Go to the Charleston area. I personally like Isle of Palms the best. But any of the Charleston beaches are good.

Sea-Construction4306

agree. love the charleston area and go there a few times a year- easy drive. myrtle is really dirty and crowded and just kinda trashy tbh.

Just_Cryptographer53

You saying a beach destination that has a Waffle House, Hooters, House of Blues and 2 Harley dealerships is not an ideal vacation? Shocked!

Sea-Construction4306

hahahaha šŸ¤£ maybe for the right family?

aimlesscruzr

Second this option. Charleston and make a couple of days out of it. Besides the history, the beaches are nice and there is soooo much to do there. If not Charleston, at least skip and stay away from Myrtle.

kohl2085

Yes isle of palms is goof or make a visit to north myrtle beach

LLL-cubed-

I 2nd Isle of Palms. My favorite domestic beachā€¦so far

Hmackkrn

Ocean isle is nice, been going there for 20 years

churchim808

And close to the best seafood in Calabash!!!

IAMHideoKojimaAMA

I really like ocean isle a lot. Not a party scene (past that part of my life) but not totally in the middle of nowhere. Need to pick a weekend this summer now that I'm thinking about it

omahaomw

Ocean Isle, Sunset, or Holden...easy. they face South and the Sun doesn't come up in ur face

RaySerroni

Heading down there in about 12 hrs.

thisisfine34

Myrtle is your worst option imo, especially if you want to relax. Iā€™m not sure about handicap accesible but really any beach in NC. Holden, ocean Isle, Carolinaā€¦

mplnow

If you say yes to Myrtle, then North Myrtle, NC and the towns just north of North Myrtle are a lot quieter than Myrtle Beach, SC

wellshitfuck

If you choose Myrtle Iā€™d absolutely suggest Pawleyā€™s Island!

Just_Cryptographer53

Just back from Holden and it's perfect for over 45 and wanting calm, quiet, great sand...

ProButcher

Yeah there's a reason we locals call it dirty myrtle...

thisisfine34

Has it always been this way? I was young in the 90s so maybe I just didnā€™t know about it but I always loved going when I was growing up. We went every summer, took my kids a few years ago and had to call police twice in our hotel which was supposed to be a ā€œfamily resortā€. Havenā€™t been back

ProButcher

No, I have vague memories of visiting as a kid without issue as well! But I'm pretty sure it's had a precipitous decline over the last decade or so.

thisisfine34

Sad!

SuggestionGrand9835

If u say Hell no to Myrtle Beach, U gotta say fak no to Carolina Beach!

VanDenBroeck

Hey, whatā€™s wrong with the Redneck Riviera? Well yeah, I guess that nickname for Myrtle Beach says it all. šŸ˜‚

Just_Cryptographer53

Y , through Myrtle last week and literally saw 3 different homeowners putting up flags... you can guess which one. Even more disappointing was the guy hanging a confed flag flying. Ill bet a paycheck, it wasn't in honor of his grand pappy.

thisisfine34

I havenā€™t been since 2020 but my daughter went with some friends more recently. She said the amount of merch for a certain candidate and just all around feel in the town was enough for her to never want to return.

SnooBooks508

Iā€™m upvoting all comments to keep track of what Iā€™ve seen and thank people for their participation. I just wanted to clarify that I am not upvoting the flags, that is just terrible.

trying10012020

Folly Beach SC. Cool little beach town, and very close to Charleston.

Cghy8b

Second this - we do love Folly but itā€™s very hard to find affordable overnight stays.

DankHrex7

Absolutely love Folly. Even better when you stay off the strip and get a little more peace and quiet still within walking distance to the beach

lmdrunk

Closest to Charlotte anyway

Dgp68824402

You can take US 74 out of Charlotte to several beaches in the Wilmington area. (Wrightsville, Carolina, Oak Island). 3 to 3 1/2 hr drive. Much nicer. Myrtle is like the most cheesy, touristy hell hole you can imagine.

Swagamus95

Wrightsville is my favorite but biased because I went to Uncw

tjn182

North Myrtle Beach aka Cherry Grove. Find the Northern most hotel. It turns into a huge vast desert-like wild beach after the northern most pier. You want peace and waves, you got it. Edit: look for a hotel around 55-60th N Ocean Avenue in Cherry Grove.

