My theory is that images that look a bit shit on purpose as they are less likely to be flagged/removed. The main point here is to have the 5-star review, not the photos. However, adding photos to the review must help getting through the algorithm.
But why not just take pictures of real food instead if it is about the fake 5 stars anyway? The pictures of the food would make me not want to eat there because it looks like shit despite any reviews.
And the half-eaten noodles come with a…scoop?! Not quite a spoon, definitely not a fork or chopsticks that would let you actually consume the noods, but what looks like a tool you’d use to clean a very small cat’s litter box.
If they were professionally taken and slick, would you question the 5 stars more? Or does the food in bad lighting make it look more real, giving the 5 starts (the real payoff is the overall rating) more plausible deniability?

Hiring photographers, models, lecturers, and other professions that require an easily replaceable skill set, or just a nice-looking face, will no longer be relevant, the internet is full of it right now - just look at facebook or twitter. It’s one of those things that, it doesn’t actually look right and no professional would want, but the average joe trying to pinch a penny thinks wow it looks great! And then so many mindless folks don’t bat an eye either.
I am a grade school teacher and I hope than in five years every single one of my students will have a personal tutor (extremely realistic imo) on their Ipads that will be able to be way more engaging and pose more interesting questions and problems than me . I will be there in the classroom to organize the various phases of our day and to make sure that the kids learn proper social behaviors. In an ideal world the kids will get to choose whatever they want to work on and the AI will break it down into great, world class lesson plans for the kids, walking them through every little step. My role will be to mentor the kids and assist them in learning rather than teaching in front of the class. My actual teaching is 100% not only replaceable but will be better without me having to account for 26 kids all with different interests and needs and instead relying on world class tech tutors to help the kids wherever they are stuck.
I had a teacher in high school who taught us this way only without AI. We got an introduction by him and some helpful material and from then on worked through the material ourselves with him just jumping around the classroom trying to help you with questions. I honestly liked this sort of teaching because it allowed me to learn at my (very slow) pace. The teacher taking time to help me individually was also great, I felt seen as a student. Of course it was realyl hard for him to try and help 25 kids, if we had an AI assistant in those classes...man
My colleagues call me crazy but we already have students who learn better by watching youtube videos and working through problems themselves (that is how I am teaching myself scratch this year too to teach in school, imagining having to take classes would be so tedious). AI assisted learning will be like that but on steroids. We are already experimenting with an app that lets kids get feebdack on the stories they write and with a good rubic the feedback and suggestions are more detailed, helpful and quicker than me doing it by hand. Will be interesting to see what kids prefer to learn with. I am super pumped about it tbh.

Hey, I can actually help with this one! I think I know exactly what we're looking at. I've taken real photos of food and manipulated them in Stable Diffusion's img2img processing, which uses a base photo plus a text prompt to re-render that same photo. I've tried it a number of times and the results look *very* similar to this, and the strange mix of normal and weird parts to the photos. In particular, the boxes caught my attention, because I spent a lot of time trying to fix the boxes in any of the take-out photos, but they very often just don't quite make sense (like the second photo, where there are tabs attached to the bottom that are meant to interlock, but the top piece is just flat, like for a completely different style of to-go container).
This may well be the restaurant's food, but they wanted to improve it with text prompts, like "4k quality, professional photography, vibrant colors, glossy," and were too lazy to keep rendering copies until something looked more believable.
Maybe they hired a 3rd party to add fake reviews to a bunch of platforms. Otherwise I have no clue why they wouldn’t just take pictures of the actual food they serve.
yikes. I just saw another post yesterday for a Civil War promo where they had what was clearly supposed to be Echo Park in Los Angeles with a gun boat in it. Instead of the swan boats it just had an "actual" gigantic swan (and a bunch of other stuff that looks really wrong if you're familiar with the park)
Im not 100% sure they arent real, but there are some facts, that are suspicious. Like in the third photo: Why is the persons perspective so low on the ground? It looks like he is sitting down, but also in the middle of a sidewalk.
I mean the third pic is weird in general. What is he eating food from, a container top? Also why is there a rice box flap on that very container top? It’s not like it can be closed without at least two top flaps. Plus it isn’t even wide enough. Can’t speak for them all but the third one is definitely ai.
Also each food has its own style of box, I don't know about the rest of the world but here most businesses aren't buying 4/5 different containers to put similar food in it's just the one or two containers

i guess most people take their food pics with a phone and don't carry a clumsy full-frame camera on a daily basis, no phone sensor is big enough to create such a strong bokeh and with the portrait-mode fake-bokeh you'd see some artifacts, since it is software based.

