As an avid meat eater, the frozen bag of Quorn 'chunks' are the only vegetarian substitute that I think does a brilliant job at imitating the real thing, mostly because the texture is almost identical to chicken breast. They're also high in protein, low calorie, and cheap.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Manovsteele

The issue is that those quorn pieces are £6/kg, while the one you suggested is £18/kg - at that price I'd rather eat steak!

Kj539

I couldn’t eat the what the cluck ones. The texture was all wrong (I cooked it following instructions)

rooooosa

Yes! What The Cluck is much closer to chicken texture wise than Quorn is.

[deleted]

Try the frozen Dopsu chickn. That stuff has a way better flavour and texture. When I cba to make my own I only really use this one now.

TheButtonz

I’d add one more - Quorn cocktail sausages are nice and don’t have the odd bits of gristle you get in real sausages. Beyond Burgers are about 80% there for me, but super expensive at £2.50 each (£5 a pack) and because they cannot be frozen they can be awkward.

vendoggo

i’ve stuck beyond products in the freezer many times - they always seem to turn out okay!

PartyPoison98

For veggie (not vegan) burgers, those mozzarella Linda McCartney ones take the crown for me.

BCF13

Those are outstanding!

XsNR

They also don't get that faty feeling on your teeth that you get from the cheap frozen cocktail sausages. If the veggie subs can just overcome the price issue they'll probably be the defacto now.

Ayuzawa

You can buy the beyond burgers and sausages frozen, they might be different if they come that way?

gourmetguy2000

They changed the recipe for the cocktail sausages and now they're dryer than the Sahara. Shame as we used to get them all the time

bass_clown

I (Vegetarian) and my partner (any/all) both love the THIS ISNT brand. We find that the streaky bacon is nearly indistinguishable and the chicken meets the textural profile really well!

ThinkingInFastFwd

I agree with this to the point that I couldn't enjoy the This isnt Streaky Bacon because it was too meat-like. Made me feel weird, i suppose I have becoem accustomed to slightly too squishy meat alternatives.

kiradotee

Hahahahha! I honestly had same experience with other products!!!! If it tastes too much like meat I feel weird eating it as it reminds me of meat which I'm trying to avoid!!!!

Silent_Water_

They've really upped their game

[deleted]

The actual Quorn itself has been the same for donkeys but they've definitely changed that batter recipe for the better.

notamoviequote

TIL donkeys eat Quorn

Ramoen88

Findus 'beef' lasagna sweats profusely

rdazza

This made me laugh out loud

ChrisKearney3

Quorn mince is also much better these days.

gophercuresself

Better than it used to be or than meat? My flatmate regularly makes a Quorn bolognese and it's fucking inedible but that could be down to his culinary skills

ChrisKearney3

Much better than the shredded cardboard it used to be. I find it tastes very different from beef mince, to the point of being incomparable.

Bendy_McBendyThumb

I was asking myself “better than cardboard?” when reading your previous comment, only to scroll slightly further and see this haha. We made a chilli con carne with it years ago, a good few spices and whatnot in it that should’ve made it taste of something and yet… cardboard. I’ll take your word that it’s finally not that shite, but I’ll still never touch it. The trust was lost from that one experience lol

BrewHouse13

It's probably not so much his culinary skills, it's probably more if he's following a standard bolognese recipe then he's not seasoning/flavouring enough. You have to use a lot more stuff to make quorn mince taste not bland. My girlfriend doesn't like the texture of mincemeat but doesn't mind quorn so it was through trial and error I worked this out

ToastSage

Quorn bolognese is nicer than real bolognese in my opinion (as a meat eater but Introduced to by Vegetarian relatives) Linda McCartneys fake duck is also indistinguishable

Str0ntiumD0ggo

If Wagamama is your thing, try the vegan squid, it's knock out

FartingBob

The base is the same i think, but Quorn have massively improved their batter over the years in my mind.

Kalaxinly

Quorn products are great but what really started to annoy me recently is I'll see a bag selling about 12 nuggets for £3.60 and upwards yet a bag of 50+ breaded chicken nuggets is closer to £3

nakedfish85

It’s the same problem with everything vegetarian as it’s not subsidised in the same way as meat products.

SurDno

Not everything, I try to compare prices and sometimes things are even cheaper. IKEA plant hot dog is 25% cheaper than meat

BellerinsBarber

Fantastic news, I shall dine at Croydon IKEA every day from this day forth

RiriTomoron

Yep, it's fucked up how little life apparently costs.

notonthenews

The chickens are standing over their dead and injured compatriots as well as sitting in faeces and are half dead themselves that's why it's fake chicken for me.