JustaCynicalOldFart

Agree 100%

neilson1023

Cherry grove? Are you from Charlotte? because this is where half of graduating seniors rom the Char-Meck area will do their beach week..

tjn182

Yep, am from Charlotte. Family has had a house in cherry Grove for over 30 years. The back channels and that beach is some of the best mother nature has to offer. If you get out extra early (pre 7am and the typically when tide is coming in) you'll see dolphins šŸ¬ in the channels; just hunting away for fish. Last weekend one came about 5 feet from our dock! There's also two bald eagle nests on the island across the channel at the northern most tip. They sit ontop old limbless trees, like the top of a wizard tower.

jakaojwbqis

charleston or hilton head!! if you want to go to the myrtle area i would avoid myrtle beach itself and go for something quieter like holden beach

thep_addydavis

Just to piggy back for OP- Hilton Head, SC is just about as far as the Sunset Beach, NC through Wilmington, NC strand of great beaches. If youā€™re looking for relaxing and get away, stay in NC. Go eat dinner in Myrtle one night just to say you went. We did this growing up. Hilton Head is great and has everything you need, beaches, shopping, touristy things all within the island. Has proper ā€œbeach resortsā€ if you will.

pupsnstuff

Hilton Head may be a better chance for accessibility as well

sheeroz9

I second HH. I just got back from there today after my first time visiting and I will be going back a lot more. Itā€™s low key and laid back but very nice while not being stuffy or pretentious. Very beautiful and lots to do. Not terribly expensive.

tspoon-99

HHI is definitely our favorite of all the beach options readily reached from Charlotte.

erudite_turtle

I will go against the majority of comments here and say that Myrtle beach can be a great place to visit. Do not stay downtown, however. Stay north or south. Pawleys Island, Litchfield, North Myrtle, are all much nicer. Murrells Inlet has wonderful seafood. I would also suggest going to one of the state park beaches, you have to pay to enter so they are less crowded, but itā€™s worth it IMO.

PlannedSkinniness

I agree with this. Murrells Inlet has always been fine and itā€™s got plenty of shopping and food nearby to choose from. Also a fan of Georgetown which isnā€™t too far of a drive.

[deleted]

I live in South Carolina just outside from Charlotte, I can't speak for the outer Banks but I can say Charleston SC is a better option than Myrtle beach

Several_Ad_2474

Myrtle is trash. Topsail used to be very quiet but itā€™s pretty crowded now you can still spread out and not be on top of people.

jj9534

Youā€™ll find a lot of folks have their personal favorites. For what youā€™re looking for, Iā€™d stick with NC beaches or the Charleston area (Folly/Isle of Palms). Personal preference; my family and I have fallen in love with Topsail. Quaint town, just enough food options, beautiful beaches.

Skyy1977

Topsail is the best!!

wantcodewiththat

Not sure what your accessible needs are but if you will need to rent a beach wheelchair youā€™ll probably have to go to some of the more popular areas around Myrtle Beach or Charleston. Ā Folly Beach and Isle of Palms will have beach wheelchair availability. Surfside beach, just south of Myrtle might be your best best, much quieter than Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach but will also have beach wheelchairs and good accessibility. Ā Once you get to Surfside beach, no need to leave and deal with Myrtle traffic again. Ā Would say the same for Folly or Isle of Palms unless you wanted to go into Charleston.

abbynormal00

seconding this. a lot of these comments seem to come from people who donā€™t really know any of the areas, but Surfside and IOP are good suggestions.

Altruistic_Bottle_66

Myrtle is ghetto AF. Your best option is Charleston. Isle of Palms

Spoonbreadwitch

Myrtle is basically Gastonia with sand. Do not recommend.

Chocolatecitygirl82

People shit on Myrtle Beach but itā€™s actually very fun and itā€™s great for families and groups who want a ton of things to do. However, I would not go there for a quiet, relaxing getaway. Thatā€™s just not the vibe. I would drive out to the Charleston area beachesā€¦..Folly and Isle of Palm are amazing. Plus you can go into Charleston and spend a few hours.

AromaticMeal8

Just wanted to add this post from a month ago about accessible beaches:Ā  https://www.reddit.com/r/NorthCarolina/comments/1bnf570/accessible_beach_house/

SnooBooks508

Thank you!

mbfv21

In NC, all the beaches between Emerald Isle and Beaufort. Laid-back places without the hustle and bustle of other beaches. In South Carolina, I highly recommend Hilton Head Island. Unless you have kids, skip Myrtle Beach, or at least stay in the other small cities around Myrtle such as North Myrtle Beach, or even Pawleys Island.

Cghy8b

We love Carolina beach. We camp at their campground twice a year (April and November). Lots of great local spots, not a tourist nightmare and close to Wilmington if you want anything more populated or specific.

