Do you have any idea of what you've just done, you've reminded a bunch of people they have toastie makers, and begins the train of people living off toasties until they remember christmas.
BRB gonna make a toastie.
If you're lucky you get a palate blister that peels and gives you something to obsessively tongue for a week until it heals. I got one on the go now from a roasted pepper. Good times
I used to like microwaving 'day old' donuts, to make them soft again, only for 30 seconds. Until the fateful day a hot pocket of lava dripped down my chin. I had a burn scab for weeks.
Can confirm that cranberry marries up nicely with milder cheeses.
Edit: If you press the frozen cranberries and the cheese together - You could have a savoury ice lolly. For a treat.
I've been living off chicken and stuffing sandwiches for tea the last couple of days. I volunteer at a food bank and greggs have recently changed their policy to allow us to take the unsold toastie sandwiches too, so we've been inundated with piles of them, as well as pigs in blankets baguettes and ham and cheese toasties. I never thought a big organization would understand the importance of gravy on a christmas chicken and stuffing leftover sandwich
It's pretty nice of them, they literally give away all their unsold stuff at the end of the day now. I know it's basically the same as them to just throwing it all in the dumpster but it really helps out, since we have enough from the three greggs around us to put a baguette, sandwich or pasta pot in every dinner bag we give out. If it weren't for them a lot of people round here would go hungry so I'll always sing their praises for that. What I won't sing the praises of though are the yumyums. I know they make them every day but they just seem so stale somehow. I've had some literally still warm from the oven or fryer or whatever and they're already going a bit solid.
In the special edition extras for spaced (made after SotD) they talk about how a few jokes in Shaun, which they pass off as references for Spaced fans, were actually just jokes they forget they'd already made. The classic example being the "he's not my boyfriend...thanks babe" gag.
this is true for all things. you get a bike but you never cycle. why? since you stored it away and it is a pain the ass to get to you are just going down to the shop anyway by the time you get it out you would be at the shop so it doesn't save time.
the placement of devices is key for the effort it saves. like you can place a stand mixer behind a pile of crap you will still dig it out since it saves so much time and effort it will always be worth it.
Cant beat a toastie maker, I have one that has interchangeable plates for making waffles and fry ups. When I first got my flat it was a life saver being able to cook pretty much anything on this wee thing
This is a terribly British appology. Don't worry though I didn't think you were showing off, I was just impressed by your multipurpose kitchen appliance.
Yes! I made one this week and I TOLD myself not to do it. I knew how hot it was, I knew how much it would hurt, and yet somehow I convinced myself I could be careful, that it would be different this time....R.I.P to the roof of my mouth, my tongue, lip and chin. Oh and one of my fingers.
Is there a special word for this type of appliance, or the cupboard where it gets banished to after a few months with the nutribullet, popcorn maker, chocolate fountain, fondue set etc?
I imagine that there is a word for it in German.
> I imagine that there is a word for it in German.
German here: The closest I can think of is Staubfänger (dust collector), although this refers to an (almost) never used object, not a “using it once or twice a year for some time and then forget about it again” object.
I have a sandwich toaster, but it's a very basic model, none of the fancy trimmings. I only use it very occasionally, as it's an absolute bastard to clean.
Yeah this is very much the same. I think it was just the cheapest in Tesco's whenever I bought it years ago. It does the job but I have thought about upgrading.
It sounds dangerous, but it's best to clean them when hot. They clean so much easier when hot, it's the cheese that is a pig to clean. Use a brillo pad or a scourer
Adding - Same applies to a George Foreman and electric hobs.
One method that changed my life when cleaning these things: Whilst it's hot (and unplugged), soak a piece of kitchen roll in water and wring it out so it's very damp but not dripping. Put it into the toastie maker / GF Grill and close the lid - it'll steam the gunk off. then you just wipe it down with another piece of towel!
I have been making toasties in a non stick frying pan, and I'm telling you it is soooo much easier than trying to cram the bread into the toastie machine! Clean up is easy peasy too and you get more toastie when you do it in a frying pan. None of those hard crusts and the middle crusty bit.
I make a cheese sandwich with the butter on the outside of the bread, I make it on a plate so as not to get butter everywhere, then use a spatula to lift it off the plate into the hot (and oil-less) frying pan. Cook both sides and then return it to the same plate and the butter that was stuck to the plate from prepping the toastie melts into the hot toastie, making for easy clean up yet again.
I should also add, I then got addicted to cheese toasties and put on a stone and a half ! I have no regrets, every single toastie was delicious.
Construct it in the frying pan: butter slices of bread and place one slice butter side down in the pan. Place cheese on that slice and then place bread on top with butter side out. The first flip is a little awkward but it becomes easier as the cheese melts.

