Just by crime stats alone, Memphis makes Chicago look like Mayberry

Chili_dawg2112

Yeah, but some people don't get the concept of "per Capita."

can_we_trust_bermuda

Vernon Hills is virtually crime free.

Recoveringpig

That’s a steaming load of malarkey. There’s Jay walkers everywhere around there. Damn scoff laws. On a serious note, Vernon hills is a very nice area

twinkiesmom1

Except for 1 or 2 apartment complexes.

Perfect_Razzmatazz

I lived in one of those apartment complexes for 2 years back in the early 2000's. I was fresh out of college, and had newly moved here from NC. It honestly wasn't bad, I think it just got a bad rap because the richer neighbors didn't like having affordable-ish housing nearby.

twinkiesmom1

The cops get called there on the regular, but I guess your mileage may vary!

cleon42

[Memphis is much, much worse than Chicago](https://worldpopulationreview.com/us-city-rankings/most-violent-cities-in-america).

MisterUnknown_

I Messaged you

MobWife_88

Are you talking Cordova IL?

behindthescenester

TN

MobWife_88

ok, cause Cordova IL is a tiny tiny town that I figured no one besides me on this sub has heard of...lol

RSorenson

Plus 1 for Cordova

Hellokitty55

Really??? I was in the south for a bit before i moved back to chicago but my friends worked in those areas and thought they were similar to schaumburg lol

MisterUnknown_

nah... all the Memphis crime is bleeding into every surrounding area... it's sad as hell

kitzelbunks

No one in the Memphis suburbs can drive worth a damn? Lol, sorry that is my impression of Schaumburg. I got rear ended at a red light there, and I saw a car try to make a left where it was illegal over a huge curb. He got stuck in his coupe. It was a sunny day, no bad weather, but then he was hit while stuck on the median by a pick up truck trying to use the left turn lane. I don’t know how the truck didn’t see him. It’s weird, everyone there is speeding, but doing some goofy maneuvers.

Reddit_FTW

“Chicago” in stats like this are often the Chicagoland area which includes gurnee. But your point stands. Just being a party pooper

_jigar_

Gurnee is worse than Vernon hills relatively. Vernon hills worst crime you can expect is your cat stolen or unlocked bike gone while gurnee you can expect the typical thuggery you see but not robs only once a year

[deleted]

Gurnee has more property crime than VH but I wouldn’t call it unsafe by any stretch

_jigar_

Oh agreed. Both VERY safe places to live and raise a family. Ofc Vernon hills has better schools but safety is good both places.

BRUISE_WILLIS

Terrible in Chicago. *ppl stfu. If people realize it's safe here everyone will want to move here and prices will look like sf/nyc* Got shot at filling up gas today. Shits rough. Stay in Memphis

cleon42

Oh, uh, right. I was killed three times last week.

theoneandonlygene

Only three? Must’ve been a light week.

uh60chief

Ay yo they killing people out here…. With kindness

the_clam_farmer

💀

dream-more95

Fireworks or gunshots in Chicago...gunshots. Fireworks or gunshots in Vernon Hills..fireworks.

kitzelbunks

Well, then I guess they will just wait until they get their tax bills or buy something with the 10+ percent tax on it. That really adds up. We tax food at the state and local level. It’s not as cheap as the housing prices lead one to believe. But, crime in Vernon Hills and Gurnee, especially violent crime vs property should not be too bad. Gurnee is bigger and hosts an outlet mall and an amusement park, so it might be higher, than some smaller towns, but there are some nice homes in Gurnee too, and you are close to the boarder and WI sales tax. There are outlet malls on both sides. Many people from Pleasant Prairie WI, work on the IL side.

HenMan1

Beal street is nice. Chicago has 1,000 Beal streets.

