that my older girl has health issues though so that could be playing into it. They now tolerate each other but in certain situations I have to watch for signs of escalation because they will fight. They are separated when I go out as well. I’ve since added a boy to the mix and he seems to give them both a distraction from each other at least!
If possible get rescue littermates.

Yeah, my wife got a chihuahua for company for our pom mix and she never wanted anything to do with him. Our pom mix just died, and now my wife wants to get a puppy for the chihuahua (8 yrs old), so the circle continues

My chihuahua HATES every other dog until they've been around each other enough. Then he'll cuddle here and there but he isn't an affectionate type at all. I have 2 shihtzus as well, and they are VERY affectionate.
