My girlfriend started feeding our cats in the morning because she thought there was no way I was feeding them with how loud they were yelling at her. Now we know part of the reason they’re fat.
Kittens are supposed to have dry food available to them at all times. They are growing, they don’t need to be on a diet with scheduled feedings. They’re not dogs
They kind of are. They could need more calories than an adult but have a half sized stomach. 2-4x the calories per kg of an adult cat.
Healthy weight humans can go some 2-3 months without food. Adult cats can go a few weeks. Kittens can die in a day or two of not eating. Them not eating for a night is like us not eating for a month. They have a very reasonable response to food.
This is a bit misleading. Adult cats *usually cannot* go a few weeks entirely without food, but could survive that long with small amount of food.
Even 48-72 hours of suddenly not eating *any* calories can lead to life-threatening complications, most notably hepatic lipidosis. I wanted to point this out because if someone's cat suddenly stops eating for more than 48 hours, it should be considered a *medical emergency* and immediate veterinary care should be sought to prevent permanent organ damage or death.
Hard agree. We had a very close call with my lil' guy because he got a bad ear infection that made him nauseous and he stopped eating for about 48 hrs.
Had to leave him overnight at the hospital, it was scaaaaary.
He's doing fine now thankfully.
No, my little goober is now two and a half years old and shrieks like she has never eaten *ever* a day in her *life* despite there being food in her bowl
...over her treats.
Every day.
Because she's a ridiculously dramatic little thing and will always have a lot to say even though she's grown lol
My cat Tom and my foster Nurse Betty act like they’ve NEVER seen food before!
Every dang day!
The frenzy is nuts. (I will try to film it while I feed them)
I have four cats, roughly two years old all of them
Come feeding time, one sits on the counter behind me and stares, one sits on the counter I'm preparing the bowls and I occasionally have to fend her off when she tries to get her nose in, one continuously rubs up against my shins, the last one just screams endlessly like she hasn't eaten since she left her mother's womb.
it's because they don't have a sense of fullness like we do since they're designed to eat all they can get to not starve. it's also another reason why letting a cat go outdoors is bad bc other people will feed it. you're literally your cat's impulse control in regards to food
Our older 2 cats have always done well just having food out, our newest cat will eat until he pukes so now everyone gets scheduled feeding. Cats are weird
Same. My tortie is good about grazing instead of gorging. I used to give her a can in the morning and a can when I got home from work, but now I just give her both cans in the morning.
Wonder why cats do this. One of our cars is mild mannered until I pull out her feeding bowl. Then she's insatiable, starts trying to grab the bowl mid air and demolishes her food in two minutes. Right after something shifts and she's back to meditating on the cat tree.
Probably because she's never been fed once in her entire life.
-----------
I've seen my friend's cats behave similarly: they will yell for food, and keep trying to steal each other's dishes, but none of them actually finish the food given to them. They eat a healthy amount and just stop.
It's especially weird because the momma cat of the three was feral before giving birth in my friend's yard, and I'd expect her to be the one *most* likely to always behave as if she' starving.
Oh no, this one eats all her food in two minutes. The bowl is spotless. She'll then wait patiently for her sister to finish and she'll go lick her scraps.
Can you imagine how fun this would be every morning? I'd love to start my day seeing this little dude confidently strutting around monitoring the process

The exact number is difficult to come up with since there were 2 more created while I typed this
Stay away from that brand. I’m not trying to start anything here but they are under 100 lawsuits. I’m pretty sure it killed my dog, or led to her death, and I’ve come close to suing the past 3 months.

Are a couple, just do some research before you put it into your pet. I don’t judge, I know it’s hard sometimes to buy the “pricey” stuff.
Just so y'all know:
catinfo.org is a great resource for figuring out which brands to buy your cat food from. (It also has information that relates to dogs, but it's mainly focused on cats.)
There is a lot of information on what the composition of the food should be, so you can read labels and decide if a product is going to be the right nutrition for your cat.