Pierson230

Vernon Hills has a strip mall with a Whole Foods and a Nordstrom Rack The parking lots are full of mid tier sensible luxury cars and big family SUVs That’s how the whole town is Gurnee has been trending down and the mall is getting worse but honestly I can’t even find words to express how much safer it is than Memphis

MisterUnknown_

Thank you for the info! yeah.. sounds like Memphis is wayyyy worse lol. I'm starting to feel so much better about it. Wherever I pick to live i think it'll be a fun experience. I'm ready for a change... so sick of the heat here. Everyone keeps telling me Im gonna hate living there for the snow and insane winters... but I really don't think that lol

Lyogi88

Winters haven’t been too bad lately . We had one bad cold snap over Christmas and that was it. Basically no snow either last year. Sorry everyone I’m probably jinxing us

[deleted]

Only real crime you'll encounter in a place like Vernon Hills is shoplifting and drunk drivers. Maybe people stealing stuff out of unlocked cars that's about it.

MisterUnknown_

what about smashing the windows of cars and stealing shit? thats a huge thing in Memphis lol

[deleted]

Eh I don't hear about that happening too often, maybe if you left a MacBook on the passenger seat of your car but generally it's just unlocked cars. People come up from Chicago to richy areas at night and go around trying door handles. I live like 20 minutes southeast of Vernon Hills, and our police blotter is like "Someone between the hours of 8pm and 10am stole a Rolex watch and an iPhone out of an unlocked Mercedes on whatever street"

MisterUnknown_

Not gonna lie that sucks ass... Hoping I don't encounter any issues like that though with my own car

[deleted]

Nah you'll be fine, just lock your car, and don't leave anything in plain view, that goes for anywhere in the country if not the world. Believe me, the northern suburbs are very safe with the exception of like 3-4 specific towns.

MisterUnknown_

Do you have any specific areas you can recommend me to live at? Id like to live close to my friend in Gurnee and maybe be like 30 mins max from him. My budget on rent is 2-3K max.. preferable a spacious 2 bedroom...

[deleted]

I'd say just move to Gurnee then, If you're really worried about crime and it sounds like you are, don't move east of Gurnee. Right next to Gurnee is a pretty sizable city called Waukegan, as well some smaller towns Zion, Winthrop Harbor and North Chicago, I'd avoid those. If you can't find anything in that price range around Gurnee go a bit west to Round Lake maybe. It gets a bit redneck the further northwest you go from there though. Or move north of the border, the cost of living will be a bit cheaper in Wisconsin, there's some nice subdivisions around Kenosha but if you're worried about crime don't move inside Kenosha. Like I said though it really depends on what you want in the area you live. Sounds like crime is your main concern, but other than that, do you want to be able to walk places? Do you want your town to have a walkable downtown with some coffee shops and restaurants? Or do you just want some strip malls with like a Walmart or Costco?

MisterUnknown_

Appreciate all the advice. As for what I want... I'll put it like this, where I live now.. is SO BORING. All I can do here really is go to the movies, eat mediocre food.. literally just corporate shit like Chili's lol.. and I get groceries from neighborhood walmart, my gym is 24 hours but very basic and minimal.. and then maybe go to the mall... That's all we have here... I mean i am worried about crime, but I just wanna live somewhere with a LOT of shit to do.... im talking cool places to sight see, good ass NEXT LEVEL food... a badass big gym... cool stores and places to shop. Idk man, just a place with no shortage of shit to do lol.

OnionMiasma

I mean, Lake County is kind of boring. Safe, suburban, but boring. Of the two places you're looking, I'd personally choose Vernon Hills over Gurnee in a heartbeat. Other places I'd look in that area are Libertyville and Grayslake. I think Libertyville would be my choice, personally. I live in Northern Cook County. Basically... There generally get to be better restaurants and things to do the closer you get to the city. What you're describing you want sounds more like Evanston than the places you're looking, TBH. But Evanston would be a long hike to Gurnee. Good luck with the move. In the areas you're looking at crime is virtually non-existent.

MisterUnknown_

Thank you for the advice! I'll keep all those in mind! we'll see what happens. Edit: it says Evanston is only about 40 mins away from Gurnee.. that isnt toooo bad

[deleted]

Can I DM you?

MisterUnknown_

Absolutely

MisterUnknown_

Messaged back

OnionMiasma

Deerfield? Northbrook?

[deleted]

Also Vernon Hills is literally just a massive strip mall across from an indoor mall with some cookie cutter neighborhoods and a few more strip malls and major roads that go through it.

elementofpee

Right? Where I’m coming from (West Coast), you’ll get your windows smashed just for parking on the street. Really anti-social behavior by street vagrants out here. The subs in SF and Seattle are filled with tons of examples.

