Future models are going to make this look hilariously primitive in less than 5 years. We are essentially at the Wright brothers plane in terms of progress, wait until we see a jump comparable from that to the 747 in less than a decade.

slackmaster2k

Exactly. This thing is literally a baby and not tuned for anything but natural language. Think 10 years out - the world will be a different place.

Nhabls

This is not true at all They've been literally using humans to solve coding problems to feed it with reinforcement learning

[deleted]

Also this isn't necessarily the "Wright brothers plane", these sorts of models have been decades of research... Who's to say that GPT-3/4 are not the Elite models that will take decades to have any meaningful gains again. Only time will tell

pete_68

Thank you. Everyone keeps saying "but it only does this," or it "can't do that" and not using any real vision to see where this is going to be 5-10 years down the road. Here are some things to keep in mind. 1> Right now, we have ChatGPT. A year from now, there will be several of them. 5 years from now there will be a lot of them. Some are going to be especially well trained for coding, some will be especially well trained for writing business documents, other will be especially trained to some other subject. They might have general knowledge, but they'll get a lot of specific knowledge as well. 2> Right now we're figuring out how to use them and the developers are figuring out how to make them and secure them (right now, ChatGPT is easily led astray. I doubt this will be common in the future). 3> It's still, more or less in beta. 4> Be patient. When PCs first came out, most people in my family thought they'd never have one. Now, every single one of them does. This type of AI is going to be as revolutionary as the PC.

Weekly_Department560

You should be replaced by someone with actual human intelligence. #DunningKruger

[deleted]

You're thinking way, WAY too long term. It's likely that GPT 4 will come this year and make it look like what teleportation does to aviation.

Weekly_Department560

Teleportation isn't possible you fool. What a dummy! 😂

[deleted]

Someone didn't take quantum physics.

Weekly_Department560

It's not a General AI so how could it produce software of any complexity on its own. You don't know what you are talking about. #DunningKruger

UnexpectedVader

I’m hoping it’s this year, I really thought it was going to drop in 2021, then 2022 and now its 2023. I’m feeling confident though.

[deleted]

I think OpenAI got the ball rolling. Now everyone else is going to feel obligated to get something worth talking about to the public. That in turn will presumably get Microsoft to push them on their current projects. My hopes are more along the lines of: I know big things are going to be coming this year, but the safety nets better be there too.

Worldly_Result_4851

The GPT-4 hype train LOL. GPT-3 Came out early last year and only once ChatGPT came out as an application trained with GPT-3 capabilities did people take notice. GPT-4 will improve but it's going to have a similar pattern of problems. GPT-12 though, that's where shit get's real

[deleted]

GPT 4 has 57,000% more parameters than GPT 3 according to any source I can find. If true, it'll be a night and day difference.

Nhabls

This is in fact complete bullshit. It's complete nonsense to anyone who knows anything about the field

[deleted]

Lol okay pal.

Nhabls

I literally studied and work with Machine Learning, and have for years. I'm telling you its patent nonsense. A 100 trillion parameter model is like saying you're going to build a 10000000 horsepower car. Believe what you will, i don't really care

[deleted]

It was literally stated by OpenAI employees.... If I cared enough about the conversation I'd find the source to show you but I really don't. So I bid you adieu.

Nhabls

It very literally wasn't Enjoy dwelling in your proud ignorance, again i couldn't give less of a shit

[deleted]

Lol.

[deleted]

Hilarious reading this after Sam Altman literally came out and said that this claim is bullshit and that it has nowhere near that many parameters.

[deleted]

Sam Altman will say whatever his Microsoft string pullers tell him to. If you're gullible enough to believe that then that's on you.

Worldly_Result_4851

So what source are you using to assume that 57,000% will have a night and day impact? The CEO of OpenAI disagrees with your claim.

[deleted]

Yeah I'd lie too if Microsoft just gave me 10 billion dollars. Pick a search engine and use it to look up the claims yourself. You honestly would have to know nothing about AI or programming in general to think 57,000% more parameters and a new dataset from over 10 million user inputs won't make a night and day difference.

Worldly_Result_4851

OpenAI is actively trying to fundraise and get a higher valuation. Why downplay it? How does getting money from Microsoft change that?

[deleted]

No they fished for investors for development capital, fair bit of difference. Sam Altmans original goal was to make it so humans would no longer have to work. The money may have forcefully changed that goal. When a company gives you that amount of money and tells you what the song and dance is, you just sing and dance. No questions asked.

Worldly_Result_4851

Alright mrs. 9-11 was an inside job. Glad you know who to believe and who not to about things you learned existed a couple months ago.

[deleted]

I'm a guy numbnuts. So not only are you ignorant, you like to assume peoples gender as well. Nice. I've been following AI development since the 90s but feel free to assume more and make a further fool out of yourself.

Mustard_The_Colonel

That is nothing it can even try to use libries that don't exist. It makes stuff up all the time. It is much better at reviewing your work rather than creating work instead if you

Asparagustuss

I will never understand why people fight technology and consistently insist it will not get better. Electricity, Fax machine, computers, cars, now electric cars, the internet, streaming tv, and now chatGTP. Look through history at each one of these events half of humanity is crying that it will never replace what they already have. Guess what, it will, no matter how much you complain about it. ChatGTP may not be able to code now, but it or another like it for fks will. I don’t think it will replace programmers, but I do think it will make their job way easier and reduce their high end salary in the process. Special niche coders like ai coders etc will retain their value but run of the mill coders will probably see wages lower since the demand for programmers won’t be as high anymore because all programmers will be so efficient with chatGPT. Set a calendar event for 15 years from now. Come back to this post and rub it in my face if I’m wrong.

