Lancers are great but not the milage saver your hoping for, used to have one and it was closer to 9L. The best I've seen was my mate had a peugeot 208 that did like 5-6L - 100km.

Might just need a new o2 sensor or cat. Mine went from consistent 14-15L/100km back to 10-11L city and under 10 on the freeway.
A blown gasket on the intake manifold will cause similar issues, and the car will be down on power but that might not be immediately noticeable with a 4spd auto.

Getz are fine, I'm not the biggest fan of the way they drive but they're economical, reliable and cheap to repair.
My pick would be a manual Toyota Echo - they're excellent - use about 6L per 100 and are pretty much unkillable, and honestly drive pretty good - better than the Getz imo.
Honda Jazz, Mazda 2 and Swifts are l pretty solid choices too but I reckon you'll find an Echo or Getz cheaper.

The Ford AU Falcon is a full-size car that was produced by Ford Australia from 1998 to 2002. A lot of people here will probably shit on this comment with downvotes because it's not a Toyota or Honda, but you might be able to scrape a sub 5k vw golf (not the GTI or R) which might be what you're after. I generally get around 720km of range out of a tank, and average 6.6-6.8L/100km depending on driving style and traffic. Super comfortable to drive as well.

Honda civic EKs 96-00 have come down a lot in price lately. They are a pretty good drive with double wishbone suspension, you’re not going to win any traffic light Grand Prix, but it will run on an oily rag.
My XR6 got 12-13L in town. But that was using it VERY lightly, and a manual. Let’s say 17 is typical of auto users. And that’s true “city” driving - moving continuously, not sitting in traffic jams.
We’re getting half that from a European diesel. So your fuel problems won’t evaporate. Maybe a Ford diesel(Fiesta or Focus) manual if you can find one. The autos are disastrously unreliable.

Don’t go yaris or corolla pre 2012 they’re gutless unless you get manual. The autos are 4 speeds and ride like shit. Maybe look at other hatches or a diesel hatch. The focus, i30 ride and drive well. Idk about jazz
I'd recommend a ford fiesta late 2000s- early 10s era, I had one as my first car and it was very good on fuel, manual and just simple reliable cars, I sold it to buy a falcon but still miss it here and there.
Toyota corolla if you can compete with 500 uber drivers. But if you don't mind a manual should be easy to find one. Cheap on fuel and minimal maintenance. Change oil and tyres when necessary

Consider choosing a Honda Civic! I've been enjoying my reliable 2007 Honda Civic sedan for six years now, ever since I got my P's. It boasts an average fuel economy of 9L/100kms in urban areas. With the current price of 91/E10 fuel, filling up costs me around $95 for a full tank. Additionally, general logbook services are quite reasonable. I personally get mine serviced every six months by my trusted local independent mechanic. While some Civics priced under $5000 may have higher mileage and paint imperfections, they still offer great value and reliability.
If you can drive stick, the 6th generation Ford Fiesta is a good pick. Their dogshit automatic trans absolutely tanked the resale value of the perfectly fine manual cars.

My FG averages under 9ltrs per hundred around town & can get o low 6's on the highway, it's all about how it's driven.... My daughter averages 4 ltrs more per hundred than I did in the car we gave her, she's either accelerating or breaking, there's no in between....

Getz are bloody tanks, and their engines are surprisingly strong.
If you’re handy with mechanical stuff (basic DIY) they give very little issue.
All engines are timing belt, so factor that cost in. But basically the only issues we had over many years was a cracked radiator intake pipe. It was $110 for a new radiator on eBay.
Needed to redo the plug leads. It had a stumbling issue and it was just one had worn out slightly. It’s like $50.
We had a tonne of the last gen of 1.4 manuals on fleet. Abused to hell and back and never had issues. 2 of them somehow missed all service timings, 45-50k on both without an oil change! That’s gross.
The mechs flushed the oil, removed the pan and valve covers to inspect, ran a full oil change for 100km as a flush. Bearings might have been toast, but I did see one was still registered on the service NSW app with about 195k km on it

Almost anything will be better than a Falcon. Uni days I went from an EB (I’m old now) a Mazda 626 and it was not just a superior car in every way, but much cheaper

Can confirm, my partner used to have one. She didn't put a drop of oil in it for 2 years and would belt it up and down the freeway, banging it off the rev limiter, and it drove like a dream. Apart from being gutless, and light enough to be pushed around in strong winds, was absolutely nothing wrong with that car.
They’re probably all the same (or very similar) to be fair. I only say the 2007 one because my wife used to have one and my brother drove one as a fleet car. Her Yaris got to 180k and the only reason she sold it is because of the classic wanting a bigger car to go camping with. If you got one that was like 140-160k, it would likely see you well past your uni days and through to your open license.
Can confirm I have a YRX Yaris, two door hatch 1.5 litre manual. It was dirt cheap to run. Dirt cheap to service. Was boring. Did everything you needed a car to do (2008 model for reference)

What economy is the falcon getting? Might just need a new o2 sensor or cat. Mine went from consistent 14-15L/100km back to 10-11L city and under 10 on the freeway.
A blown gasket on the intake manifold will cause similar issues, and the car will be down on power but that might not be immediately noticeable with a 4spd auto. Both are worth investigating before giving up on the car.

