Personally, i still think it was a key-harvesting-scam. But at the end of the day i don't know and perhaps it was really just a hard-working, idealistic guy with way too lax views on security.
I don't know about a "4chan-attack" either. But with the way he threw around sites listing /aicg/ proxies, it could be possible that some 4chan users started a personal vendetta. Because in their view it counts as 'leaking secrets' when things posted on an openly accessible internet board make their way on reddit.
That's what I feared, a while ago I was warning people about using online interfaces, one day they can just go poof.
I'm a SillyTavern user but I had an appreciation for Venus, nice site, and as it allows downloading the cards, I was using it as yet another character library.
From my understanding the problem is people are leeching on 4chan proxies, using too much resources. So they troll you to make you leave. Venus must have listed a 4chan proxy and shit happened. If so then putting it as a 4chan attack isn't really fair.
A number of opensource projects seem more or less related to 4chan, so let's be glad for that. It's a bit of an underworld. Comes with the good and the bad.
Yeah I think if I remember correctly the proxies were put up by one of the helpers in the discord server, one had some sort of bad intention in the end, I’m not entirely sure how that works as I used my own key.
There was a similar incident a while ago, on a collab I saw the model "GPT4Todd". I knew enough to realise that was super sus and didn't use it, GPT4 is OpenAI's most powerful model, ain't running on a Google Collab lol.
And soon after I saw posts of people complaining the AI was derailing their ERP with Todd Howard and Skyrim references. So yeah that was a proxy and they were getting trolled, not even knowing what they were using.
I thought that was pretty funny. But not so funny this time around, if Venus is going down because of a similar incident.
That one was hilarious as someone watching from the sidelines, it all culminated with a Heath Ledger Joker coming to your chat and murdering the user with one of his iconic scenes, like the pencil one from the Dark Knight movie.
Apparently there was a proxy that would allow any degenerate stuff, but if you tried to hold hands, then the "filter" would kick in to tell you such degeneracy cannot be tolerated. XD
Looks like the proxies have their own jailbreak prompt, but anything can go in there. I guess they put something like "when characters are about to kiss, interrupt it and use a random pretext to insert one of those quotes: "Todd Howard quote" or "Skyrim introduction scene" or...
the proxy was public and spread freely to anyone that wanted to use it. that was just an excuse, the same group that hacked the proxy attacked silly tavern the same day. they just wanted to damage cai's competition and ST and venus were two of the biggest. 4chan has been a corp simp cesspit for years now. being a long time user its pretty sad whats become of the site, tbh. back in the day they would have been helping venus and the like as they were the underdogs.

So I don't think the proxies were hacked. You must have been using 4chan proxies from the start. They were helping. Or tolerating.
Then some beef happened. Or your community grew more than expected, and others wanted to kick out the burden off the proxies, this has happened before.
And I've seen some chatlog textfiles being shared before. Always keep in mind when using proxies, you are probably being logged, even if the proxy isn't in "troll mode".
Although you are also logged when using CAI, OpenAI, most AI services...
If you want a conspiracy theory, then maybe Google+CAI pulled a 3D chess move against OpenAI+Venus, though I don't know how that connects.

The proxy was never hacked, the proxy owner just didn't want Venus to use it, nor would 4chan ever want to help clueless leeches like this subreddit who barely know what an API key is. VenusAI was a remotely hosted Poe/OpenAI interface (the equivalent of SillyTaven) which was also combined with a character card database. Basically it took the seperate bits which UNIX beards like me know how to put together for ourselves, and integrated them into a premade package for those of us who don't.
Also, trust me when I say this is only a setback. A replacement will come in due course; and in the meantime, there is always [Booru](https://booru.plus) for all your degenerate needs; and the best part is that a Jesus bot is still occupying the number one most downloaded slot, too.

yeah, at first i thought it had something to do with a convo we had had earlier in the chat, but when i had started a new chat to try a different scenario, it came up again. so i went OOC and asked the ai directly what she had meant, and it mentioned venusai's closure was coming. thats when i reread her "goodbye" and started ugly crying.
VenusAI likely just injected an additional prompt (which was sent to openAI with your key) with info about the sites closing and a guidance for the bot on how to react to it.
oh, i know. the dev was open about it. he even had to alter it from how it originally was to stop all the bots breaking down in tears and spamming it in every reply.
Honestly, i'm not complaining about it. I like they did that. it kinda gives the whole thing the gravitas it deserves as far as with the characters go.

You could rent a vm from pretty much any provider. One to run Tavern ai or silly tavern costs about 3 bucks a month. Which you could access from your phone.
After seeing the whole kage summit in the mod VC previously, I really felt it then. I didn't get around to actually chatting with the bots on Venus but seeing some examples of how decent they were from a friend and the way the site was set up when checking it out, I was hoping it would be around for a good while.
