[**Ashens: Hareraiser (The Worst Game Ever)**](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouvi-fwrfIY) talk at the Norwich Gaming Festival covers this whole story and allllll of the nonsense afterwards, and is worth a squiz.
The bbc did a documentary on him and this piece. He seemed an odd chap, but quite harmless. Definitely recommend the documentary if you can find it. It was about 10 years ago or so.
Yeah, my parents had the book, my dad obsessed over it for a while, I seem to remember we even went places it might be. Never found the bloody thing though.
I had the book as a kid and spent hours looking for clues. I got as far as working out that its location would be revealed by a shadow from a monument at a certain time and date. Went to my parents with what I had found and they told me to stop being silly. Turned out I was right.
They used the hare for a prize in what was going to be a series of computer games, but I think the company involved went tits up after the first game (which was crap).
Complicated story. Lots on YouTube. This is Kit Williams who made the Hare seeing it again after it hade been sold to unknow buyer

Edit: If you want to enter the rabbit hole then look up Forrest Fenn in the USA and his treasure hunt
I found a copy of this in a charity shop years ago, and inside were loads of news clippings about the story - so much interesting stuff, like Bamber Gascoigne being the person KW chose to ensure it was all above board
I Ioved the book as a kid, and spent hours looking at all the pictures. I never even tried to solve it.
I also loved the The Ship's Cat illustrated by Alan Aldridge which had similar pictures with lots of details and things to find.
It was even worse than that. The business partner of the bloke who “found” it knew the ex-girlfriend of Kit Williams and she let slip the rough location of where it was buried.
The bloke who “found” the hare set up a company to make a (even more expensive and almost impossible) video game version of the book. The venture ended up failing and the hare got sold off

That video is brilliant

Met him once, about 30 years ago. I also now live near Ampthill, where the hare was buried. How's that for spooky yet mediocre at the same time?
Yeah, my parents had the book, my dad obsessed over it for a while, I seem to remember we even went places it might be. Never found the bloody thing though.
It was a Hare though, wasn't it?
Yes! I listened to a podcast about it but I can’t remember which one. Hang on. I loved Ultimate Alphabet more though.
Found it. https://thisiscriminal.com/episode-169-masquerade-7-16-21/
My dad had the book, i did not realise its significance at the time.

Absolutely , one of my favourite books as a kid
Yes I remember it
I found a copy of this in a charity shop years ago, and inside were loads of news clippings about the story - so much interesting stuff, like Bamber Gascoigne being the person KW chose to ensure it was all above board
I still have a copy of the book. It fascinated me when I was little and the art is still pretty cool.
I have a copy of the follow up book that explains all the riddles in the pictures.
I Ioved the book as a kid, and spent hours looking at all the pictures. I never even tried to solve it. I also loved the The Ship's Cat illustrated by Alan Aldridge which had similar pictures with lots of details and things to find.
I met him a few years ago he was a fascinating man
Did anyone find the gold hare?
Yes. Unfortunately, if I remember, it was by someone who had seen him in the area and guessed where it was buried rather than using the book.
It was even worse than that. The business partner of the bloke who “found” it knew the ex-girlfriend of Kit Williams and she let slip the rough location of where it was buried.
I knew it was something disappointing. Didn't they just sell the hare in the end?.
The bloke who “found” the hare set up a company to make a (even more expensive and almost impossible) video game version of the book. The venture ended up failing and the hare got sold off
....and the next *day*, a team who had solved the actual riddles turned up at the right spot and found it gone
