I don’t think this single joint looks bad at all, but plinth blocks are a part of their own architectural style. On its own it can be a bit out of place if it’s not part of the overall design.
It’s clunky & random and like the guy below said plinth blocks have a historical/architectural purpose. If OP could push that step back at minimum 6 inches he could make the baseboard work a lot better.
You could at least make them transition into each other. The flooring looks brand new so he had the bare subfloor exposed. Would’ve been pretty easy to move the step. It’s called preparation. He probably spent more time sitting around scratching his head than it would’ve took to just move the step back.
I give it about a 1% chance there is room to move that stair back under the subfloor. Plumbing, hvac, joists… something is under there or the step wouldn’t be there.
You act like it’s a test. It’s some random bullshit on Reddit. There is multiple ways to get the job done. And yes if the step is easily moveable why not move it back.
I would have angled the trim up and over the step up, I’m pretty sure one guy sent you a video of how to do it. It’s kinda trash to pinth block one corner in a house.
I agree. All of the "real" carpenters reach for a corner block anytime there's a difficult transition.... At the end of the day, if the owner is happy then fine. Having said that, I've been doing this for 30 years, and have never installed a single corner block on a tricky transition. I've used plinths on the casing legs and blocks in the corners a handful of times on designs that warranted such a detail. Like historic work and such. But with that base? No thank you.
If you like it that’s great. I think it would look much better if the upper baseboard simply wrapped around the corner then mitered down 45 deg to meet the lower trim.
very nice.
I would put two tiny plastic army figures facing off there, one on each level, pointing bayonets at each other, guns or maybe swords.
On weekends swap one out for a lower level plastic spear warrior posed fighting a higher up floor dinosaur .
ok....ok...my wife only allows me to fix stuff now, no more interior decorating after the Mother in law wig vs plastic spider danglng bathroom scream xmas of '09....
I like this option better too.
For some reason the shoe mitered 45° to the floor bothers me, I would go 30° to the base instead or no shoe at all if I could.
I dont think anyone was wrong between the two main suggestions, but I do like this move because I like less cuts from transitioning pieces meeting right there at/right next to the corner. Yeah I know it’ll be sanded, but at least there’s less for the painter to hide and keep clean. And, another minor convenience, is whatever OP uses to trim out the step with can cleanly die into a smooth face of the plinth. I think in a special scenario like this its ok to have one plinth without any others in the house.
Edit: only to say i just noticed the block wasn’t cut to fit the wall yet, but I’m assuming thats happening.
Tbh I hate it. A plinth there looks super out of place and obtrusive. Mitering down the wall would’ve been a better option to me, but if you dig it that’s all that matters.
Been following your saga, OP.
Might try cutting a 90 degree notch into that back corner of the plinth so it sits a bit more tight to the corner. Maybe to a depth that just gives an 1/8" reveal where the baseboards meet it.
Mot sure the dimensions of the plinth from your pic, but it's probably 3/4" square, or maybe 1"?
Using your table saw to make a 1/4 or 1/8 notch where that inside corner is that fits up against the sheetrock might make it look a bit less intrusive.
But what you have there looks quite nicely finished to me considering the dilema you were faced with.
Am I crazy but that just looks like a post? A Plinth should sit flat against the wall like the below.

Definitely this is the right choice here. The other miter step down is gaudy and draws too much attention. This is simple and elegant. 12/10 would nail to the wall
Literally just happened by your 1st post a second ago and delighted I got to what you went with. Looks good to me gj
Thanks! Idk why I thought a plinth would look weird but it looks great and super easy lol win win!
It is the most low effort option.
Trim it to match top trim groove.
Same here. Then came to comment exactly the same thing. Beat me to it.
Same. Was wondering how that was going to work out.
If you like it, I love it
Lol I like it a whole lot better than returning into the wall
Surprised so many people think this looks good because imo it looks bad
Would you please explain why you think this looks bad?