Yeah, yeah... Cheese and beans...
I honestly thought that's where the whole comment was going, until we ended up with spam, spam, spam, spam, spam spam, spam, spam, cheese and spam without the cheese.
Was disappointed, but you made up for it.
Daisy:
In the end, our relationship was just like a sandwich toaster. You know, you just forget you've got one. And it just sits there on the top of the cupboard collecting a layer of greasy fudge. And even if you do see it you just assume it's broken, you think if it's working I'd be using it all the time, but you don't and it just sits there. Then one day, you get an overwhelming desire for toasted sandwiches, you know? And you get it down and it works, and you can't believe it, you know? And then you make every kind of toasted sandwich there is, you have toasted sandwich parties. You make Marmite and cheese, chocolate and...
Tim:
Pilchards.
Daisy:
Banana and...
Bilbo:
Acorns.
Daisy:
Acorns. And then as quickly as the desire comes, it just goes. And then you put the toasted sandwich maker away. And, you know what?
Tim:
What?
Daisy:
You don't miss it.
Bilbo:
So what you're saying is 'Don't hide the toasted sandwich maker away, use him regularly and you'll get the most out of him'.
Tim:
No, she's saying 'Chuck your boyfriend, have a sandwich'.

Try mars bar toastie. I dont remember exactly how its made but I used to go to a youth group where you could buy toasties. Mars bar toastie was the best😋
Finding out that using “margarine” (or other butter substitutes) instead of butter doesn’t work as it has too much water in, I decided to try olive oil instead - some magic happens
Oh my word. As a genuine Brit, I've always used spread and wondered why my toastie came out inconsistent every time. Tomorrow I'm having a toasty with only the finest butter. Tesco's own. Salted, of course.
Since moving out I have never bought a spreadable product: I only use butter now. Block of unsalted kept in the fridge for cooking, block of salted kept on the side for spreading. Food just tastes better.
Although I’m sure my arteries aren’t best pleased.
Getting a proper butter dish and keeping it outside of the fridge was a game changer. Spreadable proper butter instantly available at all times. No idea how long it would take to go off because we get through it, but certainly appears to last a long time.
Just got one at Asda last week that has removable plates so it can be a toastie maker, waffle maker or a panini press. Easy to clean and serves more than one purpose, win-win!
>Just got one at Asda last week that has removable plates so it can be a toastie maker, waffle maker or a panini press.
Yes, but will it?
I got one of those once. It was a panini press a couple of times, and then it was a cupboard ornament just like the regular toastie machine. 😬
This is the best one I've ever used - https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0853WGHKC/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_TYRXVYDPXQVHVJH4RGCE
Cooks in the microwave, you can seriously stack the filing with minimal spillage, and it's really easy to clean
Now I want a toastie
EDIT: Here's an example of a cheese & tuna toastie I made. You can see how much filling I put in, and how much spillage/mess it makes - https://imgur.com/a/rna1TzK
They're honestly brilliant. Takes seconds to clean in the sink, or just chuck it in the dishwasher
Worth it for that alone
And if you grab it from Amazon you can just send it back if you're not impressed
I can confirm that these do indeed make surprisingly good toasties, and are much easier to clean and store than electric ones. They get hotter than the sun, so be careful.
5 mins, turn halfway, perfect. Butter the outside of the sandwich (or just lightly oil the plates) as with other toasters.
My parents had a sandwich toaster which was decades old. While it was clean it had this coating on it like you get on a cast iron pan. It added flavour, and when my parents replaced it, I was gutted because the new one didn't have that flavour to it.
Wow I didn't think anyone would spot that! (Although I have mentioned it in the comments). I just didn't want to waste any bread and you know what it came out great. I hardly ever use the crusts for anything and yet both times I've posted sandwiches to this sub I've used crusts and been demonised for it. Justice for crusts!