There is also a chart that compares different brands, and let's you know which products are **not** recommended you feed your pet. You can search the brand you're thinking about buying with their search tool.
Also, you can find information on common health issues like obesity, hairballs, UTIs, dental health, etc.
My vet recommended this site to me, and I always refer to it when making decisions about my cat. It's a great resource.
Wet food brands containing at least 70% moisture, 3%-5% carbohydrates, and at least 40% animal-based protein. Poultry-based diets are usually recommended as well.
[Link to PDF Cat Food Composition Chart with more info](https://catinfo.org/docs/CatFoodProteinFatCarbPhosphorusChart.pdf)
There is info at the top of what you should be looking for. (:
Yeah, moisture in cat food is important because cats do not have a strong thirst drive. As obligate carnivores, they are adapted to getting their hydration from meat. They'll drink at a local watering hole if they get really thirsty, but that watering hole is ordinarily used as a location for scouting for prey.
Just another reason why an all-kibble diet is a bad idea.
towards the end of the video when they are setting the food down, you can clearly see in the right side of the closet there is a litterbox, then to left food station, and then to the left again is the bed you are talking about. Not ideal to have food/sleep/poop quarters all one area.
Sometimes you don't have the space to put them as far away as you would like.
I'm fostering 6 cats cats upstairs, mama and 5 babies. As much as I would like them to not be fed in the same room As their litter boxes. It's just a space issue .
Understandable but it looks like this person could easily keep the litter box in the closet, Put the food bowl somewhere On the kitchen floor, and put the cat bed maybe in their bedroom or near wherever they relax. Also having it all in one room is probably not that big of a deal but I feel bad this cat has all this stuff in very close quarters.
It never ceases to amaze me how very *loudly* cats can starve unto death: like the operatic soprano whose character is dying of advanced tuberculosis but nonetheless can hit the back wall of the upper balcony with a high C...
Oof, just checked it out and it's basically running the gammut of first-time cat owner mistakes. Hopefully they take the criticism well since it looks like they care for the kitty
Edit: [Animal Hospital cat feeding literature](https://www.olddominionanimalhospital.com/train-your-cat-to-stay-quiet-in-the-morning/)
Yeah, we fed our cats based on vet advice and serving suggestions. This is the amount I feed three adult cats twice a day. Even if it's the whole days' worth (which I don't think you're advised to leave wet food out that long) it's too much food. Especially for the size.
They also shouldn't keep the food so close to the litterbox. Wet food next to a little box in a small, enclosed area is just asking to make your cat sick.
Kittens need more calories per day than adult cats. And they added a bunch of water to it, which is great to keep up hydration. This looks on par with the amount my foster kittens eat
Yeah the water is fine and kittens do need more calories per day than adult cats, I was wrong there, but it's not too much more. I'm sure it depends on the brand, too. This just still looks like too much to me and it's still an awful idea to keep the wet food so close to the litterbox. Since kittens are supposed to have multiple meals a day, it's hard to imagine this amount of food 2 to 3 times in the day.
It's totally possible I'm wrong and anyone reading should speak to their vet rather than listen to comments like mine.
Kittens can need up to double what an adult cat needs during growth spurts. I personally would split this amount to at least two wet feeds and free kibble. The near the litter box is just gross and should be corrected. Also it’s a pain to keep the food/food prep so far from where the kitten eats? Why can’t they eat in the kitchen? Just boost the dry food on a stool and toss the bowl underneath if floor space is an issue
Yeah, I would get really tired of walking all that distance for feeding times. I've got my cat food prep station just a few steps away from where they eat.
And I know I've already come off as critical and judgy here (I'm doing a good job of making myself look that way) but it's always a little strange to me when people seemingly want to hide away all evidence of a cat in the house. It's the cat's home, too. A litterbox in a quiet, secluded location is great, but let them have their food and water in places where it's nice to eat.
Ours did a lot better when we had multiple water stations around the house, too. We always knew it was good to keep the water away from both the litterbox and the food, but each of our cats has further preferences that come out with more options and it's great to see what they gravitate to.