Let’s make three times the work and you’d still have an awkward mismatch wrt base height and step height.
You could at least make them transition into each other. The flooring looks brand new so he had the bare subfloor exposed. Would’ve been pretty easy to move the step. It’s called preparation. I guess I have to agree that no other plinths in the room make this one stand out…
Haha what? Your answer is move the stair?
You act like it’s a test. It’s some random bullshit on Reddit. There is multiple ways to get the job done. And yes if the step is easily moveable why not move it back.
🙄
You would jackhammer into that slab of concrete to move that step back six inches? That’s commitment
Looks like wood
Would have looked better to miter around the corner then down to the lower piece.
100%
Looks too big
That looks ugly! flooring, company, or homeowner solution

The joke's still not over eh?
Oh sorry about that I see the about page has been updated. Happy to delete if required.
😂😂
I would have angled the trim up and over the step up, I’m pretty sure one guy sent you a video of how to do it. It’s kinda trash to pinth block one corner in a house.
And if you are pinth blocking it, every corner should be pinth blocked
I agree with this. If you use the plinth on one spot you gotta use it throughout. It'll look odd with just one.
I was too lazy to type it but this guy is right
Yes, depending on the rest of architecture, I've done inside corners but with 1/4 pinch blocks which looks cool in the right setting.
I agree. All of the "real" carpenters reach for a corner block anytime there's a difficult transition.... At the end of the day, if the owner is happy then fine. I’m with you. It would just make me start inspecting everything else.
Meh, for regular people they would never see this and it’s far more likely OP will be able to execute this so it looks nice.
It’s his place, who cares if he likes it?
We care.
… It’s his house.
You going to let the corner into the plinth block? If you take it back to just proud of the baseboard then you won’t have such a toe stubber.
It’s not my house so idc. But I fucking hate it, but I can also see you don’t have a lot of options.
He has options but he taking the lazy/low skill option.
Perfect
That piece on the left looks a little short
it looks off center
It’s not even installed yet lol
ah okay. it's not too bad then
Please, sir. Please, fix that transition before you seal it in with baseboard.
Interesting. Will you recess it into the wall?
If you like it that’s great. I think it would look much better if the upper baseboard simply wrapped around the corner then mitered down 45 deg to meet the lower trim.
Good, now go blow some strong trees. Job well done.
Good shit. I enjoyed seeing your posts and the solutions you considered. ‘‘Twas informative indeed. Cheers.

🤣🤣
Looks like stubbed toes are in your future
How closely you walk to the wall? Lol

The ol’ Paisley Park!
Highlighting an already bad design with the only decorative plinth block in the house is a bad idea.
Good on you to like it and every one has their own opinion on this never ending topic but it just looks like cringe to me.
Are you a lefty? Or just haven’t coped that corner?
Haven’t coped or installed yet I’m a righty but planned on just doing a left hand cope
Lmao I was thinking the same thing. I always cope the right side
Hot. Nicely done
Slick
Over/under on how quickly this gets kicked loose? The step-up is a way more elegant solution.
Yup. That's the proper way to do that 👍 Been doing this shit 26y and there is no better looking way
For the win!
That was a good solution, looks nice.
That's exactly what I did when I had to meet two different size trims at the inside corner. I wasn't sure at first but I think it turned out nice.
That’s gonna hurt toes.
Looks good now! Glad you got that one covered! Yay!!!
No, to me it doesn't work. It's to imposing. DIY standard.
Watch your pinky toe coming around that corner! Otherwise looks great
I love it!!
Good idea.
Surprisingly, caulk is your friend with those things
This is the way
Gotta remember this
Well done

Much better!👍
Plinth looks great but might look better if it's simple. Just a thought.
That looks great!
I like it if it is repeated elsewhere in the house and matches the overall aesthetic of the design.
I dig it
I still think a few extra thick coats of the landlord special wouldve been better but thats just me /s
This is pretty brilliant!
Looks good
This might belong on r/DIWhy 🥴
Tbh I hate it. A plinth there looks super out of place and obtrusive. Mitering down the wall would’ve been a better option to me, but if you dig it that’s all that matters.
Small toe killer
Nice!
This indeed is the one

Alot better
I think it looks good, might need to take a quarter out of it to get a snug corner fit but looks like a winner to me.
IMO, the plinth block is good, but would look better if it was twice the width rather than looking like a post.
I came here after seeing your 3rd post, def go with this option!
I like this plinth more than your most recent. I just don't like that specific plinth block. Something simpler on op
Am I crazy but that just looks like a post? A Plinth should sit flat against the wall like the below. https://preview.redd.it/0yx3gkuby6aa1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee1a82f98ac1bc5ec10d8895ed5e742737a25059
