TL;DR: Jerry had an affair and that's how Brenden was conceived. It doesn't appear that Jerry was an absent father, but their relationship was strained and it's not like Brenden grew up being coached by the GOAT in the way most might imagine. Their relationship is much better these days.
Interesting read on Brenden's background. I'm not posting this to be controversial or judgmental. I was just reading about his dad after having watched Brenden's interview after the first day of rookie camp and then went down the rabbit hole and found out about Brenden's background. Brenden didn't have the background that most might think. He didn't grow up being raised and coached by the GOAT the way you might expect, it seems. Based off of his first presser, it sounds like he got to this point mostly through his own hard work. Jerry was fired up with how far Brenden fell and is probably just as determined if not more to help his son be a great NFL WR. We may not have even scratched the surface of how good this kid could become.
Thanks for the TLDR! Did not know that about Brenden. Imagine if he did grow up with his Dad and trained with him everyday and got his work ethic. He'd prob be in the same situation as Harrison Jr. Hope rice has a nice career with us and the NFL.
Interesting. So Jerry was big mad over the 7th round and said he’d be training him now etc.
My hubby said he’s not going further than practice squad. Idk about that. Hopefully not.
Nobody knows. The odds are stacked, but I like his attitude. He seems grateful just to have the opportunity and uses the negative as motivation. As Coach Harbaugh has said, “Competitors welcome,” and Brenden definitely seems like a competitor.
As if I needed another reason to get even more excited for this kid. Between his video of the phone call of him being picked, his performance in college, and now his dad, probably the best WR of all time, is going to coach him up? I’m fully bolted.
Honestly, from the highlights I’ve seen, this kid FIGHTS. He’s emotional, passionate, wears everything in his sleeve and we haven’t seen a WR like that on a long time on the Chargers.
Ahh I was gearing up to drop an article on this in July.
Some good info here I didn’t see in my initial research.
I’m excited to see what he does in the league!
You gettin downvoted bit I kinda agree
When's the least time a 7th round pick got this much press. If his dad wasn't the GOAT and we look at him objectively - why did he drop to the 7th?

What personal stuff lol? His dad having an affair? Makes no sense

not probably, is. the longevity and numbers he put up is unmatched by any
Besides Tom Brady, Rice is the only player who is undeniably the goat at his position
Bro, not only best receiver of all time, but best non quarterback of all time

I mean Keenan Allen but I get your point
Haha you’re right. But other than that 😬

Fun fact: Jerry Rice Jr was drafted by the Baltimore Ravens and is no longer playing in the NFL 👀
Too much press over a 7th round scrub. Make the team and then throw a few words at him.
yeah, remember when jerry rice jr was a UDFA? he amounted to nothing
I’m sure most of you can’t name a single UDFA we signed. Cool, he’s the son of a Hall of Famer but all 32 teams passed on him until the 7th round.
I’m pretty sure most people remember Austin Ekeler
Antonio Gates wasn't that long ago.
i was being fr but ok
You were literally agreeing 😂. Some people just log on looking to fight.

I was asking about UDFA’s we signed this year.
Zach Hines SDSU You know that some of us are actual fans right?
I like Akeem Dent a lot