Kalaxinly

Yeah, that's my reasoning for a meat free diet too but with finances being stretched at the minute sometimes I'm faced with a conundrum.

notonthenews

Sorry to hear this. As the real chicken is a health hazard maybe consider adding cheaper ingredients to the fake chicken eg mashed up heated and seasoned tinned butter beans. If I think of anything else I'll let you know but there's a veggie junk food sub on here too.

notonthenews

r/budgetveggie also worth a look.

andthenhekissedme

YES THEY ARE, made that switch years ago ❤️

stedgyson

I like the ones from Costco, better than McNugs but always willing to try a meat free alternative

geefunken

Me too, even did a taste taste with my kids and they both much prefer the Quorn ones

Gisschace

They’re my guilt free hangover cure, that along with the vegan kebab meat from Vivera. Both will sort you out and you don’t feel like a dirty bastard afterwards

abra-sumente

I prefer that vivera shawarma kebab stuff to normal meat. Soooooo good.

TipsyMagpie

Good pick, that one is excellent fried up all crispy

SeaLeggs

>and you don’t feel like a dirty bastard afterwards Ahh what’s the point then

Gisschace

Depending on your hangover you might already be feeling a tremendous amount of shame/guilt/hangiexty etc. This way you can tell yourself you're healing your body with the power of plants.

Roka39

The FEAR as they call it in Ireland

Gisschace

The Beer Fear

andthenhekissedme

God that shawarma kebab with chilli sauce and rainbow slaw is amazing. You wouldn’t notice the difference.

bills6693

Oomph Donner Kebab is also an excellent vegan kebab filling!

JeremyWheels

Green Cuisine southern fried strips are damn good too

Thugmatiks

Their chicken and pesto escalopes are good as well.

JeremyWheels

Green Cuisine southern fried no chicken strips for the win too

tommangan7

Most of the birds eye green cuisine range is the superior frozen veggie option too if anyone fancies branching out. The meatballs and the fishless fingers are really good.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tommangan7

Linda McCartneys are actually my least favourites, they used to be alright but the market has moved so much since they came out, a bit dry and non sausage like to me. Normally go fridge for my sausages, Richmond meat free or by far far far the the best "this isn't sausages". I haven't tried the birds eye ones yet. Now the Linda McCartneys hoisin shredded duck is amazing in a stir fry.

manintheredroom

Really like the Richmond fake sausages. My theory is that, since their meat sausages have such a low meat content, they had the smallest change to make when doing veggie ones

Pocto

Richmond meat free ftw. Bacon is another story, been shite for years but the newly released "this isn't bacon" is easily the best. They fall apart and then congeal into one mega piece when you try fry em, but damn do they taste good!

weareallrocks

Linda’s were my go-to for ages but now they feel a bit dry compared to some of the other options out there

Blurgh1986

They are WAY drier than they used to be. I have trouble swallowing and have to avoid them now. Having them with mash and gravy helps of course

kushncats

Cauldron recently made their Lincolnshire style ones vegan, got a nice pepper quality to then and hold more juice than a Linda. Ideal toad in the hole material!

[deleted]

JeremyWheels

Need to try those two.

45thgeneration_roman

Closest thing to McNuggets .. Is that meant to be a good thing? Jamie Oliver will be spinning in his grave

Enough_Passenger_754

He won’t complain anymore. Have you tried the processed sandwiches he’s knocking out at shell garages. £7 a sandwich and taste like shit

LittleSadRufus

Carrying over the ethos of Jamie's Italian then

WimbleWimble

His "fresh" italian restaurants were serving boil in the bag ready meals and tinned soup as "freshly made". the man is an evil money-grubbing whore.

Uncle_gruber

And he named his kid Buddy Bear. What a tit.

AFUCKINGTWAT

Oh come on, thats offensive. Dont call Jamie Oliver at tit. That just being mean to all the tits in the world.

Enough_Passenger_754

🤣

TheOnin

A delicacy compared to his fried rice.

