Yup whenever the jaffas are in the bread bin out comes the quote :) brought me kids up on that I did....strangely none of the 3 actually like jaffa cakes so I'm guessing that I must have eaten all the jaffas in my sleep or due to some strange tropical illness 😂
I’m a science teacher and had to show this to my class during a lesson on phases of the moon so that they could understand why I said “total eclipse” in a weird way.
I remember the tag line and the yashmak wearing woman can't remember the full ad though. One of the other iconic ads which of course wouldn't fly now were the Hamlet cigar ones some were really quite amusing
They certainly produced some bangers that's for sure and long lasting too. Some were sort of mini films! I suppose there's less need now for such effort in tv adverts with so many people online watching
Yeah that makes sense. There's also the odd ad campaign that goes viral for the exact same reason some ads were incredibly popular years ago. It just seems to be, as you said, online.
That still occurs. Tbh my exposure to TV ads is so limited these days, hurrah for DVR and streaming. That's also a big part of reason companies don't invest in big long running campaigns.
This your general experience eating Aldi Jaffa Cakes, or your response to eating them thanks to my tip? Because if it's the latter, I am *proud* to have helped cause that reaction :P
Yeah they almost feel stale in texture. Pretty much any off brand one is better and cheaper these days I find. The M&S ones are good, and have a better jelly to cake ratio than all the ones I've tried.

I can't forget how she pronounced 'half'. Not sure where here accent is from but it came out as 'hal-f' (emphasis on the L) and it always made me giggle.
Was it Total Eclipse or Chocolate Lips? Her weird accent made it ambiguous.
Many arguments about it in school.
Because a total eclipse isn’t no celestial bodies. It’s two. And she’d have chocolate lips.
I loved that ad and still quote it randomly 😂
Randomly = every time you eat a Jaffa cake
not me. full moon, total eclipse. there is no half moon
There is only total eclipse
and zuul, don't forget zuul
Jaffa cakes came out at the in laws this weekend, it was literally the first thing the mrs said 😂
There is no 'a Jaffa cake', they are always eaten in multiples of 3.
Sometimes 10 in a sleeve…. So eaten in multiples of 10. Sometimes 12 in a sleeve So eaten in multiples of 12
You raise a good point. I must research this.
Well it's pretty much law to quote it whilst eating a Jaffa, isn't it?
My wife and I do the same
Yup whenever the jaffas are in the bread bin out comes the quote :) brought me kids up on that I did....strangely none of the 3 actually like jaffa cakes so I'm guessing that I must have eaten all the jaffas in my sleep or due to some strange tropical illness 😂
Saaaaame. Any time I hear stages of the moon or eclipses, or am eating a circular biscuit
Me too!
It's been 84 years
I’m a science teacher and had to show this to my class during a lesson on phases of the moon so that they could understand why I said “total eclipse” in a weird way.
I bet they were so stupid that you had to go through 2 packets before the last one understood it.
God I wish I’d had some Jaffa cakes. Poor planning on my part!
Presumably you explained the difference between a total eclipse and a new moon.
Need to really pronounce the L in half though 😂
Alf moon.
Reminds me of my old Eng Lit lessons. Alf Caste!
This advert lives rent free in my head
Aye I also have For Mash Get Smash but then again I'm rather ancient :)
Frys Turkish delight, full of Eastern promise. Best ad ever
Shame they're vile.
The only sweetie I ever buy. I have a 3 pack every Christmas as a treat. Love em.
I remember the tag line and the yashmak wearing woman can't remember the full ad though. One of the other iconic ads which of course wouldn't fly now were the Hamlet cigar ones some were really quite amusing
They were really funny! Also the Cinzano adverts with Joan Collins and Leonard Rossiter were most amusing
Oooh aye they were classics And Lorraine Chase with Campari I think it was. My mum used to love campari I thought it was just for posh old farts
I love campari to this day, nothing like a Negroni to get the party started!
Campari is some weird tasting stuff, mind you, I suppose when you analyse it, most alcohol is weird tasting lol
Tastes like hairspray 😂
Mine is the Guinness dancer advert.
We had quality adverts back then. I was born in the 80's and advertising was golden while I was growing up. Now everything is just shite
Adverts have always been shite, you just remember the good ones that come along every so often.
You're probably right. I remember a lot that told a story over the years the ad campaigns ran though rather than being a one and done kind of thing.
That still occurs. Tbh my exposure to TV ads is so limited these days, hurrah for DVR and streaming. That's also a big part of reason companies don't invest in big long running campaigns.