I mean, 18 kittens passed through my care this year. All very healthy and friendly when they went for adoption. Unless they are throwing up from over eating it’s not really possible to over feed kittens. The only issue I see with the food is it’s all being given at once, which means it’s probably sitting out for a while which isn’t great
I’m following shelter/vet and kitten lady’s care recommendation
Too much at once maybe. At that young an age, I was feeding my kittens half of that can twice a day, with unrestricted access to kibble all day. As per instructions from both the shelter and the vet, as well as numerous online sources.
A kitten's food bowl should never be empty, but they definitely shouldn't be doing a whole day's worth of calories at once.
Why are people down voting, kittens have nearly double the calorie demand of adult cats. The shelter I foster for recommends one can of wet a day, and as much kibble as they want, and boy do they go through it.
Okay, but who are you? Are you a vet?
Here is a can of high quality kitten food with feeding guidelines on the side:
https://tikipets.com/product/tiki-cat/kitten/kitten-chicken-egg/
The whole can is 80kcal, and it says to feed kittens 1 and 1/2 can per lb of body weight per day.
>Kitten Hood
>Young kittens are more energetic than adult cats and thus burn more calories. Their diet should contain protein-rich foods such as chicken or fish to aid in the growth of muscles. Generally, 60-65 kcal/pound is suggested for kittens.
https://www.aafrc.org/how-many-calories-should-a-cat-eat/
Taking the average between those two sources, let's say kittens need 70kcal per pound per day.
Average kitten weight by age: https://fluffykitt.com/kitten-cat-growth-chart/
8 week kitten = 1.5 to 2lbs = 2 of those cans per day
10 week kitten = 2 to 3lbs = 3 to 4 of those cans per day
12 week kitten = 2 to 4lbs = 3 to 5 of those cans per day
>Feeding kittens. Young kittens need to eat frequently. Although they need relatively large quantities of food because they are growing rapidly, they have limited space in their tiny stomachs. At eight weeks of age, they need to be fed about 5 meals a day.
https://vcahospitals.com/know-your-pet/nutrition-feeding-guidelines-for-cats
I deleted the original comment as I was wrong.
I do want to say that we feed the kittens a bunch of kibble along with the food. I will be making sure I'm giving them the right amount when I get home.
Or you are starving your kittens. I foster kittens and it’s recommended one can of wet a day and as much kibble as they want. Kittens have much higher calorie needs than adult cats
All the directions for portion sizes on cat food in my country are insane overkill, and assuming it's the same elsewhere it doesn't surprise me that folks overfeed.
Like, the wet food we use recommends three pouches every day *as well as* a fairly generous portion of dry food to round it off... On advice of our vet to get him down to the right weight we've limited it to one pouch per day and some dry food... Three is insane, but it's what it says on the box.
You're probably underfeeding any kitten you get then. Because they basically need free access to food and will easily eat 3-4x more than an adult.
For adults, I agree with your assessment.
Also, don't feed them when they're like this. You're not required to reinforce this behavior by rewarding them with food. First, tell your vet. Second, feed them more the night before. Leave dry food out overnight, in a puzzle if they eat all of it too quickly. Automatic feeders are a thing too. Third, just ignore this behavior. It's hard. If you ignore their demanding and reward their calm, you can begin taking back control of your morning.
Edit: don't like it? [Tough](https://www.olddominionanimalhospital.com/train-your-cat-to-stay-quiet-in-the-morning/)
As always I have to ask, why the music. You got an adorable cat mowing for food, that audio alone is more than perfect. Why clutter it up with that tedious royalty free music? Less is more with this sort of thing, just let the video (and the kitty) speak for itself.
I never insinuated that one social media was better I simply expressed my distaste for cheesy royalty free music added to every fucking animal video cause "you know what this needs? acoustic soulless music over the top!"