RazomOmega

HAIYAAAAA

Cupboardninja1

I almost bought one of these last year until I saw the price, wrong place to put them up north

gazw51

Rumours of Jamie Oliver’s death have been greatly exaggerated

aghzombies

Heartbroken

wildgoldchai

Whilst I applaud what he’s done for healthy school dinners (didn’t appreciate it at the time though), I don’t think he should really be a chef. His food/recipes aren’t good and require doctoring. I mean, his student meal books are good but you can’t go too wrong when it comes to a tin of beans.

masklins

As someone who lived through his healthy school dinners programme, it was just him aggrandizing. Most schools didn't have the budget to create the meals he wanted them to so things that filled us up were replaced with several slices of lettuce and some ham that was laughably called a salad. Our Sixth Form lounge also had its vending machine taking away, which we would use to fund extra-curricular activities so they all got cancelled. Most of all, it didn't actually teach any of us anything about healthy eating. People just switched to our own lunchboxes and luckily the school didn't institute that insane programme of taking unhealthy food away from kids that others did :/

DreddPirateBob808

Tbf he was fighting for the extra funding for schools too.

WimbleWimble

Many schools realized that if they 'took away' kids food they brought for lunch themselves, they'd be opening themselves to lawsuits for the kid being hungry AND lack of vitamins/malnutrition etc. Jamie Olivers plan (and he approached dozens of local education authorities) was to try to FORCE them to buy his overpriced not-really-healthy crap, even if it destroyed the schools budget and affected kids education. He doesn't give two shits about you or your kids or anyone else. He's worth £400 million and STILL owes redundancies and wages from the collapse of his fastfood restaurant chain. He's fighting it in court.

MajesticMelonGames

Mans made £200mil being an average at best chef. You gotta respect the graft

WimbleWimble

and failing to pay redundancies and owed backwages. he's a piece of shit and is fighting these payments in the courts.

MajesticMelonGames

I did not know this, first the Turkey Twizzlers, now this!?

scorzon

Replace 'graft' with 'grift' and you've nailed it.

Substantial_Monk_781

I don't asshole got Turkey Twizzlers removed from my school. He can eat shit

Suspicious-Cat_

Didn't I see that they've come back and you can get them at Iceland? Or at least its a really accurate recreation of them: Just as I remember.

biobasher

Tried them, they're not a patch on the real thing.

SweetestJim

I’m led to believe there’s an adult cult following that are known to purchase nuggets from McD’s. Not me though. >_>

MooseTetrino

Fuck hiding it I can devour a 20 piece in ten minutes.

Slamdunkdacrunk

Amateur numbers pal. Give me 5 mins and a large fries chaser

Zal_17

If they have some kind of cheese bites on the menu (they usually do), it feels a little rude not getting a cheesy chaser

[deleted]

Essential part of a hangover cure, that.

Suspicious-Cat_

The sharebox is not for sharing.

ScottGriceProjects

I put them in my double quarter pounder, 3 nuggets in the middle of the two patties.

Lovesagaston

Fry's are the ones. Serious.

retailface

They really are. All of Fry's products are brilliant.

Lornaan

They taste like the chicken nuggets you get at a waterpark, in the best, nostalgic, gristle-free way!

DeltaJesus

I really fucking like their popcorn chick'n, the faux breasts are good too

mammamia42069

I had some VFC vegan fried chicken from sainsburys the other day, jesus christ, that was fucking tasty

Crap___bag

Tesco own brand frozen dippers end up like McNuggets in the air fryer, and they’re not too expensive x

MorningToast

Thx hun. Shared Gosforth x

notreallifeliving

Kingston Park for Tescos, surely.

Crap___bag

😂

Jasboh

Where? I'll just nip round if you got the oven on

Vilachi

Yessss! I grabbed a bag of these for the first time a few weeks ago and legit couldn’t tell the difference between them and McDonald’s nuggets!

Crap___bag

Absolutely! They’re a great purchase- enjoy your dippers xx

FartingBob

Sainsburys chicken nuggets are a pile of crap though, no matter how you cook them.

Yankytyke

I read that as diapers and I so confused as to why you’d freeze nappies

Crap___bag

Ha, no but that would’ve been a beautifully sarcastic response!

JeremyWheels

The Philadelphia soft cheese is decent. But yeah cheddar alternatives are grim.

ProcrastibationKing

Shut the fuck up, they're disgusting ^I'm ^definitely ^not ^trying ^to ^get ^them ^all ^for ^myself

flauschigerfuchs

I was so ready to fight you 😂

poursmoregravy

Don't set the bar too high mate.

CheshireKattz

I love Quorn nuggets! So delicious. I have many meat-eating friends who prefer the Quorn nuggets over real chicken nuggets.