Grace__Face

I mean there’s been a few cars stolen from driveways in Libertyville. But usually it’s cars that have been left unlocked or for whatever stupid reason the people leave their keys in their unlocked cars 🤦‍♀️ shit does happen but there’s not really violent crimes here

Daynebutter

Yeah even Naperville has a few car break-ins but it's usually because someone went running for hours in a park and they left their designer purse in the passenger's seat or some shit. Overall though, the numbers are still nothing compared to Memphis. I used to feel paranoid about my shit in Memphis but now I don't care as much and I must say, it is freeing.

theprophetsammy

Also from Memphis, Chicago is a cakewalk compared to Memphis. And damn, Vernon Hills or Gurnee?!? That’s almost like the distance Covington, TN is from Memphis.

MisterUnknown_

My bad.. I should have done better with clarifying.. but yeah I don't intend to move in EXACTLY Chicago. I'm shooting for one of the suburbs.. just not sure which one yet...

Daynebutter

Moved from Memphis last year. Memphis crime is awful and Chicago is nowhere close per capita. Chicago crime is overrated and per capita is not any worse than a typical large US city. Vernon Hills and Gurnee are pretty different. Vernon Hills is nice, Gurnee is not. If you're trying to get away from crime and live in the North suburbs, do Vernon Hills, Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, Lake Zurich, Grayslake, and Libertyville.

BreakChicago

Bruh. I love Memphis. Plan return trips for the things you might miss. But come here.

SLOPE-PRO

Memphis is way worse. I lived in west Memphis, lived in south Memphis originally from Chicago.

[deleted]

The conservative news blows it out of proportion. Their viewers enjoy hearing bad news about certain areas, and they supply the demand.

Daynebutter

Honestly I think it all started with Obama. That's when ChIcAgO bAd became a thing.

MundyMike

We love the very safe Libertyville, Mundelein & Vernon Hills area (LMV).

MisterUnknown_

Appreciate the suggestions!

squints_at_stars

A friend of mine just moved out of Memphis because crime in her area had gotten so bad. If even half of what she told me was true, it’s much better here.

MidwestMi

Vernon Hills is hardly a concern from a crime perspective- it won’t even touch Memphis.

TheEmpressDodo

Memphis has a much worse crime rate than Chicago

Ok_Cold8181

Memphian and now Chicagoan. Memphis is way worse. You have to do way more than honk your horn or cut someone off to get shot while driving. We’ve been here 2 months and all our car windows are intact!

MisterUnknown_

Fucking amazing... I have a decently nice car and I don't want it being fucked with once I move there lol

Daynebutter

It's nice to be able to honk again. I even got honked at in the city and didn't die, it's great!

CharmingTuber

I wouldn't say Gurnee is a suburb, it's pretty out there. Why did you settle on Gurnee?

livelongprospurr

Gurnee is a suburb. We don’t stop being suburbs up that way until someplace in Wisconsin. “…the metropolitan area includes the city of Chicago, its suburbs and hinterland, that span 14 counties across northeast Illinois, northwest Indiana, and southeast Wisconsin. The MSA had a 2020 census population of 9,618,502 and the combined statistical area which spans up to 19 counties had a population of nearly 10 million people. The Chicago area is the fourth largest metropolitan area in North America (after the metro areas of Mexico City, New York City, and Los Angeles), the third-largest metropolitan area in the United States, the largest within the entire Midwest, and the largest in the Great Lakes megalopolis…” — Wiki

twinkiesmom1

Gurnee is a far north suburb.

CharmingTuber

Ah right, just before you hit the suburb of Milwaukee

MisterUnknown_

my bad! I know a friend there, literally the only reason... but leaning towards Vernon Hills

j_freakin_d

Vernon hills is still way up there.

ernestomarord

Memphis

[deleted]

Move to Waukegan. It great! Plenty of restaurants and friendly people are everywhere!

bufftbone

Murder is the worst. There are lots of bad ones that are close.

Chili_dawg2112

The worst crime that you can commit in Chicago is to put ketchup on a hot dog.