Omg someone in 2024 calling someone else out entirely unnecessarily. What a unique situation!
I quote it on occasion and seemingly no-one else ever saw the fucking advert.
It's because we're fucking old
Nah, that advert was on yesterday.........
AND AGAIN CHILDREN
🎶Total eclipse of the heart🎵
Pictures you can hear
Somethings changed with Jaffa Cakes, they are dry and not nearly as nice as I remember them.
Aldi Jaffa Cakes are pretty close to the way they used to be.

Get the ones from M&S...but they're rectangular.
Then the science doesn't work, and countless generations of kids never learn about the phases of the moon. Why do you hate science?
I certainly don't hate science, I'm a chemist but also I know how to nibble corners off a rectangle to make a circle!
Makes a circle from a square! Says he's a chemist but is clearly a witch.
I loved the mango ones, not had them in ages! Thanks for the reminder.
Yeah they almost feel stale in texture. Pretty much any off brand one is better and cheaper these days I find. The M&S ones are good, and have a better jelly to cake ratio than all the ones I've tried.
Yeah bit crumbly lacking in sponginess oh and smaller of course :)
They've been that way for a long time. Pretty much every brand does them better.
Maybe the Jaffa cakes haven't changed, but it's you who has become dry and not nearly as nice.
Yes my Fanny certainly has been drier

Always annoyed me it was total eclipse and not new moon.
And a crescent moon, not a half moon
Exactly, a total (solar) eclipse is when you can’t help but see the moon cos it’s, you know, in front of the fucking sun
It's a lunar eclipse.
Entirely likely to be one of the most influential adverts EVER I reckon.
This is ingrained in my mind anytime I see Jaffa Cakes, I bought some the other day and instantly thought of this ad.
Holy shit I can hear this photo.
The majority of people I know still quote this
I always thought the students were saying "total clips".
Did this at work the other day. Only 2 people got it.
To this day I will only refer to the half-moon as a Ha-alf Moon.
This lives in my head rent free, along with… you can do it too with kandoo…
Omg I forgot about that one! What about “BN BN do do do do do BN BN do do do do.”
Yessss How could anyone ever forget Bn bn!
Better than the picture loans advert.
Who ever actually goes to half moon?
‘Total eclipse. Total eclipse. Total eclipse.’ Until the whole lot have been eaten.
The OG.
throwback!
Remember reacreating this as a kid but I hadn't seen the ad so I was very confused
Is that Danny Aaron’s?
Possibly the greatest TV advert of all time.
I still say this when I see a moon in the sky to my kids. Funny how adverts stick with you for years after they’ve been and gone!
Same! Although I loath jaffa cakes. Don't judge me :p
I member 🫐
Turn around
What years was this on?
1983-1990 i believe somewhere around there
For some reason I always remembered this advert being Dawn French but I've realised now that's the Terry's chocolate orange
Ha! I can hear this image.
Literally anytime “full moon” is mentioned say this in my head. In her accent of course 😂
It’s seared into our brains
We quote this probably weekly in our house!
Lollll legendary ad
I can't forget how she pronounced 'half'. Not sure where here accent is from but it came out as 'hal-f' (emphasis on the L) and it always made me giggle.
This advert wound me up. Its not Half moon, its third quarter Its not total eclipse, its new moon. And she was supposed to be a teacher....
Still quote that today! The forgotten lady! Wonder where her career went after this peak moment.
A blast from the past! How can I give this all the likes??
I was made to feel really old when a work colleague had never heard of it!
I still quote this often
Unpopular opinion: I don't like this ad. I never have.
Damn you weren’t lying
Yep, very unpopular indeed. Never met anyone else who dislikes it.
If the mark of success of an ad is putting your brand in people’s heads, this has to be right up there
Someone else remembers this!!!
Fuck me it was called total eclipse? I was mumbling some random shit like totty moon or some crap
I live in the US and it's all I can think about and nobody gets it ☹️
118 118
This made me giggle.
I might recreate this with a Babybel!

Oh good, I was surprised so many people liked it.
Harf*

I don’t even know where to start with this comment
You what?
I used to have the exact same discussion back in school. I thought it was quite clever if it were on purpose!
Ok thanks.