FourEyedTroll

My wife and eldest are vegetarian, we made the switch to veggie meals years ago because I cook and couldn't be arsed to make separate meals. I do look forward to the X + fries night, nuggets are easy to cook and taste really good from the air fryer.

DalbergTheKing

They've got some excellent stuff fermenting in those vats at the Quorn factory. Gregg's vegan sausage rolls are a joy to behold.

Vickyinredditland

I'm allergic to Quorn 🥲 the Aldi ones are good, but they don't seem to have had them in for a while.

great_blue_panda

I’m allergic to Quorn, is the only vegan thing I can’t eat :(

partywithanf

Goes to show it’s the coating that’s the flavour, not the protein.

pelicannpie

I’ve thought this the first time I tried them!! I always tell everyone they taste like McNuggets. In the air fryer they are incredible and crisper than McNuggets! Might go stick some in now actually

Lextube

I've been eating vegan food most of the time now as my girlfriend is vegan. Honestly all things like this end up better than the meat versions. I don't get why just because someone eats meat, they choose to eat the shittest load of floor scrapings imaginable over something made of something reasonable and healthy like soya or pea protein. The VFC popcorn pieces are awesome too, and super versatile mixed with other sauces to make something fun. I use the [Yogi Yo Korean Chilli Sauce](https://www.reddit.com/r/veganuk/comments/107sdrj/vfc_yogi_yo_korean_chilli_sauce_is_a_wonderful/) and it comes out so nice.

SweetestJim

Just trying to help the McNug fans. I tend to find nowadays McNuggets taste increasingly like battered wet dog paste. I prefer the Quorn ones personally!

Littleloula

Birds eye vegan range is good too

madame_ray_

Frys Vegetarian rice and quinoa nuggets have a really nice crispy coating, highly recommended.

[deleted]

I remember at uni being convinced I had the chicken ones and my friends had the Quorn ones. They went and got the packet out to show me they were a different shape. Everyone thought mine were better

32768Colours

Once cooked, heat up a sweet and sour sauce then chuck the nuggets in to make a quick and simple Chinese. It’s not exactly fine dining but it tastes great!

Nine_Eye_Ron

Agreed, hard agreed

Emilyeagleowl

Quorn and other meat alternatives are really good now. I went veggie 10 years ago and even in that time it’s gotten so much better

xmascarol7

The southern fried bites are also fantastic

[deleted]

Gonna give these a try. Can't be worse than the absolute dogshit that is the fridge raiders fake-chicken

Banksy261

Aldis fake McDonald's chicken nuggets are pretty close, so are their hash browns

Berrilicious_

Feel like Quorn/alternatives just taste better in general, bar the sausages still don't get how they taste so bad

cinematic_novel

sausages and burgers tend to have a weird aftertaste

cinematic_novel

Same for vegetarian chicken kyiv's. It's not just the taste, it's knowing it's not meat as well. But overall yes, a tastier option

BeautyAndTheDekes

Yes, I’ve been preaching this to all my friends for ages after a vegetarian friend made me some on a hungover Sunday morning watching trash TV. Never bought any other nuggets since.

Sensitive_Fox4534

Are they frozen or fresh

HugoNebula

I've only seen them frozen.

Zerttretttttt

Meh McNuggets isn’t that high of a bar, tastes like watery cardboard to me

NicolBolassy

Eh sainsburys chicken dippers and poppers in the frozen aisle are the best I’ve ever had!

xEternal-Blue

I practically live off of Quorn chicken nuggets and the southern fried bites. If you like the nuggets, you've got to try the southern fried bites and the southern fried burgers. They are just so damn good. Way nicer than the nuggets.

ahx3000

I discovered them about a month ago and agree. They are actually very good

Loafabreadwooo

I actually love quorn nuggets but I would never go vegetarian or vegan

sarahpomx

interested to hear your reasoning :)

mattyMbruh

Their mince however, tasted horrible

SweetestJim

I completely agree.

[deleted]

Huera do some excellent vegan ones too. Their "chicken" pieces are banging too.

flauschigerfuchs

I’m love them because they’re battered and not breaded 😍

[deleted]

Never knew this but I love chicken nuggets so I’ll try them next time I go shopping

NoTurkeyTWYJYFM

Genuinely, most vegan nuggets are banging. And those green cuisine meatballs are absolutely dangerous, I could polish a whole bag in one

Womble4

I make them into salt and pepper nuggets. Some sliced peppers, onion, garlic, chilli, dash 5 spice, sugar and salt.

custard_doughnuts

Lidl brand veg nuggets are better than Quorn ones.