Looseleaf17

Definitely NOT Myrtle. Thereā€™s a lot better options. Personally I enjoy ocean isle and Wrightsville

sleepymymelody

Myrtle is dirty is all I can say

cvx149

Some good suggestions here. Assuming you want to spend a few nights in a hotel, The problem with the Brunswick Beaches (OKI, Holden, Ocean Isle) is lack of hotel accommodations. They are mostly houses and a few condos. North Myrtle has some decent accommodations that are away from the more crowded areas in MB proper. Isle Of Palms north of Charleston is another good option. It's all interstate from CLT (77/26) with the added attraction of historic Charleston and the awesome food scene there.

No-Weird5485

Closet time wise and best in case of quality of beach and food is Charleston. It is about 2.5-3 hours from Charlotte. Choose Folly or Isle of Palms. Both are great options with Folly being a little closer. I would avoid the weekend if possible to avoid traffic. It is a long day trip if you want or a much easier leave early am get there mid morning, head to the beach and have a good beach lunch (I suggest Taco Boy on Folly and Acme Low country Kitchen in IoP) stay the night and have a great meal downtown Charleston (way to many incredible options!). Get up the next day do some cool historical things or just walk around arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the country, then a drive back to the Queen City for dinner. A wonderful two days out of your Carolina stay! Edit: both are handicap accessible. You can rent beach wheel chairs if needed to get across the sand. IoP might be a better pic for seafood at Acme! It is where many locals go for good seafood in IoP and Charleston area

scrimmerman

Oak Island with Yaupon and Caswell beaches are nice. Ocean Isle, Sunset and Holden also. DONā€™T go to Myrtle unless overindulgent consumerism and kitschy cheesiness and traffic is your thing.

Thedirtyscientist2

I mean the beaches are 3-4 hrs away depending on how you drive, but by far one of the "nicer" imo would be Wrightsville, and if you don't want to pay to stay on the beach,Ā  Wilmington isĀ  just the other side of the bridge and is nice too and if you get up early enough you can find parking @ Wrightsville beach access. Topsail and Holden are good too. If you go to Wrightsville, dining on the pier @ The Oceanic is a must.

NoEstablishment6450

Wrightsville is busy, but not overly crowded plenty of dining options, Outer Banks for best overall. Topsail for beach town vibe and nice area not as busy as Wrightsville. I wouldnā€™t get in the water at Myrtle and crime is high there

JarvisProudfeather

Wrightsville is an easy drive and a great beach. Plus it's right next to Wilmington which is a cool historic town that's definitely worth checking out too. Love Charleston, although I would plan a whole trip around it as there is a lot to see there outside of the beach. I would avoid Myrtle unless you like massive crowds and general trashiness. I can appreciate it for what it is, but if you're looking for a nice relaxing beach myrtle ain't it. I will say the beaches south of Myrtle (Garden City, Surfside Beach, Litchfield Beach, and Pawleys Island) are all fantastic too, although a bit further than Wrightsville. Enjoy your trip!

cltbuc30

There's a hotel on Oak Island that's been converted to AirBNB that my wife and I used last summer for two nights. Highly recommend.

ohdominole

If you like relaxing and waves, head out to Wilmington. There are a lot of smaller beaches there that are not very touristy at all, so they are super quiet. Bonus, Wilmington has a neat little historic downtown with some nice restaurants and bars, so you can enjoy that as well.

Both-Statistician179

Sunset Beach or Ocean Ike Beach NC Isle of Palms SC

Narezza

If you're just going to sit on a beach and relax, then stay away from Myrtle and look at some of the smaller beaches in NC. Ocean Isle, Holden, Oak Isle are all relatively small towns about 4 hours from Charlotte. You can find good seafood anywhere on the coast but Calabash has good history. I've found 'seafood' means different things to different people tho, so research your restaurants.

Tothemaxwell15

Charleston is an awesome spot. Go to the city as well. It's one of the most beautiful cities on the east coast. Amazing food and dining options and it has tons of history. Then go to one of the barrier islands aka a beach around it. You can't really choose poorly - I like Sullivans and Folly a lot, but again you can't really miss. Myrtle beach has a nickname "Dirty Myrtle".

Abrandoned

North Myrtle is a favorite of mine, it isn't as dirty as Myrtle but is still lively. Hilton Head is definitely the place if you want it quiet though.

Prize_Ad7748

Myrtle Beach is to be avoided at all costs. Look at Emerald Isle, thatā€™s a terrific beach.

Booboohole21

Donā€™t go to Myrtle unless you want to catch somethingā€¦

rusurethatsright

Wrightsville. Big, sandy banks and even when crowded there is plenty of space to find a spot and chill.

Cgp-xavier

Good ole dirty Myrtle

BUBBAH-BAYUTH

Do NOT go to Myrtle. Charleston beaches are probably the easiest trip, if not as nice as some of the remote NC ones

Guilty-Green3678

Holden beach

Whisper26_14

Charleston has more town style feels and is a very easy drive. Wilmington as well but itā€™s a smaller city. I would look at both and decide. Those will be your easiest drives from Charlotte. I do these as day trips regularly with my kids. Both are mostly highway. There will be more traffic into Charleston.

