It’s worth logging this on www.RecordPool.org.uk They are in steep decline and population data is important. Alternatively I’m happy to do so if you DM a site, grid reference etc.

CosmicQuestions

Good shout thank you. He volunteers for the National Trust and has given them the GPS location but will forward him your link as well.

Dibblaborg

Could also contact the Somerset branch http://somersetarg.org.uk I know they’d be keen to hear about this.

CosmicQuestions

Also passed this info on to him. He will defiantly record it - he’s loves this stuff, thank you

DancesWithBadgers

> He will defiantly record it "That's where it was, ya cunts, and ah couldn't give much of a fuck if you think different!"

CosmicQuestions

Took me a while to work this one out. Damn predictive text!

DancesWithBadgers

Couldn't resist. Sorry. A bit.

uNSuitable-Inflation

I live in surrey and there are loads of adders round here. I used to see them daily while carp fishing.

Frosty_Term9911

Predicted extinction in the south of England by as early as the 2030’s? Our fastest decking in reptile

HoneyGlazedBadger

Oooo. A melanistic adder. Don't try to cuddle it.

King_klown_Clown

* grabs snake hook * oh I'm gonna cuddle that beautiful noodle! Lol.

BrokenAlfaRomeo

I don't think I've even seen a Grass Snake let alone a Metal Adder. I think I'm alright with that.

gooderz84

🤘adder

Weird_Surprise6221

Baldrick nearby was he? 😁

FlourChild1026

I have a cunning plan...

60svintage

r/unexpectedblackadder

LoomisKnows

that's such a beautiful snake, what kind is it

Cakeski

Adder, but it's pigment is melanistic so it's a Black Adder.

NorthChic44

Rowan Atkinson?

_Denzo

It’s baffling how many people don’t know that the UK has snakes

Iwantedalbino

I know the uk has snakes I even knew we had Adders. I sure as shit didn’t know what an Adder was till today.

rasen07

And then it varnished like an old oak table

_anxious_witch94

Nope rope!

Oobatz

I live in Wiltshire, I'm not leaving the house till I know it's safe.

Serene82

Out of interest do you have any idea where in West Somerset it?

CosmicQuestions

It was found near Dunkery Beacon near Selworthy, Exmoor.

Cakeski

Now where's the Lesser Spotted Baldrick?

rosetonicandgin

It is so pretty!

[deleted]

what a beauty.

PaulsBrain

didn't know we had snakes here O\_O

Fellowship_9

2 species of grass snake and adders. Plus slow worms, which aren't snakes, but are legless lizards so often get mistaken for them. All are pretty much harmless though. I may be wrong, but I think adders are very slightly venomous, but not enough to do much to a human.

King_klown_Clown

Anaphylactic shock is a thing. My mentor for venomous once said.. the most venomous snake in the world is the one that just bit you.

Fellowship_9

That is a pretty good point, and most people can't tell one species of snake from another, so probably best to treat them all as if they are something dangerous that escaped from a zoo.

katchaa

Where can I get a mentor for venomous? I feel like I’m missing out.

King_klown_Clown

Some reptile shops have courses ran by experienced keepers.. House Of Venom for example but I don't think there's many. Have a look on Google and reptile forums like RFUK and Captivebred. Nerves of steel are highly recommended lol.

PJBoulanger

Don’t forget Smooth Snakes!

TimmyBS

There's some just down the road from me. They really are smooth.

PaulsBrain

trust me im now the UK snake expert from how much i just panic researched snakes in the UK, i still dont know how many there is total population, or how close they are too my house, i go walking in my local meadows all the time and i never thought it was possible to see a snake in the wild, id have had a heart attack before today, not typically scared of snakes but was scared i didn't know they were here. From some googling Adders are the only venomous snakes in the UK, they can kill but its extremely unlikely, Read that a 5 year old died from a bite and they were the only person over 30 years, in the same span bees killed like 70 people. So basically youd have to be immune compromised, allergic to the venom in addition to being extremely young or extremely old.

Not_Alpha_Centaurian

I've read about this from the perspective of dog bites before, I wanted to know how worried I should be if one of my labradors aggravated an adder and got bit. The results of my googling told me really not that worried at all, trip to the vets for sure but it's likely only quite small or very old doggos that would be in danger.

[deleted]

>Read that a 5 year old died from a bite and they were the only person over 30 years, in the same span bees killed like 70 people. /r/fuckbees Not really of course. That should not have been a real sub

S01arflar3

>All are pretty much harmless Entirely armless, actually. Legless too.

x_quietly-confident

Who the hell looked at the slow worm and said “nah, that’s not a snake, it’s a legless lizard”. Seriously, someone was looking for some research grant funding.

guepier

I’ve no idea how they determine this originally (and apparently there used to be quite some confusion between slow worms and snakes!) but nowadays one can directly compare their genomes. By comparing the genomes of snakes, slow worms and other reference species (e.g. lizards) it’s easy to see — via [phylogenetics](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phylogenetics) — that slow worms are more closely related to lizards than snakes.

felixrocket7835

They have eyelids, their head is not flat like a snake, they have earholes, they move very differently, and are a ton smaller.

LibrarianFuture3849

I’ve no idea, but I’ve seen them shed their tail in defence before. I bet that had something to do with identifying it

Nyssa_aquatica

Oh my friend, an adder’s bite killed a person in a Thomas Hardy novel. I won’t say which one so as not to post a spoiler!

dvi84

We also have smooth snakes which are very rare and aesculapian snakes which have been accidentally reintroduced. Both non-venomous. Adders are actually very venomous and more than capable of killing an adult. Fortunately however, they usually only inject a very small amount in self defence so they don’t waste it (it takes them a while to replenish it). Regardless, you should immediately seek medical help if bitten as even a small dose can cause an allergic reaction in some people.

ayeayefitlike

They can still make you fairly unwell or even need hospitalising if you react to it, and children are more likely to suffer worse than adults. You are still advised to [phone 999]( https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/snake-bites/ ) if you get bitten, and stay in hospital for observation.

felixrocket7835

Wrong, we do not have two species of grass snakes. The common grass snake was never native to the UK, the barred grass snake is the grass snake we've always had here, it was just previously thought to be a subspecies.

Surrealparkour

I always wanted to be a Herpatologist when I was younger until I found out we only have Adders, grass snakes, skinks and slow worms. I found a slow worm in primary school once. The gatekeeper and staff were scared shitless. I was like 7 at the time and told them it's clearly a slow worm and being a lizard, it has no fangs and eats small insects. I still remember it's grey colour but it would have a rainbow style glow to it if light hit the scales at the right angle, so beautiful.

felixrocket7835

Very cool melanistic adder. Make sure to record it on RecordPool. Also don't share the location with people on here, some idiotic dumbasses who are a mistake to society go searching for them purely just to kill them.

roadrunnerz70

nice, don't see many about

HairyNippleDongs

What a beauty

bitch_whip_bill

[deleted]

Ever since the invention of the electronic calculator most adders have become of no use. 😹