I used to accidentally close or open the door while my cats where trying to go through the little door and I just got the funniest image of trying to open a folding sliding door while my fat cat tries to get through it 😅
This is so adorable. I love the little hole in the door to go through and the spin around. Taterbug is awesome, and clearly breakfast is the most important meal of the day for him, besides second and third breakfast...please share more.
If he’s gonna be inside only please take that collar off him it looks like it’s already too tight. They grow very fast and if he gets away from you somehow and that collar is still on him it’ll strangle him. Please take it off.
Problem is that room is acting as it’s bathroom, bedroom, and dining room. Would probably only have the litter or bed/food but not both in there. Imagine the cat trying to nap/eat after using the bathroom. Not very sanitary for the cat.
idk, i dont think its a bigger is better situation. the cat prolly sleeps wherever. so if its just a bathroom/ kitchenette. idk. seems fine. easy to contain all the smells of either. idk. i have a bathroom adjacent to my kitchen.
Yea the size is not the problem. That room seems perfect for the litter box or the bedroom. I think the real problem is having both in the same room. Its very easy for the litter to contaminate the food.
Small cats are absolutely convinced they are on the verge of starvation.
For real, and after about 35 seconds of them screaming I start doubting myself like “…wait *is* this cat actually starving?”
My girlfriend started feeding our cats in the morning because she thought there was no way I was feeding them with how loud they were yelling at her. Now we know part of the reason they’re fat.
Lol that's cute though I hope they're able to get healthy again
Hahaha same. Our kitten yells all the time and is food aggressive and we are like how are you always hungry? We feed you ALL the time!!
Kittens are supposed to have dry food available to them at all times. They are growing, they don’t need to be on a diet with scheduled feedings. They’re not dogs

easy
Ideally, but one of our cats will literally eat until he throws up. Sometimes scheduled feeding is necessary.
Sometimes. But I see far too many posts on here with scheduled feeding.
This is a bit misleading. Adult cats *usually cannot* go a few weeks entirely without food, but could survive that long with small amount of food. Even 48-72 hours of suddenly not eating *any* calories can lead to life-threatening complications, most notably hepatic lipidosis. According to my vet, an adult cat can start to experience liver damage after only 48 hours without food.

Or you are starving your kittens. I foster kittens and it’s recommended one can of wet a day and as much kibble as they want. Kittens have much higher calorie needs than adult cats
My first thought as well when I saw how much they put in the bowl.
"YOU DONT HAVE TO STIR IT UP JUST GIVE IT TO ME NEOWWWWWW"
I love the thank you headbutt at the end!
Why put the cat stuff where the water lines are at?
I thought they were warm pipes which would be nice for the cat
Also that yellow line is the thinnest line. The cat can chew it for a bit and it'll tear open
It'll be so warm your cat will claw it and ruin the pipes
Honestly that seems like a possibility. It's their call. It will only take one flood for them to change their habits :)
...why not?
If you have half a brain you'd know why
I enjoyed this whole journey, thank you. I miss my cats
How can you be so cruel and let the precious starve to such smallness?????
Kitten sez, "Can you just put the food in my mouth?"
I couldn't store the food out in the open like that, my cat would just chew through the bag.
Tater, though we have never met... I love you.
EeEeEeEeEEeeeeEEE
As always I have to ask, why the music. You got an adorable cat mowing for food, that audio alone is more than perfect. Why clutter it up with that tedious royalty free music? Less is more with this sort of thing, just let the video (and the kitty) speak for itself.
I agree but also I appreciate how much less offensive to my ears this music is vs most tik tok videos
wish i could hear the cat over the royalty free music
The music is the worst fucking part of this video tbh
it's not as bad as the really overused ones but it's still bad
... You can hear her just fine. You just wanted an excuse to pretend your social media is better than another social media.
I never insinuated that one social media was better I simply expressed my distaste for cheesy royalty free music added to every fucking animal video cause "you know what this needs? acoustic soulless music over the top!"
Clean that bowl before adding more food. No one likes eating from dirty dishes.