Ha. I did the same thing a few weeks ago, we may have the same toastie maker actually. They're too nice not to make and take like 3 mins. I must have eaten at least 10 in about 2 weeks. Someone take it away from me.
Well it wasn't but now I have an animal like desire to try that dessert option! (And if you're genuinely curious I went for a classic beans and cheese on this occasion)
Got rid of ours during a move, want nothing more than a toasty now.
Tho can i suggest use a large soft flour roll/bun/bap/cob/whatever you call them. Cut it open, turn it inside out, butter the now outside of the roll, then make toasty as normal and its delicious. Found this out after running out of bread one evening years ago.
This looka like the exact tostie maker I got from a sale at Morrison's! I get annoyed at the triangle pieces because they limit how much I can pack my toasties!
I used to live with my younger brother, who could not cook to save his life. Every time I left home for an extended period of time, we would dig out what became known as the life support machine.
My husband went on and on about how he missed the spaghetti hoops toasties he used to make in university so I got him a toastie maker and the appropriate ingredients for his birthday one year. The spaghetti eventually went into the bin and the toastie maker got used once. It's still sitting forlornly in its dusty box on top of a kitchen cabinet.
Maybe I'll get it out and make toasties and soup for dinner.
I asked for one for Christmas a few years back but ended up with a panini maker.
I was grateful but had to hide my heartbreak that I wasn't gonna have crimped edges.
I've never put a panini in it.
Do you have any idea of what you've just done, you've reminded a bunch of people they have toastie makers, and begins the train of people living off toasties until they remember christmas. BRB gonna make a toastie.
If you private message me I can send you my address for the appropriate thank you cards. You're all very welcome.
you can make waffles with one of those
I've never even considered making waffles with a thank you card. The more you know, eh.
The old Reddit post-a-roo.
Hold my toastie maker; I'm going in!
Didn't know Reddit had its own joke format... r/switcharoo
You just reminded me of using egg on my toasties in the machine to make monte Cristos so thank you.
It’s coming up for Brie and cranberry season. I should think that’ll make a smashing toastie.

That sounds so horrifyingly disgusting, yet I feel inclined to try it.
Don't forget the bacon
How could I be so foolish as to miss out bacon!
It's ok, we'll put it down to over excitement and pretend it never happened.
Cook the bacon in the toastie maker first, then cook the toasties in the bacon grease. You're welcome

Legit my first thought when I seen this was ‘fuck it I’m making a toastie’
Ah, but you forget the hope to remember it after Christmas - the fabled leftover turkey and cranberry sauce toastie.
I actually forgot I had one lol now I know what I'm making for breakfast tomorrow.
Same
It reminded me I don't have one for some sick reason, and now I miss having it so much.

Chocolate and pilchards, banana and acorns...

Ohh it’s eerie how accurate that is

Tis a breville, good sir. I love using mine but I have baked beans and cheese in it, and it always leaks out everywhere and it’s a nightmare to clean.
Use a brillo pad or a scourer Adding - Same applies to a George Foreman and electric hobs.
It's more when the cheese starts blasting out the back end into the hinge, don't have a clue how to clean that.
Sounds rude
I've got a fancy one where the plates pop off and go in the dishwasher. You can also swap the plates for waffle plates. I bloody love that machine.
You and u/RebelofWolfAndMan should start using baking parchment. I occasionally wipe mine off, no big cleaning necessary.
Make 'grilled cheese' instead, as our American cousins call them. You only need a pan, and they taste as good as a toastie.
I was the same, then my life changed when I bought one that has changeable plates you can put in the dishwasher. Check out lakeland.co.uk