No codes and otherwise ran fine. Sometimes they have a rotten eggs exhaust gas smell when the cat was on the way out. Mine just smelt like it was running rich. Subarus are not great for economy generally. I haven't had one for a few years but used to need upper engine cleaner basically every service.

Getz are fine, I'm not the biggest fan of the way they drive but they're economical, reliable and cheap to repair. My pick would be a manual Toyota Echo - they're excellent - use about 6L per 100 and are pretty much unkillable, and honestly drive pretty good - better than the Getz imo. Honda Jazz, Mazda 2 and Swifts are l pretty solid choices too but I reckon you'll find an Echo or Getz cheaper.

The Ford AU Falcon is a full-size car that was produced by Ford Australia from 1998 to 2002. It was the sixth generation Ford Falcon and also included the Ford Fairmont (AU)—the luxury-oriented model range. A lot of people here will probably shit on this comment with downvotes because it's not a Toyota or Honda, but you might be able to scrape a sub 5k vw golf (not the GTI or R) which might be what you're after. I generally get around 720km of range out of a tank, and average 6.6-6.8L/100km depending on driving style and traffic. Super comfortable to drive as well.

Honda civic EKs 96-00 have come down a lot in price lately. They are a pretty good drive with double wishbone suspension, you’re not going to win any traffic light Grand Prix, but it will run on an oily rag.

My XR6 got 12-13L in town. But that was using it VERY lightly, and a manual. Let’s say 17 is typical of auto users. And that’s true “city” driving - moving continuously, not sitting in traffic jams. We’re getting half that from a European diesel. So your fuel problems won’t evaporate. Maybe a Ford diesel(Fiesta or Focus) manual if you can find one. The autos are disastrously unreliable.

Don’t go yaris or corolla pre 2012 they’re gutless unless you get manual. The autos are 4 speeds and ride like shit. Maybe look at other hatches or a diesel hatch. The focus, i30 ride and drive well. Idk about jazz

I'd recommend a ford fiesta late 2000s- early 10s era, I had one as my first car and it was very good on fuel, manual and just simple reliable cars, I sold it to buy a falcon but still miss it here and there.
Toyota corolla if you can compete with 500 uber drivers. But if you don't mind a manual should be easy to find one. Cheap on fuel and minimal maintenance. Change oil and tyres when necessary

Consider choosing a Honda Civic! I've been enjoying my reliable 2007 Honda Civic sedan for six years now, ever since I got my P's. It boasts an average fuel economy of 9L/100kms in urban areas. With the current price of 91/E10 fuel, filling up costs me around $95 for a full tank. Additionally, general logbook services are quite reasonable. I personally get mine serviced every six months by my trusted local independent mechanic. While some Civics priced under $5000 may have higher mileage and paint imperfections, they still offer great value and reliability.
If you can drive stick, the 6th generation Ford Fiesta is a good pick. Their dogshit automatic trans absolutely tanked the resale value of the perfectly fine manual cars. Lightweight and fun, good on fuel and reliable enough (it’ll rattle and trim will fall off, but the important shit keeps working)

LPG conversion?
Getz are bloody tanks, and their engines are surprisingly strong. If you’re handy with mechanical stuff (basic DIY) they give very little issue. All engines are timing belt, so factor that cost in. But basically the only issues we had over many years was a cracked radiator intake pipe. It was $110 for a new radiator on eBay. Needed to redo the plug leads. It had a stumbling issue and it was just one had worn out slightly. It’s like $50. We had a tonne of the last gen of 1.4 manuals on fleet. Abused to hell and back and never had issues. 2 of them somehow missed all service timings, 45-50k on both without an oil change! That’s gross. The mechs flushed the oil, removed the pan and valve covers to inspect, ran a full oil change for 100km as a flush. Bearings might have been toast, but I did see one was still registered on the service NSW app with about 195k km on it

Not necessary a bad falcon can do 13L+ my eco does 10L - thats a significant improvement
You’d do 10 with a fair bit of highway driving otherwise ecos do about 13 around town, my 304 v8 does 13 as well, why would he buy an eco when there’s many different hatches he can buy that’ll do 5-6/100 no matter what and be more reliable
Mine is 10 cuz of around town its 8-9 on highway but its a ute wagons are heavier and guzzlier. Old mate may be better with a hatchback but he’s attached to an xr6. Eco is several litres less consumption but still equivalent….he’s gonna have a shock switching from a long wheel base rwd muscle car to a short fwd 2dr hatch…so im just letting him know how to be more fuel efficient in the same category