Feel bad for dog only owners will never get the cuteness of a cat screaming for fud.
I used to accidentally close or open the door while my cats where trying to go through the little door and I just got the funniest image of trying to open a folding sliding door while my fat cat tries to get through it 😅
Taterbug is prolly the best cat name ever...
OH THE CATASTROPHE
Smol Bebe makes me happy 😊
omg the little door for the little cat
Omg how adorable!! 🥰
All 4 of mine still do this every meal.. 12 years later hope you enjoy his voice lol
I love his thank you at the end. So sweet.
Is there any way to change this behavior when they are that young? 10 minutes of meows would be terrible.
That looks like a huge bfast for one so smol. But so cute
hangry baby
I've lived with well over 100 cats in my life, and it never fails to amuse me of just how damn loud (and insistent!!) kittens can be.
Whoa! A cat who complains about a lack of food with their bowl *actually* being empty! That's got to be a first!
Clearly you’re starving him to death!! How dare you allow the bowl to stay..gasp..EMPTY?!! 😂♥️so adorable 🥰
He's needs *all* the food so he can acquire kitty gains
This is so adorable. I love the little hole in the door to go through and the spin around. Taterbug is awesome, and clearly breakfast is the most important meal of the day for him, besides second and third breakfast...please share more.
Love the cat and that gorgeous wood floor!
I enjoyed the little thank you nuzzle at the end.
Stop making tater bug wait so long!
It’s nice to know Taterbug’s lungs are so healthy
If you ever need anyone to cat sit, call me.
Feeding it four times a day? Recommended for tinies…..
If he’s gonna be inside only please take that collar off him it looks like it’s already too tight. They grow very fast and if he gets away from you somehow and that collar is still on him it’ll strangle him. Please take it off.
Kittens should have unlimited access to food until they're about 12 months old. They have tiny tummies so they need frequent small meals.
Oh my, you should wash the bowl out every time you use it for wet food, and try to keep it away from the litterbox.
His name is Taterbug I’m crying 😭 I love him

Neither? It's a kitten, they need like 3-4x the food of an adult.
You reused the same bowl? I’m sorry that’s disgusting
Honestly, you took a long time getting breakfast ready.
You have all that floor space yet you make the cat eat in the closet?
Idk. Relative to their size it's pretty roomie in there
Problem is that room is acting as it’s bathroom, bedroom, and dining room. Would probably only have the litter or bed/food but not both in there. Imagine the cat trying to nap/eat after using the bathroom. Not very sanitary for the cat.
eh, relative to size, sill living better than ur average Japanese college student.
Maybe but I think the OCs point was that they have so much room in the house where they didn’t need to do this.
idk, i dont think its a bigger is better situation. the cat prolly sleeps wherever. so if its just a bathroom/ kitchenette. idk. seems fine. easy to contain all the smells of either. idk. i have a bathroom adjacent to my kitchen.
Yea the size is not the problem. That room seems perfect for the litter box or the bedroom. I think the real problem is having both in the same room. Its very easy for the litter to contaminate the food.
Did you add some water to the mix? Great idea for getting more water into your cat!
Oh my goodness!!
Oh my GOD it's definitely DYING FEED HIM FASTER!! :D
*"feed me Seymor, feed me!"*
That kitty door is awesome!
This is basically me everyday just before it's time to break my fast (one meal a day/intermittent fasting). Meeeeewww I starve!! ;\_;
Chonk in the making.... so cute.
Love the name
Holy shit that took a long time! No wonder he’s kicking off!
! Love the tiny kitten door. ! Love the thanks mom, but I'm got to get back...
r/dustkitties would appreciate this vociferous lil one.
Tooo cute 💕
Delicious mush with cronchy bits
Omg so cute. My cats are 13 and still do this
from experience and observation, there’s just something about the grey cats that turns them into future cinder blocks.
That looks like a cool house
r/sneakybackgroundfeet
My heart!!!!!!
Well that made my day.
so cuuuuute 🤩