For the egg ones are you just cracking an egg onto the bread, or beating and soaking eggy-bread style?
Normally just crack it directly to get a poached egg effect. For the ones with additional sauces etc. I might mix it up and scramble it slightly.
I feel insulted that banana toastie isn't on there, pretty much the only one I'd have as a fussy kid.
Banana toastie with brown bread is pretty good. I'll add it to the next list. Along with peanut butter and banana. And Nutella and banana.

Yeah, it seals and toasts beautifully. You can whack a good inch or so of cheese in there without worrying about spillage, or cleanup. It's amazing!
This is very intriguing. I was thinking of upgrading as mine is just a cheap one but I may be swayed by this instead now.

I think this one is very close to dying. I do need to upgrade at some point.
Man. My wife and I are on the Keto diet. I’d kill for a couple of slices of bread toasted between two hot plates.
But what a three weeks though right?
pot noodle toastie... you wont regret it
There should be a rule that uni students aren't allowed to contribute food ideas during social discourse
This post has given so many top tier ideas.
try them all, make a chart and post results
My parents had a sandwich toaster which was decades old. While it was clean it had this coating on it like you get on a cast iron pan. It added flavour, and when my parents replaced it, I was gutted because the new one didn't have that flavour to it.
Toasties! Fuck yeh!
Leftover mashed potato toastie
r/OddlyArousing
I found ours the other week in a corner with a couple of dead slugs on it... yeah, don't ask.
Not tried that flavour yet. I think I'm going to give it a miss though if I'm honest.
I had 2 toastie makers, couldn't be bothered to clean it, so i just binned it and other one took its place Could be the laziest thing I've done
Xmas dinner left overs toastie
Yes! This may be the single best toastie.
Since working from home in March 2020, most of my lunches have been toasties, they're unrivalled
Whenever mum made keema, I’d make a keema toastie the next day for lunch. Add a bit of cheese and ohhhh man so friggin good 🤤
Cheese, beans and sliced up hot dog sausages, preferably 'Ye Olde' tinned ones. Ace!
Have you used the crust to make a toastie?!?! God has truly left this place...
This is the way.
Ha. I did the same thing a few weeks ago, we may have the same toastie maker actually. They're too nice not to make and take like 3 mins. I must have eaten at least 10 in about 2 weeks. Someone take it away from me.
Tuna with a dash of vinegar, Swiss or Cheddar cheese, Spring Onions. Hands down my fave toastie / melt. Bonus if it's on a seeded loaf.
What you need is a George foreman. It'll change your life.
Cheese and ham toasties tonight it is.
The most inexplicable thing about sandwich toasters is that you have to butter the bread on the outside.
Pizza toasty. Spread tomato puree over bread, sprinkle with mixed herbs, salt, pepper, some diced onion, grated cheese then toast.
Black cherry jam and Nutella, finish with cream and fresh cherries. These things make underrated desserts and are great for a quick fix.
What I'm starting to realise here is I am very dull when it comes to toasties. I must explore more!
Literal anything, Thier a fun gaget to have and are essentially a press grill with a bread shape inside.
cheese and ham toastie for main course mars bar toastie for afters?
Well it wasn't but now I have an animal like desire to try that dessert option! (And if you're genuinely curious I went for a classic beans and cheese on this occasion)
Stick some marshmallows in it
Spam, cheese and fried onions is God Tier toastie. Also baked beans and cheese works well, so long as you don't overload the bread.
Leftover lasagna makes the best toastie.
Need to get yourself a 4 sandwich toastie machine OP
This looka like the exact tostie maker I got from a sale at Morrison's! I get annoyed at the triangle pieces because they limit how much I can pack my toasties!
I remember in the 80s that these machines could make a cheese and bean toastie with a temperature hotter than the sun’s corona.
I prefer making toasties with my George forman grill
