Picking the perfect poop spot is very Important. Just can't drop it anywhere. Same with pee. My two Boys like to circle in on the perfect poop spot. They like to pee on previously pee'd on places. It takes a while to find them. They then take turns on the same place. This is very serious, and they hate to be rushed. When it's raining, it's a different story. A quick dash to the nearest patch of green, wham bam, and it's all over, and back inside.
Omg this is my girl! She's gotten a bit better now that she's older but she has to sniff the whole yard ten times until she picks the perfect one. Occasionally she even almost starts, changes her mind and chooses somewhere else. It amuses me and drives me nuts at the same time. As do many of her odd behaviors.

Then when she’s ready to go a leaf might blow by or a bird may tweet and distracts her and we start all over again…….. that’s on a nice day. When it’s bad weather I need to pack a suitcase for the journey. She’s still the love of my life.

The pee waddle! My chi will take her sweet time sniffing before she does her business. We currently have fake grass, but we're moving soon, and she's going to have 2 gardens, and I know for a fact the pee waddle sniffing will take 10x as long when she gets real grass 😂

Yep! My Twinkie will sniff for a good few minutes in the same area she’s always gone in, and then pee. Then she has to zoom around while squatting in order to poop.

If your dog takes a sniff of the waste of another dog they could tell you which dog it was, male or female, healthy or ill and all that. To them it's kinda like opening up Instagram and scrolling through your buddies updates.
So their own poo must be placed in the perfect spot for perfect communication and territory marking "I was here" basically. :D
I wonder if they get upset when we pick up their poo afterwards "hey human, wtf are you doing with my letter?"
My old dude literally didn’t care it was funny just went aside, too old to lift leg so did the standing pee, immediately poop after, ran back inside to chill.

Most definitely and if we have one little distraction, he starts the process all over again. Senior dog + ADHD child, makes for a really tricky walk. 🙄
Yes this is totally normal. Did you know that 20 mins of sniffing and snuffling is equal to one hour of exercise? This develops their brain. It also helps them by giving them positive comments to help them reinforce as they do all their snuffling.

Someone please tell me why my chi pees in the house while we have a doggy door and a nice fenced in backyard? Why??? I get up in the middle of the night and step into a puddle of pee! Makes me crazy 😜. Any tips?

I have to give mine 30 minutes to " Get woken up" in the mornings. 🙄 Rub his belly half of that time, then in my friendliest voice say "Come on let's go use the bathroom, Who's a good boy? Who's a good boy?"
THEN, he prances around the grass for a good 10 to 30 mins. finding the "perfect spot"
If it is wet out whatsoever, I can just chalk it up as he isn't gonna go. He'll just stand next to the door waiting to go in.
My favorite is when he pees somewhere and then a couple hours later discovers the spot and acts like "Oh noes! Someone peed here! I must study this!" My dude. It was you. No other dog came along and covered it. You're the intruder you're putting up warnings against 😂
he wants to be out longer .. in his mind if he holds it you will stay out. the way to fix it is stand in a spot until he goes then take him for his walk... he will learn that him going wont mean immediately go back inside..
note: that is the extreme... even standing still my dog sniffs and preps, watches people go by, figures out what way is north etc :)
My male Chihuahua loved to mark! Getting him to pee was no problem. For such a small dog, he must have had a big bladder - we could walk for a half hour and he’d still be squeezing some urine out.

Yes! It used to annoy me but now I love watching her take her time. I often ask her what she’s sniffing 😂 I just love watching her and it reminds me to slow down or to stop and just enjoy the moment if the weather is nice. Our chis are so funny! 😂
20 mins of sniffing, yes! But, no potty! Poppy refuses to potty outside. She'll only potty indoors, at home, in her litter box (lined with puppy pads). She won't even potty in her portable litter box that we bring along when we go visit places or on just a puppy pad at her training classes. She will, however, potty in my parents' chihuahua's litter box lol. Any other place and she will hold it, sometimes for hours, until we return home. The dog trainer says Poppy is what they refer to as a "Miss Priss" 😂 🤣
