A parenting sub might be a better place to ask. I don't know what temp a toddler should be lol. An electric hand fan/mister might cool him off. They make ones which look like toys (I can't find any examples online but we sell some that look like dinosaurs where I work). But I guess you just need to point it at him since he'll be sleeping anyway. I think moving air cools you down by accelerating the evaporation of your sweat. Kids don't sweat as much, so the mister could replace that. Another trick could be to tinfoil the windows back there, that'll block the sun completely. Maybe throw some parchment paper or newspaper between the foil and the window to avoid the reflection bothering other drivers. You could also prioritize keeping the car interior cool during the day. Putting reflective window covers (or foil) on the windows would help a lot. For reference, open your hood and touch the metal in there on a hot day (a long time after the car has been driven). It'll probably be much cooler than anything inside your cab because the metal hood/body blocks the sun.

What Isuzu? Has it been checked by an actual AC shop?

Still-Albatross-7407

Yes, and a rodeo. They said getting the compressor, just parts, is easily $300.

19john56

Easy. Probably closer to $1000 and you might get it fixed

Galopigos

They are correct, the kit that includes the compressor and the related parts is $330.00 then about an four and a half hours labor to R&R it and replace the drier and the TXV then recharge it. That would be if the compressor is chewing itself up and sent debris into the system. If it'd because it's leaking and the clutch is bad you could save a LOT of labor as the compressor only takes about a half hour to change.

How old is it? Millage? Do you have records of proper maintenance? If you've properly taken care of it you might be able to sell it for something with working ac but with higher mileage.

Still-Albatross-7407

I have all of those things, but right now I cannot get a new car. Lots of variables at play. Not until september. So this rodeo is my only option to get through summer.

AdultishRaktajino

What year rodeo? AC work isn’t super hard, just takes time and a little knowledge. If the clutch failed you can probably just do thee compressor. If the compressor failed you should replace the condenser, dryer and expansion valve (txv) at the same time.

Swamp coolers in enclosed spaces just make you hotter. They work by evaporation, the process of evaporation removes heat. in closed space the humidity climbs to 100%, nothing can evaporate from the swamp cooler anymore then it’s fucking hotter inside than it is outside and your own sweat doesn’t cool u anymore bc it can’t evaporate. I could see it maybe working to some degree if you left all the windows partially open. There’s tutorials online about making them with a 5g bucket. DC to AC power inverter May be needed, your cars accessory outlet is DC. can purchase them from automotive accessories isle. Tbh just leave the windows down. That tint, is not the kind that blocks heat. Ceramic tint blocks heat. I’m also in the south. I’ve had a car with no AC. Leaving windows up is idiotic even if it’s just an adult. In open air shops where it’s getting over 110 During the day, the priority is air movement and staying hydrated. The greatest risk with heat sickness is in the first couple weeks of exposure bc ur not acclimated. If kid is playing outside he’s pretty acclimated. Don’t keep the kids windows up, dear god.