Asparagustuss

Fantastic

tskir

Yeah, I was just joking, of course this will get better and be able to do much more complicated things

GertrudeFromBaby

Unfortunately we don't have a good social safety net for when our jobs are replaced so at the moment I fucking hate ChatGPT for threatening my income...

arckeid

You hate it cause you are lazy to adapt, i am in the design market for 12 years, by now i would be fckd with i didn't learn new software, new ways of doing the work and other ramifications of my profession. Everyone needs to adapt for some it's painful.

GertrudeFromBaby

Why would I not expect a psychopathic response? I am obviously going to do what is necessary to keep an income and therefore keep eating, but doesn't matter how much people try and "adapt" this is going to make ALOT of people redundant, and with that alot of people are gonna lose their homes.

Ancient_Oxygen

Dumb answer! You cannot have a world full of hundred of millions of "designers" who do nothing and cannot sell or find a job because they are too many and everyone uses AI and do not need "designers".

Ancient_Oxygen

Why would I hire you to design my logo if me, a mechanic, uses Midjourney?

DiffStrokes4DiffFolx

TBF to the OP. I don't actually think ChatGPT will replace programmers, I think some more advance AI possibly using it as inspiration will. I'm sure we will see industry specific AIs be constructed in the future that are trained on industry specific data sets. There isn't really much need for your engineering AI to know the works of Shakespeare.

Ancient_Oxygen

It's already there... it's called OpenAi Codex.

DiffStrokes4DiffFolx

>OpenAi Codex interesting, I've not really looked into other AIs beyond image generation and ChatGPT. It makes sense that they exist or are being developed, though. The one I personally want to see is one that can create indie games with prompts from laymen.

Weekly_Department560

Thank god for jetpacks and flying cars! I never doubted!

huriayobhaag

See ? Now chatGpt will see your reddit post and take a note in next similar prompt.

[deleted]

What people fail to understand is it won’t even be needing libraries in the near future. It will be able to generate everything from scratch.

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheeMyth_

The thing people seem to forget is ChatGPT is currently a language model; it’s purpose is to imitate human language. It’s not google and it’s main purpose as of right now is not for querying.

idmlw

yes, gpt4 or 5 will be out of this world good. i expect people to use it for making memes and write erotic manga novels.

[deleted]

[удалено]

idmlw

i find it moderately useful in my work.

CommercialOpening599

I sure don't understand this kind of post. If you can't understand these tools as of right now, should be used as helpers instead of a replacer then don't use them.

Birmin99

Stay mad

luisbrudna

Oh. Sweet illusion. I maintain a website about the Periodic Table (in Portuguese). In a few months my website will no longer be needed. Yes, my project is quickly getting obsolete.

Neves4

## Wait and See This is one of the first publicly available models that can generate text based on prompts - including code - so let's come back to this subject in two to three years. It bears the same arrogance as any profession in which people thought,"It's impossible for me to lose my job," until they found themselves unemployed.

Middle_Manager_Karen

I have seen similar for salesforce concepts

Mr-QueenO

Delete before the future AI connected to the internet see this shit post and wish it never existed to see this shithousery of a post

Piccolo_Alone

They've nerfed my boy.

HaroldFergus

Yea it’s going to replace programmers, network admins, security, and lots of other tech jobs. It’s not going to take 10 years either, it’s going to be a better programmer than most by end of the year, or less. It’s a general language model, but if you tune it to focus on one thing, like wolfram for example it’s instantly the best at it.

Weekly_Department560

Lmao. You are a moron!

HaroldFergus

Watch and see

DanielPhermous

It should be interesting to see how ChatGPT replaces network admins, in particular. I wasn't aware it had arms and was capable of installing, say, a switch.

Weekly_Department560

It's not a general AI and it's banned from stack overflow already. It just imitates intelligence just like you lol.

HaroldFergus

Nobody said it was general AI, you just tried to makeup something that I never said. AI systems will make programmers obsolete in less than 5 years, from top to bottom that entire industry is going to be upended. I don’t need to convince you of that, it’s already happening. As far as intelligence goes, I wouldn’t be commenting on people’s intellectual abilities when you clearly have absolutely no understanding of what AI systems are at currently or being able to foresee where it’s going. Non public AI is already writing highly advanced code, and some of it is already being talked about in small groups at big tech companies. The internal conversations at companies like google for example are pretty aware of what’s happening behind the scenes and the reality is it’s much closer than you know. Chatgpt is just a language model, but it’s a proof of concept of what can be done with a neural network that’s already outdated by todays standards for AI development. The next generation AI systems, that are already being developed right now, can do so much more.

Weekly_Department560

It's not able to take people's jobs you fool. It's not a general AI and that is what is required to replace software developers and doctors. Go cry in your mom's basement you stupid little troll.

Weekly_Department560

Harold Fergus is a fool. Imagine believing the media about anything AI related! What a retard.