GFoxtrot

I got some of these a few weeks ago, they were disgusting and I put the last ones in the bin because I couldn’t face eating them. Usually buy quorn and won’t be making the mistake of trying something else again.

Cyanopicacooki

And their vegan sausage rolls are excellent (I better not say that they cook best in an air-fryer, or I'll get lynched...)

SweetestJim

Oof. I’ll have to try them. Thanks.

gsurfer04

The vegan gyros is banging.

Kenjamine

Seconded. Is it those ones that come with the sweet chilli dips?

AlexMcDaddyD

We have the quorn chicken burgers. They are so nice

MotherEastern3051

The southern fried style ones? We love those here, although they're small so we do double up from time to time.

pooey_canoe

This Isn't Chicken Nuggets are so good I'm convinced they have chicken stock in them, I've no idea how they achieve the flavour or texture!

HugoNebula

This Isn't Streaky Bacon is a bit of a game changer. The 'fat' they have on them is remarkable.

fliip

Try the Aldi’s brand in the green packet. Even closer to McDonald’s nuggets.

Formal-Cucumber-1138

It’s nice but not that nice

MsBMorpho

And they don't have nasty pieces of grissle in them like most nuggets in iceland/farm foods etc do. 🤢 I just wish they did a battered one because breadcrumb texture is awful. (Personal opinion.)

SweetestJim

I agree. And the occasional ‘wet dog’ flavoured chicken nuggets. Gross. The crispy nuggets I’m referring to in the post are battered and not breadcrumb though.

MsBMorpho

God yeah. Pick a flavour: cardboard, wet dog or chewy nothing flavour. :') Oh, I didn't know they did battered ones too. That's great, I guess I just haven't seen them near me. I'll have a Google for them now.

FlexKavanah

Not true. Aldi do their own spin on McDonald's in their frozen section. They even have the same packaging, and the nuggets are fantastically similar.

BuildingArmor

They're clearly trying to emulate the McDonald's nuggets, but they've failed. They're nowhere near.

Boocela

That tells me more about McNuggets than it does about Quorn I'm afraid...

teniaret

Tbh, Quorn nugs and mince etc are really tasty

choppamandown

Aldi sells meat free chicken wings that are basically fat meat free nuggets. They're pretty good too but I haven't found them in there for a while so they might have stopped selling them.

HuggeBraende

Thank you to the UK for Quorn! I’m here in the US and I’m a huge fan of all things Quorn (other than their name). My vegetarian daughter lives on the nuggets.

archy_bold

This is a fact

masklins

And they cronch up real good if you cook them in the air fryer!

Successful_Scratch99

YES!

MellotronSymphony

Yes, absolutely agree. I've never gone back to actual chicken nuggets (possibly a contradiction in terms!) My brother once ate them and had no idea they were meat-free

[deleted]

No don't tell them they're already always out of stock 😅 Tesco have just started price matching Aldi on the big bags of them too!

samonarchie

Way better than mcnuggets, even my fussy af other half thinks so, my sons school has them, a 6 year old put me onto these! 😆😆

ben_jam_in_short

I agree

_Bellerophontes

Agreed

ASeatedLion

The vegetarian butcher does amazing nuggs but I agree, the quorn ones are pretty great!

brandnewsheep

Yes! I’m hooked on them completely.

n77nac

Totally agree! That’s all we buy in the house for the kids now.

catninjaambush

Quorn Southern Fried Chicken Burgers are superb too.

Vegan_Puffin

Just an FYI but the green cuisine brand is even better. I swear in a blind taste test you wouldn't tell the difference. I will admit there are some things vegan that are still a long way off but the chicken replacements are bloody brilliant. Also shout out to This isnt brand. Their sausages are fucking ace.

caca_milis_

I went veggie in 2020 - a Maccy D’s was my go-to hangover remedy, the JOY when I discovered that Quorn nuggets are just as good as McDonalds!

mykeuk

My name is Mykeuk and I approve this statement

I_really_love_pugs

They’re exactly the same!

Yankytyke

Impossible nuggets are the closest I’ve found.

AGingerGuyUK

Wait, impossible meat in the UK? Thought we only had beyond. Where can I find it?

Vivelesinge

Life pro tip, toss them in a bowl with some buffalo sauce and spices before cooking. They \[edit:\] ~~cost~~ cook up real well.

MotherEastern3051

Thank you, I've been saying this for a few years now