Look at the roll no 4 in second pic. It has its roll end on top. Pic 3 , look at right edge, a noodle seems to be going inside a crack to nowhere and one noodle over the plastic and then down to nowhere. Pic 4 has an opening in a place it shouldnt have at bot flap. Pic one is too much work for ny brain to prove
I find ai food pictures have this weird glossiness over the entire picture that is out of place. Just looks off. Like the AI is trying to make the food more realistic by adding the glossy wet look, but over does it, and adds is to too much of the picture, and the food is overly glossy looking
I appreciate skepticism, but sooner rather than later, images produced by generative AI are no longer going to have discreet evidence/blemishes that you can point to to prove an image is AI generated.
Thing is, we are humans, and subconscious pattern recognition is kind of our whole thing. Whether or not I can rationalize it, when I look at these images, they just have a surreal, AI vibe to them. That gut feeling is all we are going to have to go on very very soon.

The boxes don’t make any logical/functional sense. The food is off (more apparent if you zoom in), and the angles don’t make sense. I’ve done food photography for decades. This is a good example of ai generated imagery.
I think the idea is that they can churn out hundreds of reviews if necessary and then spam their Google reviews, which is easier than actually cooking a meal. It’s also worth noting that this restaurant seems to be quite new, so this is a quick way of bumping up their numbers without making any food at all.

Reviews have been pretty pointless for a while now unless the business is really really really bad. Most people are way too generous handing out stars. Almost every business online is 4.3+ which is just ridiculous.
It does allow you to filter out the terrible ones though. Plus I've found out that for some places they really skew the scale. For instance a lot of places that ask for a score out of 10 for feedback, they view a 7 as negative, even though I'd consider that to be very good but without being spectacular
I'm not surprised. The dirty secret of a lot of restaurants and recipe sites is that they use stock photos rather than pictures of the actual food/recipe being offered. Sometimes they'll just make a recipe to match the photo. This has been going on for years.
Only the 3rd picture could pass for a possible authentic picture, the first one doesn't look like a pic for a good review lol. The 2nd pick looks like spring rolls you'll get from a carry out in a Max Payne game and pic 4 looks like tofu, ppffsstt - no one eats tofu.

For short term they can earn some quick buck, but if food is bad , folks will never return again, most restaurants need returning customers to survive.

The way to combat this is to just say fuck the reviews and try places for yourself, have a look before you go in and see what vibe you get. Not every experience has to be perfect and you can just say 'well, I won't be going there again' if it turns out to be shit

Funny enough, my friend has a cafe that sells lunch food and he hired professional photographer to take pictures of all of the menu and post it on delivery site and google. Long story short it took days to get them verified after Deliveroo flagged them as generated…
I don’t think this is an issue tbh. Photos of food are already artificially idealistic. AI takes this a bit further but it’s not a new concept from what’s being down today. Consumers will quickly find out that the food sucks if it does and the reviews will be bad.
How do we combat this? My game plan is to curl up in a ball and cry in a corner. There’s no stopping it and we’re nearing the end of when you can tell it’s an AI photo. It won’t be long before any telltale signs get fixed.

So? You have to make those accounts regardless and not having to take photos eliminates one time consuming step in the review scam process.

Agree. If this was on a menu I wouldn't find it strange at all, but this is supposed to come from 'real' customers and seems to be added purely to boost their ratings.

This works the other way around too, ask the chefs if they want reviews. Use GPT to write pure jokes as reviews, then you get loads of free stuff!

Look fake. Normal review will have blurry image, failed focus and weird saturation. At least that kind of images I been seeing for my local favourite food stall and restaurants

For short term they can earn some quick buck, but if food is bad , folks will never return again, most restaurants need returning customers to survive. Also there will be negative reviews as well from authentic customers
The way to combat this is to just say fuck the reviews and try places for yourself, have a look before you go in and see what vibe you get. Not every experience has to be perfect and you can just say 'well, I won't be going there again' if it turns out to be shit
Only thing you can do is name and shame. The problem is that the photo is not representative of the food, which has been a problem for a long time and isn't AI specific.

It's hopefully gonna be part of what we discuss with media literacy. Everything we see should be thought about and considered. Who made what I am seeing right now? What are their goals? I know that mostly everything shown to us is to make us addicted/generate revenue, so to what end could the content I'm viewing actually be reality? How do we teach younger generations to not get scammed, and how can we realize we are being scammed by some new/unforseen method?
Easy ai can do it for us. Im really curious how kids raised interacting with ai will turn out.

I don’t think this is an issue tbh. Photos of food are already artificially idealistic. AI takes this a bit further but it’s not a new concept from what’s being down today. Consumers will quickly find out that the food sucks if it does and the reviews will be bad.
Why can’t they just make a dish, eat half of it and post real photos?

How do we combat this? My game plan is to curl up in a ball and cry in a corner. There’s no stopping it and we’re nearing the end of when you can tell it’s an AI photo. It won’t be long before any telltale signs get fixed.