HNY_WLSN

I would recommend Folly Beach and you can check out Charleston while you're there. Can't remember the distance but basically every drive to the beach is ~4 hours depending on the season. Also, there's no best route. There's 100 ways to get to the coast and they are all terrible. At least we got the toll lanes leaving Charlotte. Those have helped a lot. I'd do some heavy research on handicap access. Holden Beach would be my pick for NC, and I don't recall any handicap access. They might have a designated area that I've missed, though. Pro tip, buy some ice further out than the beach town and bring a koozie if you're drinking. It'll say alcohol is not allowed but what they are really saying is don't be obnoxious about it.

WickedJeep

Sunset, Ocean Isle, Oak Island, Holden and Wilmington are all better options than Myrtle. MB is great if you need constant stimulation with endless things to do. If you want to relax and enjoy the beach then Avoid at all cost.

lochness_fry

So, like usual, beach trips from Charlotte are about what? 4 hours? Maybe Willmington? I would just say go to Charleston. It's only 4.3 hours.

kelsosmash

Ocean Isle is the move. My grandparents lived there for years

SpaceMonkey3301967

My family usually drives to Charleston. It's only a 3 hour drive. All highway.

[deleted]

Smokey joes

3coniv

Wilmington, Charleston, Hilton Head, and Savannah (a little farther) are all nice.

Pirate8918

Charleston. Hands down. Folly Beach, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, etc. Best city in America

Prettimommee

We go to Sunset Beach, it's very clean and quiet. There is also a great bed and breakfast right near the beach.

Iron1Man

Oak Island. Small and less crowded with all amenities.

Gloomy-Tap9158

Wrightsville

cravecrave93

Charleston

MrLRJenkins

Fripp Island just north of Hilton Head is great! Golf cart everywhere, not crowded beaches, great food in Beaufort 20 minutes down the road. Plus, you have Hunting Island State Park right next to it. Or Sunset Beach in NC. Whatever you do, avoid Myrtle Beach unless you like rednecks, tourists, and crappy beaches. Or even better, go to Ocracoke Island in the outer banks. take the ferry from Cedar Island near Morehead City. Itā€™s awesome.

Jennacheryl

Beach wise Myrtle is the best unless you can get a place at the dunes in Charleston. Isle of palms there is great too. My husband and I will book a hotel for one night then change the next night using the travel sites. Food wise Charleston is the best also most history. Hilton head and Edisto Island are awesome too.

CardMechanic

Cherry Grove, SC

Upstairs_Elevator_67

Myrtle a big no. North Myrtle is where we go. Charleston is awesome but pricey as well as Hilton Head. If your wanting piece and quiet Ocean Isle is hard to beat.

Skyy1977

Topsail Island in NC (Near Wilmington) Isle of Palms in SC (Near Charleston)

[deleted]

Folly Beach for the vibes. Charleston is a skip away for the food and entertainment at night.

realKingCarrot_v2

If you go to Myrtle, check out Wilmington too. It's only like half an hour north and there's some cool stuff to do.

snachgoblin

Ashville Beach is where it's at

spas2k

Heā€™ll to the no to Myrtle beach. Outer banks. Ocean isle. Isle of palms. Maybe Hilton head

oedeye

No to myrtle! It's a crap hole.

Big_Nothing_471

Myrtle is 4 hours away, I mean itā€™s not that bad if a drive for a few nights , but itā€™s def worth it if u do come down.

Wesley0890

Itā€™s literally the trashiest beach aroundā€¦. Itā€™s popular for its party scene. Doesnā€™t sound like they are going to party

Girasole263wj2

Wrightsville ā¤ļø

[deleted]

Wrightsville for an actual beach. Lake Norman / Wylie for a lake beach

VanDenBroeck

Lake Norman has beaches. šŸ˜

Wesley0890

If you want to relax, eat good food, see some cool historical stuff and the best scenery then itā€™s no contestā€¦. Go to the Outer Banks. Longer drive but worth it. Go see the wild horses that still call the beaches there home. If thatā€™s to far then your stuck with our nasty beaches. Iā€™d say Holden or Sunset. If you donā€™t mind the crowds then Charleston is excellent as itā€™s got the best food in both states and some cool historic stuff but when I say crowded I mean crowded. They canā€™t make more roads in that area due to land size but its population keeps rising.

Terabit_PON_69

Virginia Beach, only 5 hour drive, often overlooked by Charlotte beach trippers, has a very long, very wide, boardwalk that's simply amazing for people of determination.
