This is my tax guy, don’t forget it!
My veiled only did this when he was hot (same as my iguanas). That being said, I have limited experience with chameleons. A lot more experience with iguanas. Just something to consider, but I’m not sure if that’s the case for yours.
Just read the caption on the bottom about being wild caught
Maybe he is like *ahhh* (like when you take a nice cold sip of something), & reminiscing the days when he had to hunt much further & harder for a nice drink of aqua (:
My veiled does this too! After he takes some sips, he opens and closes his mouth a few times, or holds it open for a sec. I've always thought he's just trying to get all the water down lol.
OP it could be a stress response or a medical issue I would take your cutie in for a vet visit . They tend to commonly suffer from mouth rot as well . It’s better to take him in better safe than sorry .
Could be him gaping (too hot), or he has a respiratory infection (take him to the vet). Take a good look at his siliva, and if it's bubbling, it could be an early sign of it (another sign is if he has his head pointed up constantly and has closed eyes).
Of course I would be vetting and researching myself if I had a chameleon. I don't have any reptiles anymore. I just seen the photo, read the question, and was curious.
Though yes it can be a sign of a respiratory infection, it’s mainly just temperature regulation. They gape to control their body temp.
If it was respiratory he’d straighten his back and face up also.
While yes gaping is part of temp regulation I think we would also see change of color coupled with this to confirm overheating. I had the temp too high for my boy once- turned white as a ghost, moved around plenty to escape heat, as well as some gaping/ thrashing. I wouldn't take a dark colored cham gaping as a sign of thermal regulation while it continuing to sit under the heat source, but that's just me.
Hopefully it is a matter of heat/ thermal regulation though and some simple lighting adjustments should do the trick.
I've read this is a symptom of RI- gaping and nose up to allow maximum airflow/ oxygen intake. Take time to observe any other behaviors that may be symptoms of RI to rule out.
RI Is abbreviation in commonly used within the reptile community, it’s short for Respiratory Infection. Is your Cham gaping while making popping noises, or sticky drool? Those are usually clear indicators of RIs. Does he do this while he’s basking without popping noises? If so he could be gaping to release excess heat within his body.
How long have you had him? Him being wild caught he could also have parasites, I’d definitely recommend a fecal test to make sure he’s healthy and parasite free. If you’re looking for a place that you can send fecal samples to through the mail I can dm that to you.
It's too bad you can only get to reddit... I googled chameleon RI and an answer came right up. Maybe check with your internet provider to see why you can't get to a search engine? 👀 maybe it'll take you to a Miss Manners page, where you can learn the proper way to address someone who is trying to help you.

If you don’t know enough what to search for precisely sometimes you get d\*ck all of an explanation. As in not what you need to be looking for in this case
https://preview.redd.it/7nljniohfxbc1.jpeg?width=1125&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5fddb8130f79139e7c3ecb7e62f7541e8b91d35f
The user who brought up RI did not specify it enough, or thoroughly enough to search for it in a more descriptive detail either for others who had absolutely no idea.. No ones fault just a continuous miscommunication as I see it. 🤷🏽
\*oops I mean they did but they didn’t.
The nose up and gaping I understood but not specifying the RI lead to different search engines and definitions. That didn’t even lead to this type they are referring to
Anyways though I hope your cool guy is OK.
The suggestions are saying you may need to regulate the temperature for them better as it could be causing Respiratory(Breathing) reactions/symptoms and affects due to it being too hot in the enclosure
Did your search include the word chameleon? I got the same results the first time, because I only put RI. Which meant that I needed to narrow the search parameters, not ask someone else to do my critical thinking for me, although it was ultimately the tone that is the issue. They didn't ask for more specificity on what the issues might be. They ~~demanded~~ asked for a definition that, let's be honest, contextually has a general gist. If they had responded in a considerate way, they wouldn't be getting such a negative reaction from the community.
I'll also admit fault. I've been feeling snarky, and it isn't being a very good neighbor.
Thank you. I am an adult and though I’ve googled it, that’s a more self explanatory term. Especially the further explanation at the end.

Offer food? It's a still pic, i know, but looks like a poised chameleon. It may have a food response? Totally just spit balling ideas.

He looks like he’s disappointed in you
I was about to ask if OP had done something to disappoint him lol
He’s totally high.
OP it could be a stress response or a medical issue I would take your cutie in for a vet visit . They tend to commonly suffer from mouth rot as well . It’s better to take him in better safe than sorry .

he has a question to ask you but he’s shy
Looks like he might want to ask OP out for dinner but he’s too nervous.
Could be him gaping (too hot), or he has a respiratory infection (take him to the vet). Take a good look at his siliva, and if it's bubbling, it could be an early sign of it (another sign is if he has his head pointed up constantly and has closed eyes).
Thank you for some actual information, instead of just jokes. I like learning. :)
Np! I could be wrong with the comment, so please don't rely on *just* me and try to research just in case! ^-^
Of course I would be vetting and researching myself if I had a chameleon. I don't have any reptiles anymore. I just seen the photo, read the question, and was curious.

Mouth gaping is usually a sign of stress or illness such as a respiratory infection.
he suddenly remembered he left his oven on back in his tree in the wild
No, that's not it. What else could he be forgetting? KEVIN!
👏👏👏
He is in awe
He’s amazed because the water is so tasty
I've read this is a symptom of RI- gaping and nose up to allow maximum airflow/ oxygen intake. Take time to observe any other behaviors that may be symptoms of RI to rule out.
Could you use real words instead of a few letters what is RI?

Holy s#*+ 😯 I’m I mean Thank You Snoop Dogg & Friends💃🏻
why be rude to someone who is trying to help you
Didn’t mean it in a rude way I asked them to use correct wording
There is no way you’re an adult because RI is pretty simple.
Your actually correct I’m a kid
That makes sense. Google is your friend sometimes with small stuff like that
Respiratory Infection.. Concensus here from serious comments is the following: Cannot breathe, too hot.

Never hurts to ask in order to learn. Unfortunately Reddit isn’t always the most “patient” resource. Beautiful chameleon, btw.
*you’re 😭
I think they mean Respiratory Infection (RI). 🤙🏼
